Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:16, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

I think that you need to restore the file revision by Gsingh (talk · contribs). The file is attributed to "I, the copyright holder of this work" and now it looks as if you are "I, the copyright holder of this work". Also, if someone decides to move the file to Commons, most move to Commons tools would attribute the file to "Diannaa, the copyright holder of this work" which is obviously wrong. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:48, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Sternbuch train

Whereas I can't readily find a source calling the train by thus name, it us well documented (and cited) that the Sternbuchs negotiated for the passengers' release and paid a huge ransom to the Nazis. Because of this it is logical and true to fact to state that "perhaps the train should be called the Sternbuch train" - especially so since the Sternbuchs did this unselfishly, unlike Ksztner who put on the train hundreds of his family and friends - and because many consider Kasztner to have been a collaborator with the Nazis and responsible for large ;oss of life. If you agree please restore this phrase. Emesz (talk)

My opnion is irrelevant. You need to find a source, -- Diannaa (talk) 03:51, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dianna. Can you help me out with the WP:VG newsletter again? Our usual distributor isn't around right now. If you could send Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Newsletter/Issue to the list of users at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Newsletter#Readership, I would really appreciate it! Hmm, the bot did not start. Sometimes server lag is the problem. I will contact the bot operator in the morning if delivery has not started by then. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:56, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Sorry about that. As you probably heard, there was a security issue recently, which resulted in the bot's password being reset. The delivery is running now. --MZMcBride (talk) 04:11, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Request for closure

I was wondering if there was any reason why Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2013 August 24#File:BNL BigBang.jpg can't be closed. The discussion has been going on for 6 weeks now and the only participants have been George Ho and myself. The back and forth discussion between two editors really isn't going to achieve anything. --AussieLegend () 12:26, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

You might like to consider listing the discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:12, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Need Some Help

Hey Dianna, I need some help with an editor (User:Radiofox35) who is adding unsourced original research to the WCDX and WPZZ pages. I tried talking to the user on their talk page and got the standard "You would see the information I Provided about WCDX is accurate" and "why don't you do the research yourself" nonsense you get when someone doesn't want to follow the rules.

Since I'm still on 2RR, per Drmies, I can't revert WCDX anymore, but since the editor just isn't getting it, could you step in on both pages (and others on the user's contribs) and perhaps talk some sense into them. Thanks in advance...NeutralhomerTalk22:08, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Neutralhomer. I have removed the unsourced content and left a message on the user's talk page. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:17, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. :) I will keep an eye on the pages (I have them all on my watchlist) and if any other unsourced edits (or reverts) are added, I will let you know. Again, thanks for your help. :) - NeutralhomerTalk22:21, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
I think people who don't edit here daily may not realise how much our sourcing requirements have tightened up in the last few years. I will watch-list too for a while. Best, -- Diannaa (talk) 22:25, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
It got readded, by a different user, and with the same reference. While VARTV is a good temporary source, most of what you see on there is itself original research. So, it is not a good permanent source as there aren't any references and some of it comes from us. - NeutralhomerTalk00:19, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Actually, after this post, I'm highly considering breaking 2RR to revert as that could be considered unconstructive editing to make a POINT. I'm beginning to believe that User:ɱ is a sock of a blocked user. - NeutralhomerTalk00:24, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
I don't know anything about the quality of the source, so I left the edit in place. I have to log off now, but it looks like Drmies might be around so please have a word with him about your suspicions first. See you later, -- Diannaa (talk) 00:27, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Okie Dokie, I did revert the last edit as I believe it was done to make a POINT. I will forward this to Drmies though. Thanks again...NeutralhomerTalk00:28, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

New user issue

Hi, Diannaa,

I've been dealing with an article creation request by a fairly new user, Faisalhussain mohammed (talk). While I was doing that, I noticed that he seems to be having a lot of trouble with Wikipedia policies. For example, he's had a bunch of media deleted for license issues, several articles speedily deleted for copyright violation, and he's practically at war with admin Qwyrxian (talk) over reliably sourcing BLP's into various lists.

I think Qwyrxian may be frustrated enough to ban him.

It would be a shame if language and cultural barriers drove an eager new user away from WP. Can you think of a way to diffuse this? Perhaps someone who has an Indian Muslim background could help mentor him? I'm just not aware of resources that might help here.

(I contacted you because I saw that you were one of the admins who removed one of his media files, and from past experience, I know you are pretty level-headed and non-abrasive.)

Very best regards, Dovid (talk) 05:41, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dovid. The fellow doesn't need advice from another admin - what he needs is a mentor. All his edits are being deleted or need clean-up of some kind. Sorry but I don't have the time or interest to mentor this editor. Best, -- Diannaa (talk) 18:38, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. I wasn't actually looking for you to mentor. As I said, perhaps you know where to look for an appropriate mentor or other resource for him. That's what I was looking for. If you can't help, or point me elsewhere to look for help for him, I understand. Dovid (talk) 19:48, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
You could advise him to go to Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area. He can also get help at the Wikipedia:Teahouse or the Wikipedia:Help desk if he already knows what questions he needs answered. -- Diannaa (talk) 21:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! That helps. Dovid (talk) 04:46, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Closure of a discussion

Hi, I think that your closure of a free-use discussion relating to an Indian election symbol is causing issues at Talk:Aam_Aadmi_Party#Election_Symbol_.28Broom.29. Yours was a technical close but I wonder if you can comment in the article talk page thread. - Sitush (talk) 19:10, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Contra to your remark on the article talk page (that you've now copied to the NFCR discussion), the party logo in use in the article is actually a free one, not a non-free one. As a result both RouLong and now Sitush appear to be interpreting you as saying that as the broom would be the only non-free image (the other image being free), its use should be permissible.
I'm not sure that that was your position, but in any case the key discussion was about whether or not the broom symbol could/should be used additionally to the free logo under NFCC #8 and NFCC #3a, as giving qualitatively different information that was of value to the reader.
Since the question continues to be disputed, a reasoned close directly addressing this point would be useful. Jheald (talk) 19:45, 7 October 2013 (UTC); updated 20:22
Okay, understood. In that case I misunderstood and will remove the discussion from the archive. Sorry about the mistake. -- Diannaa (talk) 21:53, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Zimmermanh1997 is back...yet again

It is clear from this edit that User:Zimmermanh1997 is back. The IP being used traces back to Walkersville, Maryland, which is where all Zimmermanh1997 edits come from. I believe it might be time for a ban discussion. - NeutralhomerTalk21:54, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

I have checked my talk page archives and am not seeing any other IPs from this range so there's nothing to use to calculate a range block. I will block the individual IP for a couple weeks as it's dynamic so it could be reassigned at any time. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:02, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
OK, that works. If it helps, these are the IPs and accounts Zimmerman has used so far. Should I revert the edits made to the WQLL page? - NeutralhomerTalk22:14, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. The source (RadioInsight) does not back up the added content about "roadhouse oldies" and basketball broadcasts, so that part should come out if no source can be found. The station's own website indicates that their FM translator is now up and running, so that could stay in. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:22, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Okie Dokie, I will take that one part out here in a couple minutes. Thanks...NeutralhomerTalk23:09, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Why have you removed the photos of Port Moresby?

the source website states that the images are available "for research and educational purposes only. Researchers will be asked to sign a declaration to that effect." You claimed they had been released into the public domain by the author, and that the author is unknown, both of which can't be true. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:22, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

You changed the copyright tag to {{PD-Hubble}}. Did you notice that our local {{PD-Hubble}} differs to the one on Commons? The one on Commons states that material by ESA must have been created before 2009 whereas our template suggests that it also applies to more recent ESA images. According to Commons:Template:ESA-Hubble, more recent ESA images are licensed under CC-BY instead. The file seems to be free, but I don't know if the copyright tag is the correct one. The uploader appears to have specified the date of upload instead of the date of creation, and the source website is currently unavailable due to the United States federal government shutdown of 2013. I didn't notice this until I saw that you closed the discussion. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:07, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

The place where I viewed the copyright information was http://www.spacetelescope.org/copyright/, which does not mention any date restrictions. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:18, 8 October 2013 (UTC) It also shows a Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) so it looks like our template will have to be changed. This specific image is dated 15 July 2013. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:50, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Commons:Template:PD-Hubble contains a link to the Internet Archive which shows that ESA used to claim that the files were "copyright-free". I guess that the answer is that ESA changed the wording at some point without mentioning that it previously said that the material was "copyright-free". The dates on Commons appear to come from the assumption that ESA was unable to take any material back from the public domain and that the CC licence only can be enforced for new material. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:48, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Oxford University India Moot Court Competition Page

Oxford University India Moot Court Competition: The owner of the www.oxfordmoot.in website has created the above page. Please do not make any amendments which are factually, or otherwise, incorrect. You have wrongly deleted a lot of the text. Next time, please make a note on my user page before deleting anything. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oxfordindiamoot (talkcontribs) 20:26, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

I am the owner of the above PDF file in question. You seem to have deleted the same in the name of "copy right protection", while in reality, it is simply vandalism. I am part of the organizing committee of the competition itself and the email account used for creating this wikipedia page is an official email address on the www.oxfordmoot.in website.

I left a message to you earlier but I received no response from your side.

Please DO NOT vandalize the page titled Oxford University India Moot Court Competition. I will have to report you for the same if you continue to destroy the page in this reckless manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oxfordindiamoot (talkcontribs) 20:38, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

@Oxfordindiamoot: First of all, feel free to report Diannaa - it'll result in your being blocked for repeated insertion of copyrighted information without a proper release being submitted. Second of all, you'll also be blocked as your username is a violation of our username policy. Furthermore, you should not be trying to edit pages you're affiliated with, as you have a conflict of interest. Another thing, you should not accuse persons of vandalism when they are not vandalizing, that will also get you blocked.

Now, onto the real issue here. Wikipedia is not the place for you to own a page, nor is it the place for you to put your organization's website. You may not use your website as a Wikipedia article, at all, period. Again, you do not own the content of the page, and anyone is free to edit it in any way they see fit. Thus, you may not ask someone to "please make a note on [your] page before...", as they are under no obligation to do that. ~Charmlet -talk- 20:48, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

@Charmlet: Please note that there are laws outside of the website's own policy which govern the contents displayed on your website. Please do not threaten us in this manner and please note that we have followed all the applicable guidelines and regulations applicable in this regard. We reserve the legal rights to pursue this matter of vandalism and misrepresentation of our page in the appropriate legal forum, as and when necessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oxfordindiamoot (talkcontribs)
@Oxfordindiamoot: Now, you are also going to be blocked for making legal threats. Just out of curiosity, what law do you believe applies that allows you to do whatever you want on a private website? Some links you may find useful - WP:OWN, WP:Free speech, WP:Rights. ~Charmlet -talk- 21:02, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

T'was no problem at all - not the happiest that it ended with a block, but c'est la vie sometimes. ~Charmlet -talk- 00:23, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

File deletion: Trayvon Martin on the backseat of a car.png

Concerning your recent deletion of an image titled file:Trayvon Martin on the backseat of a car.png. Looking over the archived discussion, it says the above discussion is preserved as an archive of the debate. I see no discussion or debate that took place. Is it normal procedure to not notify talk pages of articles that were using this image, so involved editor's working on those articles can have a say in the discussion? The reason this particular image was being used is because it portrays Martin closer to the age when he was shot and killed. The other image of Martin in the hoodie, at a younger age, is the iconic image that was used during protests and marches. Is this a final decision based upon one single editor simply saying that two unfree photos of Martin are not needed? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer on this matter.-- Isaidnoway (talk) 05:10, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

What's supposed to happen is the person who nominates the image for deletion should place a template on the usages of the image so editors interested on the related articles are notified. The relevant template for WP:FFD is Template:FFDC. Sorry this step does not seem to have been done in this case. The reason why the image was deleted with out a discussion actually occurring is because the default for that nomination process is it defaults to delete.

Our non-free content policy requires a minimal use of non-free content. That means there should only be one non-free image of Trayvon Martin in the article. I don't know why the nominator chose to nominate this file rather than the image with the hoodie. I think the best way to proceed is to restore the image and to open a discussion at WP:NFCR as to which one should be kept, or if indeed the inclusion of two non-free images of Mr Martin are warranted. I've gone ahead and done that; Wikipedia:Non-free content review#Shooting of Trayvon Martin -- Diannaa (talk) 06:17, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Non-free use of File:Mayfair 11 12.JPG

The rationale on the image page already explains what it is for, i.e. it is an early (1976) issue illustrating the original Fisk Publishing era of the magazine from 1966-1990, after which it was sold to the current publishers. Nick Cooper (talk) 10:53, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nick. The non-free content policy requires us to not use multiple non-free images where one will do the job. This is laid out in WP:NFCC criterion 3a, which states that multiple non-free images should not be used when one would suffice. It also fails criterion 8, because the image does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would not be detrimental to that understanding. The second cover does not tell us anything we don't already know. For example, the masthead and layout are nearly identical. The image is not the subject of sourced commentary in the article, and it does not even have a caption. If you disagree, please post your reasons why on the talk page of the image, and the deleting another administrator will review your concerns and take them into account. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:06, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Sneaky Vandal

You said that the sneaky vandal could have been reported at WP:AIV. I did report the vandal to WP:AIV after a constructive IP editor went to the Help Desk. I don't know whether ZAD68 was reading WP:AIV or WP:ANI, but, since Zad68 didn't close the report at WP:ANI, my guess is that he or she was reading WP:AIV. The constructive IP requested that action be taken to prevent further vandalism. I requested the IP to register, because semi-protection makes no distinction between constructive IPs and anonymous vandals. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:53, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

I am the villain that uploaded "WhitePages Current Caller ID.png" without specifying a source. I did a quick search just now, but couldn't refind where I got the image from. Do you think we could restore it and I'll replace it right away with this one and add a source?

PS - I am a PR rep from WhitePages. CorporateM (Talk) 21:08, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi CM. I noticed your name on the file! The substitute image fails our non-free content criteria #1, because it's a non-free photograph, and a free image could be created. The old photo actually fails the NFCC for this reason as well. The way to do this is to take a photo yourself of a phone displaying the desired content (or get permission from the copyright holder via OTRS ticket to display their photo here). Please make sure that the image you upload doesn't include any non-free logos for other corporations (Facebook, Google, what have you) unless they are smudged beyond recognition. There's no reason why you couldn't re-use the old file name if you like. -- Diannaa (talk) 21:19, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Awww, ok, I thought it was ok to use because it was a screenshot of commercial software, which can only be copyrighted by the software developer and is allowed as non-free use. Anyways, I will download the app on my phone and maybe borrow my wife's phone to take a picture of my screen. CorporateM (Talk) 22:19, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
There's more than one copyright involved. There's a separate copyright for the photograph. The software may be copyright, the logo may be copyright, but there's no reason for us to use a photograph that is copyright. Hope this makes things clearer. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:22, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Deleting CSD templates.

Is it allowed, I think not. Sohambanerjee1998 07:48, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

CSD templates should not be removed by the person who created a page. They are sometimes validly removed by non-administrators, but the best practice is to leave them in place for administrator review. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:04, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes I know that but recently a user Mehrac-2079 removed it from his image. File:Firuddin Ali Babayev.jpg. Diff, the image should be deleted as it has already passed the 7 days limit. Sohambanerjee1998 13:48, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Smooth Gaussian-based DelPhi

Diannaa, You recently deleted the Smooth Gaussian-based DelPhi page citing copyright issues as the justification. The bot that had originally marked the page found my lab group's website and papers and thought I was duplicating our own work. I was only adding those equations and descriptions to explain how the software works and did so with authorization from the Principle Investigator in the lab. If there are some copyright tags that I should have added, please let me know, and I will do my best to prevent this situation from happening again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nwilddev (talkcontribs) 16:44, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, I saw that you deleted the images I uploaded in September 2013. They were tagged as OTRS pending and on 9/12/13 a Declaration of Consent was sent to permissions-en@wikimedia.org from an authorized representative of the owner giving permission to publish the images under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported" and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).]. As such, can these deletions be reversed? Thank you. Johnland11 (talk) 19:19, 23 October 2013 (UTC) Johnland11

Hi Johnland11. Normally files with an OTRS pending template are not deleted this quickly. The reason the images had to be deleted was because they didn't have a license tag attached. If and when the OTRS permission is received, the files can be restored, assuming the copyright holder advises us of which license they wish to release the files under. A list of compatible licenses can be found at Wikipedia:File copyright tags/All. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:21, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back to me Diannaa. Below is the email that was sent. Who can restore these files?

Like all administrative areas of Wikipedia, the OTRS team is experiencing backlogs, in their case of a month or more. I am not an OTRS team member and do not have access to the queue. Please be patient. -- Diannaa (talk) 20:07, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, I saw you deleted the Wrinkle Neck Mules photo. I have permission via email from their manager to use this photo, as he took it. How do I cite this and restore it to the page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jagiddens (talkcontribs) 03:28, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jagiddns. The copyright holder should sent an email giving permmision directly to the OTRS team. There's instructions at WP:Consent. --Diannaa (talk) 12:47, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, you recently removed a file I had uploaded. I have permission from the rights holder. If I supply this to you, could you restore the file? Or, do I have to re-upload it? Nebelmeister (talk) 18:27, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

What you need to do is ask the copyright holder to send an email to the OTRS team giving permission for us to display the images here and specifying under what license. A list of compatible licenses can be found at Wikipedia:File copyright tags/All. Instructions can be found at WP:Consent. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:41, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
I have received an email back from the American Meteorological Society saying that Wikipedia is permitted to use the image. Given the following:

Should I forward this email to OTRS or should I ask the original sender to resend it? Nebelmeister (talk) 15:48, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
I think it's best if they send it directly, but you could try forwarding it. I am not an OTRS team member so I can't say for sure -- Diannaa (talk) 15:51, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Quick question for ya, I saw your revert on User talk:INeverCry; would it be appropriate to add {{nobots}} to the talk page for future events like that? Regards, —  dainomite   02:00, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Do you have the script to make the lovely diff templates? importScript('User:Scottywong/diffconverter.js'); -- Diannaa (talk) 02:22, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
No I don't :3 ... O.o, what is that? What does it do? —  dainomite   02:24, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
It turns bare urls into ultra cool formatted templated diffs. For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:INeverCry&curid=28658635&diff=579003800&oldid=579002104 becomes Diff of User talk:INeverCry, so quick and easy. There's a documentation page at User:Scottywong/diffconverter. -- Diannaa (talk) 02:33, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Well, holllly toledo that is nifty. I'm signing up for it as we speak. And by that I mean adding it to my .js page.   dainomite   02:42, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Diff of User:Dainomite/vector.js omg is this amazing. Where have you been my editting career!? Jeez, I wish I'd known about this earlier. Thanks much, —  dainomite   02:46, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
You should poke around in my common.js and see what else you can use. I dunno what sorts of editing you do, but there's bound to be something useful -- Diannaa (talk) 02:49, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Eh, I just sort of poke around article space around things that interest me. I'm not the best content writer in the world but I'm working on that. I just nominated my first article for GA a few weeks ago, so we'll see how I do this first time around the GA table. I also tend to help people with optimizing/fixing userpages and signatures and I am a bit of a talk page stalker as well, helping where I can-when I can. Also, I snagged two more off your vector skin javascript page that I think will come in handy and that I will use often. —  dainomite   03:06, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

I have a few things in there that I don't actually use any more. I am just finishing up Schindler's List GA prep (it still needs a "themes" section, assuming any source material can be found), and then I am going to finish Adolf Eichmann. Good luck with the scripts -- Diannaa (talk) 03:15, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh nice! I wish I could be a content writing machine like you. The article I am nominating for GA is Bryan D. Brown. Probably the first article I've truely significantly expanded to GA nomination quality. Other than that I usually focus on trying to get things to B-class simply because I'm not familiar with the GA process. Heck, I don't even know how I'll know the GA for Bryan D. Brown will be accepted... is there something that informs me when the GA review has started? Thanks, —  dainomite   03:28, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, a bot will let you know when someone has started the review. I have done some GAs and I found it quite nerve-wracking at first, but the more I do the easier it gets. Now the hardest part is finding the time to read the books. Thanks for your kind words about my content work :) -- Diannaa (talk) 03:36, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Whew, well there goes my anxiety about missing the GA review and it being declined due to no one responding to the review. I concur with you regarding the free time to spend on books. I have a dozen books related to the Norman conquest of southern Italy but I just need to sit down and read them all and expand/cite that article properly. That's been on my to-do list for a long while but I haven't had the free time to devote to reading. >.< Also, no problem. I enjoy giving credit where credit is due imo. Thanks again, —  dainomite   03:41, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Banc de Binary screenshots

Hi, you deleted File:Banc De Binary Home Page Screenshot, Aug 2013.png and File:Banc De Binary One Touch Platform, Aug 11 2013.png because they'd been copied to Commons as commons:File:Plate-forme d'options à prix cible de Banc De Binary, 11 août 2013.png and commons:File:Copie d'écran de la page d'accueil de Banc De Binary, août 2013.png. They've since been deleted there for lack of permission. I seem to remember that permission had been given through OTRS for the files here. Would you please check, and restore them if appropriate? —rybec 05:02, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Film Fan

Hi Diannaa. I noticed that you blocked the above user after a long-standing spell of edit waring over film posters, etc. FF's last edit was at 22:52 on October 13. At 09:50 on October 14, an editor called Thebestfeet made their first edit, with an edit pattern very similar to that of Film Fan. These edits include page moves, editing film articles that FF used to edit (Blue is the Warmest Colour, for example) and uploading film posters. I'd like to assume good faith, but I find it hard to believe a brand-new editor would jump straight in with uploading files and page moves. I've never reported any editor for possible sock activity, what would you advise? Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 08:13, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

In order to better protect the rights of copyright holders, we can't take your word for it that you have permission. Miaowlee

Please delete all the users talk page files as they are missing evidence of permission for 7 days. Plus please give Sfan00 IMG a reminder as he is again wrongly tagging unfree files for copy-to-commons. Sohambanerjee1998 06:45, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) The "no permission" tags actually expire tomorrow (and some of them in a week), but the files can in my opinion be deleted immediately per WP:CSD#F9 instead. I tagged a couple of more files for speedy deletion as copyright violations (all of them tagged with {{Copy to Commons}} by User:Sfan00 IMG). Can you find File:MSI plant3.png somewhere? It smells like a copyright violation, but I can't find it using Google Images, Tineye or Baidu's image search. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:36, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
I couldn't find it either, though it is obviously a capture from the web somewhere. I have already spoken to Sfan00 IMG but will do so again as there's been no improvement. The images do qualify for F9 deletion and I will get busy on that right away. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:54, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Stefan2 that image, a building of a MSI factory in Taiwan or something like that was actually digitally morphed, it was with a set of images, thats why google could not find it. If one goes through Miaowlee, I will find it but there are close to 20-21 links it will be like finding a needle in a haystack! 866ƖǝǝɾɹǝuɐqɯɐɥoS 07:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

MSI images

Would it be reasonable to say good faith can't now be assumed? User_talk:Miaowlee#Images, and the rest of their talk page.

I've rather bluntly asked for an explanation (and for various reasons I don't think one is going to be forthcoming.).

I'd say it's time to issue a block for 'large scale' copyright violation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:54, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Please check images more thoroughly in the future; there's more on your talk page, -- Diannaa (talk) 16:03, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Fake article?

Please have a look at User:Mr.Hammes/sandbox, where a user appears to have copy-pasted The Jackson 5. The only obvious change is to the name in the infobox, which makes me think it might be the beginning of a parody or attack piece, rather than legitimate use of an existing article’s structure as a skeleton for a new one. (The account’s only other contributions comprise vandalization of The Rolling Stones.) If you’d rather I went to a noticeboard, please let me know which one is appropriate for this kind of concern.—Odysseus1479 02:29, 2 November 2013 (UTC) modified 02:35, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Cases like this can be tagged for speedy deletion under speedy deletion criterion A10. If it's an established user you might like to ask them first what's up, but in this case we can assume it's a test edit, judging by their other edits. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:48, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

All of the extended text was taken from ru:Недочеловек (the Russian article on Untermensch).

Is there a problem with it being on the English one and not the Russian one?--Cebula Adam (talk) 14:39, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

There's a problem with extensive quotations being copyright violations. Here on the English Wikipedia we take copyright concerns quite seriously. I don't edit on the Russia wiki, so I don't know what the standards are there. There's a problem with copying from the Russian Wikipedia without giving proper attribution, as well. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:45, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Okay I understand what you mean regarding copyright violations. How much of the actual text from there would I be able to copy over to the English Wikipedia article?--Cebula Adam (talk) 14:50, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Extensive quotes from copyright published works such as books and journals should not be included at all. Copying from other wikis is allowed, as long as proper attribution is given, because although the material is copyright it has been released under a CC-by-SA license. Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Translating from other language Wikimedia Projects for information on how to do it. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:57, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I removed some text that is not supported by the sources given, is this okay? Also on the Racial policy of Nazi Germany in the section of the Basis of Nazi policies and constitution of the Aryan Master Race well I have just finished reading the book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer and he mentions:

"We are a master race, which must remember that the lowliest German worker is racially and biologically a thousand times more valuable than the population here."

— Erich Koch, March 5th 1943

Would this be okay to add into this section as it certainly shows the reader that this sort of attitude was used and this is from a Nazi when in the occupied territory, will I be breaking any violations by adding this?--Cebula Adam (talk) 15:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Removing unsourced material is okay; in fact it's a good idea. Sorry for doing a blanket revert; an edit that big is really hard to follow. I suggest you make smaller edits so that people can follow along and better evaluate the changes. Re: Shirer: That's a pretty telling quote and is short enough to include. Please give information about which edition of the book you are using so the citation is verifiable (publisher, publication date, page number, ISBN if it has one). Shirer is great; I have a copy here (in fact I have a second copy, just in case I spill my coffee or some other tragedy befalls the first copy!). Some parts are out of date, but still great. You seem pretty familiar with editing here in some respects (templates, for example) - have you edited on other wikis, or here on en.wiki with a different user name? -- Diannaa (talk) 15:15, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Make sure you add sources for all content that you add; I have marked a spot where you need to add a citation. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:43, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

talkpage stalker swoops in to say... the book is both Great And Terrible; very hard to read, it hurts to read it. Worth it, despite that. Your anti-coffee backup seems wise; my copy was missing the first 20-30 pages, presumably due to a mishap with water (or maybe strong sunlight / cats / toddlers / vacuums). Turns out paperbacks have a surprising number of natural enemies.  :-/     74.192.84.101 (talk) 04:56, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
You think that hurts; try doing research for Einsatzgruppen. It's the stuff of nightmares, it is. I have two copies of Shirer in hardcover, one is 18th edition and the other is 21st edition. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:05, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
I think you probably are tougher than me, and I thank you for your courage. My greatest fear, in the next fifty years, is that we will forget, and be doomed to repeat. I have bad memories of T4, of the vans, and of the civilians-up-against-the-wall work... but the worst thing they did was staff the camps. And the *worst* thing is why; consider this section, which is straight out of nazipedia.

<redacted> I loved the book, it was a great read and is very similar to Alan Bullock's Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, old and a classic but some of the stuff is dated like you said. I've not used it before but my friend has an account and I've been there when she has edited and she told me for ages to make an account so I finally have done.

In regards to removing text and adding text:

If I remove unsourced text do I need to give that as my "Edit summary" and when adding text, how much text requires a citation?--Cebula Adam (talk) 16:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Everything requires a citation on this wiki. Since vandals also remove content, it's important to say why you are removing stuff. "Remove unsourced text" works fine when removing unsourced content. Another good option is to try to locate a source for the material, if you are pretty sure it's valid content that should be kept. I am going out for a while, ttyl -- Diannaa (talk) 16:18, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, so now everything[citation needed] requires a citation?  :-)     — 74.192.84.101 (talk) 22:28, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

I've added a link where you said needed cited. I removed a users text of "Nazi Reich distinguished Slavs and Jews from Aryan "race"" because this is not relevant in that section it is not needed to be in the Germanization part of the article and the source was very poor, is this okay to do?

P.S I am reading now all the tutorials on editing and especially on the foreign language one.--Cebula Adam (talk) 16:23, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

I am gonna put a "welcome" template on your talk page that has a bunch of helpful links to help you get started. You might like to check out the WP:Teahouse, where Wikipedians experienced at helping new users are available to answer questions -- Diannaa (talk) 18:37, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much Diannaa I am reading through them now and the Teahouse looks great too! I just changed the source on the William Shirer book on the Reichskommissariat Ukraine and Erich Koch page that I had previously put it on as that edition gave the wrong page and did not tell you the page, I have found another edition with the correct page on it, of course the same book. I added it on the Racial policy of Nazi Germany, does that look okay to you?

Also, may I ask as I can see you know a lot more than me when you want to remove text that is either vandalism or unsourced, what is the best thing to put in the Edit summary?

Thanks again, Diannaa.--Cebula Adam (talk) 19:08, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) If you’re uncertain of the motivation, it’s best to summarize in rather neutral terms, per WP:AGF: Removed (dubious / irrelevant / inappropriate) unsourced statement or something like that. Although “vandalism” is frequently bandied about here, IMO it’s a serious accusation not to be made lightly. Even from a cynical perspective, or where the addition seems clearly unconstructive, the principle of Hanlon’s razor may apply.—Odysseus1479 19:43, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Foreign races / Foreign nationalists

As you can see I've taken my time to create the new article Foreign races and it is based of the German page but slightly changed and will need expanding and the term though was not always as races but also nationalists such as Slavs or Balts. In the Anti-Slavic sentiment this should be mentioned but not as foreign "races" cause they weren't deemed a foreign race but foreign nationalists and according to the German page German Empire 1933-1945 it states:

A special and professional jurisdiction was henceforth besides the traditional court system for more and more built up areas. Only for "same type" was approximately equal right to be "alien" explained populations against special legislation was introduced as the "asocial" Jews and "foreign Nationalists", mainly Poles and Russians. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Reich_1933_bis_1945 - is it okay to put foreign nationalists as saying foreign races is misleading? Just search the term Fremdvölkische--Cebula Adam (talk) 19:41, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello Diannaa. I removed some of the content because I didn't believe it was relevant within the article or it lacked citation, I also changed the word 'Nazi' with the correct term National Socialist, although I didn't mind you changing that back for 'Nazi' is more commonly used. Albert Cole (talk) 23:55, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

The article recently was promoted to WP:Good Article status, and everything therein was deemed to be relevant. The closing paragraphs are there to give context and ideas about what to read next for people interested in pursuing the subject further. Also everything is sourced, to high quality books and journal articles. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:58, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

WhitePages Screenshot

Hi Diannaa. We talked about a similar image in the past and you mentioned that the screenshot of commercial software included photographs inside the image that needed to be donated under a free license. I was hoping you might be able to tell me if this is done right, once OTRS processes the permissions for the photographs in the image. CorporateM (Talk) 03:54, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

The Twitter birdie is a copyright image, under separate copyright from the photograph. The green logo up by the phone number might be copyright as well; I don't know. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:21, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Tagging licensed pics for deletion

Hi Dianaa. You left me messages about pics I uploaded[1]. They do come with proof of CC, as linked in the license. The photos come from a Dutch archive, I can't help it the proof is in Dutch ("Alle afbeeldingen met als bron het archief van Beeld en Geluid, zijn te gebruiken onder Creative Commonslicentie naamsvermelding-gelijkdelen"). As far as the Andy Palmer and Annie Anxiety pics are concerned, I uploaded them over five years ago, and at the time the upload form didn't ask me for an URL. I can't provide one now, since the message board where I contacted the photographers (and got the permission) no longer exists. There's no way I can contact the guys now, I wouldn't know where to find them. Asking for proof five years after the event, especially when I wasn't asked for it at the time, is a bit annoying. Regards, Yintan  05:41, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

. Even if you were able to provide links to the notice boards where you were given permission, those sites might not exist any more and may never have been archived by the Wayback Machine or other similar archiving services. It was precisely to address this problem that the OTRS ticket system was created in 2006. Getting the copyright holder to send an email to the OTRS team not only protects the copyright holder, it protects the file from deletion, because the proof of permission is kept on file indefinitely. Sorry. I also apologise for tagging the Redbone photos, I see now that I made a mistake. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:52, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
That's okay, we all make mistakes and at least you say sorry. Another editor tagged the Redbone files again after you, but he can't even be bothered to answer my message and now just slapped Copy to Commons on them. Anyway, about the other files. So now it has to be OTRS? Then why (still) ask for a link in the first place? And why wasn't I asked for an OTRS email at the time of upload in 2008? First the upload forms allow me to upload files according to its rules, no problems, and now, five years later, it's suddenly wrong. That doesn't make sense. I'm fed up with this. It's always 3 steps forward and 2 steps back on Wikipedia. I'm wasting my time and energy here, this place is a sink hole. Signing off, Yintan  17:15, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
The rules actually changed in 2006 with the introduction of the OTRS ticket. Whenever you upload someone else's work, an OTRS ticket is needed. Enforcement of copyright on Wikipedia has always been spotty. As you can imagine, there are hundreds, even thousands, of images uploaded every day, and sometimes things don't get noticed right away. I can certainly understand your frustration and again I apologise. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Hello, Diannaa. Emergency. Yintan has been with us since 2007, maybe longer. They have tens of *thousands* of edits, just during 2013. "Signing off" meant retiring forever,Diff of User talk:Yintan not ending that one talkpage message. I realize that you are just following the rules. But I've read the Dutch; most of the images, at least, are CC-BY-SA. Uploading required a legally-binding clickwrap agreement, enforceable here and in the Netherlands. Here is the rule which I suggest: pillar five, WP:IAR. There may be a slight chance to get Yintan back. Will you please help me? 74.192.84.101 (talk) 01:21, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi 74. The ones with the license in Dutch are the Redbone photos, File:Redbone1971.png and File:Redbone1971 b.png, which are no longer tagged for deletion. The two that he's pissed off about are File:Andypalmer.png and File:Annieanxiety 1986.jpg, which are sourced to photographers named Trunt and Graham Burnett, without any evidence of permission. There's also a discussion at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2013 October 30#File:Yintan sept 2011.png. That image has prior uploads elsewhere on the Internet, which means an OTRS ticket is required. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:36, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Clickwrap does not count as legally-binding non-repudiable permission? My grok of the Yintan_sept_2011.png discussion which you linked to is that Yintan is the owner of the photo in question, so clickwrap on their say-so should be binding; Stefan is definitely WP:ABF there, eh, or am I misunderstanding what is going on? As for andy-n-annie, the clickwrap is *still* binding on Yintan, correct? I'm under the distinct impression that you aren't deleting the images because you have a DMCA-takedown-notice in hand, signed by the Burnetts. You're just trying to retroactively enforce the 2006 rule, using WP:TEMPLAR when tempers were already high, with Stefan name-calling and Sfan00 (same person?) refusing to answer. You are being polite -- both with me and of course with Yintan -- and I do appreciate that, but are you sure losing Yintan is worth pre-emptively enforcing DMCA rules on photos that sound like they aren't even under United States jurisdiction in the first place? Do you not see any mitigating circumstances, loopholes, or other ways that we can take action, and you can save the day here? "If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it." Emphasis in original. Deleting images to cover our collective butts, against some hypothetical future lawsuit by the offspring of the Burnett dynasty, and losing a great editor due to that straw breaking the camel's back, does not seem like improving. Please. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 02:39, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
I have not commented in the discussion at PUF but only mentioned it as another reason why Yintan is frustrated. I regret that Yintan feels the deletion of these images is worth quitting over, but I'm not in a position where I can go back and pretend I didn't see them. We can't base copyright decisions as to what we think we can get away with, but have to go by what we are actually allowed to do under copyright law. I already apologised to Yintan more than once. Sorry, -- Diannaa (talk) 02:47, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I'm not blaming you here, or asking you to unsee; I like you, in fact, because you're not just brushing off the loss. So let me give this squaredance one last whirl, and then I'll let you alone.

WP:WALLOFTEXT contained herein

You are dead-on correct that Yintan was already angry at Stefan (who is in the wrong without a doubt as far as I can tell -- and then RUDE on top of that), and then the straw was Sfan00 double-twinkling the same files as you (and then *ignoring* the talkpage-message from Yintan). You're trying to help, just believe you cannot. I'm trying to make sure your specific belief-you-cannot is 100% justified, not just per WP:OTRS_ALWAYS_REQD but also *legally*. Furthermore, as you may have telepathically gathered (sorry stupid inside edit-war joke), I'm pretty familiar with copyright law... mostly for books and software rather than images but the principals are the same... and I *thought* I was pretty dern familiar with WP:COPYVIO stuff, as well. I've seen people try to delete images they uploaded under GFDL, and be denied on principal to avoid setting the poor precedent that the clickwrap is not 100% binding.

But you're telling me the clickwrap is nada, copyright anvils are hanging over our heads by a single thread, and without *immediate* OTRS from the Burnetts, the server-farms in Florida will be shut down via contempt-of-court-order within the hour. Well okay... to be fair, you're telling me ... what, exactly? What is it you think we are actually not allowed to do under copyright LAW? We *have* permission, per Yintan's statement. That means there is *not* actually any legal risk whatsoever of WMF server-subpoena-shutdown. What you are trying to get here, is *on-file-proof* that we have permission. Yintan is too frustrated to track down the URL and/or the Burnetts, but that doesn't mean we (I) cannot do it for them. Does it have to be done in the next five minutes? That is what you seem to be asserting here. I guess I feel like this is pointing out the obvious, but the photos were uploaded five years ago, and now all-of-the-sudden there is this terrible rush, AfD(PfD?), and WP:TEMPLAR.

I can agree that there's a slippery slope between "unseeing" the lack of OTRS officially on-file, and giving the community some time to once *again* contact the photographers that *already* gave permission five *years* ago, to re-verify the permission with the new paperwork-guidelines that WMF sees fit to impose (and *now* enforce). Throw in some more asterisks and allcaps and red squiggly underlines, if it will help. Is this deletion-spam five years overdue? Or is this a case of, send these non-paperwork-compliant-imagefiles to the back of the Twinkle-queue, and fix things by the end of the year, please & thanks. Methinks option#2 might save Yintan. I don't see it at all as something that "we think we can get away with"... because we are already 100% fully in compliance with USC Title 17 Copyright Statutes! OTRS is just double-extra-careful legal-insurance-paperwork... am I wrong here? Yintan got the necessary[2] permissions, long ago (or in the case of the Stefan-photo *embodies* the permission). We are good with the feds methinks; if not, why legally-specifically-not? 74.192.84.101 (talk) 04:15, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Umm, is TLDR my issue here? Or is there just nothing more to be said? I'm unhappy with the outcome, obviously, but I don't blame you for any of Yintan's frustrations, that was just bad luck which piled up at the wrong time. If you think there's just nothing that can be done, or that I just don't grok copyright as well as I think, and haven't time to explain to me, that's totally cool. WP:REQUIRED is my favorite policy after WP:IAR and WP:NICE. Thanks. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 22:24, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I was a little overwhelmed by the size of your posts, yeah. Your plan is unworkable, because I have no special authority to make these photos untouchable. There's no evidence of permission, and any editor could nominate them for deletion at any time. Best, -- Diannaa (talk) 23:45, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Mark David Chapman photos

Hi there, on 3rd March this year you did a spot of cleanup on this article and I'm just wondering if you know what happened to the images of Chapman as a boy and younger man, it seems they were deleted by someone but I don't know how to find out now on what basis, thought you might know or be able to find out? Sighola2 (talk) 22:37, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

The image I deleted was File:Markchapmanmugshot.jpg. This particular image was nominated for deletion under speedy deletion criterion F7, with the nominator specifying that the pic failed WP:NFCC #1 and #8. At this point there were two images in the Chapman article, so I moved the one with Chapman and Lennon into the info box at the time I did the deletion. Our non-free content criteria call for minimal use of non-free content, so articles of this type typically only have one non-free image, unless there's an excellent reason to include additional ones. The images of Chapman as a boy and younger man were likely deleted for similar reasons to the mug shot – lack of context (criterion #8), use of multiple images when one would do (criterion #3a), and using non-free images to illustrate something that could be described using prose alone (criterion #1). – Diannaa (talk) 23:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the reply. I feel that images of the younger Chapman, before he committed any crime and when he was high functioning in work etc, are vital context for the article and the understanding of the crime and related psychopathology. There is also reader feedback, when that was enabled, requesting more pictures. At the moment there isn't in fact one clear picture of Chapman. I know that some Lennon fans are against him having any focus, partly due to the claims that he did it for fame, so that may have had something to do with them disappearing - how do I trace back, is there any way now? Sighola2 (talk) 00:29, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
The only way I can think of to find the deleted images at this point is to go back through the revisions of the article and look for the file names. There are over 4,000 revisions to the article so I will not be assisting in this effort, as my opinion, informed by our non-free content policy, is that the article should only contain one image. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:34, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks but as I understand it's not when they were deleted from the article, but when they were deleted from wikipedia files/wikimedia commons I assume, do you know how to trace that? As I say the article does not contain a whole image of Chapman at this point. Sighola2 (talk) 00:44, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
It's impossible to tell you when or why the images were deleted from Wikipedia without knowing what the file names were. The only way I can think of to obtain the file names is to hunt for them in the article revisions. If you think the Chapman article should have a different image from the one that's presently there, I suggest you start a discussion on the talk page of the article and get consensus from other interested editors as to which image should be used. Once consensus has been reached, a new image could be uploaded from elsewhere on the internet. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:51, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks the file names are in the revision I linked to in my first comment above - Image:Mark-David-Chapman-as-boy.jpg Chapman as a teenager and Image:Mark David Chapman in 1975.jpeg Chapman in 1975. I take your point about getting consensus. Sighola2 (talk) 00:55, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh okay, I see them now. Sorry for the confusion. Both of them were deleted for F7: Does not pass NFCC #8: no contextual significance. Here's what the images looked like:

Thank you for the info and your time on this; as a final request can you tell which editor deleted them? Regards Sighola2 (talk) 10:01, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

It was me. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:07, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi.

Hello Dianna, I would just like to tell you something. The user Taylor Trescott has nominated the Roads to Vegas and Road to the North Pole image titles that were used in their proper articles. It simply described that the images didn't pass WP:NFCC#8, and I told the user, as a response to keeping the images, that it has to pass it because it shows the title of the episodes. The user replied back saying that there was nothing on the articles that described the images, and it was just a decoration. I replied to the user stating that I would take care of that problem, but I can't do that now until the requests are closed. I would just like to ask you what do you have to say about this. Blurred Lines 04:37, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Blurred Lines. Sorry, but I made the decision a while ago not no get involved in the issue of images in the info boxes of TV shows. I am not going to delete them, and I am not going to try to save them. What you need to do to rescue these specific images is to add some sourced commentary to the articles about the images themselves. There's no reason why you could not do that right now, even though the files are listed at FFD. -- Diannaa (talk) 16:05, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

I don't know what happened to the first article photo. Can you please look into the matter, when you have the time. Cheers, Kierzek (talk) 13:31, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

The photo has been missing for a long time! It was commons:File:Hitler Röhm.jpg, which was deleted from the commons in October 2009. You might consider adding File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1982-159-21A, Nürnberg, Reichsparteitag, Hitler und Röhm.jpg, which matches the caption, as it shows Hitler and Röhm in 1933. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:55, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I added it; see what you think. I don't know why the info box has to be that size; seems bigger than needed, squeezing the text. Kierzek (talk) 16:10, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
The info box width is determined by the info box template being used (infobox government agency). I think it looks okay. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:32, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
I checked it again after I got home, against my bigger flat screen there and it is okay. Kierzek (talk) 14:24, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

If this image has not been deleted at Wikipedia when you receive this message, perhaps you could kindly delete it? I have moved it to Commons and added a link to the Wikipedia deletion request on the new image's talkpage at Wikicommons. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:45, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

 Done -- Diannaa (talk) 15:11, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
Please also move the old versions of the file before deletion. The instructions at WP:CSD#F8 tell that you should do this: "All image revisions that meet the first condition have been transferred to Commons as revisions of the Commons copy and properly marked as such." The easiest way to copy old revisions over is to use tools:~magog/oldver.php. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:10, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
I tried that tool, but I got an error message: TUSC verification failed. I have undeleted the image so you can give it a try yourself. Thanks, -- Diannaa (talk) 18:06, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't know why TUSC failed, but it usually works when I try to move old versions myself. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:38, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
I have done some fiddling around at http://tools.wmflabs.org/tusc/index.html, and hopefully it will work next time. -- Diannaa (talk) 04:20, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

OTRS pending and no licence

I noticed that you deleted File:CarolSudhalter.jpg as F4, mentioning that {{OTRS pending}} was present. Is this really the correct thing to do? An OTRS e-mail may contain a source and licence, so lack of either of those might be repaired when an OTRS volunteer processes the e-mail. When a licence is present, I have noticed that it often is changed into a different licence by the OTRS volunteer who processes the e-mail, and I don't think that a file information page without a copyright tag is very different to one with a wrong copyright tag. I realise that OTRS probably will undelete this file, should a permission statement be sufficient, so it is probably not necessary to undelete it for now. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I understand your point, but I am not comfortable with having such images sit here for (potentially) several months with no license. That puts us in a bad position legally. Such images qualify for F4 speedy deletion. The file can be restored if and when a permission email is received. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:23, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
I realise that there could be problems, but I don't see why it would be worse to keep an F11 case for some time than to keep an F4 case. The safest solution would be to delete everything on sight and restore only after an OTRS permission is available, but this would cause too many complaints, in particular when OTRS is backlogged. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:39, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
The OTRS team should be promptly deleting files for which no permission has been received in a timely fashion. That's what is supposed to be happening, but it's not, due to a shortage of OTRS volunteers and a shortage of admins, particularly admins working with images. Leaving on display images with no license tags would not help the problem but only make things worse. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:46, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm well aware that old {{OTRS pending}} files aren't deleted properly, and this is precisely why I took a lot of them, such as the ones which were pending OTRS permission since last year, to PUF. Maybe we should have a bot which takes them there if OTRS doesn't touch the files for some time... --Stefan2 (talk) 00:00, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Dianna, go ahead and ask penny yourself. She said it was cool if anybody uses that picture for any use. Crackerjack (talk) 04:01, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Also, you tagged "copied from facebook", that's not actually true. I uploaded the original before facebook existed. Crackerjack (talk) 04:04, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crackerjack. Please don't remove speedy deletion tags from your own uploads. An administrator needs to make the decision what to do, not the uploader. If someone other than the uploader took the picture, an OTRS ticket is required. There's instructions at WP:consent. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:09, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Came across and old block

Hey Diannaa,

In my duties as a CheckUser, I came across an expired block of yours, 70.98.127.122. Was there a original user account that you had blocked first or just the IP? If there is an account, and it's not an obvious connection, can you drop me a an email with the name please? Thanks, -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 16:10, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

The block was the result of a post at AIV. There was no named account associated with the block. Looking at the talk page, it appears that the length of the block was chosen for the long-term activity of adding certain links to articles without adding any value to the encyclopedia. Hope this helps. -- Diannaa (talk) 20:09, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Undeletion of the seal of the University of California?

Hi Diannaa,
I was wondering if you could un-delete the seal of the University of California at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_California_Seal.svg which was classified as fair-use. This file was previously used under fair-use for the article University of California, Berkeley. You recently deleted this file because at that time it was an unused non-free media file.
Somebody else uploaded exactly the same seal to commons and currently the commons-file is used in the article University of California, Berkeley. However the person who uploaded it to commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_California_Berkeley_seal.svg incorrectly uploaded it with a wrong license, so the file at commons will soon be deleted since commons cannot accept fair-use images.
If this seal should stay in the Wikipedia-article, we will again need the local fair-use copy.
Therefore I am wondering if you could restore this file, and maybe add it to the infobox at the University of California, Berkeley article.
Thank you for your help. --Casecrer (talk) 02:11, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Fair use photos for articles

Diannaa: any chance we might be able to get some "fair use" photos for these bio articles of Bunker personnel? I am not well versed in this area. I know you are busy, however, if you have any time and come across any, it would be helpful for these articles. Cheers, Kierzek (talk) 19:47, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Sikhism

Hi Fellow editor, I was wondering whether you could help me keep any eye on this article. One editor in particular who seems to lack a command of English and WP:COMPETENCE keeps making it a sound unencyclopaedic. I'm getting a bit tired of correcting his stuff. ThanksSH 19:51, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sikh-history. I suggest you try to engage him on the talk page; there's been no talk page edits since September. Communicating solely via edit summary is problematic. I will watch-list -- Diannaa (talk) 23:23, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
I will try but he's got a bit of a beef with me, I think. ThanksSH 10:36, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Dianna, I've tried to engage him, he doesn't seem to get it. I don't think English is his first language. He keeps adding "google search references" which have no bearing to the source material, and uses long tortuous sentences. Then when I try and WP:Balance Sikh fanatical stuff, he makes accusations. Please can you help here. Thanks SH 21:26, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
...and now he is trying to WP:Censor Nihang. :( SH 21:50, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
You seem to be doing quite well on your own. Please continue to give him good reasons on the article talk page as to why the edits don't work. Google books can only take a person so far; what I do to improve an article is to bring books in on intra-library loan. I bring articles up to Good Article status using reliable books by scholars and historians. I can see at least six books on the general topic of Sikhism at amazon.ca, so there's definitely source material out there. Then once the article has been promoted to GA and assessed for completeness and reliability of sources, it becomes stable and easier to maintain. This works on articles on the volatile topic of Nazi Germany so it might work in your field of study too. You might consider dispute resolution venues – one thing I have found that works really well is to file a WP:Request for comment, as these are widely advertised and new editors will be drawn to the talk page to give opinions regarding content questions. For example we have one underway right now at Talk:Death of Adolf Hitler -- Diannaa (talk) 23:51, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Many thanks Dianna, and having a marathon Lord of the Rings session last night has done me the world of good . :) SH 09:27, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

File:Mahamandaleshwar Swami Shankarananda in Ganeshpuri.jpg

Hello. I have arranged for the party that owns copyright to forward the appropriate email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org confirming the appropriate open rights are granted to wikipedia to use the file. Please undelete the file and arrange for the subsequent edits made by bots to remove links to be reverted. Thankyou Yogidude (talk) 23:43, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello. The file will be restored once a member of the OTRS team checks the email and makes sure the proper permissions are in place. Please be patient – this can take several weeks, as they are experiencing backlogs. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:58, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dianna, there is email confirming permission to use the file see VRTS ticket # Ticket Number parameter missing.. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 05:26, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Callanecc. I have restored the file. If you could please add the OTRS ticket and check the license? I am not an OTRS member so I am unable to view the ticket. Thanks, -- Diannaa (talk) 14:11, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. Could you please restore this one too (VRTS ticket # Ticket Number parameter missing.). Regards, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 04:01, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Done - It needs a fix to the license please, -- Diannaa (talk) 14:50, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

I see from my watchlist that you have deleted a page I have contributed to because you didn't like something on it. This seems to be an odd way of dealing with a problem. Please could you arrange to have this article restored minus the offending extract. Graemp (talk) 16:59, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

The entire article was copied verbatim from a blog, http://peasant-arts.blogspot.ca/2010_11_01_archive.html. The article had been tagged as OTRS pending since 2010 and somehow did not get deleted in a timely fashion. A new article will have to be created from scratch, so sorry, as there's nothing that can be salvaged. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:04, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Entire article copied verbatim from one source is hard to believe. I am happy to re-create the article. It would be of help if you could restore the inoffensive bits such as categories and other standard boxes. Graemp (talk) 17:28, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I have restored what I could. All remaining prose was copied verbatim from the blog. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:41, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I have to apologize for losing track of this article. I was the one who declined the original CP report, because the author had placed a button at the bottom of her blog template indicating a free license, and also claimed to have submitted an OTRS ticket. I see that she has since removed the button, and the ticket never came through. --Laser brain (talk) 17:53, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Laser Brain. I know the button must have been there at one point, but it's gone. We would really need that OTRS ticket to display the content here. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:59, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Diannaa. I know there is more of my [and others] edits that you could also restore but I don't want to put you to any more trouble. I would have thought that it was standard procedure to check an article's history before deciding to delete the whole thing. Graemp (talk) 18:19, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Please be assured that I did check carefully before deleting the article, checking the logs and editing history and comparing the prose against the source blog both manually and using the duplication detector tool. I hunted on the source blog for any evidence that the material had been released under a free license, and failed to find it. Your three edits to the article consisted of removal the word "landslide"; addition of the the election boxes; and fixing a broken internal link. Sorry for any inconvenience. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:32, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
So when you said "The entire article was copied verbatim from a blog" you were just trying to fob me off? I'll accept the apology and move onGraemp (talk) 19:44, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
  • There is now no attribution of the people who wrote the text in the article. I think that the copyvio will have to be revision deleted instead of deleted in some other way so that the user names appear in the history for attribution purposes. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:39, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
    • Hi Stefan. The copyright violation was foundational; there's no clean revision to revert to, so the article had to be deleted. The wee paragraph at the top was brought in with the very first edit (though it was not copied from the blog). Revision deletion won't work -- Diannaa (talk) 23:16, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for processing the backlog at WP:PUF

Diannaa, thanks for taking the time to process the backlog at PUF. It was really beginning to get out of hand. If it helps, I've gone through all of the file listings that are still outstanding from August and September (which were not many) and added a delete/keep rationale in order to aid in the closing of these really old nominations. —RP88 (talk) 18:10, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for that. Note I am unable to close my own nominations or discussions in which I participated, so more admin help is still needed. I have to go to get new tires installed in an hour and will get some more done later. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:15, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Image deletion

See here: [4]. Lesion (talk) 19:00, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Lesion. I do hot have OTRS access, so cannot help with this matter. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:22, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
And yet you felt it acceptable to delete the images? Lesion (talk) 00:01, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't understand the question. The image that I deleted (File:Melanocyte with melanin in dendrite to the left.jpg) was not tagged as OTRS pending at the time I deleted it, so OTRS permission was not required to perform the deletion. Am I missing something here? -- Diannaa (talk) 00:06, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Several professional quality images have been deleted, which were added to a rare medical article which previously had no images, uploaded by a new user who had also received a generally unpleasant welcome from wikipedia (see the user's talk page). The section I link to suggests that this user is the copyright owner and is in the process of a ticket for the images. Deletion occurs anyway. Overall result = driving away a new user with skills we need who suddenly realizes s/he has better things to do than jump through arbitrary hoops before arbitrary deadlines. Lesion (talk) 00:18, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Doc James should have advised the user to add the {{OTRS pending}} template to the images; this would have prevented deletion. Instructions as to how to do this were also provided by Stefan2 when he nominated the image for deletion on 7 November. The two deleted images will be restored once the permission email is received and processed. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:28, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I am struggling to understand how you can blame someone else for this deletion ... you expect a complete newbie to understand how to place templates? I think you should look more closely into things you are deleting instead of blindly following an arbitrary set of rules, it drives away contributors because it makes an unpleasant environment. Lesion (talk) 00:35, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I am not trying to blame someone else for the deletion, though I can see how you might have thought that, so sorry. I don't think it's realistic to expect the deleting admin to check the talk page of the uploader for comments, nor is it required by the deletion instructions. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:44, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

I have left a note for the user on their talk page attempting to explain things [5]. I do not fully understand the copyright requirements since I have not uploaded many images, so if my explanation is wrong I would appreciate any correction or clarification. Lesion (talk) 00:53, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

I just think that due to the way this new user has been greeted by Wikipedia (understand that James only became involved after I posted on another talk page about the incident), and how the article now has zero images again, and possibly one less contributor ... something is not right here. Lesion (talk) 00:58, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
That's a good message. One thing that could have been done better is instead of laying half-a-dozen templates on the user talk, User:Stefan2 could have put one template and then listed the additional files underneath, like this for example. It's important to use one template in my opinion, so as to give all the legal info, but a personal note rather than five or six templates is way friendlier and less overwhelming to the new user. This template-barrage that new editors often receive is a known problem. Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention and others are trying to work on that. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:05, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I think that it would be very convenient if Wikipedia got some simple mass nomination tool similar to Commons:MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js. That tool bundles everything automatically and also handles files by multiple different uploaders. --Stefan2 (talk) 02:17, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I will check out that script, thanks for the tip -- Diannaa (talk) 02:20, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Why was this image deleted (now a new image has been uploaded of the same name about something different): [6] Yet the partner image was not? It seems that this is totally arbitrary and half automated.

User Stefan2 's comment above should be taken in the context of the fact that s/he has expressed no concern or regret for their actions in this case, even when several other editors were asking if this behavior was appropriate. Lesion (talk) 12:31, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

File:Hscbefore.jpg was deleted in 2008. Perhaps you posted the wrong diff? -- Diannaa (talk) 14:48, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
I realize this is historical yes but I seek to understand why it was deleted and its partner was not please. I cannot find any deletion log or discussion page about this, possibly because someone has since uploaded another image of this name. Lesion (talk) 10:31, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
File:Hscbefore.jpg was deleted because the person who uploaded it did not add a license template. The image was tagged by a bot as unlicensed and was deleted a week later. File:Hscafter.jpg was not deleted because the uploader placed a license template on the file at the time they uploaded the image. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:34, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Maybe Diannaa if you could undelete the images and add the OTRS pending template that would be useful. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your page reply on mine) 08:57, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Doc James. The image I deleted, File:Melanocyte with melanin in dendrite to the left.jpg, has now been restored under OTRS ticket #2013110810016371, and now available on the Commons. I asked the OTRS team member why the other four images were not restored, and he said the ticket only grants permission for the one image. See commons:User talk:Natuur12#OTRS ticket #2013110810016371. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:34, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes so what about restoring the images and giving this user some time? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your page reply on mine) 04:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
The permission email has been received and these four files were not included. They came from a different source. Please have the uploader contact the copyright holder and get permission for the files to be displayed here. This is a legal requirement, Thanks. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:27, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Which file has been restored and which have yet to be? Although the user in question has not made any appearance again (understandable), I would like to give them clear instructions about how to restore the other images too, 1. in case they return to wikipedia and 2. in case they can be bothered with this bs.
Please not that no image has been restored to the article. Lesion (talk) 15:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
The four images that have not been restored are:
The reason an OTRS ticket is required is because they were previously published in "Plasma-cell gingivitis in children and adults. A clinical and histological description". Malmö, Sweden: Department of Oral Pathology, Lund University. PMID 7825113. {{cite journal}}: Cite journal requires |journal= (help); Unknown parameter |authors= ignored (help) I have already visited the user's talk page and provided instructions but please feel free to expand on it. Just to be clear, I can't restore the files at this point, because the user has not confirmed that a permission email is on the way for this group of images. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:51, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Have restored the images in question. You will note that the author on the one that OTRS permission is exactly the same as the ones for which it is still pending. Trouting the users in question. Hi Dainnaa. If you check the date of that post about Al Kamil, and the date of the creation of the wikipedia article about Kamil you will see that, in fact, it that site that copied wikipedia, not the other way around. Dbrodbeck (talk) 14:52, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Image deletion

I couldn't find the old thread.

I have restored the article to the version with the images which are now available again [7].

Regarding the other deleted image from hydraulic sinus condensing, removed as you say in 2008 [8], please note that the images were likely a pair. I have not seen the deleted image, but since it is called hscbefore.jpg and the undeleted image was called hscafter.jpg can we please just apply a little common sense and say 1. the same user uploaded these 2 images at the same time, 2. they are likely x-rays of the same patient and 3. the details that were applied to hscafter.jpg likely also apply to hscbefore.jpg. I do not believe this is a true case of missing info, the user probably was just cutting corners and did not count on the blind adherence to arbitrary rules in Wikipedia and commons.

I did not realize deleted images were not lost forever. This is good, but I think it will take some effort to get many of these questionable deletions reversed, but I believe it is possible if more people knew about them and were willing to comment. Lesion (talk) 00:00, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

You will have to get someone else to help you with this, as I am finished working with images for the time being. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:07, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Have restored the image in question. It was clearly marked as being in the public domain. Feel free to ping me Lesion if you find more issues. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your page reply on mine) 00:08, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Merry everything

Hi

Long time no speak :¬)

I am so jealous of your GOCE Hall of Fame badge! Congratulations!

I am sort of back on a bit-more-than-not-at-all basis since my RL issues took over the last year and a bit, so thought I would drop you a Happy Thanksgiving/Christmas/How R U doing message as I don't bump into you much nowadays. Hope all is well with you, and best wishes for any holidays you might be celebrating!

I am English, I believe you are Canadian, so I guess we shouldn't be celebrating thanksgiving technically, but I celebrate just that point, I am not a USAer, while my brother and his wife became citizens two years ago to match their children (and it's a great excuse to have a fireworks party lol).

Was a little surprised to see Stfg got Emeritus though ... ah well. I looked at the GOCE requests page today and somehow got sucked back into doing a couple as they look a bit behind. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:13, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Chaosdruid! We do indeed celebrate thanksgiving; we just do it in October, so as to be done before the snow flies! Snow! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! -- Nice to know you have more time for editing again, welcome -- Diannaa (talk) 23:30, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Pinging User:Moonriddengirl on this as well. As this is a GA, should it have its GA status removed (especially considering the status of the nominator)? I'd do it myself, but since I was a party in the arb case, I would feel uncomfortable doing it myself. --Rschen7754 23:01, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Moonriddengirl checked most of the user's diffs on this article herself and found nothing. In the diffs I checked, I found some material copied verbatim from the 2010 annual report and removed the material. From a copyright point of view the article is now clean. There's other obvious GA issues, though; in particular there's a lot of dead links that need archive links added, and the material is for the most part three years out of date. But copyright-wise it's now clean. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:38, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Although you unprotected it, and then someone currently inactive re-protected it, I think I'd like to contact you first. Can you lower protection setting to "pending changes"? I see failed attempts to add uncited information, and I'm unconvinced that it's on grounds of vandalism. --George Ho (talk) 03:51, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, can you please take a look at this file and see what's the problem with it. There's really no point in describing the problem here, because you'll know what it is when you see. Thanks.  InfamousPrince  19:09, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Both of your uploads show dimensions of 0 x 0. I can't say for sure what went wrong there! I suggest you revert to the big version and let the bot do the reduction by tagging it {{non-free reduce}}. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:22, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Very weird error. It displays correctly at full resolution but not when MediaWiki tries to display it on a page. Exiftool reports that the file is configured to display at a size of 150x150 inches (which is way too big). Is this what confuses MediaWiki? The big file also has this setting, and it doesn't display in the history section either. The file File:Paranormal Activity - The Marked Ones 2014 poster.jpg, which you recently uploaded, doesn't have a size in inches in the metadata. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:58, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
I "repaired" the big one by removing all of the metadata. The metadata isn't very useful for a poster image anyway. As this file is too big, I have tagged the file for reduction, which we can leave to the bot to handle. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:05, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I really had no idea what was the problem there, something like that never happened to me before. Anyway, thanks again. Cheers.  InfamousPrince  21:40, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Genocide and its denial

This recent scholarship comes highly recommended:

Diannaa Reformed Episcopal Seminary has given permission of its seal via the Creative Commons license with attribution. The Seminary uploaded it to the Commons site and I reloaded it here. There is permission for free use with attribution from the Seminary. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do or if the Seminary should do. Thank you for your help in this matter. I want to get this done right. JohnKeble (talk) 23:18, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

What you have to do is get an OTRS ticket in place. What this means is that the copyright holder of the image needs to send an email to the OTRS team giving permission, and releasing the image under license. There's instructions at WP:Consent. Once this has been done, please add a template {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:26, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Update: Based on the input of another editor, research of other Reformed Episcopal logos and further conversation with Seminary officials. This has been changed to non-free fair use. They want it on Wikipedia to clarify that the article is about Reformed Episcopal Seminary; however this protect their rights better. Thank you for your input. JohnKeble (talk) 04:51, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

All right. I have changed the templating and tagged the image for size reduction, which will be done by a bot in the next day or two. Regards, -- Diannaa (talk) 04:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Copy-editing, again :)

Hi, Diannaa! Some time ago, your copy-editing of the article Jovan Vladimir was fundamental to its promotion to FA status. This time, I would very much appreciate if you were willing to copy-edit the article on Mladen Stojanović, a prominent Yugoslav Partisan of WWII. I intend to nominate it for GA status. So far, we don't have any GAs or FAs on Yugoslav Partisans. Thanks, Vladimir (talk) 20:20, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vladimir! I have thought about it and have decided to say no this time, as I have already got a lot of work planned. Good luck in your quest for GA and FA status for the article. Best, -- Diannaa (talk) 02:07, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Tomb of Asif Khan

I just wikified Tomb of Asif Khan last night and now another template again. This "Architecture" section can't have more wikilinks, can you check it for me please? Tell me if I'm missing something. -- Assassin! No, Captain Assassin! ( T - C - G ) 04:03, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Captain Assassin! Welcome back. I do see some additional terms that could be linked in the Architecture section, such as octagon, stucco, alcove, stone inlay, tracery, relief, cenotaph, and Koran. Cheers, -- Diannaa (talk) 04:19, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
I thought these are simple understanding words, but I got it. Thanks. -- Assassin! No, Captain Assassin! ( T - C - G ) 06:42, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Deleted files

Hi Diannaa, is there a way to view deleted files (rather than just the file description page)? Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 12:58, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Callanecc! Click on "View or restore deleted edits"; you will see two sections - "Page history" and "File history". Under "File history", click on the date of the revision you wish to view, and you are able to view the deleted image. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:56, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Samudrakula. The version you uploaded was 300 x 180 pixels, and the current version is 177 x 197 pixels, the difference being the removal of empty white space on both the left and the right. Since we are only allowed to have one copy of a non-free file, the old revision was deleted. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:03, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

An Unsettling Personal Attack

Hi fellow editor, I guess some people are showing their true colours. Take a look and this WP:Personal attack here. It is very unsettling. I get Sikh extremists doing this from time to time. They will pose as loegitimate editors, but they will try and change articles to fundementalist propaganda, however wikipedia rules normally frustrate them eventually leading to attacks like this. :) Thanks SH 12:13, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi S-H. I have left a note on his user talk page. Please visit the talk page at Talk:Sikhism and give the editor a more detailed explanation of why you found his recent additions to be unencyclopedic. Thanks. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:35, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
I have done, but he is still not engaging. He has a "hit and run" pattern. See the title where I added "Rememberance" and he changed to "Rememberance of God". We've had this discussion as the concept of "Naam" or the "Divine Word" is far wider than just mere rememberance of God. He either doesn't get it or doesn't want to. As stated before, serious WP:Competence issues. Thanks SH 10:42, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
It's not bad enough to warrant a block, so you will have to continue to try to work with him. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:55, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

NFCR close: please could you review?

Hi Dianna. Would it be possible for you to review this non-admin closure of a contested section at WP:NFCR, please? The full discussion with its close is archived at Wikipedia:Non-free content review/Archive 40#File:McCann right eye.jpg. There is also a discussion on the closer's talk page, where he gives extended reasoning for his close. Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 13:30, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa. Since Stfg contested my close, I asked him to seek out the opinion of an uninvolved administrator. As you are both uninvolved and an administrator, if you have the time, please consider looking into this close. If I have closed this improperly, please let me know, and I will reverse it. Thanks, -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 14:50, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

GA reviewing

Hello. I'm a new reviewer of GA articles. I went through the recruitment program and my mentor was Khazar2. I graduated just a couple of weeks ago, but I was still turning to Mr. Khazar2 for advice. Now he's gone -- and I certainly wish him well. But I still have questions! I wonder if you would mind if I occasionally bounced a question or two to you, considering your role as an administrator and your friendship with Khazar. I would promise not to bug you too often. If it's too much trouble, don't hesitate to say so. Thanks for your consideration. --Jburlinson (talk) 03:34, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jburlinson. I would be happy to answer any questions about GA reviews or any other topic. If I don't know the answers I will try to find out for you. Cheers, -- Diannaa (talk) 15:46, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
OK. Thanks. I'm working on a review of the article for John B. Cobb, an American theologian. It's been in the queue for over 3 months now. It's a decent article, but my concern is that the majority of the references are to primary sources written by Cobb himself. In looking at other WP articles for philosophers, it seems that this is not necessarily unusual, but it seems to me to be a problem with WP's No original research policies. Many of the points made in the article are editors' explanations of Cobb's writings. Is this OR? Thanks for your advice. --Jburlinson (talk) 20:28, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
I count around 20 citations to Cobb's own work or the work of his organisations, the Center for Process Studies and the Institute for the Postmodern Development of China. In addition, David Ray Griffin, author of citations #10,14-18, 24, 44-47 (eleven citations), was co-founder with Cobb of the Center for Process Studies and thus is not an independent source. Much of the material in the section "Transdisciplinary work", especially in the subsection "Religious pluralism and interreligious dialogue", appears to be the interpretation of Cobb's work by the editor rather than material found in reliable secondary sources, as there's no footnotes. I suspect there's not enough secondary sources to bring the article up to GA class. The same editor recently had Alfred North Whitehead pass to GA, and it has similar issues but not to the same degree. I'm not sure I would have passed that one either. Our other GA articles on American theologans do not have this problem (Martin Luther King, Jr., John Cotton (minister), Gene Amondson, and Andrew Sledd). -- Diannaa (talk) 23:02, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
That's pretty much what I was thinking as well. Thanks so much for your feedback. I think I'll bring this up with the nominator and put the article on hold for a week to see if interested editors can address these concerns. Much appreciated -- and thanks for the references to some other pages. --Jburlinson (talk) 00:19, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Mea culpa

Hey, Dianna. I wanted to stop by and apologize for getting snarky with you earlier this year. Sometimes, when I let myself get too caught-up in Wikidrama, I lose sight of what really matters, and that's people and friendships. You were always very kind and helpful, so I'm really sorry that I didn't show you the same level of decency and respect that you had always shown me. I hope all is well with you and yours. Cheers! The Wikipedia Library Survey

As a subscriber to one of The Wikipedia Library's programs, we'd like to hear your thoughts about future donations and project activities in this brief survey. Thanks and cheers, Ocaasi t | c 15:26, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

I'd like to finish the review, but my time available for Wikipedia has shortened considerably since I took on a batch of reviews, including Schindler's List, last month. I'm hoping the time issue should resolve itself shortly; though I've been hoping that for a little while now, so it's fairer to put the review back in the pot. I'll clear the review page, though keep it watchlisted, and if I do find I have the spare time before someone else picks up the nomination, I'll be able to finish the review (hopefully before Christmas). Sorry for the inconvenience. Regards SilkTork ✔Tea time 22:29, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the update. I am gonna return the inter-library loans, which are seriously overdue -- Diannaa (talk) 22:52, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I keep getting caught out on that - especially since my local library system decided to increase the amount of items you could borrow, but shortened the amount of time you could have them. I wonder if that was a plan to increase their revenue from the extra fines? Sometimes it's cheaper and easier to buy books second hand from Amazon and then sell them back when finished. Request

Could you have a look at my request here, please? Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk00:19, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

No I don't think I can help you with that. The page was full-protected as a content dispute. It's protected on the WP:Wrong Version, quite usual. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:27, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
Also, could you indef semi-protect this page in my userspace? Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk00:23, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
We are not supposed to protect pages pre-emptively. There needs to be active vandalism -- Diannaa (talk) 00:27, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
My userspace gets alot of vandalism, so I just have my userspace pre-emptively indef semi-protected.
Another question, how would one go about moving some userboxes from their userspace to mainspace (I'm trying to clear out some things) or even to User:UBX? - NeutralhomerTalk22:09, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
I don't think user boxes are supposed to be in main space. They should be moved to User:UBX. Here's how I would do it, loosely based on the instructions provided at Wikipedia:Userbox migration:
  1. Copy the contents of each user box page to a new location with a User:UBX prefix. For example, User:Neutralhomer/Userboxes/NYCS 3Train becomes User:UBX/NYCS 3Train. Be sure to provide attribution in the edit summary.
  2. For each user box, check "What links here" and amend each transclusion to show the new page name.
  3. Once the user box no longer has any incoming links, tag it {{db-u1}} for deletion. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:09, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
OK, I can do that. I wasn't sure about the mainspace thing as I have seen some userboxes in mainspace as templates like this one: {{User Virginia}}. That goes to a template, so I thought mainspace moves were fine. My goof. Thanks, though, for your help. - NeutralhomerTalk01:13, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Some are fine, and some are not, depending on how political they are. Best to be safe, and avoid teh drama. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:19, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Film Fan again

Hi Dianna. A while ago, Film Fan's sock added this edit to the article for Young & Beautiful. Now he's back under an IP address adding back the same info. I had the page protected for a few days, but he's returned straight away to edit war (again). Is there anything you recommend? Note - I posted this on Soham's talkpage, and they recommended I contact yourself. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 13:08, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Lugnuts. It's definitely him - I will set up a range block. Please let me know if any other IPs are spotted, and I will adjust it. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:06, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
That's a pretty broad block there -- I can't checkuser the whole range (many many too many contributions from it for checkuser to handle), but even looking just at contributions from this one sock shows (a) contributions outside the range, and (b) plentiful edits from perfectly good editors, anonymous and otherwise, at that user's one IP address within the range. --jpgordon::==( o ) 16:42, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
I have unblocked the range. You're right, it's too much. -- Diannaa (talk) 16:49, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the initital range block. What should I do now about his edits? I did have the article in question locked for a short time for IP editors, but he came straight back after it was lifted. Thanks again. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:11, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
I will add pending-changes protection to a couple of his favourite targets. I don't know what else we could try; there's no point blocking the individual IPs as he gets a new one assigned each time he visits the Internet. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:14, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Brilliant - again, many thanks for your help on this matter. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:21, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes the biggest problem with him is his Dynamic IP which assigns new IP to him everytime he connects, PC prot will be a good idea in that case. Soham 06:52, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi again. What do you think of this user's edits? First edit on 7 Nov, not long after that started to move film articles and upload film posters - IE new user with little no edit history with the same edit pattern of Film Fan. I'd like to WP:AGF, but my thoughts only lead to one place... Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 13:40, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes I've encountered him once but now I think he too is a sock of FF but this time he did not war with me, you know? Soham 15:31, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
I agree it looks suspicious and have filed a sockpuppet report. If he wants to resume editing that's fine, but he needs to apply for unblock with his original account, not create new ones. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:34, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank Diannaa. I've added a comment there. User:Soham - maybe you could add the info about the film poster edit? Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 17:37, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Diannaa, you might have seen Film Fan has requested unblock but since you're the blocking admin and I came across his disruptiveness which left me bitter for a few days, he is the tiger you don't want. This is my opinion. Other than that its solely your decision. Soham 14:47, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Soham. I have posted on his talk page -- Diannaa (talk) 15:13, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes I've seen. The quote you've used was exactly the one I was going to point out. Soham 16:50, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Xenophon

Hello I just noticed the edits on Xenophon removing apparently copyrighted material. I went to the webpage you mention and found it odd. It certainly does look like a website with copy-pastes from Wikipedia? Indeed it seems to be a listserver with posts from one person.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 15:41, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Andrew. I looked at diffs for our article prior to June 2008 and the content was not in our article, not that I could see. I have to go to work now and will investigate some more later. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:45, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi again. It looks like I made a mistake; revision #217022635 contains this content, and it is dated June 4, 2008. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:41, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Help

Is this website a Wikipedia mirror of Kim Hyun-jung (singer), or is the biography section of our article a blatant copyright violation of the website? I suspect it's a mirror because that's the only English in it - the rest is Korean. The article and the SPA editing it are both driving me crazy. I removed what I'm fairly certain is a blatant copyright violation from the lead, warned the user, but they've put it back.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:56, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

The daum.net page has not been archived by the Wayback Machine so I don't have anything to add to Stefan's information. The material from jpopasia.com is a copyright violation. I have removed it and the unsourced health information, and will watch-list -- Diannaa (talk) 23:24, 21 December 2013 (UTC) It looks like the info from jpopasia was in our article back in 2011, so they copied from us, not the other way round -- Diannaa (talk) 00:02, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for sorting all the copyright issues out, but we still have a problem with the article and the user. Even though it turned out not to be a copyright violation, they paid no attention to your warning (or anyone else's). They keep using this very odd edit summary "anti stop action", whatever that means. Also, although Malerooster did remove the unsourced health information, which the user reverted, you (Diannaa) did not, even though you said you did in your edit summary. You removed only the material from jopasia. The user is, among other things, disruptively edit warring with everyone (technically, I reverted 4x, although in good faith I thought the fourth was a copyright violation), but at this point I'm too involved to sanction the user because I was disputing other material as well. The user is removing maintenance templates, adding sources that are Wikipedia mirrors, and restoring promotional garbage - and the article, even without the user's edits, is pretty awful. Any ideas?--Bbb23 (talk) 00:18, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
I got that health info removed now. Things happen too fast, i tell you what!! It looks like the blog is also a Wikipedia mirror, which leaves the article without sources. There's sources on the Korean version but they all appear to be blogs and fansites and wiki-mirrors as well. The awards are unsourced, even on the Korean wiki. I think it's a good candidate for AFD. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:27, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
I know about the fast part (smile). The award section was originally sourced to her own website. When I removed it earlier, our friend put it back in but without the source. Do we know enough at this point to say she's not notable? AfDs of foreign subjects are problematic because I don't know enough about the sources that might make the person notable.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:34, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Korean Wikipedia has lots of links to Naver News[9] which seems to be a general news site. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:42, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
That looks like an OK source. She's not listed at Bilboard, so I wonder about these unsourced sales figures and unsourced awards. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:49, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) The singer article on the Korean Wikipedia has 43 refs. I have no desire to go through them all to determine which ones are reliable. I have enough trouble as a westerner just looking at them. Our friend seems to have taken a break, but I suspect they'll be back.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:52, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
They very likely have a COI. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:03, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
I wonder if they have an account on the Korean wiki, but I don't even know how to check. A Google translation of their user name here is "I think we".--Bbb23 (talk) 01:33, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Go to Contribs; at the very bottom, go to "accounts"; which takes you to Special:CentralAuth/나는우리. Home wiki is Korean wiki, where they've been editing since 2007. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:45, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Ooh, I never looked at that link, thanks! How do you get 2007, though? It says since April 11, 2013.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:50, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
I think 2013 is the date the accounts were unified, or maybe it's broken, I dunno for sure. Clicking through and looking at edits, I see they date back to 2007. Also, userpage log (기록 목록) takes you to this info: ko:특수:기록/나는우리 which shows the account was created on 9 September 2007. This tool shows a correct creation date for the various accounts. -- Diannaa (talk) 02:01, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
After I left my note here, I looked at my own date, and it was wrong. The page calls it "attached" or something like that, whatever that means. So many tools.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:33, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
The SUL tool is also linked at the bottom of the contribs page ("SUL"). -- Diannaa (talk) 02:40, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Faiz El-Ghusein

Sorry to bother you with minor admin tasks during Christmas, but: In October you reviewed the image File:Fairiz1.jpg for use in the article Faiz El-Ghusein. You noted that use on other pages or in different contexts may require additional review.

There's now a slow-moving edit war over the use of this image in Witnesses and testimonies of the Armenian Genocide. I'd review it myself but I am not familiar with the basis upon which you made your earlier review - specifically how the image meets the criteria for PD in the US. Any assistance you may be able to provide would be welcome. I have no view on the outcome, just in ending the to-and-fro of reverts over the last week or so. However if not available/not interested please let me know and I will list it elsewhere. Euryalus (talk) 04:16, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

A user marked the image as PD in Syria on December 24. We don't actually have any evidence that the image originated in Syryia so a PD-Syria tag is appropriate. I had marked it as okay for fair use in the biography of Faiz El-Ghusein. Non-free files are not allowed in list articles such as Witnesses and testimonies of the Armenian Genocide. -- Diannaa (talk) 17:16, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, and Merry Christmas. Euryalus (talk) 21:16, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Look who's back.....

Just when you thought it was over, the editor from Guatemala strikes back. 190.106.222.45 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)}. Anyways, Happy Holidays. Erick (talk) 04:45, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Seasons greetings to you also. IP is already blocked, -- Diannaa (talk) 17:21, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
And the IP is at it again 190.106.222.34 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). Seriously, I went to as far as go to the Spanish Wikipedia and left a message at the other IP's talk page in hopes of getting something because the Guatemalan IPs edit over there. And as usual, the IP completely ignores everything I said. Erick (talk) 05:17, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
Blocked 190.106.222.34/28 (16 IPs) for one week. Please let me know if the activity resumes, and I will widen the range. -- Diannaa (talk) 06:21, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Daily Mail

I saw your edit on Adolf Hitler removing a source from the Daily Mail. I know the newspaper has a reputation, but I cannot find anything in the Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard that says it's not a reliable source (though many admit it is WP:BIAS). I do know a few admins remove it as a source from BLPs though. Was there a discussion I am missing that says the Daily Mail is not RS? Thanks! EvergreenFir (talk) 20:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi EvergreenFir. It's not the kind of source we can use for contentious or controversial historical material in a Good Article. They are in the business of selling papers, not doing historical research, and have a history of not always being factual. The information it's being used to source in this instance is not backed up by mainstream trusted historians, which in the case of Nazi topics would be historians like Ian Kershaw, Richard J. Evans, and Peter Longerich for example. That's the kind of high-quality material we need to use as sources. Here's some stuff from the recent RSN archives and an interesting collection of news stories about the paper:
Thank you! I was just curious about the RS discussions. I agreed with your edit, I was just wondering. Thank you! EvergreenFir (talk) 02:15, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

German Army Anti-Aircraft badge

Howdy. You recently uploaded an image of a German Army Anti-Aircraft badge. It appears there isn't an actual license on the image's page though. Normally, I would just add one, but I'm wondering if the image is PD. I know at least some (if not all) of the military badges for U.S. personnel are PD. Do you know if it is the same for Germany?--Rockfang (talk) 05:10, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Oops, I have now added the missing licensetemplate: {{Non-free 3D art}} Thanks for noticing this problem. -- Diannaa (talk) 05:13, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
