MSU Interview
Dear Davidgothberg,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talk • contribs) 14:08, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the Chennai event in March, the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, or any other of our events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumanah (talk) 16:10, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Request for update
Hi. I noted many visible images are listed here. In recent days, the image File:Vynil record.jpg was deleted from Commons because it included copyrighted album covers. It was used in the WikiProjects {{albums}} and {{songs}} but since then it was replaced with the images File:Record-Album-02.jpg and File:WikiProject Songs 7" record on sheet music.png. The images are as visible as "Vynil record" (which also still linked in many talk pages). Can you add them to the list? Also, possibly File:Padlock-silver-light.svg and File:Padlock-orange.svg as they are used in WP:PC protections. Thank you in advice. Tbhotch.™ Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! As your well aware I am only getting up and running as for discussions I did not start in nor give permission for it to be further researched as this what I was working on aiming at the health service. So how you randomly started talking about my own medical experiences from the ground up, I did not give permission in my proposal emails note verbal concept in conversation to whom ever. So I would love to know how it became such a topic you tried to adopt as your own, as you have already mentioned my involvement.
Use is currently not granted for any use, academic, research, medical, personal as I had no knowledge and no right to privacy which would make it unlawful under my right to privacy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.151.13.183 (talk) 11:41, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Assistance request with Wikipedia:High-risk images
Hello Davidgothberg,
I was doing some research on WP:CSD criterion, and noticed that one of the criterion, CSD F8, had a link to Wikipedia talk:Cascade-protected items#About high-risk images explaining what a "High-risk image" is. Since this links to a section on a talk page, this isn't really an official community-approved process, and if the page gets archived, the link will eventually be broken. What I have done is the following:
- Copied the section Wikipedia talk:Cascade-protected items#About high-risk images over to a new page: Wikipedia:High-risk images.
- Placed a {{Brainstorming}} tag on Wikipedia:High-risk images until the guideline is further developed.
I'm informing you of this as you were one of the participants in Wikipedia talk:Cascade-protected items#About high-risk images. As I'm not a complete expert in the field of high-risk images, any assistance you may be able to provide in hopefully writing Wikipedia:High-risk images into a policy that can be accepted by consensus would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Steel1943 (talk) 17:52, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. secure decentralized communication
I am sad to see that the Randpeer.org website has apparently gone offline. As far as I can tell, it was an ahead-of-its-time attempt to develop software libraries for secure, decentralized (distributed) communication.
Has some other person or organization taken over maintenance of the software developed at Randpeer? Have you heard of any other projects or people working on similar software?
The TokTok Project ( https://toktok.github.io/ ) and the Tox project ( http://tox.chat/ ) are apparently currently working together to develop a software library for secure, decentralized (distributed) communication.
