Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

David Thomsen: Prolific Wikipedian and Guild member David Thomsen (Dthomsen8) died in November 2022. He was a regular copy editor who took part in many of our Drives and Blitzes. An obituary was published in the mid-July issue of The Signpost. Tributes can be left on David's talk page.

Election news: In our mid-year Election of Coordinators, Dhtwiki was chosen as lead coordinator, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo continue as assistant coordinators, and Baffle gab1978 stepped down from the role. If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself!

June Blitz: Of the 17 editors who signed up for our June Copy Editing Blitz, 12 copy-edited at least one article. 70,035 words comprising 26 articles were copy-edited. Barnstars awarded are here.

July Drive: 34 of the 51 editors who took part in our July Backlog Elimination Drive copy-edited at least one article. They edited 276 articles and 683,633 words between them. Barnstars awarded are here.

August Blitz: In our August Copy Editing Blitz, 13 of the 16 editors who signed up worked on at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 79,608 words comprising 57 articles. Barnstars awarded are available here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo.

Hello. Thank you for creating this script. However, I would like to ask that instead of adding colons to suppress categories, could you alter the script so that it wraps the categories — minus categories intentionally containing drafts — in {{Draft categories}}? I previously made a similar request at the AfC helper script's talk page, though a fix has not yet been implemented there. Thanks. InfiniteNexus (talk) 16:31, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Sorry I don't think I'll have time to get around to figuring out how to do this DannyS712 (talk) 13:48, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello DannyS712,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Hi Danny! I recently wrote the article Mê Linh Square without awareness that close paraphrasing is indeed an issue, so it was listed for discussion. I looked up for more sources and rewrote it at User:Đại Việt quốc/Mê Linh Square. Please help me resolve this case and if there is still any issue, let me know. Thanks and have a great day! Đại Việt quốc (talk) 00:47, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

@Đại Việt quốc sorry, I don't think I'm going to have time to investigate this, and it looks like it is already being addressed at the copyright problems page DannyS712 (talk) 04:13, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
No worries! I was only asking because I thought the process was simply checking against the sources and make sure that the wordings are different enough to have the case resolved, never expected that it would be something much more complicated than that. November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello DannyS712:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1800 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Redirect of new page Juan Pablo Segura

I started a page on this entrepreneur who is now running for state office in Virginia. The bot converted it to a redirect that omits the initial bit of substantive content I included to get the bio page past a mere listing of his candidacy. I think the separate page stub should be restored. SPECIFICO talk 17:23, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

@SPECIFICO my bot just patrols redirects, the actual redirect was done in Special:Diff/1183478209 by @Pppery --DannyS712 (talk) 19:49, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello thanks for the quick reply. I was expecting that once the page was up, editors would add content since he seems to have generated some controversy in this election and has had some other somewhat noteworthy coverage in sources that would seem to meet GNG. SPECIFICO talk 19:53, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
@SPECIFICO Okay, but I have nothing to do with that page content and haven't looked into it, its Pppery that you should talk to about the redirect decision DannyS712 (talk) 19:54, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I understand. I just replied here in case @Pppery: checked your ping. SPECIFICO talk 21:15, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Request

I've started a revamp of Wikipedia:Tools/Optimum tool set.

Please take a look and let me know if there are any essential techniques or must have tools that you think should be included.

Thank you.

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   06:48, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

@The Transhumanist I'll take a look, but I've been inactive for a while recently and so I might not be the best person to ask. The one thing I'll point to is the GlobalWatchlist extension that I wrote as, in my view, essential for cross-wiki users. DannyS712 (talk) 08:19, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
Nice. I'll be accessing my watchlist from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalWatchlist from now on.
I've added it at Wikipedia:Tools/Optimum tool set#Global watchlist.
Feel free to edit it to make sure it is explained right.    — The Transhumanist   07:18, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
@The Transhumanist looks good to me,, thanks --DannyS712 (talk) 07:22, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Cool. By the way, what other must have tools are missing from the set?    — The Transhumanist   07:32, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
@The Transhumanist none come to mind but I was also inactive for a while and so am not caught up on the latest tools DannyS712 (talk) 07:34, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
You're more caught up than me. Except for the past month or two, I've been pretty much out of active editing for the past 4 years! And you were the userscript King. You've got to have an inkling of what editors need.    — The Transhumanist   07:37, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Not really, you can check my common.js but I don't know how representative it is DannyS712 (talk) 07:40, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Wow, the list of scripts you have installed in there is huge! I'm impressed. Which ones are your favorites?    — The Transhumanist   08:02, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Not sure - at this point I've used them for so long I'm not sure what is a part of the normal interface, what comes from my global.js, and what comes from each script DannyS712 (talk) 08:04, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
LOL. You've become fused with the machine! Where do you end, and Wikipedia begin? I'll probably try to reverse engineer your global js at some point. Thanks for the input. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   08:53, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Notice

The article List of Skal vi danse? participants has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No context provided, no sources provided, and no information gleaned.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Hey, I saw a interesting script, Redirectify that you had created a while back. Currently, your script doesn't really work due to a change in the morebits API (as well as it being somewhat invalid in not using a {{Redirect category shell}} template). Since I was interested in using the script in performing BLARs, I've forked your script and fixed some issues with it at User:Sohom_Datta/Redirectify. Since you mentioned that you would not be actively maintaining the script on the talk page, would it be okay to redirect the current (kinda broken) version of your script to mine ? Ask if DannyS712 bot running?

Greetings, For DannyS712 bot (task # 55 ), last ran Database reports/Orphans with incoming links at 21:00, 8 December 2023. Had updated every 4-days or so. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 14:55, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@JoeNMLC it looks like it missed the last run, if it doesn't update the next round I'll look into it DannyS712 (talk) 00:26, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi DannyS712 - just three questions about DannyS712 bot
Question 1 - When I last read the docs (quite a long time ago) it said bot runs Daily, so I'm curious why it only Updates the page every 4 days or so?
Question 2 - Wondering why the low number of Orphan articles for each update? Since this summer I've been un-tagging many Orphan articles, driven by Query results here. From the 2014 backlog, I removed over 1,600 articles; 2015 backlog-over 2,200 articles. Have not done tally for 2016, but the numbers are similar.
Question 3 - Can the bot "target" Category "current month"? That's where much tagging is actively happening (NPP; Twinkle; AWB) - all imperfect tools that make it easy to Orphan tag (without doing "What links here").
Thanks. JoeNMLC (talk) 14:51, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
@JoeNMLC some of the tasks run daily but I think the orphans task is only every 4 days. I'm not sure about the limit and changing the target - its been a *while* since I last touched that bot, but if I have time over the next few weeks I'll try to take a look and see DannyS712 (talk) 20:21, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Done - Reporting the bot ran at 21:00, 20 December 2023. So it looks to be back on-track. Thanks. Cheers, JoeNMLC (talk) 04:50, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

EFM granted

Hi, I've granted EFM per the request. The usual reminders would be to make sure that you've got good account security and review WP:EF. But I'm pretty sure you know this stuff already. Thanks for volunteering to help out! 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 00:33, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

@0xDeadbeef Indeed, I'm familiar with the "usual reminders" but it doesn't hurt to be reminded again, especially given how sensitive edit filter editing is. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 01:31, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

There is a mop reserved in your name

You are a remarkable editor in many ways. You would be a good administrator, in my opinion, and appear to be well qualified. You personify an administrator without tools and have gained my support already!

You do a lot of technical work, and I'm happy to see you take on the role of EFM. You are a trusted user and I think that you would be a good fit for the tools. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 22:44, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

@Red-tailed hawk thanks! Given that I recently returned from inactivity and don't have much time to consistently devote to enwiki, I don't think I have a need for the tools, but who knows, that might change one day --DannyS712 (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, likely couldn't pass right now due to enwiki monthly edits graph, but would be a strong candidate if that got fixed. Doesn't hurt to plant the seed! :) –Novem Linguae (talk) 00:15, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Redirects

Hi Danny, I know it's kinda strange, anyway I was wondering if your bot (as almost always does this) can hit my redirects I've done today. Thanks! --Discographer (talk) 23:16, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

@Discographer the bot runs periodically and will patrol all redirects that match the programmed rules, see User:DannyS712 bot III/rules for details --DannyS712 (talk) 05:15, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. It was ... later than usual. Thanks for always doing this, though. Best, --Discographer (talk) 10:10, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
