Gentle Giant Moving Co wiki
I am trying to create a wiki for my company, Gentle Giant Moving Co., Inc. As an employee of this company, I have been given explicit permission to use information from our website on the wikipedia page, so long as it is encyclopedic and not spam. I am getting an error that CorenSearchBot is finding that some of the wiki has been plagarized from the Gentle Giant website. While I have used information from the website, I have been given explicit permission to do so from the creators and maintainers of the website. Please send me a message if this is a problem. Thanks. My bonfire
Wow ... I didn't expect it to go well when HiDrNick nominated me, but I didn't expect it to go that badly. Thanks for getting the point. I'm just going to let this fire burn for the whole week, unless someone in charge of the process pulls the plug. I think it's interesting.—Kww(talk) 17:29, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Image permissions
Hi Coren. I have recently had permission to use some images from the Geological Survey of Canada website here and elsewhere made by scientists named Catherine Hickson and Melanie Kelman (which are copyrighted on the GSC website and elsewhere) and they said I can use them without a problem and I have permission to use them on Wikipedia. Anyway I just wanted to tell you this because on Commons it mentions you are one of the OTRS volunteers. Contact me for more infomation. Black Tusk (talk) 17:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Please see this. I don't understand why you unblocked Tajik, he has been insulting Afghans, Afghanistan, Pashtun, Pashto speakers, and spreading extreme Persian POVs, vandalising all Afghanistan related articles, and creating sockpuppets. Many of his sockpuppets were added as User:Beh-nam's socks because they both used the socks and shared passwords. Please indef ban him again because he will never stop his bad behaviour. Thanks!--Irozee (talk) 22:28, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

John J. McCusker
(History1898 (talk) 01:37, 6 October 2008 (UTC)) Portions of the John J. McCusker article have been re-written to avoid a copyright infringement with the Trinity U bio. However, it's possible the bot will still raise a red flag, due to the simple fact that many of his books have very long titles and listing them gives the appearance that material has been copied. Likewise with lists of schools or people.
GLBasic
Hello
I've received a message telling me about copyright violation in new GLBasic Article, as the bot detected it share a lot of text from http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/GLBASIC which is where I copied the article from before some editing.
That website articles are licensed under GNU Free Documentation License which permits using it this way. Hence I removed the tag. However, I left this note here following the bot message direction.

The bot didn't realize that moralnafirma.pl is a Wikimirror. DS (talk) 14:15, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's much too dumb to do so on its own. I've added it to the exclusion list. — Coren (talk) 14:18, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
I would advise the bot to check whether the website in question is a wikipedia mirror. I would suggest you to put cramster.com into the ignore list: I suspect it doesn't own any copyrights, just "crams" the work of others. Twri (talk) 00:25, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Unblocking PatPeter
May I ask why you unblocked PatPeter without even notifying the blocking admin, without waiting for some kind of consensus to form? I recall there being similar issues when you unblocked Kurt Weber recently. Just curious... Aunt Entropy (talk) 05:33, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Because blocks aren't punitive, they're preventative. In both cases, the immediate cause of the block was alleviated (Kurt chose to stay away from project space, PatPeter stated being willing to concentrate on mainspace and has stopped socking). All users need to be given the opportunity to return productively, or, in the alternative, be given enough rope to hang themselves— it takes little effort or time to see which it ends up being.
- As for the blocking admin, both cases are completely unrelated: in one case the block was brought to community review immediately, and in the other case it was an appeal to a very old block from an admin who is nowadays mostly active on commons. — Coren (talk) 12:47, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Al Orthodoxiya
Good day,
Regarding AL Orthodoxiya Radio Station Article, I'm the one who created the srticcle on Orthodoxwiki, that's why you cannot consider the article as a violation to the copyrights.
The Article contains information about the 1st Arabic Orthodox Radio Station on the net in the World and I guess this information should be mentioned in the Wikipedia...
If you have any suggested amendments to the article I'll be more than happy to discuss.
Thank you
Orthodoxiya (talk) 11:46, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
One of the advantages of not having many supporters at your RFA is that there are fewer people to thank at the end. Thanks for your support and your willingness to look at my complete record. I'm going to try to interpret this resounding defeat as a statement that I should choose my words more carefully in the future, and remember that every statement I make gets recorded forever, just waiting to get carefully transcribed onto my next RFA. I would go insane if I believed that it was repudiation of what I truly meant: that no editor should consciously and willfully ignore guidelines and policies, and editors that repeatedly do so should not be rewarded for or supported in doing so.
I'm sure I'll get back to full speed editing soon, because, after all, , every day, and in every way, I am getting better and better.—Kww(talk) 05:23, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

CorenSearchBot makes a very interesting find - realtime mirroring
I just happened to see CorenSearchBot's message about Foot orienteering being a copy of http://www.ppgracing.pl/?title=Orienteering, and clicked on the link. It leads to what is apparently a live mirroring site, powered by something called "Wikipedia Reflection Script", located here. Seems the Foundation has been trying to shut this down for a while, based on the posting there. Will leave it to you to determine next steps. Best, Risker (talk) 19:38, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Coren, didn't you last March or so have a proposal for a bot that would sub-thread AN/ANI/etc. and tried it out for a while on BON? I've only read and commented quickly 'cause it's bedtime for me, but could you look at this RefDesk talk page - isn't SteveBaker's concept exactly what you designed the bot to do? Sub-pages for the Wikipedia Reference Desks.
User:Franamax tells me that you have been thinking about how to make long discussion-type pages be implemented as a bunch of sub-pages. I'm thinking specifically that the Reference Desks would benefit from having each question that is asked be created in a sub-page instead of one gigantic stream - particularly in order that the people who ask questions will get watchlist notification that their question has elicited a response - rather than (as now) that some question somewhere has been answered. Anyway - I'd be interested to hear what you've been thinking...and if there are links to prior discussions on this kind of topic - that would be good too. Thanks in advance. SteveBaker (talk) 18:12, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- I've already got a working implementation, but when I suggested deploying it, there was no consensus. I can brush the cobwebs off and point it at the reference desks if you get consensus to do so. — Coren (talk) 12:22, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Coren, I've searched around and tried to summarize your bot function and the related discussions - see here. I'm not sure if I caught all the relevant threads. I hope there isn't a standoff here: you want consensus before brushing the cobwebs off; we will want more information before giving consensus. All I can do is cheerlead and try to help on the technical issues, but we will need your engagement to get this working.
- BTW, why did you stop operating the bot at WT:BON? Franamax (talk) 06:52, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Navarini
Hello Corin,
Just wanted to let you that both the Florida Wing website (www.flwg.us) and the Pembroke Pines Composite Squadron website www.pinesCAP.flwg.us) are NOT copywrited sites, and as sites of subordinate units in the Air Force Auxiliary, are in the public domain.
Please feel free to use this information without legal ramifications.
Colonel Navarini is a great man and leader in our community, actualy across Florida. I would not be surpriced if we see him as Wing (state) Commander in a few years. He is also very involved with the Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul (feeding poor people) and that knight stuff I don't understand, so you should include him in Wilkapedia. You can also pull his picture and add it to the article. You can find it on both websites. In the Wing website, he's in the Public Affairs" section, and on the Squadron site, he's the commander, but you would know that if you read my article.
Thanks

The Coren Search Bot noted this page as being similar to another page,Speech technology - this is because I was separating the content of these two pages, and have now deleted the duplicate material on the other page, and expanded it. Suggestion for a new function for CorenSearchBot
Would it be possible for CorenSearchBot to assist us in telling the difference between a potential WP:PNT candidate and a speedy A2 candidate? -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 01:56, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- Not trivially; CSBot relies on search engine ranking to find likely candidates for source material, and the Wikipedias in languages other than a handful (English, French and German) tend to pop up rarely, if ever, on those searches. It might be possible to do so by tweaking what search queries are made, but I'd need a sample set to do so; do you have a few examples I can examine? — Coren (talk) 12:25, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
You could take a look at the current nominees at WP:PNT. Sometimes an editor will copy and paste something from a foreign-language Wikipedia and translate only the title, expecting us to do the rest. Sometimes, they won't even bother to translate the title either. A common occurrence is an article with a title written in the Latin alphabet, leaving no doubt that the article is biographical, yet the rest is written in a foreign writing system (most commonly Arabic or Chinese). It should be noted that about half of the pages that get listed on PNT end up being speedied on grounds other than A2. One current nomination, for an article in Hebrew, contains a note that an article with the same title has been deleted twice from the Hebrew Wikipedia, though because we don't understand the language we cannot tell whether this was a speedy or some other process. -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 00:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

IFD
I haven't got a problem with people giving reasoned ideas to keep the image (see my reply to MivkMacNee, who I've had lots of run-ins with in the past) but I do have a serious problem with an admin who is closely involved with those articles trying to dismiss policy purely for that reason - I know NFCC is disputed, but some parts of it are solid and this image fails them. I can't make any apologies for being aggressive here - if this IFD results in a Keep, we might as well throw our image policies in the bin, because every time fair-use overuse is challenged, people will point to this IFD as precedent. It really is that important. Black Kite 12:53, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Just to make sure I understand you, are you saying I did not apply reasoning when I argued to keep the image, or under the impression that I'm "closely involved" in Dr. Who articles? — Coren (talk) 17:25, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Er, neither. I have no problem with your reasoning on the issue (though I disagree with you), and the admin I'm talking about is User:Edokter, not you. Black Kite 19:25, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

invitation
Actually, the invitation was quite sincere. It was just that after I saw your follow on comment, I realized it was extremely unlikely you would ever consider doing that. Further, I'm not interested in arguing, with yet another user, why fair use must be limited per Foundation dictum. It's just not worth time and effort, because all it has yielded is an extremely polarized community between those who get it (like User:Angr) and those who don't. I'm not saying you don't per se, just that we disagree on level. The simple fact is, the goal of being a free content encyclopedia has been lost. With the possible exception of Flickr, we are the world's largest repository of non-free content. Certainly we are the world's largest if we ignore sites that have no focus on their content (i.e., random content throughout, like Flickr). That we have lost doesn't motivate me to jump on the fair-use-is-legal-therefore-its-ok bandwagon, and start pumping my fist in the air every time someone uploads yet another fair use image. I can and will fight to the maximum of my time and ability the continued erosion of the free content status of this resource.
My invitation was sincere, I can assure you. I would love nothing more than to work with a group of fair use loving users to produce a well thought out proposal to be put forth to the Foundation as to why their incredibly inclusive stance on fair use is the proper method of making a truly great encyclopedia. The Foundation will no doubt rather loudly and firmly tell them they are in error. Maybe then this dispute will finally end. As it stands now, I stand strongly by the stance voiced in the second userbox from the top on my userpage.
It's not necessary for you to respond. I know you firmly disagree with my stance as to level of fair use acceptance. To be frank, there's no way in hell you can change my stance on inclusiveness of fair use above Foundation standards. And no, I'm sorry, I don't by the gibberish people (not saying you) frequently spout that it's all open to interpretation and therefore everyone is right. But, if you are willing to put together a work group to make a proposal to the Foundation to liberally allow fair use, feel free to contact me. I would be a willing and genuine participant in such a proposal. --Hammersoft (talk) 21:51, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with your position is that, in fact, the foundation does allow fair use. It would have been trivial for them to emit a directive that none should be used whatsoever, and it would be a tenable philosophical position, but they explicitly chose not to go that way. — Coren (talk) 22:48, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- You'll note of course that I did not say the Foundation said no fair use. --Hammersoft (talk) 22:50, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- No, but you do keep saying "[use of fair use] above foundation standards" and the fact is, how much "too much" is has been left unspecified and vague, leaving it to the individual (or collective) appreciation. My own criterion are (obviously) more liberal than yours, but they are no more "above Foundation standards" than yours are— barring a statement from the Foundation about what, exactly, they meant to allow. — Coren (talk) 00:12, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- See my above comments regarding "it's all open to interpretation". So we're back to square one, and hey let's let as much fair use as individual opinion says is ok since it's all open to interpretation and nobody is any more right than anyone else. Onwards fair use believers! --Hammersoft (talk) 02:11, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- That means that you were correct, even if you would rather not have been really. :-) I don't disagree that getting the foundation to quantify how much would be a Good Thing™. — Coren (talk) 02:57, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

template needed
Hello,
I see on your user page that you are a WikiElf.
As you can see in a current peer-review, articles with hundreds of overwikified words need a handy de-wikify template in order to show, as a hatnote tag, that there's a problem with an article.
I wonder if there's a plan to create a "de-wikify" template?

- If I understand you correctly, you're looking for a maintenance template that states something like "too many wikilinks; please fix"? You probably want
{{overlinked}}
, then. :-) — Coren (talk) 01:05, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yeap! I didn't know that the template existed. (I already tagged it.) Thanks! —Cesar Tort 01:10, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Schultz v. Wheaton Glass Co.
Schultz v. Wheaton Glass Co. is ready to have its tag removed; I'll see to that. Thanks. Moderate2008 (talk) 03:02, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
The bot just tagged the above article for being a copy of a page [1]. I can't check the nature of this page due to my work's internet filter, but it seems to be either a proxy or nothing to do with the page I made. Cheers. El Pollo Diablo (Talk) 12:13, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Daniel B. Poneman
Coren, I have reposted the "Daniel B. Poneman" article with quotes and citations for the text which is taken directly from The Scowcroft Group website, where I work. Being new to Wikipedia, I am unsure what else to do. Does citing the source of the text not make it clear where it originated? 38.112.25.114 (talk) 15:10, 28 October 2008 (UTC) Peter Neville PeterNeville@scowcroft.com

Kantamani marked as similar to Yagapriya
These are musical scales in Carnatic music. These are parent scales (melakarta per Carnatic music terminology) which are superficially similar, including in scientific notation, but are quite different in the musical aspect. They are quite important in this music and warrant separate pages which will be expanded further in due course of time. When further information is added to Kantamani and Yagapriya this will be more apparent. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 16:25, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Hammersoft claiming to speak for you
In User talk:Kww#Montage images as navigational elements, Hammersoft claims that he knows your opinion on Image:CheetahGirlsDiscography.jpg, which is being discussed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2008 October_29#Image:CheetahGirlsDiscography.jpg.E2.80.8E. Please let me know if he represented your views accurately.—Kww(talk) 18:26, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- I kind of wish you hadn't honored the speedy. It'd be handy to be able to just slap "db-repost" on it any time he felt like doing this again.—Kww(talk) 22:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Meh, not like he wouldn't know to change the album list or something. Just closing this pointless "discussion" soon was my objective. — Coren (talk) 03:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- True enough. Since you're up, could you do me a favor and look at this? It's been sitting there a while.—Kww(talk) 04:07, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

block aftermath
Although I feel miffed that FP managed to get me blocked yet again... there was no point further appealing the block. I've been here long enough to realize in most situations admins unaware of our "history" are going to take the easiest course to resolution.
I just want to state for the record in case I am the target of attack on the noticeboard by FP again (who incidentally yet again found a reason to squeeze my name in... for an incident on my talkpage that I had absolutely nothing to do with)... I still believe my comments with regards to FP being in a COI (on several fronts). Again... he made no attempt to disclose a possible COI to noticeboard... no mention of our history... no mention of my prior discussions with other admins.
btw -I harbor no bad feelings that you stuck by your block. You diffs seem to show you're a reasonable fellow so I'll just have to learn from the experience. --Crossthets (talk) 01:08, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
P-Cat: Life Cycle
It appears you have said i copied text, which is true. But this is a poem from Bruce Dawe, so go home you fucked up fat cunt. Go suck some balls cos i dont like this mutherfucking system. Sorry! Regards, The little maestro, P-Cat
- Dear P-Cat: Your tone here is unnecessarily harsh and uncalled for. Please see WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA. Politeness goes a long way here, and screaming profanities just doesn't go over very well. ⇔ ∫ÆS dt @ 02:24, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Cusco pages
Hi there. Many of the pages for Cusco albums have been created long ago under various longwinded or inaccurate titles. Rather than simply deleting out all the old entries, I created redirects to the new pages. I could possibly just delete the unnecessary pages by now, but there are still links to be found which lead to these, and it seems to me that a redirect is better than leaving the surfer stranded. Thanks!

Steve Green (science fiction activist)
I've replaced this entry with Steve Green (journalist), which is the way he describes himself. (What is a "science fiction" activist"?). If you can place a redirect on the redundant page, that would be great.
It's also odd that anyone called "Steve Green", other than the singer, is placed in a list under "Stephen Green". This guy's "Steve" is short for "Steven". GeorgeLloyd (talk) 16:36, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's probably because you are American. :-) The given name "Stephen" is traditionally pronounced [stɪvən], just like "Steven". I think the [stəfən] pronounciation is strictly US-centered. — Coren (talk) 18:22, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
OTRS ticket (2007122210004268 - trademark guy)
Woops, good thing I refreshed the ticket, I almost sent a duplicate email of yours. I thought I had the ticket locked oO. I was crafting an email to Mike Godwin, do you think it's still needed? -- lucasbfr talk 20:34, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Heh. No, I just chatted with the guy to clarify things; I'll be giving a quick summary on the AN/I thread, it turns out that we probably don't want that logo. :-) — Coren (talk) 20:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

- Not while the OSS existed as such, no, is my understanding. The logo was created by vets after the OSS was replaced. — Coren (talk) 21:34, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Okie Dokie...that clears up MUCH confusion. Also, it puts us on the same page as well. Sorry about the initial confusion with the image. Take Care...NeutralHomer • Talk • October 30, 2008 @ 21:38
