Welcome :)

If it helps, following that post, I was drawn to try and sum up my own views on RfA, for anyone else in future who wanted to know. So here they are: User:FT2/RfA. Enjoy!

Pro-Gravity and its Like

[edit]

I'm confused about the deletion of these articles. First, when did newspapers become unreliable sources? Second, why was the 200 North article deleted when a member of the band verifiably went on to join two undeniably notable bands? Third,I thought there had to be consensus (an article, by the way, that merely gets tagged for siting no references, a common practice it seems on Wikipedia, while these articles were deleted for having what I feel has unfairly defined as unreliable sources), meaning "1. majority of opinion" or "2. general agreement or concord; harmony," neither of which are true in this situation.

Your insight would be very much appreciated.

Automated message for new article

When creating the article Rose of England, I received an automated response from your bot about possible copyright infringement on an external link. I had used that same page to check the lyrics to the song, is this allowed? I removed the content I pasted from that other site until you get back to me. CSB

[edit]

Hi, could you have the CSB add new copyvios to the bottom of the list at WP:SCV? That's how Wherebot does it. Thanks lots!! -- But|seriously|folks  18:39, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, just noticed it's transcluded in. I assume that's temporary until it has a bit of a track record. It's easier to work with WP:SCV if the entries are chronological and all written to the same page. But that can wait until the bot is fully tested. -- But|seriously|folks  18:41, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Coren, it did a really great job! Wherebot flags PD articles from .mil as well, so that's no problem. The tagging feature is great, because it gives the author an opportunity to rectify the situation before someone from WP:SCV even gets to it. I'm very impressed so far. Great job!! -- But|seriously|folks  21:04, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I just do it manually... not clever enough to do anything else! But I think your bot is doing great. I was a bit confused about what to do when the Corenbot has tagged something, so I'm glad you have been in touch. It didn't seem to put them into the CSD category and so I just decided put my own tag on too to do the deed. Maybe it is not necessary though??? --Slp1 02:14, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just as a side note, circular copies can help finding cut and paste moves, so perhaps you'd want not tagging the article but listing them with a comment when you find one. -- lucasbfr talk 13:09, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Making a bot is terrible

[edit]

Making a bot is terrible, in my view, as it has the potential to be misused. I think that it should done away with. - (Numismaticman 08:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

A bot is just tool. If some deletionist is chasing up the bot's actions and speedily and thoughlessly deleting articles, this is terrible. Could the bot finding copyright violations just inform the founding editor of the article, suggesting
  • use various sources.
  • acknowledge quotations (Use Blockquote).
  • paraphrase rather than copy, using "encyclopaedic tone of voice".
  • anything else that reduces the risk of accusations of plagiarism or legal claims.
if no improvement after, say 48 hours, then place a warning tag. It would be terrible if WP gained a reputation for loosing copyright legal challenges!

List of Airports in Baja California Sur

[edit]

About the "similarities" between this newly created page and the "List of airports in Puerto Rico", i have to inform that Baja California Sur is a mexican state, not puertorican, thus the cities and the airports are different. As an example of this statement, the airports of Los Cabos, La Paz and Loreto are south californian airports, while San Juan is a city in Puerto Rico, far far away from this North Western mexican state. --Omar1976 19:33, 8 August 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Your bot flagged this article as similar to the page 10th Division (German Empire). They are different pages, but I am using similar templates to build each of the division pages, so they will often be similar to each other in structure, differing only in specific campaigns, subordinate units, and the like. I have removed the tag. Regards, Airbornelawyer 22:48, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again. Your bot flagged 20th Division (German Empire) as also being similar to 10th Division (German Empire). If anything, since they were both part of the same corps and recruited from the same part of Germany, the 20th Division article is far more similar to the 19th Division article than either are to the 10th Division article. I don't know why your bot is flagging these, but not the other 30-40 articles I've written using essentially the same division template. Airbornelawyer 02:44, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is getting ridiculous. Now I get the same message for 21st Division (German Empire). This is the 46th article I have created or revised based on the same template for German divisions. Why all of the sudden is your bot bothering me? There will be approximately 251 Imperial German divisions following the template, with minor variations. I do not want to go through this annoyance 200 more times. Airbornelawyer 03:51, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Black Easter and The Day After Judgment are distinct pages

[edit]

Just for the record, I am working on building a page for The Day After Judgment. This page currently shares a lot of the text from Black Easter because it is the sequel novel to that book. Right now, Black Easter has the synopsis for both books, and I thought it was useful to have essentially the same information on the other page because the two books are extremely closely related, and sometimes even published together.

However, there is an IMPORTANT difference. Each book cites a different set of Grimoires, and as Blish makes a big deal about the authenticity of these books, I wanted to create complete, accurate, and DISTINCT lists of these books. If there are other important ways to distinguish these pages, I hope you can help me to find them. For my purposes, preserving the lists seperately is very important. Bot behavior when splitting off material

[edit]

Hi. I was doing disambiguation cleanup work on the disambiguation page Locality and had to split off material to a new wiki article (Locality (statistics)) because it had gotten too long and detailed for a dab page. It then took a few more moments to clean up the rest of the dab page when your bot had already alerted me that Locality (statistics) is almost identical to the current (not yet saved) Locality. Could your program your bot to wait a few minutes before it notifies users of similiar wikipedia articles (in the case that there is splitting off going on)? A similar situation to Sgeureka's split of Locality (statistics). No problem, I understand. I am doing a huge amount of these, moving lists of people off disambig pages to their own surname or given name articles. You may want to consider informing the bot that Sgeureka and I are experienced disambig-page-splitters, and have it disregard changes made by us, at least if the apparent duplicate is within Wikipedia. As for your suggestion to save the split-from page first, I prefer to save the split-to page first, as I would rather have to remove a tag than have a reader find a red link where the new article's blue link should be. (Despite removing the tag and adding a "hangon" template, the page was still deleted. Still trying to follow up with the administrator on that one...) AndrewGNF 16:05, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marjorie Franklin

[edit]

I've removed the copyvio tag from the Marjorie Franklin article and I've explained why on the talk page. The article makes a few simple statements of fact which cannot be copyrighted. It's difficult to imagine these simple facts being presented with very great differences of sentence construction. I've chaged them as much as possible but facts are facts and will always be similar when stated in biographies. --wayland 04:53, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If this bot is incapable of filtering mirrors of wikipedia (it may also be a simple copy of what i and others have written/copy-edited here over time), than it shouldn't be tagging pages. I know because I've been with this article since the main series article since the beginning. This is the second time i've seen this, the first being on Schneizel El Britannia. Hi. I just blocked your bot (no offense!) because it had started tagging my own bot's creations as copyvios, and I knew it would continue doing so for a long time unless I stopped him. :-) My bot (User:Polbot) gets info from the Congressional Bioguide, a public domain source. Infoplease also gets information from this same PD source. So Polbot's copy isn't a copyvio. Could you modify the bot to ignore edits made by trusted bots? (Polbot has an approved bot flag.) unlclear tagging by bot at Electronic art music

[edit]

Hi - I saw this note from the bot, but I think what it found was a blog that copied from Wikipedia and not the other way around. I'm not sure, but that's how it looks because the blog includes the Wikipedia link.

Also the bot went to History of Electronic Music but that was a new move of Electronic art music which has now been moved back over redirect.

CSB exclusion behavior

[edit]

What do you think about having an alternative version of the excluded domains list in addition to the current version where hits from those domains result in a message on the article's talk page and a note in a log but not the big copyvio template on the article itself? For example, I don't think it's OK to blanket exclude all .gov / .mil domains and sites that happen to copy PD content like historycentral, etc. Government websites often include information that was not created by the government and is not PD. Also, I believe I have seen blanket site permissions for sites where some content is itself copied from somewhere else and so the permission doesn't apply to those portions.

re USHMM specifically: I found several places where OTRS was mentioned but very little info on the permission given and the notices at the USHMM website are very restrictive. Maybe USHMMwestheim (talk · contribs) should be made an ally instead of excluding all of ushmm.org? (incidentally, this term "exclusion" is tripping me up. how's whitelist sound?)

I may be out on a limb here but, I think the only sources that should be excluded completely would be those which self limit or are somehow legally limited to compatible content such as the Commons.

I think it would be best to have the sites on the new list hand checked to make sure the source page doesn't mention restrictions that are a problem, etc. Maybe have the user that checks the source modify the article talk page template to indicate their findings and then have the bot update it's subpage with the info. Anyway, just brainstorming... Let me know what you think :)

btw, I saw you were maintaining a list of mirrors there as well. I guess you prolly already saw this, but just in case: Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks --Jeremyb 20:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I'll remove the source site and add USHMMwestheim (talk · contribs) to the list of allies instead; probably better that way.
About the terminology— it's not an accident but a consequence of CSBot design: contents from the listed site isn't whitelisted per se, but those sides are specifically excluded from comparisons. Hence the name. I tought "whitelist" would have been more confusing.
Oh, and the mirrors that are tracked are the only ones, to date, that actually pop up in search results. The whole list would be... painful.  :-)
As far the what an excluded site does, you've got something there. I can probably tweak the behavior if the best match is an excluded site; but that'd require that I do fetch and compare those, thus limiting the number of other sites I check (I limit the number of web fetches I perform per new article to constrain time and bandwidth). Perhaps this should be discussed on Wikipedia talk:Suspected copyright violations first? — Coren (talk) 01:52, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
re terminology: OK, that makes sense and it's not really a big deal for me (but I did have to fix it a few times :P)
re mirrors: hehe, just wanted to be sure you knew about the other list
re exclusion behavior: Well I don't know how the algorithm works now wrt to fetching page content for hits but I would guess you have to do that anyway in order to rate the degree of convergance. Which results of the set do you examine now (either fetched or just from the results) and how do you decide whether to fetch? just look at the top hit now?
Originally, I figured that wouldn't have to change:
  • If it would be marked as a match after excluding all exclusions then it's a match
  • if it wouldn't be marked as a match before considering exclusions then it's not a match
  • if it wouldn't be marked as a match after exclusions for sites on the absolute exclusion list than it's not a match
  • if it would be marked as a match after the absolute exclusions but not after the subjective exclusions then the new behavior comes into play: Put it on a special list of things that need attention but might be legit, leave a template on the talk page, leave the article itself alone, etc.
I don't think I've seen the messages it leaves yet (and it might already do this) but I think it would be useful for it to include the first few hits beyond a threshold of convergence for any human inspectors that might follow. I can often be found on IRC in WMF channels (nick=uname) if you want to chat and I'd be interested in seeing your code if you don't mind (but it's not a big deal). I'm game for any broader forum for discussion that you think is appropriate, but my time and internet access will both be limited until Monday. --Jeremyb 17:09, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, I guess I could coerce my code into doing that without too much difficulty. I don't mind showing the code if you don't mind ugly perl with no comments.  :-) Lemme sanitize the passwords away and I'll post it somewhere. — Coren (talk) 22:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The new article I just created is a stub that mostly consists of a listing of the songs in the show. The other article you found is a listing of songs on the LP, hence the match. It isn't a copyright violation so much as two separate listings of the same facts. Nat 07:13, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Both my new article and the web-page you found drew on the book's cover blurb, hence the similarity. I've now deleted that material from the article, making it an even stubbier stub than it already was. Nat 07:33, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This page is a new page for one that was called 'Chili powder' which was confusing because there is also a 'chili powder', so I created 'chili mix', now it turns out someone copied the entire Wikipedia page from Chili powder' and put it on a website, but as you will notice it clearly says " Chili powder From, Wikipedia the free encyclopedia" so actually it is a copy of Wikipedia, it is not Wiki that is making the violation. The bot is confused so please read the webpage and it is clear. Also see the history of the old 'chili powder' page. Seth J. Frantzman 00:09, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Allopathic

[edit]

You declined allopathic because you say that multiple editors are involved in the case. Since you're a participant at third opinion, I'm wondering if you have a suggestion for where the case might be brought next. RfC requires that multiple users have raised an issue on an editor's talk page and are willing to request an RfC, which I think is unlikely here. The Mediation Cabal states that they are unable to deal with content issues, which are involved in this dispute. I'm sort of stumped as to where to go next. Thanks for your input, Antelan talk 02:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I would recommend formal mediation. This is the normal step when content disputes can no longer reach concensus, especially if interpretation of guidelines or policies is pivotal to the dispute. While mediation does require consent from all parties, it can then escalate to RfC or arbitration when you show that failed. — Coren (talk) 02:47, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, sounds like I'll have to pursue that. One last question - the dispute is almost entirely, although with an exception from time to time, between two users. Are those exceptions always enough to exclude the possibility of getting a third opinion? I'm just hesitant to escalate this because I feel that it really could be handled at a level similar to third opinion. Antelan talk 02:51, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, because the point of TO is to act as a "tie breaker", if you will. Having other editors chime in, or weigh in, means that arguments about "more of US think X" remain alive and well, and experience has show that this then tends to degenerate into meat/sock puppet warring, canvassing and a war of numbers. At this point, what you need is someone to step in with some authority to settle the dispute, not simply one more voice to break a good faith dispute.
For what it's worth, and specifically not as a third opinion, I agree that "allopathic" is a loaded term used only to push a POV. I've never ever seen it used outside the circles of "alternative medicine". The problem is, the proponents of labeling real medicine with that term are doing so out of conviction and faith— that rarely is conductive to resolution simply by an external voice chiming in. — Coren (talk) 03:04, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Coren, I have new text for the Cornelis Slenters article, philosophy of science. Cannot find the tagged (copyvio) version anymore. I am a newbe, what do I do next. Thank you, UGD —The preceding unsigned comment was added by UGD (talkcontribs) 20:03:25, August 19, 2007 (UTC).

Your bot erroneously tagged Abascantus as copyvio. Both the Wikipedia article and whatever similar article it found out in the aether are merely reprinting public domain text. Both pages have templates indicating the transclusion of the information from the public domain Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, from 1867. Just a heads up. Tenney Fire Hall

[edit]

Your bot found a similarity between the Tenney Fire Hall and Tenney, Minnesota articles, which is understandable because I wrote the Tenney article and then copied a large portion of the text for the Tenney Fire Hall article. I hope there's no ethical issue here. I'll remove any tags on the Fire Hall article - please contact me if this is an incorrect course of action. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spottacus (talkcontribs) 02:33, August 20, 2007 (UTC).

My page was deleted for no reason

[edit]

I received this message:

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of BiA Empire, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://bia.myclanwebsite.com/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 17:00, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

The website biaempire.com, or bia.myclanwebsite.com is of my own creation. I wanted to put a wiki up for it, because we have well over 1,000 members and I thought using wiki would be a good reference point, for us, and for alot of other HALO 2 clans that are out there.

I am sure that well over 1,000 members of a community would like it if we had information about BiA. Also, the other major clans out there could add references of their oun clans as well. There are alot of XBOX and XBOX 360 owners out there that are always asking the information that I am trying to get out there. I will edit more info as I go along, but there is no copyright infringement.

If you need any proof of my ownership to either biaempire.com, or bia.myclanwebsite.com, feel free to let me know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BiA Ativan X1 (talkcontribs)

Hello, I seem to have fallen foul of using copyrighted material. I have done as suggested - removed some of it, rewritten some of it from scratch and found the same info from Wiki. Sorry about that. Rosser 21:04, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The bot seemed to have made an error in claiming a similarity to the website for the Oxford Lightweight Rowing Club. The facts are correct and the website was used as a source, but was not copied. I wrote it from my own knowledge as an OULRC member.

Confused bot

[edit]

Hello,

I've just received an automated message from your bot complaining the the text for The House of Bernarda Alba (play) is taken from another website. I've checked the site, and it gives a Wikipedia copyright notice at the bottom of the page - they have taken it from here. Perhaps this confusion has arisen because the text has been cut & pasted from the article's old page? Anyhow, it is legal and belongs here. Thanks,

DionysosProteus 20:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I notice too that the web address includes the term 'wiki':

http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/La_casa_de_Bernarda_Alba

Is there not a way to exclude pages from other sites with that term in their address, as many sites cut and paste from wikipedia while the copyright remains here.

DionysosProteus 20:30, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Red XN No change done to the bot: many wikis have non-GFDL licenses and a bot cannot guess that. — Coren (talk) 00:56, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, your bot is tagging stuff from http://shetlopedia.com/ as copyright violation. It is in fact, a wiki, which is copyright free. --MacRusgail 03:26, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking, it's GFDL'ed, not copyright free (which only applies to things that were put or lapsed into public domain). While such copies are allowed, they must be attributed and link back to the original article so that the requirements about preserving contribution history is met. — Coren (talk) 05:12, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ULY

[edit]

I copied the following from Uyghur_language#Writing_system into Uyghur Latin Yéziqi.

ULY: Between November 2000 and July 2001, five conferences were held at Xinjiang University in Ürümchi to introduce a unified Latin-Script Uyghur alphabet (Uyghur Latin Yéziqi̡ -- ULY).
The ULY project was covered by the official XUAR media and on the internet to inform the public of the effort. The media, in particular, was very careful not to send the wrong signal of an incipient writing reform. Nevertheless, even today some people still hesitate to use the term ULY since they fear its potential association with an attempt to reform the common script. Others think it is important to have one-to-one correspondence (or a norm) between Latin-Script Uyghur and Arabic-Script Uyghur.
Reference: ::http://www.uyghurdictionary.org/excerpts/An%20Introduction%20to%20LSU.pdf

I will try to paraphrase it but I thought "wt's good 4 th goose..." applied in taking text from 1 Wikipedia article to a closely related 1. Is the bot-edit or Uyghur language wrong perhaps? Thecurran 06:08, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That was fast. I've been notified by your bot that the article USOC Coach of the Year may be a copyright violation of the USOC's page on the same award, which is the (referenced) source for this article. I disagree. The content describing what the awards are and how they are selected has been rewritten, not copied. I cheerfully admit that the actual list of award winners was copied from the site, but, it's a list. There isn't any way to rewrite that sort of information. I'm removing the copyvio tag.
