UK Cities population
Surely this list List of largest United Kingdom settlements by population Is the corrsct list to use when stating population figures for UK Cities within Wikipedia, the list currently used List of English districts by population is ridiculous as it also includes counties and skews data for smaller cities such as Leeds and Sheffield as they include the metropolitan areas in their figures.
Clearly the wrong information, as Manchester and Liverpool are both approx twice as populous as Leeds or Sheffield.
Thanks

- I'm not really sure why you are telling me about this rather than any other editor. Perhaps the best thing to do is to post on the talk pages of the article(s) in question? Cordless Larry (talk) 13:49, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
The page is uneditable and you are specifically listed, please amend the uneditable page. thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.164.19 (talk) 15:10, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Where am I "specifically listed"? I don't know which page you want to be changed. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:17, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
You are listed in the discussion section of the Liverpool page as the editor responsible for changes. It is proper that Populations on UK City pages reflect the cities rather than the metropolitan areas or counties. If these pages were editable I would do it, they are not so I must request.
Thanks,

happy holidays from PPI
Thanks Cordless_Larry, for all your work assessing articles with WP:USPP over the past few months. I will have some results to report to the assessment team in January. The next semester should be pretty exciting there are over 25 university classes signed up with the project. Your input is helping to gauge how successful the project is, not just at improving the quality of public policy articles, but at incorporating Wikipedia as a teaching tool and recruiting and retaining college students as editors. we still need you in 2011, but it will mostly be assessments of student articles. Currently, there is another round of assessments to look at the improvements students made to their articles. If possible please assess by 5 January 2011; these results will be presented at an international conference later in January! Have a wonderful holiday season, all the best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 02:14, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
British People lists
I and other eds. have between us declined your proposed deletions. The material is actually in general very well sourced; the actual sources are one link away, in the indiv. articles. There are two opinions about proper actions in cases like this: one is to leave them alone, the other is to copy over a key source demonstrating the group identification. What does not seem to make sense is deleting sourced material because the source is not expressed explicitly on the same page. As far as I know the requirement is only for sourcing, not sourcing in any particular location. But if you want it in the same location it would do no harm--just fix it , if concerns you. I consider it adequate as it is, but if you feel differently, go to it. DGG ( talk ) 01:51, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I personally don't think the fact that the material might be sourced elsewhere on Wikipedia is enough, not least because to check whether such references exist would mean clicking on every item in sometimes very long lists. Far better to have the lists themselves sourced. Anyway, I respect the decision to decline deletion - I was mainly testing the water in any case. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:49, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- I've raised this issue on the BLP noticeboard. The replies so far indicate that this is a BLP issue and that the lists themselves should be sourced. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:07, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
List of Lebanese people in the United Kingdom
I have seen you reverted my reverts on this article. Many of these entries have sourced references stating Lebanese ancestry within in the article if you haven't checked. Therefore, those who have referenced sources will be readded to the list. If you have any questions, please ask, but will re-add those with valid references.--XLR8TION (talk) 11:52, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
- Please see the discussion here. It's not enough that there are sources in the individual articles. The entries in the list must be sourced there too. If the individual articles are sourced then it should be easy enough to copy these references over to the list. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:54, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
- Then I will do so as aI dadd them to the list. --XLR8TION (talk) 11:56, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Sunjeev Sahota
On 29 January 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Sunjeev Sahota, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that British author Sunjeev Sahota had not read a novel until he bought Midnight's Children in an airport at the age of 18? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Stumpjumper
Hi Larry, I modified the Stumpjumper page to clarify the "welded vs lugged" section. I see you changed it back, I should have told you why. Only the very earliest shipments of (Oct.81) Stumpjumpers had welded frames. The later (but still first year models) had lugged frames. This is discussed in the "25 years of Stumpjumper" book. Those earliest bikes are also documented at the MOMBAT website on the Specialized page. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MERK26 (talk • contribs) 20:15, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I probably should. Where's a good talk page to open one up? I feel I can just copy and paste what was said on the Wikiproject page because there's really nothing more to it. Bulldog123 10:51, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Am I the only one that's baffled by why people are starting to so vehemently oppose such an inconsequential and simple request? "Don't make your own images." Bulldog123 04:59, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
- I think some people are misunderstanding the rationale for the request, but perhaps the main problem is that we proposed a blanket ban. Hopefully something good can still come out of it, such as clear guidelines on appropriate criteria for selecting the images. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:40, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Kumar
Hi Larry. Sorry, my point about the "ridiculous title" referred to that unwieldly and very American construction, "William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Sociology" at the University of Virginia. I should have been more clear. We surely don't need to say "University Professor" (should be lower-case, in any case), as that is implied by the Wazza R. Kenan stuff. As an aside, I remember Prophesy and Progress very well as an undergraduate in the early 1980s, and I still have two copies, one my own, the other the library's that I carelessly forgot to return. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 11:14, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I see. I thought you were saying that "University Professor" was ridiculous. I don't think it should be in lower-case, though. The point isn't that he's a (generic) university professor, but that he tolds the title "University Professor". A similar title exists at the University of California (see here) and isn't held by all professors at the university. Kumar uses the title University Professor on his publications, such as this. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:19, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- Ah. In which case you are right. Another US-ism, so I'll revise what I said above, and say that "ridiculous" now covers both designations. I'll leave it to you whether or not it's reinstated, but personally I'd leave it out. It's no great potatoes either way. Ericoides (talk) 11:22, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- No, agreed. I might consider re-writing and expanding that first paragraph anyway. Incidentally, I've nominated the article at Template talk:Did you know so hopefully it should feature on the main page sometime soon. Thanks also for this kind comment. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:26, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

On 15 February 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Krishan Kumar, which you created or substantially expanded. English/British
The confusion is not unique to Americans, but - in my experience - they do it more consistently and thoroughly than anyone else. I am British but have lived in the US for 25 years. Have also lived in several other countries. It is one of my pet peeves and I have a mission to go through Wikipedia and change all references to English actors, politicians, etc - to British. We can keep changing and unchanging this entry, but is it worth it? I believe that my point was correct. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Juno2010 (talk • contribs) 21:35, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- The problem is that personal experience is not sufficient to add something to Wikipedia. As WP:Verifiability states: "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth; that is, whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true". Describing people as English versus British would seem a different point to me, unless you're claiming that all of the articles on Wikipedia about English people were written by Americans with no understanding of the difference between Britain and England. And in any case, it's surely not incorrect to state that someone is English if they are from England and identify as such? It's not the same as confusing England with Britain. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:47, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Sorry if I am not doing this message thing properly - I am relatively new to Wikipedia. I have no objection to using England and English when referring specifically to England and things English. My objection is with the way so many people - Americans in particular - misuse the term, as in "the English prime minister David Cameron" or a book with a chapter title "Politics in England" that actually deals with British politics. Problem is, it's impossible to verify. I am British, and was born in England, but have ancestors from Scotland. So what am I? I'm not Scottish, I could be called English, but I consider myself British. Right now I'm having a squabble with several people who keep describing the commentator Christopher Hitchens as English-American, when he was once a British citizen but is now an American citizen. He is British-American. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Juno2010 (talk • contribs) 22:01, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with you in the case of "English prime minister" - that's clearly incorrect. But it's not the same as "English actor" or "English politician". As for Hitchens, I think you might be confusing citizenship with national identity. Hitchens is a British citizen but if there are reliable sources describing him as English then so be it. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:08, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- In fact, the source being used at Christopher Hitchens indicates that he considers himself English, not British. That doesn't change his citizenship, but it does suggest that we should describe his identity as English. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:25, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Just to note that the best place for discussion of the Hitchens case is here. Cordless Larry (talk) 03:03, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

I've moved this comment from Wikipedia:Editor review/Cordless Larry since it doesn't form part of my editor review:
--Zrin22 (talk) 17:35, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, my German isn't good enough to understand all of that. I will reiterate what I said on your talk page: please don't post identical comments on multiple articles' talk pages. It's best to keep your comments short and to the point, making clear what changes you would like made, rather than simply discussing the topic in general. As far as I can tell, nothing in your comments actually specifies what you would like to be changed in the articles. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:49, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

I created the article a long time ago, but right now I agree this has very little useful info, so yeah it should probably be deleted (Which also goes for the embassy in Washington and Berlin), though the Moscow one should probably stay, as the building passes notability, I think. It was designed by a famous Russian architect, and named after him. Cheers! Yazan (talk) 08:45, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for your thoughts. I've proposed a bunch of these for deletion so we'll see how it goes. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:55, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- To be honest I'm actually not sure how these articles can even be expanded- there is only so much one can say about an embassy! I support the deletion of all these articles, but many will oppose because there is so many one-sentenced 'articles' on embassies e.g. Mexican Embassy, Berlin; French Embassy, Ottawa; Bulgarian Embassy, Chişinău; Embassy of the United Kingdom in Moscow... the list goes on and on.Turco85 (Talk) 21:08, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- I might try to organise a mass AfD discussion on these articles at some point, after waiting to see how the proposed deletions go. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:14, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Friendly suggestion
You may wish to consider using multiple colons to indent your comments at AfD discussions. Rather than asterisks. The latter break up the conversation unnaturally, which is I expect why the former is the choice by the vast majority of those commenting at AfDs. I think it would help people more easily follow your points, without being unnecessarily distracted by the asterisks to the left of them. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 02:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

New Assessment for article improvements with PPI
hi Cordless_Larry,
I feel so bad! Somehow I missed you when I updated the WP:USPP assessment page, I am sorry! If you are still interested we would love and appreciate your involvement. Another assessment round is posted. This round is the follow-up to the previous assessment, so it should reflect some big improvements to the articles. WP:USPP Post Assessment 2.1
There is a group of about 25 subject matter experts who are assessing, and last week I sent them a tutorial video on how to leave comments on talk pages. So if you see any newcomers on the discussion pages, please help me welcome them.
The assessment team is doing a really amazing job, in fact, here at WMF, we are using your ratings from last term as the “gold standard” to test the Article Feedback Tool and see how well it works. I will be presenting lots of research in the coming months. Thank You! Best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 21:27, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I'm not editing much at the moment so I'm not sure whether I'll be able to contribute this time around. I will try to help out if I find the time though. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:52, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks Cordless_Larry, if you get a chance check out the project. There has been A LOT of activity this term. best,ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 16:02, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

WP:USPP Spring Assessment 3
hi Cordless Larry,
Thanks for helping with assessment! There is a new assessment posted here. There are 25 articles in both this assessment and the next/final assessment. There was a huge amount of content that got added this term, hopefully the randomly selected articles will show it to be high quality. You should see some results form the assessments in the coming months. ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 19:41, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

PPI Assessment research in FastCompany
hi Cordless_Larry, I wanted to let you know that FactCompany.com reported the Public Policy Initiative research. They noticed all of our hard work on article quality assessment! And, I presented some preliminary results of the Public Policy Initiative today at the Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit; it was very well received by academics. They were impressed with the rigor of the research and that is due in large part to your efforts. So yet again, Thank YOU! I will keep you posted as I continue to get the results out there. Also, if you would like a token of appreciation (aka Wikipedia swag) send me an email (aroth@wikimedia.org) with your address and I will get a package out to you later this month. all the best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 02:01, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Hi Cordless_Larry,

Where have you gone?
You don't seem to be very active anymore. The article Somalis in the United Kingdom is in decline because no-one's keeping a tight grip on it. Christopher Connor (talk) 18:14, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
- I've not been editing much recently, partly because I've been busy but also out of a bit of a loss of interest. I'll try to take a look at that article at some point though and I might make a return to more regular editing at some point. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:34, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Answer
I removed the 250,000 figure from British somalis demographics because it looks like an inflated figure. Most sources tend to give figures between 90,000 and 125,000, so the 250,000 figure is unique and seems very implausible. For such unikely claims, only the highest quality sources or secondary sources will suffice. Pass a Method talk 09:29, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. Perhaps you could explain that in the edit summary next time you make such edits? Cordless Larry (talk) 09:39, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
The page have be vandalized a lot lately and he a public figure running for office so I was wondering so I was wonder if the page would be semi-protected until the elections are over. Deleting my input to Wikipedia
Dear Cordless Larry,
I have to say that I am new in Wikipedia and I found it very important for our Latin American community what I read in this article. I do not know if this has a owner, copyrights or something in particular that make you delete my input, what I had wrote. As I said, I am new on editing Wikipedia and, obviously looks like I did not do appropriated that article and as you stated looked like a "spam". Well, I have been living within the roots of my community and people know about a "television channel project". I hope that my concern have a good and appropriate replay of your behalf.
Thank you,
Amgox Television The Latino American Television Project — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMGOX TELEVISION (talk • contribs) 14:05, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- The reason I deleted it was because it was clearly written in a promotional rather than an encyclopedic style (e.g. "What a great opportunity to be able to show the true Latin identity as a venturesome, brilliant people, loaded with magic, as well as rich our own culture in a television channel", and "The programming will grow day by day: it will be enriched with their own ideas"). I recommend that you take a look at WP:NPOV before adding such material. Your user name also suggests that you have some association with the TV channel that you're writing about. If that's the case, you might also want to have a read of WP:COI. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:21, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Gaining permission for a photo
Hi
I've got an image of an individual I would like to upload onto their Wikipedia page and I have the email of the person who took the photograph.
What would I need to ask the photographer specifically?
Because the last time I asked for permission to upload a photo on Wikipedia, I was granted permission by the photographer but someone on Wikipedia emailed me and told me that wasn't the right kind of permission. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bazancourt (talk • contribs) 15:39, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

FYI
Hi Cordless Larry. An editor has added some undue and unrepresentative material to the Somalis in the United Kingdom article, which I've commented about here. He has also added some similar non-neutral soapboxing to the Black British page, some of which I've also removed. However, I still think you should give it a look when you have the chance (e.g. one section was re-titled Mass street conflicts with white racists and police forces). The edits seem to be a bit Afrocentric overall. Thought I'd contact you since I know you try and maintain the British-related articles. Cheers, Middayexpress (talk) 20:58, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Apologies, Middayexpress, I don't think I was actively editing Wikipedia when you posted this message. I probably saw it but was too tired of debates about that article to get involved. I'm slightly wary of doing so even now, but as you know I've engaged with the article again after a long break. Did the issue get resolved? Cordless Larry (talk) 14:58, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

British Nigerians
Thanks for you assistance Larry, it has been much appreciated. Given recent events, I think I will become a dedicated part time editor as general knowledge is my specialty. I think it makes sense to hold fire on the Education page for now as some of the resistance has nothing to do with the data and more to do with massaging the appearance of specific ethnic groups against others.
I will say I am a bit disappointed, as thought the editor management processes would stop this sort of thing from happening. Perhaps we should draw in others editors or try a new tack??
Anyway thanks for your input thus far. Nograviti (talk) 09:16, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Nograviti. Editing Wikipedia, and particularly articles of this nature, where people have very personal feelings about the subject, can be frustrating at times. I've only recently come back after a long break, which was partly the result of getting tired of endless debates such as this. I find it helpful to remember Wikipedia:There is no deadline. Yes, it's important to get incorrect or misleading data removed or clarified as soon as possible, but apart from that, giving it some time pays off and things settle to a consensus as more editors get involved. See Talk:British Cypriots as an example of that (admittedly where the other main contributor was making some pretty crazy arguments, which weren't hard to rebutt). Unfortunately not many editors seem willing to contribute to these ethnic group articles. A few people have chipped in on the Somali and Nigerian ones, but please do contribute further to them if you have the time and interest. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:46, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Your comments sent me on a trip down memory lane. I had to laugh at this, when the editor I clashed with over the British Cypriots article accused me of racism for daring as a non-Greek to contribute to articles about Greek people. The irony! Thankfully that editor was swiftly blocked. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:53, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm it is funny, but the issue is I don't see why users see such discussions in binary terms, that my group should be seen as the best or better than others. Often the facts on different ethnic groups have long historical reasons behind them. It doesn't mean one group is better than another. Look at Asia, if you had wikipedia in the 80s there would have been no comparison between China and Japan. But go forward 30 years and the picture changes entirely, everything is in flux and always changing. Today's leaders could become tomorrow's also rans..Nograviti (talk) 12:04, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- I can understand why some people act defensively about characterisations of groups that they are members of, particularly when those groups are subject to negative media coverage and outright racism (which Somalis undoubtedly are). However, it shouldn't spill over into censorship of material from verifiable and reliable sources. It's far better in my mind to use the data and to provide well-sourced explanations of it, for example so that readers can understand that there are very good reasons why Somalis fare relatively poorly in terms of education, than to suppress it. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:12, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Couldn't agree more, Boko Haram aside Nigeria isn't war torn and stands out as one of the few African countries where the colonial administration saw fit to create and use a small black middle class (Ditto Ghana). This wasn't the same in east Africa, where you often had divide and rule along with middle class imported from south Asia (Hence the Idi Amin expulsions). That probably explains the differences we are seeing and I agree one shouldn't be using WP to censor a particular group's shortcomings. I agree that Somalis are unfairly vilified, but the problem lays with the media not with Somalis in my opinion. In truth the UK is pretty good on such matters in Scandinavia outright racism towards Somalis is sadly commonplace Nograviti (talk) 12:19, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Larry, did you pay to access the documents you cited in the recent discussion on education in the Somali page? I tried to access the document and the site requested a fee?Nograviti (talk) 08:39, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry. I forgot about that. I have institutional access via a university library. I'm going to write some suggested text to add to the Somalis article based on the journal article later today, hopefully, so you could perhaps comment on that. I have tried to describe the approach taken by the article on the talk page, for the benefit of those without access. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:43, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- Please do and I will happily comment on that. I amazed at the level of detail you have to go to. But it is necessary to make sure the most accurate information goes up on WP. We should do the same for the British Nigerian page, even if the data in the new report is add odds with whats in the IPPR 2013 report (would be surprised if it is very different though).Nograviti (talk) 08:48, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- Nograviti, I've now proposed some text on the talk page. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:56, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

I appear to have become the subject of an attempt at off-Wikipedia harassment relating to a Wikipedia article. Does anyone know where the appropriate place to report this is? Cordless Larry (talk) 09:02, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Larry, I'm sorry to hear about that. There isn't a lot that Wikipedia can do, but if you think that someone with a Wikipedia account is involved you can report it, with evidence of the link to the functionaries or to the Arbitration Committee. Callanecc (talk • contribs • logs) 10:27, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

- I e-mailed the Arbitration Committee earlier. No response as of yet. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:39, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Should I expect a response, Callanecc? I don't expect the ARBCOM to be able to catch the editor who sent it, but it would be good to at least get an acknowledgement for my sanity and some advice on editing the article in future. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:28, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- You should get a response, if you don't in a few days post a note on WT:ArbCom reminding them about it. While I don't know anything about the circumstances, I'd suggest you be very careful in editing the article and consider avoiding it since there's not a lot which can be done to prevent it. It's not as if they've threatened violence or anything like that, but that the more I try to contribute to the article, the more editors they will recruit to oppose any edits I make or suggest, and also that they will try to set me up to look like I've been breaking Wikipedia rules somehow and get me blocked. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

- Fixed. I've no idea why I would have linked "alone". Cordless Larry (talk) 09:57, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
DYK for University of Rwanda
On 18 April 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article University of Rwanda, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the University of Rwanda was formed in 2013 through the merger of Rwanda's seven public institutions of higher education? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/University of Rwanda. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Image overcrowding
Greetings. I've seen that you've converted changes to the Bosnia and Herzegovina's article, by removing pictures which you suspect that's overcrowding. I believe it is not. It fits well, and I saw no complaints from others that it doesn't compile perfectly with the text. Any secure aspects of words which can misjudge my claim? KalyEV. (talk) 11:47, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi KalyEV.. I'm not sure I quite understand what you're asking. I removed some images in response to a discussion on the article's talk page. If you disagree with the removal of the images, that's the best place to say so. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:50, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
What I wanted to ask is that, what's the point of removing the pictures, it just fits well with the article and the text. I didn't know there was a discussion topic about it, thank you for noticing, I'll move my point of view there. KalyEV. (talk) 14:54, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
