Sports cards
A while back, I started looking at the gum cards to try to grab some photos of 1950s-1960s singers and vocal groups. The main gum companies in the US back then were Topps, Fleer and Bowman. All of them produced sports cards and both Topps and Fleer did music ones too.
- File:1939 Bowman Play Ball cards 1.JPG More Bowman-these early ones were never marked.
When I went to copyright.gov for renewal info on the ones that had a copyright mark, I found nothing for renewals on the pre-1964 cards from any of these companies. The only thing you have to watch is if you start dealing with the Topps non-sports cards for television shows. McHale's Navy comes to mind because they did some cards with photos from the show. There's two copyright notices on the McHale cards--one for Topps, which was not renewed, and one for the TV production company, which was. You can go up to and include 1963 cards re: years. Sounds like there's gonna be a lot of new hockey player pics around here! :) We hope (talk) 04:20, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- Poor old George Armstrong falls into the same category as Henri Richard right now, as far as cards for sale are concerned. The earliest Topps one is from 1964. :( But I'm wondering about the Canadian cards like Parkhurst which are available. There's no mark re: copyright on them and the photo would belong to either the Maple Leafs or Parkhurst Gum Company--both I think are corporations. Am wondering if they wouldn't meet the PD standard for Canada shown here. The card at the link is 62 years old. One of the best people at WP for all copyright questions is User talk:Stefan2. Am sure he'd know if older Parkhurst cards would be Canadian PD; it would be great news if that's so because there are a lot of Canadian hockey cards to be found.
- Will keep an eye for team photos. All of the sports teams sent tons of them to the newspapers, so what we need for US-PD is to find ones we can date as being before 1978. It's just a matter of someone having the news photos and putting them up for sale. We hope (talk) 17:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- Let's start with this one: photo When I enlarged the back, I was able to make out that this was a Detroit Free Press news photo (which makes sense as he was playing for the Red Wings at that time). The earliest date stamp is February 3, 1950 (photo was probably related to their Stanley Cup win). Was also able to make out some of the news clipping: the photo says it's a Free Press photo by Toby (can't read last name).
- I went to the UPenn books for 1977 and 1978 to check for Detroit Free Press renewals. The newspaper didn't renew any of their issues, so the photo is US PD-not renewed. :) We hope (talk) 20:23, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- BTW, the others in the photo are his wife and son, Leo, who was 2 at the time. We hope (talk) 20:25, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
The other two are copies (second generation photos) from a fan's scrapbook. We don't know who took them or whether they were ever published or seen outside of the scrapbook until they came onto eBay. Sorry, but because of that, we can't say they're PD. We hope (talk) 20:44, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- I was asked to comment here. One problem is that US and Canadian laws are different, and a card may often be copyrighted in one of the countries while being in the public domain in the other country. Neither country uses the rule of the shorter term on each other's cards.
- File:Clyde McPhatter 1960.JPG and File:Roy Hamilton 1957.JPG contain a copyright notice, but the copyright notice does not contain any year. Under s:Copyright Act of 1909 section 18, a year had to be included for printed literary, musical and dramatic works. Therefore, I would assume that the text on the cards is {{PD-US-no notice}} but that the images have a valid copyright notice. However, a card like this presumably had very little economical value 28 years after it was published, so User:We hope's discoveries about {{PD-US-not renewed}} sound very plausible.
- In Canada, the rules are different. In Canada, the terms are described at Copyright law of Canada#Public domain. Canada doesn't use the rule of the shorter term on US works (because of incompatibility with NAFTA I think), so the terms at Copyright law of Canada#Public domain also determine the copyright status of US cards in Canada, regardless of the copyright status in the United States. If the photograph was taken before 1949, then the copyright to the photograph expired in Canada 50 years after the photograph was taken. Photographs taken in 1949 or later enter the public domain 50 years after the death of the photographer, unless the photographer is anonymous in which case it is shortened to just 50 years from publication. The text on the back enters the public domain 50 years after the death of the person who wrote the text (shortened to 50 years from publication if this person is anonymous), regardless of when the text was written.
- If you discover a statement somewhere where someone identifies as the author of the text or the photographs, and this statement was made within 50 years from publication of the cards, then all may fail. Unless someone discovers that such a statement exists, I think that it is very plausible to assume anonymous authorship for all cards unless the name of the author is inscribed on the card itself.
- For Canadian photos within the United States, the rules are different to those of US cards. If:
- the author was a US citizen living in the United States (hard to prove for cards with anonymous authorship),
- the cards were published in the United States within 30 days after publication in Canada, or
- the copyright expired in Canada before 1996,
- then you can apply {{PD-US-not renewed}} and {{PD-US-no notice}} in the same way as for US cards. In other cases, URAA unfortunately has the effect that you have to treat the cards as "published with notice" and "copyright renewed" even if it wasn't, and in that case the cards normally enter the public domain in the United States 95 years after publication, regardless of whether they currently are in the publication in Canada or not.
- A table with some examples:
Card type | USA PD date, text | USA PD date, image | Canadian PD date | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
File:Clyde McPhatter 1960.JPG | 1960 | 1989 | 2011 | Assumes anonymous authorship for Canadian PD year. USA is different for text and image due to different notice requirements for text and images. Assumes that USA copyright wasn't renewed. |
File:1939 Bowman Play Ball cards 1.JPG | 1939 | 1939 | 1990 | If any photos were taken before 1939, then the Canadian PD year for those photos is earlier. |
Canadian card from 1940, no notice and no renewal | 1940 | 1940 | 1991 | Assumes photo taken in 1940, otherwise the Canadian PD year for image is earlier. Also assumes that the text author is anonymous. |
Canadian card from 1940, with notice but without renewal | 1969 | 1969 | 1991 | Assumes photo taken in 1940, otherwise the Canadian PD year for image is earlier. Also assumes that the text author is anonymous. |
Canadian card from 1940, with notice and renewal | 2036 | 2036 | 1991 | Assumes photo taken in 1940, otherwise the Canadian PD year for image is earlier. Also assumes that the text author is anonymous. |
Canadian card from 1950, no notice and no renewal, distributed in both USA and Canada | 1950 | 1950 | 2001 | Assumes anonymous authorship & photograph taken after 1948 & not previously published. |
Canadian card from 1950, with notice but without renewal, distributed in both USA and Canada | 1979 | 1979 | 2001 | Assumes anonymous authorship & photograph taken after 1948 & not previously published. |
Canadian card from 1950, with notice and renewal, distributed in both USA and Canada | 2046 | 2046 | 2001 | Assumes anonymous authorship & photograph taken after 1948 & not previously published. |
Canadian card from 1950, with or without notice and renewal, distributed in Canada only | 2046 | 2046 | 2001 | Assumes anonymous authorship & photograph taken after 1948 & not previously published. |
A renewal for a Canadian card means that the Canadian copyright holder submitted a renewal to the United States Copyright Office, and the renewal only affects the copyright status within the United States. It can probably be assumed that no Canadian cards were renewed, but the URAA problem makes lots of Canadian post-1945 cards copyrighted in the United States. Wikipedia only cares about USA's PD rules, so a card which is in the public domain in the United States but copyrighted in Canada counts as "free", whereas a card which is in the public domain in Canada but copyrighted in the United States counts as "unfree". This makes it harder for Canadians to use articles which contain card images. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:14, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Chex cards
I think you've found a winner here. :) Just did a little research and found out these cards were printed on Chex cereal boxes from 1963-1965. They don't have a mark on either side, so they should be fine as US-PD-no notice. Have seen cartoon character cutouts printed on various cereal boxes from the 1930s on and in their cases, the fronts were always marked--especially in the case of Disney characters. ;)
What I'd do is archive the message board link that talks about them being from Chex during those years (because they have no marking to show that's where they came from), and each of the eBay auction links that says this is one of the Chex cereal box cards. Would include info and links on the file description page when you upload. Wayback Machine now has an easy archive at Save Page Now, but you have to bookmark your links; this one doesn't send email notice as WebCite does/did.
While I was looking the other day, I did see some Coke "giveaway" cards. They're not marked or dated in any way. What I didn't find out is whether they were only Canadian or if they were also distributed in the US. They're from the 1960's-1970s and would be in the PD-US-no notice range if one could find out if they were ever given out in the US. I didn't take them because of that. Will go over Stefan2's info and table later, but wanted to let you know there's a good reason to like Chex. :-) We hope (talk) 14:35, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
New photos
OK, let's start with Emile Francis photos:
- No. The only mention of the date is done by the seller; I don't see any dates on the front or back.
- Yes. :) This was issued by the Rangers. You might want to talk a bit about the holograms from Sporting News on the backs of some of these. Have a look. They're to certify the photo is a genuine original and not a copy. After the DR, I always mention this if I have a sports photo with a hologram on it. ;)
- Yep. :) Again, issued by the Rangers and has a hologram.
- OK, with Template:PD-US-1978-89. I searched copyright.gov for St. Louis Blues by name and title. There were no results when I used name and for title, no sports-related items came up. (Mainly a lot of music.)
- No. Again, there's nothing on either side of the photo to give use an idea of when it was done--only what the seller says. What he's saying may be right, but we don't have anything "concrete" we can use to prove the date's right.
- You bet :) Issued by the Blues with a hologram.
Henri Richard:
I'd bookmark these but hold off on them until one of us is sure we understand the information Stefan2 provided. I don't believe York Peanut Butter is/was sold in the US, so these were probably Canada only. Would do the same with the two George Armstrong ones for the same reason.
- Dubious about this one, because while it has a 1973 date, there's no information re: who took the photo.
Hope this helps somewhat! We hope (talk) 02:40, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Feel free to nominate the article at DYK. Looks like it qualifies for February 2 in that regard. Not sure of your history at DYK, but I'll definitely have to do a quid pro quo review. I'd still like to create a playing style section that will summarize his play and his legacy (HHOF, number honoured, etc) as well as check out a couple books from my local library for extra personal life and to fill in some time gaps on his career before considering a GA run. Cheers! Resolute 03:12, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Looking good. How do co-noms work at DYK reviews-wise? I currently have two articles at DYK actually (J. L. Carpenter and Jim Gregory (ice hockey)) and am in the process of another review at the moment. I've only ever gone solo at DYK if I can remember correctly. As well, if you have any hook suggestions, let me know! I'll give it a readthrough and try to come up with something, though I find I lack creativity most of the times to come up with a decent hook. – Connormah (talk) 03:26, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- As well - should we include a coaching awards section for his Memorial Cup victories, or should they fit into the general awards section? Or is the mention in the prose sufficient? – Connormah (talk) 03:28, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- The DYK template has author and author2 parameters for multiple noms. As far as a hook goes, for me personally, his scoring the final goal of the Original Six era stands out as an interesting piece of history. And go ahead and add the Memorial Cups to the table. I was expanding it as I came across trophies he won. Resolute 03:42, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Funny, just ec'd with you suggesting the same hook you just proposed. I like it as well. I'll start up the nom. – Connormah (talk) 03:44, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Also FYI, there are some good quotes related to his legacy in the Meharg citation, including one from Marcel Pronovost... – Connormah (talk) 03:45, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

- Let me know when it's ready for GAN - I'll help out once it gets reviewed (though I suspect it'll be a while). – Connormah (talk) 07:30, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
George Armstrong photos
Sorry for the slow reply. Have been trying to get more photos on Commons, deal with some RL things that wouldn't wait and am now having issues with Firefox since the version 27 update. Every time I try to save a photo, it crashes. :( My Win 7 is up to date with everything including A/V. No issues with it unless you want to do something with a photo. Managed to think a bit more about the George Armstrong photos and believe you're right about who issued them. With that in mind, it would make sense that either NHL or the team distributed the photos to all relevant media outlets in North America at the same time, so they should be OK as US-pre-1978, no notice. Didn't forget about Stefan2's table-have bookmarked it and will go over it ASAP. We hope (talk) 15:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that you moved the references for her death from the intro to the body of the article. I don't object to this ~ in fact I prefer it ~ but I am wondering if you can point me to anywhere where this is indicated as preferred. While I understand that information in the introduction is not normally referenced, some editors understandably seem to take the view that with recent deaths this fact should be referenced in the intro. Your thoughts on this will be appreciated. Cheers, Afterwriting (talk) 16:29, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Axel Gabriel place of death
I have serious doubts about the reliability of the source you've provided. (Any author who thinks "Dutch" refers to the people of Denmark isn't very credible.) I have been scouring all Danish sources and they all just say "his family informed that he died peacefully in his sleep", no location mentioned. The AP article that all the English sources are based on all say "A daughter, Karin Moerch, announced the death but did not say where he died or give the cause of death." Or else some reduced version of that sentence. So I don't think it is public knowledge where he died. I'm guessing the author of the article you reference thinks Denmark = Copenhagen (and is populated by Dutch people). RenniePet (talk) 03:09, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- Never mind, I found the correct place of death. Strangely enough, the French sources were the clue I needed - they were accurate. RenniePet (talk) 03:57, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Hockey players photo question
Are you looking for only players from Canada or who played on Canadian teams? I've found a bunch more photos and Chex cereal cards for quite a few people and can start uploading them if you want. We hope (talk) 23:13, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

- OK--I have 2 more Maple Leafs--Kent Douglas and Al Stanley--to go and that's what we can get for the team at the moment. Found something interesting while working on these. The photos were also printed on bags of Purina pet food (Dog and Cat Chow) at the same time they were on the cereal boxes. The ones from the bag weren't as sturdy as the cereal box ones with their cardboard backs, but there were some very HQ scans from someone who was selling the non-cardboard backed ones. If you look at the one for Red Kelly, you can see every freckle on his face. :)

- File:Frank Mahovlich - Toronto Maple Leafs - LAC E002505650.jpg Needs help. When I try accessing the info through the template link, I'm told that the server can't be accessed. Went to LAC main page looking for Frank Mahovlich and got this as a permanent link to the photo/information page. According to the non free file writeup, the file was uploaded in 2008 and was PD-Canada in January 2009. The photo information page also says there are no restrictions on its use. So we don't lose it, the file needs to be re-furred as a free file and re-licensed as PD-Canada. I've never licensed one, so would you mind? Will get the Leafs finished and then start on other Chex teams. We hope (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- OK, the Leafs are done. I think what's afoot with the files you mentioned is that the US won't recognize the URAA 50 year rule. Many of the hockey photos I saw there are from a magazine which looks to have been distributed in Canada only. Let me see what else I can get done with the rest tonight. Having said that, I'm sure that we could squeeze in two or three without losing the few images that need to stay. I'll leave it to you Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:12, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Help regarding revert
Hello, I'm a newbie editor. I mean learning new things. I've added uncategorised tag to the article George Knowling. I got an email that you reverted that. Is it the process that adding a category to an uncategorised article sends and notification that my edit has been reverted or I've placed that tag wrongly. Please let me know so that I can rectify myself further.--Jnanaranjan Sahu (ଜ୍ଞାନ) talk 06:11, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Jnanaranjan sahu, my apologies for the confusion— I had actually hit the "undo" button to bring up the edit window to add some basic categories, so that's I believe why you're getting the notification. The tag was fine. – Connormah (talk) 06:16, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thank You. I thought I made some mistake. Let me ask you another thing. Is welcoming a lot of people not a good idea or am I doing any mistake by welcoming a lot of people ? I'm feeling happy when new users ask me for help and I hep them. I got some problem due to my internet connection causing some overwrite and warned by a user Multiple welcome messages. Please tell me if I'm doing something or I'm on the right path.As you are an expert and experienced your suggestion values a lot for me. Hope I'm not wasting your valuable time.--Jnanaranjan Sahu (ଜ୍ଞାନ) talk 07:05, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Would you be so kind as to watch Triple Gold Club? There's an IP editor trying to take ownership of the article and apply their own POV to it. They are currently blocked, but their attitude on their user talk page indicates that once the 31 hours are up, they will be right back at it. I'm involved so can't take any action from an administrative standpoint. Need some uninvolved admins to watch it. Thanks! Resolute 19:02, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Lose the attitude. You've blocked one innocent GF newbie for this already. I do not appreciate your sarcastic tone one bit. "so look for refs?" might carry a bit more weight if you weren't adding that to an article where I'd already just added those missing sources to it. Of course there are sources – it's a slack news day. They still don't add up to a story that's more than a local footnote and is nowhere near world-encyclopedic, hence the prod. If you have a rational opposition to that PROD, I trust that you know the process for objecting to it. Hint: it's not whining in an edit summary. Andy Dingley (talk) 02:57, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, but "a quick Google News search brings up multiple hits", so that obviously meets WP:N. Andy Dingley (talk) 03:02, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- How ironic that you come here demanding that I "lose the attitude" when you seem to have a bone to pick with me and come to my talk page demanding I "lose the sarcastic tone" and stop "whining in an edit summary". Connormah (talk) 03:23, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- (not sure why this didn't come through) I immediately realized it was a bad block, and reverted myself because of that. I had originally though the article was petty vandalism that I seem to see much too often, but when I conducted a search, I saw there there is the topic obviously exists. I just felt that an AfD would be more suitable to garner more opinions on whether the topic is notable. Your snarky comments at the AfD are not appreciated and I will not be involving myself in this matter any further. Connormah (talk) 03:26, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Sprague Cleghorn
It's probably a good thing you write about politics rather than participate in it. What a time sink... Anyway, my thoughts on Cleghorn:
- Lead: I like to split up the teams by league and list them in chronological order. So say that he played for the Renfrew Hockey Club and Montreal Wanderers of the National Hockey Association and the Ottawa Senators, Toronto St. Patricks, Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. Mention his three Stanley Cups. Also, you note that he was known for dirty play, but really leave the reader hanging. Expand on that a little. You could complete that statement by noting how many times he was charged with assault for on-ice incidents.
- As a rule, I dislike statements like "...and would play on...". It's basically putting future tense on a statement from the past. "...played on..." is more succinct.
- Define abbreviations on first use - "National Hockey Association (NHA)", etc. I actually include the (NHA), (NHL), etc. in both the first use in the lead and the body.
- Avoid in-universe terms like "on the backend" wherever possible. It would confuse readers not already familiar with the sport.
- Repetition in the Early career section... "He would...", "He would...", "He would...". Mix it up a little.
- Does ref 10 support the entire story of the league's first attempt at moving him to Hamilton?
- "...Canadiens would see him score..." - I remember exactly how this was pointed out to me the first time: a season does not have eyes. It can't see anything. ;)
- Piece about his coaching the Maroons requires a source.
A little work, but you're on your way! I'll have to consult a couple sources for the playing style section, then you can send it to GAN. Hopefully I can get to that by the weekend. Cheers! Resolute 01:42, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Resolute! Looks like the usual bad habits of mine. I'll look into doing some copyediting. As for ref 10, it does not support it, but this seems to get the job done. Will add. Thanks for your comments! And yeah, Wikidrama is seldom ever fulfilling in my view... Connormah (talk) 02:45, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Believe I've addressed most of the things above (exception is the lead which I'll look at in the next few days). As for Maroons coaching part, I found a ref for his hiring, but do you have any general sources for the season and playoffs results? Connormah (talk) 05:52, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Added the playing style section - including a neat entry I found buried in a book that claims Sprague's play was the reason the Lady Byng Trophy was created! I'll have to search again for that coaching citation though. Other than that, there's a reference still needed on his being a fictionalized character in that book (if that's even important...), and the expansion of the lead. I'll do a polishing copyedit, probably tomorrow, after which you can take it to GAN. Resolute 02:12, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Much appreciated. I went ahead and removed the book reference as there is really no cites that I could find for it. I'll see if I can come up with anything for the lead. May look at images as well, I'm guessing we can use an image of him with the Canadiens (the one that's used everywhere) and move the Renfrew image down to the early career section. The Byng bit should make a good DYK hook if this gets to GA! Thanks again! Connormah (talk) 02:20, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- @Resolute - think it may be worth including in the playing style section that he's considered to one of the first offensive d-men in the NHL? [2] Connormah (talk) 19:42, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Done. I rewrote the lead as well and did a second copy edit. If you like, give it a once-over to ensure we've got our consistency and continuity down, and then I think it's ready for GAN. Resolute 20:31, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- Awesome, thanks. Will look over it again later today and eventually nom it. Connormah (talk) 21:38, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Untimely block
So you blocked User:Moatassemakmal in the middle of my discussion with him. There was really no need to do that - I wasn't going to let him get away with anything, but sometimes when one has the time and inclination it's interesting and useful to see what information one can glean from such people. —SMALLJIM 16:10, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Smalljim - please see User_talk:117Avenue#The_Canadian_MP_date_changer_is_back as well as the multiple reverts on each page each spanning the past few months, under IP addresses. The user was also warned and blocked previously, but continued to persist. Unfortunately I'd hoped it didn't have to come to this again, as I had AGFed and went for a temp. block initially, but I feel this is necessary now to stop the disruption. Connormah (talk) 16:14, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- Yes I was aware of the history, but I don't see what the urgency was considering that I was already dealing with the matter. Anyway ... the end result is the same and I (we?) have learned a little more about his motivation. Do you think craigmarlatt.com should be blacklisted? See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALinkSearch&target=www.craigmarlatt.com —SMALLJIM 16:24, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Smalljim: No strong feelings either way on the link, but I wouldn't be opposed to it. It also seems that the user gained autoconfirmed status and was editing through the protection of the articles that they've hit, which is why I felt the block was necessary. Connormah (talk) 16:35, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- Oh I'm not disagreeing that an indef block was needed, for several reasons, and I'd have issued one shortly. I have no doubt that he'll reappear too - blacklisting the site would force him to change his modus operandi, but perhaps he'll be easier to spot if we don't. Anyway, you obviously have everything watchlisted so I'll leave him to you - good luck! —SMALLJIM 16:58, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I finally got around to looking at Jim Gregory (ice hockey) I gave it a little copy editing, but I really couldn't find more information, not a surprise I don't really have access to older print media or hockey related books. Feel free to revert any of my changes I'm not the best with prose. I think it might be beneficial to explain the line "and developing a relationship with his favourite player, Ted Kennedy." the entire sentence probably needs to be broken up so if you could explain that line more in depth as its own sentence it might work better. Thanks for trying to put the captain and copilot back in. Somehow it was erased twice with no explanation. Hopefully it was just a botched edit conflict resolution by newbies. I've put it in the Crew and Passengers section. -- Fuzheado | Talk 05:20, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Help with Chuck Yeager article
I found your name on the Military History project page. Trying to clarify whether Chuck Yeager ever got promoted to Maj Gen (ret) in 2005 or at any other time. There are a number of news reports that describe him in passing as a retired Major General, but they could have gotten that info from old versions of Wikipedia. I've found where Congress authorized the president to promote him to Maj Gen (Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005, 108th Congress [3]), but I don't know whether the president/military command ever actually made the promotion. I'm assuming that if he had, there would be a press release or statement from the president's office somewhere. Dezastru (talk) 21:33, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Age with Month and Year Template?
Hey Connormah. I seem to remember you using a template that displays an age for individuals whose year and month of birth are known, but not their exact day, but I cannot seem to find it. Does such a thing exist, or did I just make it up? Canadian Paul 07:17, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Stale?
Hello. Since when does "stale" apply to usernames? Names of famous people are not allowed on Wikipedia.Hoops gza (talk) 00:15, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, please see the heading at UAA which states "Do not report a username unless it has been used in the last 2-3 weeks. Older accounts are likely abandoned and reports of such users will be summarily declined". No use, in my opinion in blocking these. Connormah (talk) 00:17, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
My fault, must have missed Rule 7. I think that rule is rather foolhardy, but whatever.Hoops gza (talk) 00:18, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
What about accounts with no logs? I found another one like the NeilYoung one that you blocked, BobDylan, and reported it.Hoops gza (talk) 00:32, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
OK... some of these are quite egregious though. What exactly is the deal with accounts where I cannot see any logs at all? These seem to always be blocked, and indeed many of the accounts that I have listed have no viewable logs.Hoops gza (talk) 02:53, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- Not quite sure what you're referring to as to "no logs at all" - could you elaborate? Connormah (talk) 02:55, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- As for the Young one, I'll admit that I hastily blocked that one, but I feel that that one along with mostly all of the others would not become a problem in the forseeable future... Connormah (talk) 02:56, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
When I check the logs on some of these accounts, the page of public logs is completely empty, including the lack of an account creation log (which is the one that I would always expect to see).Hoops gza (talk) 02:59, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm trying to abstain from stale reports. BTW, you have not answered my question about not seeing an account creation log on many accounts. Hoops gza (talk) 22:22, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- I actually have no idea, unless the accounts don't exist (how'd you come about them?). May want to ask at WP:VPT or something. Connormah (talk) 22:24, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Well, I just tried some different username combinations that I thought might be a account like this: Special:Contributions/Username. It's a little bit like creating different redirects to the same article. Hoops gza (talk) 22:30, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
City of Vancouver Archives on Flickr
This is their hockey album. What I've seen of it is licensed to share with attribution and doesn't bar commercial use. Thought there might be something in there for the hockey project. There's some great old team photos in the album. We hope (talk) 20:55, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Good quality set, indeed. Of note though, The Vancouver Archives' license claim is invalid. Those are all 1930s images so are PD-Canada, and will be PD-US as well given their copyright expired prior to the URAA date. It makes no effective difference though, because the Vancouver City Archive would be credited in either case if any of those players are notable. Resolute 23:32, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Please stop removing the incomplete birth name. I am well aware that "usually" the full name is included. In this case - and in many other cases - we do not know it. It is still more helpful to readers to include the almost full name in the infobox, rather than to exclude it, and I am not aware of any consensus at Template talk:Infobox person that that should not be done - though I am aware of your personal opinion, which differs from mine. Frank Sheppard
Hi Connormah. I'm wondering about Sheppard's whereabouts. I noticed that when you edited Frank Sheppard, you added his death date to the webpage, "after 1992". Can you add some clarity to his story in 1992? I can't find any information of Sheppard in 1992. Thanks Marc87 (talk) 22:35, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hey @Marc87: I'm currently working with a team of SIHR people on tracking Frank Shepard down. I got the "after 1992" from one of his sons' obituary in August 1992 as it stated that at the time he was survived by his father, Frank. We're trying to get a hold of his son to hopefully get our answer of when he died. Connormah (talk) 22:41, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

- Hi - we actually do not indefinitely block IPs as they can sometimes change. I have blocked for a longer duration than the past few blocks, and pretty much if they come back again, we can block for a longer period of time. Connormah (talk) 22:43, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
A user you blocked
Hey, I could easily be wrong, but should users such as this have their pages deleted? I have noticed other pages similar to this for other living people, and I would have thought it to be best for the pages to be entirely deleted regardless of history because of how obvious it is that this user will never be unblocked. Dustin (talk) 21:27, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm also unsure but perhaps the userpage was kept just for the purpose of tagging the account as a sock? Connormah (talk) 15:15, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Joseph Needham (politician), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bromhall (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Orphaned non-free image File:Kingston Frontenacs Logo.svg
Thanks for uploading File:Kingston Frontenacs Logo.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Non-free rationale for File:ConcordiaUTexas.svg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:ConcordiaUTexas.svg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. For the record
Just so you know, my revert at the Kenan Thompson article was related to the edit summary given by the IP editor ("redundant"). The IPs reasoning was to remove the name because it was redundant to have the name in the body the infobox as it was at the title/top of the infobox - that indicated to me there is a lack of understanding regarding infoboxes. I reverted only because having the name in the infobox twice (title and body) is SOP, hence, my edit summary comment. So, yes, it is how infoboxes work. Ultimately, your revert was correct because the line is used for birth name, not stage or common name. Bottom line: your "schooling" comment to me was unnecessary as well as unnecessarily harsh; the rest of your edit summary is accurate, more appropriate, and to the point of why the name should be left out. -- Winkelvi ● ✉ ✓ 21:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Stale UAA reports?
Not quite sure a UAA report can be "stale". Vandalism reports at AIV, sure. But usernames at UAA are either against policy or acceptable. I'm confused as to why you marked several requests as "stale". Rjd0060 (talk) 04:52, 9 August 2014 (UTC) I see there's a template for this...that doesn't help explain the point of it though. What's your rationale, personally? Rjd0060 (talk) 04:54, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi - if I recall correctly the guidelines state that the accounts reported should be used within the last few weeks or months. Most of the accounts I marked stale have either a)never edited or don't exist or b) are several years or months old. Connormah (talk) 04:59, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not talking about the guidelines...I'm more in to the common sense angle. ;-) So if a user had a username like "Stupidprick" you would not block it? Rjd0060 (talk) 17:32, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, but honestly most of those names reported, as User:Bongwarrior put it, are borderline, not obvious violations. It's as if this user is searching for a certain string on Special:ListUsers just for the purpose of reporting them, which honestly clutters up the noticeboard. Connormah (talk) 20:30, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Your edit to William Sutherland (N.W.T. politician)
Hi. I noticed that you made an edit to William Sutherland (N.W.T. politician). In it, you set the infobox's death date as the 30th, but the first sentence as the 13th. Which is correct? --Krenair (talk • contribs) 13:14, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
