I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

Getting the articles just right can be tricky - but there are lots of people to ask!

If you have any questions, just click on the Contact Me link after my signature at the end of this section. Alternatively, check out Wikipedia:Questions, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question.

By the way, when you are writing on a discussion page (or someone's talk page), it is considered good manners to sign your comment... to do this, just add ~~~~ at the end of your comment. That will put your user name (Coinmanj) and the date/time at the end (or you can click on the icon when you are editing. Never sign on an article page - only on a discussion page.

I am now going to add my signature, using ~~~~: -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 19:26, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Precisely which phrases in the above page, do you feel I copied from elsewhere? It may be in a style I have long ago forsaken at Wikipedia, but you clearly known enough to accuse me of copyright violation - where is it?  Giacomo  07:19, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

--The way it was written, lack of professional tone, the fact there aren't any real references. So either it's "original research" (which is also not allowed), you copy/pasted it from any number of non-listed sources or you tried to put things in your own words but failed to remove personal tone and views. And if you knew it was written poorly by you then you should have the desire and obligation to fix it. I was just pointing out that it might have been. You say it isn't copy/pasted and I have no reason to not believe you. Coinmanj (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you are such a brilliant, opinionated and architecturally knowledgable detective and beleive it to be poorly written, I suggest you research and re-write it, rather than insult those who have already worked on it. When it was written, it met all standards. You have not one scrap of evidence for suggesting it was copyvio - not one single scrap. You want it fixed - then fix it or at least learn to know what you are talking about. In future, it would be a good idea if you learned a little of a subject before templating the work of people who have been succesfully writing here for a great deal longer than you.  Giacomo  23:23, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

-- I never claimed to be anything and I haven't made a single comment about the architectural correctness of the thing, although I am an architectural drafter. You're acting as though I have some grudge against you or have attacked you personally, both of which are wrong. You haven't a clue how long I've been here other than this particular screen name. I already said that I believe you that you didn't copy/paste it but since you were the one who (by your own admission) wrote it then you should fix it or at least give some references, it shouldn't be that hard. Either way I'm done with this little convo since you can't remove personal feelings and are acting rather childlike. Coinmanj (talk) 00:56, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • To call someone a thief (which is exactly describes one who claims the credit for the work of others) is a personal attack. So think on that before running around pages and plastering them with templates. Neither is defending the honesty one's name from such unfounded allegations a childlike action. In future, please consider your ill conceived actions when indulging your love of templates.  Giacomo  06:53, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Primary vs. secondary sources

[edit]

Thank you for your efforts to improve the article on Archicebus. I realize that the template {{Primary source}} points out that using only primary sources can imply original research (WP:OR). However, I feel that your assertion that the article *requires* news sources is misguided. The idea behind WP:OR is that you don't want someone writing something up in a primary source in order to push their original research/idea. The case at hand is not the same as someone writing a history book with their take on events. These are scientifically observed details, written up by a team of paleoanthropologists and published in a high prestigious peer-reviewed journal. Moreover, these secondary sources are less reliable than the primary sources. Science writers for the press are notoriously deficient in their ability to research, grasp, and explain advanced scientific material. Almost every time I read a piece about primates on either the BBC, CNN, etc., I usually have to write in and complain about the mistakes... which usually results in corrections. In this case—miraculously—there were relatively few errors in the articles I had read. (I have not read the news stories in all of your sources yet.) I think the press may have finally learned to do a bit more homework after the Darwinius debacle from a few years ago. Talk about a case where your reliance on secondary sources would have fallen flat on its face...

Regardless, these secondary sources do not trump the primary source. In fact, the citations you added were superfluous, particularly in the lead since the lead only summarizes the body and citations are only needed there when quoting contentious material (WP:LEAD). I do plan to use more news sources when I get around to revamping the article further, but they are only needed for the analogies they make and the claims the researchers made during interviews that may not have been in the original paper. Otherwise I would never direct someone to a science news article if I wanted them to "get the facts". If you want secondary sources for this kind of academic material, you have to wait 5–10 years for a new textbook. I also consider future journal articles that make reference to the original to be secondary sources, assuming they simply reaffirm what the original claims. – Maky « talk » 04:49, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your view on the matter. The fact is, there is no consensus on when or how to use the PS template and my philosophy as an editor is to use as many non-primary sources as I can so long as the facts I'm citing, and the sources, fall in line with the science itself. There is nothing wrong or odd about having news sources in any article or in the lead, especially when information in the lead isn't necessarily listed elsewhere in the article. This subject is not obscure or highly technical and so the need to wait (a week, or year or decade) for additional academic material is pointless. There is a wide range of citing protocols, from citing every statement and fact to citing only primary details, quotes or contentious materials. The sources I added did not distract from the article and were, in my judgement, justified. In the end, you don't control the article. Coinmanj (talk) 03:50, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I do not control the article. However, I may take it to FAC someday, and for that reason, I try to address the points that will be brought up there beforehand. Yes there are many opinions on Wikipedia about key guidelines, but not all of them fly at FAC. – Maky « talk » 22:12, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Which is fine but as the article stood (and still stands) I really do think the citations are warranted. BTW, I really didn't mean to come off as a jerk, the word "superfluous" just ticked me off a bit because I do try only make necessary and quality edits. Coinmanj (talk) 15:11, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize. I did not mean "superfluous" in a negative way. *To me*, citations in the lead are mostly superfluous. Unfortunately, the lack of standards creates situations where editors cannot resolve conflicts of opinion on such issues. It ultimately becomes either an edit war, or the last editor of the article wins by default. I would rather see standards so we don't have to fight over such issues. FAC more-or-less creates some "standards", so I tend to work off my experiences from there, whether I agree with their judgement or not. – Maky « talk » 00:15, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TemplateData is here

[edit]

Hey Coinmanj

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

NPOV inquiry

[edit]

You are displaying a userbox that says "Concerned about Human Rights in North Korea." Can you clarify the nature and level of your concern? For instance, what are you concerned about? Do you belong to groups or organizations advancing such a concern? What actions have you taken with respect to the concern? BlueSalix (talk) 06:50, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm perfectly willing to work with you on Wikipedia business, however I must admit that personally I do not wish to engage with you on anything beyond what is required. Thank you. Coinmanj (talk) 07:03, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You, I believe exclusively, authored an entry to Wikipedia titled North Korea's cult of personality. Does that entry demonstrate your best, good-faith effort of WP:OPPONENT as a self-identified anti-DPRK activist? BlueSalix (talk) 08:49, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wiki policy is not that anyone with a particular interest or passion should avoid editing (or authoring) articles related to their interests. If the information I have provided is POV, prove it. For the last time, I did not "invent" the cult of personality or its title, it is a well known and thoroughly established fact which has been the subject of a great deal of research, published works, journalism etc. I have no opposition to any additions which may come form a different side/opposing views, if you find any sources that say no cult exists please add them. The only real opposition to any "cult" I have come across has been form the DPRK government itself which says that there is no cult but genuine hero worship (a view mentioned more than once in the article). I am not an authority on anything, I am learned, but not an authority. If you have any evidence then please add it to the article. I am not obliged to answer any question(s) on my talk page. You are a single editor, who (as far as I know) has not made any large contributions to this site, has not been here very long, and generally fails to understand a number of policy points. I will work with you on the article on the article's talk page, if you refuse or continually obstruct (as you have with the "costs" section) I will continue to ask for help from the Wikipedia Community (something encouraged by policy) in resolving the disputes (as has been suggested by other users - which you seem not to be able to understand). I have been as civil with you as I can be and I wish to spend as little time replying to your nonsense (your multiple accusations of my misconduct on the article talk page) as possible. Coinmanj (talk) 09:13, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't claim you couldn't edit North Korea's cult of personality. I asked a simple question: does that entry demonstrate your best, good-faith effort of WP:OPPONENT as a self-identified anti-DPRK activist? I'm asking that as I would simply like to know your opinion as to whether someone needs to start working on WP:OPPONENT oriented content to improve the entry. I'm just trying to have a conversation with you, it's not necessary to belittle and threaten me for asking a question. Thank you. BlueSalix (talk) 18:39, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am not, nor ever have been an "anti-DPRK activist". Requesting an RfC is not a threat, it is how disputes are resolved when the editors involved in a dispute fail to reach an agreement on their own. Coinmanj (talk) 23:34, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well I asked what "Concerned about Human Rights in North Korea." on your page meant and you shouted at me you would never answer. So I don't know what else that would mean other than you're an anti-DPRK activist. You're welcome to clarify if it's not but you have appeared steadfast in your resolve not to do that. BlueSalix (talk) 04:49, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because I don't have to. I'm a human being, and most humans are concerned about the welfare of other humans. It's kind of basic and no level headed person could misconstrue an concern over human rights with being an activist against an entire country. This will be the last reply I give to anything you ask me on this page as I have made it known I do not wish to associate with you, at all, beyond the article (and even there I'm not required to reply, discuss, or make any changes). Coinmanj (talk) 05:08, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article MarBEF Data System has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Noi reliable 3rd party references to indicate that the MarBEF project was notable. The majority of the article content relates to the European Register of Marine Species, which may itself be an appropriate subject for an article, but is not directly relevant to a MarBEF article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I came across the song randomly and saw that it was an orphaned article, so I went to the KFA page to add it so I could remove to orphan tag. But, I really see no reason to keep the song article - it's just an anthem for a relatively small organization. It has no notability beyond that and I couldn't find anything outside of KFA sources that even mentions the song. Coinmanj (talk) 03:56, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (1 April 2014)

[edit]

The following is an interesting article on the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 tragedy with regards to its possible connection to Diego Garcia, the British island with a US military presence in the Indian Ocean (see http://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussion.cgi?disc=149495;article=149821 with an access date of 1 April 2014):

APFN BLOCKBUSTER: PHILIP WOOD DIALED OUT OF DIEGO GARCIA Sun Mar 30, 2014 17:34 68.3.104.237

BLOCKBUSTER: THIS IS ACCURATE AND NOW 100 PERCENT CONFIRMED: HIJACKED IBM ENGINEER PHILIP WOOD SUCCESSFULLY DIALED OUT OF DIEGO GARCIA

The story below is NOW CONFIRMED 100 PERCENT TRUE AND I AM STICKING BY IT. ALL THE DEBUNK ATTEMPTS ARE THIN AT BEST. I AM NOT GOING TO LET THIS ENGINEER SIT THERE AND BE DRUGGED ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE PEOPLE JUST BECAUSE A FEW SHILLS TRIED TO RIP THIS. DEBUNK ATTEMPTS ALL ANSWERED BELOW ORIGINAL POST AND ORIGINAL SOURCE EXPLAINED AND LINKED. ORIGINAL POST: The blindfold:

Philip claimed to be blindfolded when he sent the message. When the American military blindfolds someone, it is accomplished by putting a bag over the head that is locked so you can't get it off. This left the engineers hands free. This would have made it possible for him to pull his Iphone 5 (a fact confirmed by the Exif data) out of his butt as stated, and use the voice command ability of the Iphone to just talk to it to log in and post the message. This explains why he sent a black photo, he could not see what he was sending, he just knew he snapped a photo and sent whatever got taken.

The coordinates:When the coordinates are added to the fact that the photo's exif data does not match the Google coordinates or any other coordinates for Diego Garcia that are posted online, but is still within the boundaries of Diego Garcia, it proves that no one just pulled those coordinates off the web. It helps confirm that this was not just a hoax because the coordinates are exact to wherever on Diego Garcia the Iphone was when it took the photo.

Rendition flight refuelling admission[edit] Actual Exif data below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Garcia Rendition flight refuelling admission[edit]

Diego Garcia is rumoured to have been one of the locations of the CIA's black sites.[62] Several groups claim that the military base on Diego Garcia has been used by the United States government for transport of prisoners involved in the controversial extraordinary rendition program, an allegation formally reported to the Council of Europe in June 2007.[63] On February 21, 2008, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband admitted that two United States extraordinary rendition flights refuelled on Diego Garcia in 2002. No reference was made to whether prisoners were on board the aircraft at the time.[64] Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is one of the "high-value detainees" suspected to have been held in Diego Garcia.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:30, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Kodi

[edit]

Hello. As for your edits on Kodi, I would like to point out that it is actually 1 April in a large part of the world. Whenever a domain like kodi.tv claims to be "seized" by some authority on 1 April, I would seriously wait for a reliable source to confirm the seizure before stating it as a fact in an article.—J. M. (talk) 02:32, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That completely slipped my mind. There were several RS that dealt with other legal issues (though not the seizure), so I figured it was likely the site had been seized.Coinmanj (talk) 02:58, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Select Survey Invite

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take no more than 1-2 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 16:12, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
