Notifying users at the GOCE Requests page
It may interest you to have a look at this page. I'm not sure how often users are notified when their requests are completed, so I decided to create a template for that purpose. What do you think? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 20:26, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Dragon Quest and Warrior
I know its asking for a bit much as its beyond the normal scope of copyediting, but could you help with clarrifying the naming issue for the article. As I mentioned, going to WP:VG is unlikely to prove useful. As an alternative, if you know of another quality series article with a similar issue, please point me in that direction.陣内Jinnai 01:45, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Splitting the Guild
A proposal to split the Guild has been brought up here. If this proposal were to go through, one part of the Guild would contain members who work on the copyedit backlog, and the other part would contain members who work on higher quality articles (GA, FA) as well as the copyedit backlog. Please see the talk page thread (link above) for more details. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 18:35, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
- A list of proposals has been posted regarding this matter, and your input is requested. Thanks. --Dianna (talk) 16:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
Vikings
I agree with you Chaosdruid and with your more objecitv interpretation. Something has to be written about the Vikings because they had an important role. Your changes are similar and I can agree with them. I believe that others will agree with you ... SeikoEn noted that Vikings should be mentioned in any case because in several ways they are essential for early formation of Ukrainians, and I agree with that. I do not support completly deleting the section about the Vikings as some of users would like to do ... Sources must remain present because they are reliable! I put forward some new proposals on the site for discussion ...--Vitaly N. (talk) 12:48, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Antlers Hotel (Kingsland, Texas)
Text alleged to be "plagerized" was in fact text written by me personally and used in both articles. It was not plagerized. Austex • Talk 23:03, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
- Though you may have written both I still do not have any proof that you did, and I could hardly have know that when I hid the text, as there is no OTRS ticket or similar. You would probably need to somehow confirm that you did write it, or were the original owner of the copyright on it. Plagiarism or not, it is still not encyclopaedic. I suggest you rewrite it so that it does not sound like it comes straight from a travel guide. More importantly the other article, Texas Chainsaw House, is in an even worse state, with "Eratta: The story in the movie is not a true story and no such chainsaw massacre ever occurred.", something which cannot happen on Wikipedia as you can easily re-edit the text to make it correct. Please address these issues. Chaosdruid (talk) 01:04, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- You know better than I (and your comments make sure that I am aware of that fact) but when you write any language in an article would you necessarily create an OTRS ticket before using the same or similar language elsewehere???? I'm not trying to be testy, but I don't understand. Do you create OTRS tickets for everything you write that is similar between two articles? Sometimes similar or related articles need or deserve similar language for one reason or another. Bottom line: I certainly may not be the best editor, and I admit that, but my intentions are good and I'm just trying to do a good job with a few limited subjects about which I am familiar. I'll be glad to look at the articles again and see if they need to be re-written and so that they are not like "straight from a travel guide." (PS -- The "Errata" comment was added by another editor, not me, originally. I added it to the second article trying to be consisent.) Please Assume Good Faith with me rather than lecturing me, and I'll work to correct the situation. Austex • Talk 02:28, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- After re-reading both articles I can see where there are elements that are overly flowery and that do indeed read more like a travel brochure. Hopefully these are not items that I wrote, but regardless I have done some moderately heavy editing or removal of language that I hope makes them both more suitably encyclopaedic. Thanks for your insight. I'm happy to work on them but your comment "Please address these issues" assumes that they are "my" articles to fix. No one owns any article on Wikipedia, as you know. (Your comments would have gone over better in a polite way assuming good faith, than your more sarcastic comments that got my hackles up unnecessarily, but hey, whatever floats your boat). Austex • Talk 02:54, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- PS - The vast majority of people believe the movie was based on true events, hence the appropriate notation. The director/screenwriter says it is still, by far, the most common question asked of him at any event where he speaks. Wouldn't you agree that if Wikipedia is, indeed, to be encyclopaedic then it ought to point out facts such as this?. Austex • Talk 03:05, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- OTRS tickets are for someone to say "I (made it/wrote it/filmed or photographed it) and I want to say that Wikipedia can use it."
- If you want to include material that is the same as material on another website, Wikipedia has to cover itself against lawsuits - to do that the copyright holder has to give permission, or the website owner has to say that they took it from Wikipedia (or we have to be clear that this was what happened).
- If you are not familiar with the policy on copyright violations it is is here: WP:COPYVIO
- The fact that the film was not based on reality is really for the film articles to deal with rather than these on the house. If you wanted to make it about the house, it would probably be more like "though no such murders took place in the house".
- Now to move on to the more personal aspects of your comments:
- To assume that I was being sarcastic was entirely unfounded, and I certainly haven't lectured you.
- "but your comment "Please address these issues" assumes that they are "my" articles to fix" - You said "was in fact text written by me personally" - forgive me if I thought that you were the one that wrote it - and "Text alleged to be "plagerized"" was also what I was talking about when I wrote "I suggest you rewrite it so that it does not sound like it comes straight from a travel guide".
- When it comes to my comment "Please address these issues" I was, of course, more talking about the issues of plagiarism and non-encyclopaedic prose, though the fact is that it was you that added the "errata" to Texas Chainsaw House, though in good faith I am sure, nonetheless it is wrong of you to assume that I insinuated that it was you that originally wrote it, just that you put it into that article. You were the person that wrote the sentence in the first article Antlers Hotel (Kingsland, Texas) though weren't you? see this diff [1].
- I assumed good faith, perhaps you would be so kind as to assume the same? Next time please be careful when reverting edits that contain "plagiarism" or "copyvio" claims, they are very serious allegations and should be discussed rather than put back in again - saying "item not plagerized as the material in both articles was written by the same author for use on both sites" does not really go to proving that there is not copyvio or plagiarism involved, as I hope you are now aware from reading the copyvio policy.
- Now to move on to the more personal aspects of your comments:
- Thanks for changing them, they are much better now. I take it you understand what I meant now about the travel-guide-sounding parts, though the fact that you are an experienced editor with over 3,000 edits means that I would automatically think you have read a lot of Wikipedias articles and policies by now (and before you think I am lecturing you, I am not) - I have done a little editing on the section, mainly tidying up the prose. I also removed the errata part. Chaosdruid (talk) 05:09, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- My apologies if I insinuated anything about you, as I would not want you to insinuate things about me. Email is a difficult way to communicate meaning. I beleive (unless I am mistaken) that the langauge that I wrote was used in two articles, both in Wikipedia, not in another publication, hence my claim of "no plagerization" and no need (I don't think) for a OTRS ticket. I do understand about COPYVIO but do nnot personally think it applies here as it is not copying copyright material. However, I do understand your concern about promotional-like prose which is not what I intended. I'll look the articles over once more again, and then perhaps we can both go on down the road with our respective edits and both working for the benefit of Wikipedia. Austex • Talk 14:10, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
From the Varangians to the Greeks
Your move is incorrect. Trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks is a well established historical term and from the Varangians to the Greeks is idiomatic phrase. We can't just rename the article even if the title is historically imprecise according to certain considerations.
I ask you to find some admin who would revert your move. If you disagree, I'll have to do it myself. GreyHood Talk 21:00, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- I tell you again, the name of the article is an idiom and a historical term. The Russian Wikipedia article and almost all other Wikipedias' articles on that route are named using translations of the Russian phrase From the Varangians to the Greeks (unless other languages have their own specific names). Whether it is from the Primary Chronicle or not I don't remember. It doesn't matter where the route led to if we know its name and the name is a fixed idiomatic phrase. Also, the route led also to Greece as a part of the Byzantine Empire, and Byzantines were known as Greeks in sorrounding countries at that time, so your reasoning is not entirely correct.
- So I kindly ask you to revert your move. GreyHood Talk 21:13, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- At some point of history, and specifically at the period we discuss Greeks were part of Byzantines, and the largest part. "Varangian Route" or "Varangian Road" are not the best terms since there were two major Varangian routes, the second being the Volga trade route. GreyHood Talk 21:34, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- Also, you should understand that if the move is not uncontroversial, than WP:Move request should be made instate of moving the article right away as you wish. Cheers! GreyHood Talk 21:37, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- The move was not controversial. The previous page move was against the consensus on the talk page in 2006 Talk:Varangian-Byzantine_trade_route#Title, where the consensus of three editors was that the title "Varangian-Byzantine trade route" was correct. How can you suggest that it is controversial when three editors discussed it and I agreed with them?
- That is why I am not going to revert myself, it would be against the consensus of that discussion. Chaosdruid (talk) 21:48, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- The subsequent discussion on that page shows that the consensus changed. GreyHood Talk 21:56, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- If anything, it simply says that the largest amount were of the opinion that it should be Varangian-Byantine, fewer for Varangian-Greek, and less for the original title. I have already stated I do not mind you reverting, and that I will not as I feel it is against consensus. Is there is a particular reason, technical or another that I am unaware of, as to why you feel I should move it rather than you? Chaosdruid (talk) 22:10, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- Well, the discussion in the next section shows that the editorial consesus changed, both through talk page discussion and edit history.
- And yes, thanks for the advice, I've changed the title back. Sorry for the confusion, I thought that only an admin would be able to make revert move and that if you ask yourself to do it there would be less bureaucracy. But for some reason there was a technical possibility for me to move it back. GreyHood Talk 22:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- Forgive me if I've sounded curt. You are welcome to suggest a proper move request or start a new title discussion on the talk page to seek a new consensus, of course. Varangian-Byzantine trade route actually gets just about 1.5 times less google hits than Trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks and an attempt to suggest it as a new name might be not entirely without a chance. But anyway, it should be done properly, without simply changing a part of an idiomatic expression in the text. Cheers! GreyHood Talk 22:41, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Chinese Indonesians redux
Hi Chaos, I was wondering if you'd be able to give Chinese Indonesians a final look before I send it to FAC. There are two major changes since your copyedit. I have rewritten the lead paragraphs to make them look less like a summary of the history section. There is a new section on "Literature and media" which was added by an IP after your copyedit and later had the consensus to keep to increase comprehensiveness of the article. I have since rewritten that section. No pressure though. If you feel that you are too busy, just let me know. Thanks again! —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 00:52, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". Boldface
Hi Chaosdruid. You can probably guess why I'm asking this, and I hope you won't mind, but I wonder whether you think the list at MOS:BOLD#Other uses is inclusive or exclusive? I admit it's a slightly rhetorical question, because, if exclusive, then WP:MOS#Consistency within articles is violating it, and there are more examples on the MOS page and related pages (e.g. the example in WP:EMBED#"Children". So I would take the permissive view of it. What do you think? Best regards, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 10:18, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey I am sorry it took me longer. so i am ready to coedit my article about ASD. So is it gonna happen? what is your schedule? i guess we are suppossed to be online at the same time in order to talk and edit it. I have noticed that my dear Andy is here again with his amazing suggestions. Ive also noticed that the info about Marwick with references to the american patent office and as well as the info about Mayboroda's stuff with references to the WIPO site have gone forever..I am really pissed off...why the hell did they do it? By the way you were saying that at least info about Mayboroda's patents would be definetely kept in ASD..so why is it not? So how shall we meet? i know they've cut it down..
haha this is really funny. ok. but where have Marwick and Mayboroda in the ASD gone? there were sources for Marwick and Mayboroda. they did not take it into account...on top of everything i have had to deal with this..I mean how are we going to communicate over the issue? Why are they proposing to lump it into another article? although there is some logic in it, but that big article is a mix of god knows what and basically, there are lots of subtle differences between their contents..ok i think we can do everything in our sandboxes as you say nd then once they are properly sourced we can put them back (Ivan.sychev108 (talk) 17:18, 29 August 2011 (UTC))

Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.
We have had 55 people sign up for this drive so far, and 31 have participated. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! It's not too late to join the drive if you have not already done so. Another great way to help out is to watch-list the Coordinators talk page and participate in the ongoing development of the Guild.
So far, we have reduced the backlog by 75 articles, or about 19% of our goal. We have also cleared January 2010 off of the queue and are close to clearing off February and March. If each participant were to copy edit two articles from February and March 2010, they would be completely eliminated from the queue.
Several concerns have been brought up this drive about the usage of rollover words. Rollover words only count if they're from the previous drive. For example, if you received 1,000 rollover words in March and didn't participate in May, your rollover words return to zero. This is to encourage participation in multiple consecutive drives. Hi! I saw your copyedit summary in Talk:History of Sri Lanka, which is very much insightful. I was editing the Sri Lanka article during last month or so, but came across your notion only by now. I have not yet started editing the History of Sri Lanka article, and was completely oblivious of your observations while editing the "History" section in Sri Lanka article. Since you are familiar with the background, can you please review my edits in that article and do some copyediting wherever necessary? The artcle has undergone some serious editwarring, but that may not distract you because it has been basically around the details related to Sri Lankan Civil War. I am looking forward to hearing more from you. Thank you! Astronomyinertia (talk) 16:42, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 backlog elimination drive report
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.
There were 58 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 42 participated. This is a slight increase from the July 2011 drive participation, where 39 out of 50 people that signed up participated. Thank you to everyone!
During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 146 articles, or by about 4%. Overall we did well, especially considering the exceptionally large number of articles that were tagged during September. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 4854 articles, or by about 58%. If we keep up our current rate of copy editing, the backlog should be reduced by 65–70% by the end of this year. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. Barnstars will be handed out this week. Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in November, and we hope to see you there! The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters. |

Not sure where we are with this copyedit, or how busy you are at the moment, but I thought I would let you know that I have finished messing with the last section with which I had plans, so we are just hanging on before going to GA. To add further confusion, an editor has been in and done some copyediting over the first 2/3, so I am not sure how much of that needs looking at. All the best.--SabreBD (talk) 08:12, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

I just wanted to know if you were going to keep copyediting the article or not, because I am just about to send it to the FAC. MG70 (talk) 01:22, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- I withdrew the nomination to send it to the FAC, but if you need to make any more copyedits, feel free to do so. Thanks. MG70 (talk) 14:43, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
A cupcake for you!
I love cupcakes and I had to give you one after finding out that you are feeling a bit under the weather :( Well don't worry! You can now stay in bed eating this cupcake and enjoy some WikiLove by us :) Best, Jonayo! Selena 4 ever 14:04, 2 November 2011 (UTC) |
Romances copyedit problems
A couple of months ago, you copy-edited the article for Romances. The reviewer has commented on some grammar issues here. Since you already copy-edited the article, I thought I might ask you. I'm sure you're quite busy so I hope I'm not disrupting anything. Thanks. Erick (talk) 02:19, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you good sir. :) Erick (talk) 16:31, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you get better soon. The GAN end on Nov. 5 so there's plenty of time. :) Erick (talk) 14:06, 2 November 2011 (UTC) Thanks Chaosdruid! I knew I could count on you! Send everyone on the Guild my regards. :) Erick (talk) 15:23, 6 November 2011 (UTC) Good news Chaosdruid, it passed! Thanks again for the copy-editing! :)
Feedback Dashboard task force
Hi Chaosdruid,
Since you were a part of the WikiGuides project, I thought I'd give you a heads-up about a new way you can help/mentor newbies on en.wiki: we've recently released a feature called the Feedback Dashboard, a queue that updates in real time with feedback and editing questions from new registered contributors who have attempted to make at least one edit. Steven Walling and I are putting together a task force for experienced Wikipedians who might be interested in monitoring the queue and responding to the feedback: details are here at Wikipedia:Feedback Dashboard. Please sign up if you're interested in helping out! Thanks, Maryana (WMF) (talk) 22:01, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 46 people sign up for this drive so far, and 28 have copy edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't joined, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far. Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. The election will likely run in the last two weeks of December. Please consider helping out by nominating yourself or someone else in the Guild as one of our coordinators. The commitment is for a six-month term. Thanks. Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters |

Question
hello,
what do you think about the prose of Otis Redding? I am just asking because I want to bring it to GAN and then to FAC. If you have time, could you perform a copyedit? Thanks.--♫GoP♫TCN 17:27, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Hi
Hey Chaosdruid. How are you? I nominated "Rehab" for FA third time. And there are still prose issues according to some reviewers. Since you c/e for FA, can you also address there concerns now too? I would be grateful. — Tomica1111 • Question Existing? 00:51, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Query
Sorry to bother you.I noticed that you have worked with both User:Jethwarp and User:Hardyraj on Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya article.I have a hunch that both these accounts are actually same and linked to one particular person, thus its seems to be a case of sockpuppeting. It occurred to me because I am a party to the deletion discussion of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jyotikalash and I hold opposing views to User:Jethwarp and thus said so in my argument. Now, suddenly User:Hardyraj has come up and supporting User:Jethwarp. In normal case it isn't a big deal. But when I went through their contributions I found that both of them contributed to more or less same articles.Even their userboxes are almost same.Even they both write "Removed" as "rmvd unref and notabliity tag"(see this for User:Jethwarp) and "rmvd tag bombing"(See this for User:Hardyraj).I felt that as you have worked with both of them ,so you are the best person to answer this. Please do oblige and tell me whether or not it is a result of my overreaction.I have also refrained from posting this at the relevant forum because they are only my suspicion and I dont have any proof for them.Sorry again to bother you Vivekananda De--tAlK 05:32, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
- I am quite quite apprehensive to go about it.But not to be feared by the consequences.I have formed a background for the argument.I would request your inputs.Please.
"The users User:Jethwarp and User:Hardyraj seem to be sockpuppets.Firstly, to clarify all doubts I a party to the deletion discussion of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jyotikalash and I hold opposing views to User:Jethwarp and User:Hardyraj. But,their opposition is not criteria for my suspicion. The reasons why I think they are both same accounts are as follows:-
- they both write "Removed" as "rmvd unref and notabliity tag"(see this for User:Jethwarp) and "rmvd tag bombing"(See this for User:Hardyraj).
- They have done similar edits. See this for edits to Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya. If anybody goes through the edit history of Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya he/she may notice that these two users have edited almost one after the another. As in here.Here.Here.
- Their edit summaries are starkly similar See this. One person's edit summary is "(fixed some type errors)" while the other person's is "(fixed some typo errors etc.)".Another instance is for User:Jethwarp who writes "(added further works from books mentioned Nanji Bapa ni Nondhpoth & others)" and for User:Hardyraj who writes "added some more information from book Nanji Bapa ni Nondh-pothi" published in 1999 from Baroda)".
- Another instance is from Kadia kshatriyas.See this.Notice the similarity in the lines they edit.It is as if a single person is correcting his own work. From Devaria, Kachchh See this for similarity. From Sinugra see this&this. From Dhaneti.See this for the similarity of the lines both are editing. From Mistri (caste) See this for similarity. Its not in one or two articles, please check the edit history of User:Hardyraj to see the coincidence of pages between these two editors. In all of the above cases both users have edited almost one after the other.Even if its a coincidence then how can two persons edit at a similar interval and that too to similar lines even without even knowing each other.
- Now, there can a case that the two talked about these on their talk pages and discussed among themselves regarding all the above articles.Strangely they both only talked only twice with each other See this for the case when User:Jethwarp talked to User:Hardyraj about Bachal. And the 2nd time "Can you please help translate a few article to Gujarati laguage. If, yes, if will copy pase the material on you page. Thanks!!Hardyraj (talk) 12:08, 28 November 2010 (UTC)--Although, my mother tounge is Gujarati, I am not an expert in translation. I prefer to write in English. Thanks.R P Jethwa (talk) 16:25, 28 November 2010 (UTC)".No other conversation took place.
I know that accusation is a grave one and that I am accusing editors far more experienced and productive than I am.If my fears turn out to be wrong then my apologies to all of the people who were directly/indirectly affected by my false accusation.I am sorry " Please check all these evidences and please check for my overreactions.Thank you again for your fast reply.Vivekananda De--tAlK 09:57, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
- So here goes nothing. The page for sockpuppeting investigation is this [[2]]Vivekananda De--tAlK 10:20, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for all your help.I getting ready for a steep learning curve on a roller coaster on WP.God help.Vivekananda De--tAlK 10:55, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
- Just updating you on the SPI matter."They" both edited from same ISP and with similar IP address. The user compare report says that their total combined edit is 5529.I dont know but this could be easily be the longest alleged socpuppeting (not confirmed yet) ever in WP.I fell off my chair when I read the user compare report.By jove!I also think you had narrowly missed finding out their socks during the editing of User:Jethwarp/Kutch_Gurjar_Kshatriyas_(KGK)_contributions_to_the_Indian_railways.Strangely "they" both had the habit of not writing the in the sentences which you had to correct countless times.Regards. Vivekananda De--tAlK 06:21, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
- They both turned out to be socks and subsequently User:Hardyraj has been blocked.Vivekananda De--tAlK 15:38, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
