File:Global NEO survey sites.jpg

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you recently made an update to File:Global NEO survey sites.jpg

The world map showing major surveys was updated to replace Kiso observatory with "Tomo-e Gozen" and "BATTeRS". Whilst I can see why this is useful to your particular article, it has caused problems elsewhere (more info below). I suggest you make a copy of the original image and create a new image instead of updating this one, which intends to show only current major surveys, and uses names consistent with the article it was created for.

More detail on why the update causes a problem. The article the diagram was originally created for (Asteroid impact prediction) refers multiple times to Kiso Observatory, rather than Tomo-e Gozen. It does not currently mention BATTeRS. The page for BATTeRS itself, seems to be referring to Bisei Spaceguard Center. Whilst this is a notable historic observatory, unlike Kiso it doesn't seem to be making any significant contributions to surveying the skies for NEOs at present. My feeling is therefore that it might be better to revert the changes to the diagram and make a new diagram that shows exactly what you need for your article. It is very interesting and informative to find out about BATTeRS and Bisei Spaceguard Center though, thanks.

Some more info: 1. the minor planet centre credits BATTeRS with 445 minor planet discoveries, the last of which was in 2010 (there is also one discovery credited to the observatory "Bisei SG Center" by the minor planet centre, which was back 2007). [1] This may make it worth mentioning in the Asteroid impact prediction article for historic reasons, but seems not to belong in the diagram as it is not currently discovering any new NEOs. 2. Regarding Kiso, the name Tomo-e Gozen is the name of the instrument, not the observatory. As well as not matching with the article text, the observatories listed by the minor planet centre name it as Kiso, not Tomo-e Gozen. E.g. 2022 ET discovered earlier this year [2]

If you have new information and references which supersede the above (e.g. if BATTeRS has a new or planned instrument), please provide the references, otherwise I will remove it from the diagram. Similarly with the Kiso / Tomo-e Gozen name change. I am not in a hurry with this, please do take time to create the new diagram you need for the BATTeRS article, which should simply be a case of copying the update you have made to this diagram. I can then revert the changes. Many thanks Rafflesgluft (talk) 14:30, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree you opinion. You can revert the changes. Thanks a lot. Bussard (talk) 11:06, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
