Slightly late, but...

... a very happy birthday for yesterday! I hope it was an extra enjoyable one. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 07:21, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Ooooooooooh!!! Aaaaaaaaaaahh!!!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeagh!!!!

Kind of you to remember. Muted (non-alcoholic) celebrations this year, but Things can Only Get Better. Brianboulton (talk) 09:04, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Rite of Spring

Hi, Brian, hope you're well. I've had the Rite on my watchlist for a while (mainly to try and minimise vandalism when you had to reduce your activity) but I wondered if you'd care to weigh in over there on some edits over the past month... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 07:47, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Ian. This user is also making large numbers of undiscussed edits to other Russian-related music articles, and needs to be halted before he/she does real damage. I've left a polite-ish note on the Rite talkpage asking for prior discussion of any proposed changes beyond trivial or uncontroversial matters. If this is a warrior he/she will take no notice and press on regardless, in which case other action may need to be taken. My wiki-time and activity are still somewhat limited, and I may need further help in dealing with this. Brianboulton (talk) 09:13, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Ernest Joyce

A flag popped up telling there had been a new link from Ernest Joyce to an article I'd created years ago. Investigating, I saw it was you, again editing on the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Quite like the old days. So, this prompts me into wishing you, rather belatedly, welcome back. Thincat (talk) 05:56, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, ThinCat. I do occasionally revisit my old Antarctic haunts to update, repair links etc. Joyce was one of my early efforts – 2008 I think – and I recently spent a while attempting to bring it up to today's FA standards. It may yet make it to the main page! Brianboulton (talk) 08:54, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Noye's Fludde

Thank you for Britten's short church opera that "has delighted performers and audiences for more than half a century. Among its memorable moments is the great storm, during which the human and animal occupants of the ark pray for salvation in the words of the hymn "Eternal Father, strong to save". Throughout, the mix of conventional and improvised instruments create a vivid sound picture, from the portentious opening to the redemptive finale." Great to watch you working, and thank you for clarification for another classical music FA. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:31, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Brian, hope all is well. Feel free to drop by the old haunts any time. A little birdie told me that Rimsky-Korsakov will be re-running soon at TFA. I have tweaked the previous TFA blurb and put it in User:Dank/Sandbox/5. I see you were one of the reviewers at its FAC ... how does this look to you? - Dank (push to talk) 00:47, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi, Dan, nice to hear from you. I've further tweaked the R-K blurb in your sandbox – see if you're happy. I'll try and find time to read through the article in case there are any problems that need sorting out. I see there's a junk "Commemoration" section, added since the FAC, which is uncited, contains an external link, and will definitely have to go! Brianboulton (talk) 10:14, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

I have left the above the above at peer review as I had mentioned I planned to do when we spoke. Comments welcome. Hope you're doing well. Trying to clear up a number of items prior to Agnew.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:25, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Claud Greenhill

We seem to have got as far with the PR as we are likely to - what next? Do we go for GA, or straight to FA review? Best, Smerus (talk) 09:27, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

  • Oh, definitely FAC – the GA process wouldn't be particularly suitable for an article prepared very much with FA standards in mind, and with half a dozen peer reviewers we don't need the extra voice. So I'd close the PR now, nominate for FAC, and wait for the floodgates to open (or not, as the case may be). Brianboulton (talk) 15:20, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Brian – I'm planning to post the FA nomination around noon EST (16:00 UTC) today. —swpbT 13:28, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

I'll watch for that, and add a comment on my involvement. Brianboulton (talk) 13:59, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Now. —swpbT 15:58, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Emily Davison

Hi Brian, Thanks for your thoughts at the recent PR for Emily Davison. The lady is now at FAC, should you wish to comment further. Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 17:17, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Monteverdi's lost operas scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Monteverdi's lost operas article has been scheduled to be rerun as today's featured article for September 14, 2017. Please check that the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 14, 2017, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 08:26, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

There don't appear to be any obvious problems with the text or links, but I'll comb through properly and make sure. I'll also do a final check on the blurb after it's been trimmed. Brianboulton (talk) 09:03, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, good to see it again, with so many thoughts behind it, such as "Monteverdi played a key part in the development of opera as a theatrical and musical art form, so depending on your standpoint you may wish to bless him or curse him. Of the ten operas he actually wrote himself, seven are lost; in those days operas marked specific occasions or celebrations, and once they had been performed their music tended to be discarded like yesterday's newspaper." - Coincidence or careful planning: Monteverdi is mentioned a second time on today's Main page: DYK that baritone Georg Nigl, who names as his favourite roles Monteverdi's Orfeo, Mozart's Pagageno, and Alban Berg's Wozzeck, created the title role of Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night? - Other little vanity: DYK that I met (unplanned) Aribert Reimann in a performance of his Medea? - I am happy that you are back to combing "your" articles! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:57, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Brian, I've done a little more work on this section (diff) to tie the fictional examples back to material earlier in the article. The section is a little bigger, but (I think) in a way that's in line with the guidance on pop culture material. Since you were concerned about the section, I thought I'd give you a heads up, in case you want to say anything in the FAC page. I can also ping the other reviewers who've offered support for the article, if you think I should. —swpbT 18:37, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

It's not necessary to prompt the reviewers who've indicated their support; it's quite OK for you to do minor work on the article while it's still on FAC. I won't add anything myself for the moment. Having gained the support of two of our most experienced and knowledgeable FAC reviewers, you're doing fine! My guess is that before promoting, the coordinators will require at least one more support from someone other than myself, and they may also ask for a spotcheck on sources to test for close paraphrasing. They usually do this for first nominations. So we need to be patient a little longer - I'll chime in next week if necessary. Brianboulton (talk) 20:13, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

CM

Hurrah, we are through. Many thanks for your great work on this, which made it possible. One related loose end on which I'd be glad of your opinion. List of compositions by Claudio Monteverdi and Stattkus-Verzeichnis substantially overlap - only that the List gives also the lost works, and SV gives all the individual components of the books etc. Really there ought to be a merge of some sort - what do you think?--Smerus (talk) 21:42, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Yes, and after a relatively smooth FAC (of which you bore the brunt). The collaboration was indeed a pleasure - Monty had been in my sights, on and off, for many years, with an increasing feeling that I ought to do something...well, now it's done, thanks to your initiative. I agree with what you say about the need to merge the SV details into the list of compositions, and I'll attend to this (after a break from CM for a week or so). The coordinators raised a couple of other issues with the article, the first relating to alt text, the second to duplicate links. I think I've sorted out the links. On alt text, my individual position is that I'm unconvinced of its value and don't normally include it, although I don't object if others add it later. So I'll leave that for you to decide. Brianboulton (talk) 09:48, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

PR

Hi, I know that you are not involved with articles of contemporary artists, but I would really appreciate some feedback on this article's prose at this PR. – FrB.TG (talk) 19:50, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Can't promise anything – it's off my beaten track, but I'll try and give it a look-in. Brianboulton (talk) 09:48, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Dear Brian, hoping this note, actually more of a plea, finds you well. If you have the time and inclination, your comments on Churchill's country house would be much appreciated, here, Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Chartwell/archive1. If you have neither I will, of course, understand completely. With very best wishes. KJP1 (talk) 08:12, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Oddly enough, I've been trawling through the current FAC list looking for items of interest, and I marked this one for future comment. So I'll be there in a day or two. Brianboulton (talk) 09:55, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
Brian - that would be excellent. But, as I say, if things change and you've not got the time, absolutely no worries at all. If you can, however, I'd really appreciate it and I know the article will be improved thereby. Thanks and regards. KJP1 (talk) 10:40, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Balfour

Hi Brian, thanks again for your comments at the FAC for Balfour Declaration, which has since been archived. It felt from your comments like you have pretty healthy knowledge of the article's subject, which was great to see. If you have any further thoughts or input, I have opened another peer review. I would be very keen to keep working with you if you have the time. Regards, Onceinawhile (talk) 23:08, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. in normal circumstances I would welcome the chance to work on this article more actively – for years I had it on my long-term "to do" list, but never got round to doing it. At present the extent of my Wikipedia work is somewhat limited – I mainly confine myself to reviews, mentoring, and bringing older articles I worked on up-to-date. I'm presently involved in a joint enterprise with User:Wehwalt in expanding the article on the former US vice president Spiro Agnew, for which we've just opened a peer review. This is likely to be my main source of activity for the next month or so. But I'll try and find time to comment on the Balfour PR – I would very much like to see this on the main page for the upcoming centenary, although this will I think be a tall order. Brianboulton (talk) 12:40, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

Cosmo Gordon Lang scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Cosmo Gordon Lang article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 5 October 2017. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 5, 2017. Thanks! Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:10, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

OK, I'll look at the article and check out the blurb. Brianboulton (talk) 12:41, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
As part of our bargain with the people who work on the Main Page, the blurbs have to be under 1200, and it's really better if they're closer to 1100. Feel free to keep any of your text, but something has to go. - Dank (push to talk) 19:44, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
I've revised my version of the blurb to below 1200 characters. If you're still not satisfied, I'd appreciate it if you'd drop me a line here before re-reverting to the previous version which, with due respect to whoever wrote it, is not adequate as a final text. I am well aware of the importance of main page presentation and always take great care over these things, as I'm sure you do, too. Brianboulton (talk) 21:21, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
It looks very nice, thanks for your diligence. - Dank (push to talk) 22:00, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for "an enigma. The youngest archbishop in England in recent times, be began with great promise and large expectations, but in the end, by most accounts, he fell rather short – he himself judged his career a failure."! - One question not worth an extra thread: what do you think of my effort to say a bit more about Mozart's arrangment work of Handel than "stucco on marble"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:44, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Aberfan

Hi Brian, I hope all is well with you. As you know, I have recently been working on the rather shocking Aberfan disaster; the article is now at PR. Should you have the time and inclination, I would be absolutely delighted to hear any thoughts and comments you may have about its suitability for a push to FAC. I think I've covered the role of SOD in the proceedings, but please let me know if I've missed something crucial. Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 14:12, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Been waiting for this and will certainly read and comment. Brianboulton (talk) 15:11, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
