I apologize, I didn't realize you were moving the content to its own article, I just saw that a large amount of content was removed and thought you were vandalizing. Next time be sure to include an edit summary detailing what you did so that no one gets confused :). -GregAsche (talk) 01:56, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

The new New Zealand "wikicities" site
Hello again, BrianNZ. You may have noticed I made myself visible at your "homewiki". I have subsequently seen that you have further flattered me by copying a few "link" lines from my "en" user page (possibly from someone else's copy) to yours.
Good luck with the new NZ site. I have added it to my spam patrol and expect to contribute a bit of positive stuff now and again. But is it a genuine wikicity or an imitation? It should have its own page on the central Wikicities if official - and I see no reason why it shouldn't be official; places with a tenth of NZ's population have their own wikicities.

Maori
I've no problem with your idea of redesigning our front page, as long as you don't reduce the amount of "Te Reo" on it (which a cheeky American did and got blocked for a week). The small problem you mentioned has disappeared; don't tell that American! Robin Patterson 19:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
News from Esperanza
Hello, fellow Esperanzians! This is just a friendly reminder that elections for Administrator General and two advisory council positions have just begun. Voting will last until Friday, December 30, so make sure you exercise your right to vote! Also, I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Esperanza mailing list. I urge all members to join; see Wikipedia:Esperanza/Contact for more information. All you need to do is email me and I will activate your account. This will be a great way to relax, stay in touch, and hear important announcements. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?)

A message from you
I just got a message from you and am wondering what it means. Earlier, in the page Naruto_(manga) I saw someone wrote different things that were wrong and seemed kind of stupid, replacing correct information with the wrong information. I tried to tell someone about it in the discussion page, and tried to edit it myself, but when someone else edited it for me, I took my comment off the discussion page. Could you please tell me why I have received a warning for trying to do something good? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.92.80.199 (talk • contribs) 15:07, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

New Zealand Portal
Thanks for your offer. Feel free to add your name to the list of maintainers at Wikipedia:Portal/Directory.
If I'm away and unable to update the selected article/picture, I'll call on you. If you'd like to take over the primary responsibility for these features, post on the portal talk page with ideas for how you'd do things differently.
What I'd like someone to assist with immediately is keeping Portal:New Zealand/News and Current events in Australia and New Zealand up to date. Ideally, several news events should be posted each week, with links to updated articles. It is acceptable to post news without having an updated article. I'd also appreciate it if, whenever you come across a new article written about New Zealand in the last few months, you add it to Wikipedia:New articles (New Zealand) and consider if a DYK line can be created from it and added to Portal:New Zealand/Did you know list. If this list grows to more than a handful of entries, we might update the portal page DYK more often.
I see that there is now a Wikipedia:Featured portals page with criteria for becoming a featured portal. I have not looked at the criteria, but our portal probably isn't too far away. You might like to review the criteria and consider what we would need to do to become featured.
These are some ideas that came to mind as I was answering your post. Feel free to take up any or none of them. It was great to see your enthusiasm.-gadfium 01:54, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- Great, thanks for the latest news story. We can expand the section to four news stories if it's being updated reasonably frequently. Next time you add a story, don't drop the old one off the end. If the portal page needs balancing, add an extra DYK in from the reservoir of DYK stories linked to on the portal talk page.-gadfium 08:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Inquiry
In the ArbCom elections, you opposed my candidacy with the comment "Did not like the users conduct on the userbox debate". May I inquire what specific conduct of mine you did not approve of? Kelly Martin (talk) 19:04, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- What in particular about "the way [I] handled the userbox matter with the mass deletes" did you not like? Please be specific; I would like to know. Kelly Martin (talk) 22:02, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
As I'm sure you know, user templates are opinions shared by several members of Wikipedia. They are templates employed on individual user pages only, and do not claim to represent the official shared position of the Wikipedia collective. Still, some self-appointed dictators feel it is their responsibility to control individual expression on user pages. Template:User-AmE-0, for example, was deleted by User:Kelly Martin; after being recreated, it was tagged for deletion by User:DreamGuy and its category removed by User:Carbonite. There are but a few people who want to control personal expression on user pages at Wikipedia and hundreds of us who do not want these few to succeed. In standing together to revert tyranny, despotism and censorship of individual expression on our personal pages, we can easily overcome these dictator-wanna-bees. Wikipedia can be for the people. Please help us oppose those in the Arbitration Committee Elections who would turn Wikipedia into a dictatorship of controlled articles and user pages: Kelly Martin, Jpgordon, Fred Bauder, James F., Jayjg, and Mindspillage.
If you feel passionately about this, you can join us in alerting other users of these individual tags, that their personal expression on their user pages is being censored by people like User: Carbonite. To help, just go to any of the templates that User:Carbonite has tried to change, and alert the people in those categories that they are not alone in their outrage and opposition. --لæmäļ al diη 21:56, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Out of curiousity....
what answers tilted you weakly onto the "no" side? --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 22:25, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough. You might want to consider that when I answered, this was the form of the "User Bill of Rights", and it was basically rubbish; the current form is entirely different, and is actually quite reasonable (rather than being a legalistic structure devised by someone with a history of seeming more interested in disputation than in creating anm encylopedia.) --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 22:43, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

An Esperanzial note
As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.
In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)
Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

New Zealand portal
I'm happy with the logo for New Zealand Cadet Forces, but if you can take a photo to illustrate the article as well, that would be good, and I'll choose between the logo and the photo when I come to write up the portal selection.
I moved the article down the queue because I have a city and a biography at four-article intervals. If there's a particular reason for wanting the cadets up in a particular week, I'm happy to rearrange things. Thanks for the suggestion.-gadfium 02:08, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Another Esperanzial note...
Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

My mockup for Te Hau Kāinga
Hello - I have on my user page at the Māori wiki a mockup of my proposed new version of the main page. Since I translated some of the text into Māori the page has looked particularly ugly, so I had a go at a redesign. I know you had a draft version but I'm not sure whether you are still going to do it - I used your idea for the Sister Projects format among other things. I thought we needed some more colour on the page as well, and to reduce how much space is taken up by the long lists. I have included all the info and links on the current page, plus put some English fairly prominently to acknowledge the input of English speakers so far. Kahuroa 09:32, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways, from comparing articles that need work to other articles you've edited, to choosing articles randomly (ensuring that all articles with cleanup tags get a chance to be cleaned up). It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 13:54, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
NZ Cadet Corps photo
Thanks for that. I'll use the photo if possible, but I'm not quite sure of the etiquette here. The people in the photo are recognisable; should they be asked for permission before we use their photo online? I realise the photo was presumably taken in a public place and the people were aware they were being photographed, and so there isn't a legal issue as far as I am aware.-gadfium 03:44, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- If you told them at the time it was for publication, then I think use on Wikipedia is fine. If they reasonably assumed it was for your private photo album only, then I don't know. I'd say if they were doing anything silly or potentially embarrassing, it would be fairly clear cut that the photo shouldn't be published without clear approval from the subjects, but there's no reason to suspect that anyone would not want the photo published. I go around in circles on this.-gadfium 04:24, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't see a problem, then. I suggest you add the photo to the article, and let them know out of courtesy next time you see them. You might even gain some converts to Wikipedia.-gadfium 04:38, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Nice Work :)
Hi,
I just want to say "nice work" getting a page up for Nick Willis. Not sure if you saw my reply to your message on my talk page, so I've put it below :)
- Yes, your right, Peter Snell won the gold at the Empire games not the Commonwealth games. As it was it was incorrect, but I happy with your changes. (It sliped my mind that it was the Empire games, I regared them as just a name change :) Best Wishes Brian | (Talk) 05:41, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- ""That's okay :) It probably wasn't clear enough as is, and as you'll see I explained it further... I kept hearing that last night over and over again so I thought it'd be worth including :P Go Kiwi! CarlyPalmer 05:55, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Nice to see the Netballers won our sixth, isn't it :) CarlyPalmer 06:33, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for putting the page up. It was good to hear Nick acknowledge his faith and the prayers of support. Googled up this page from August, http://www.2kplus.org.uk/cherald/cherald050822.php which includes this - He told a captivated audience how his faith helped him cope with disappointment and shared one of his favourite Bible passages, from Isaiah 41. "This is the one that I really rely on for my inspiration," he said, "when I'm really tired in the morning and I have to get up and run 20 kilometres, 30 kilometres in my training every day. When I'm tired and I'm weak and I'm really struggling to find an energy source I just refer to this verse and it really lifts me up: 'He gives power to those who are tired and worn out. He offers strength to those who are weak. Even though youths will become exhausted and young men will give up, those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.' So this is where I find my strength to get out and run 160 kilometres per week in rain and wind or hot humidity." rossnixon 09:55, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Courtesy note for New Zealand Cadet Forces
I gave the coutesy note for this article to User:Liberator as he created the initial stub and has stayed involved with it since. The bulk of the text seems to have come from an anon, and I think you've probably put the most effort into the article of any signed-in contributor. I don't generally thank the portal maintainers, but I didn't want you to think I hadn't noticed your work.-gadfium 03:15, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

No worries
Care to block a tonne of open proxies on Wikinews (I even have a script to do it, you just plug in the credentials and hit run). If you have a linux box I can email you the script elsewise I can give you shell access to do it -- Tawker 01:06, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Sadly it does, its *UNIX or variations only (it uses a bunch of shell applications) - if that doesn't scare you away I'll email you a username and password for access -- Tawker 01:22, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
NZSL not yet official language
The reason NZSL has been taken out of the infobox is that it actually is not an official language until the recent bill receives Royal Assent, and this apparently has not happened yet. See Talk:New_Zealand_Sign_Language#Not_official for a discussion. -- Avenue 01:30, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- I tried to make it clear in my first edit summary - guess I was lazy the second time around. Anyway, I just found out it may have received Royal Assent yesterday. See the NZSL talk page for details. -- Avenue 02:00, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download
Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. NZ chapter
Absolutely. Count me in. I was thinking of organizing a meetup here in Auckland, but slacker that I am, I haven't got around to it yet. Do you think that that would be useful for getting things moving? GeorgeStepanek\talk 08:56, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- My plan for the meetup was to simply to announce a date and a location, and then just see who turned up! I was thinking of meeting around twelve noon on a Sunday in a pub or cafe, where we can get a meal and some drinks. If it's going well then the discussion could continue all afternoon. And if no-one showed up, then I'd at least have a meal out with my girlfriend!
- Any Sunday would be good, as long as it's not a bank holiday weekend, and people have a couple of weeks notice. I feel that trying to get agreement on a specific date is would be difficult to impossible: in today's busy society there will be always be someone who can't make it.
- I picked twelve noon so that those who wanted to could go to church, and those who didn't could sleep in. :) For the location I was thinking of an Auckland suburb close enough in to be central, but far enough out to have plenty of free parking. Ellerslie perhaps? I realise that Auckland is not central to the country as a whole, but at least three times as many people will be local as compared to any other city in New Zealand.
- And as for the mailing list and irc channel, well, I'm not big on those, sorry—I don't even have an irc client installed—so I probably wouldn't join in. (But don't let that stop you!) I'm just happy discussing things in a wiki way.
- So those are my suggestions. What do you think of them? GeorgeStepanek\talk 08:23, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- Incorporation sounds like a good plan to me. I guess we need physical signatures for that, not just people typing in a wiki page? GeorgeStepanek\talk 08:54, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- How about this: Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland? GeorgeStepanek\talk 10:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Excellent. It looks like you're a lot more organised than I am! GeorgeStepanek\talk 11:18, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I´m confused
Hi there Brian,
since you are the admin, as far as I understood, I´d like to ask a question, which I already asked on my personal talk page, but I have to admit: I´m a bit confused.
So far, I did not fully understand the way editing, talking an questioning works here at wiki. The friend of mine, which I could ask, is currently on holiday, so I thought, I drop you a line, since you´ve welcomed me so nicely.
At the mo, after browsing a bit in wikinews, my main question is: Is it: Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License or is it: Creative Commons 2.5 Attribution License
which I was advised by MrMiscellanious. He told me, the second version is the correct one, but so many people are using the first version. And I can find it all over wikinews in the advices.
Thanks for your help! tara gumboyaya 18:53, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

its alright
Ya know, its alright, I don't give a flying fuck about Wikipedia. I just think that an encyclopedia should actually be neutral and point out that Peter Ellis is actually a kiddy fiddler rather than some sick cleaning of what he did. He molested children. There is a reason he was found guilty, and a reason every single inquiry into him portrays him as being a guilty child molestor. Because he is. Yet the Wikipedia article makes it sound like it didn't happen. Doesn't Wikipedia have something about actually being neutral? Or is it just whatever people want to say. At least the article on Helen Clakr admits its propaganda.
User namespace transclusion in articles
Please remove the links to User:Brian New Zealand/Temp/info/bottom from articles. Articles should link to user namespace. For templates, there is the template namespace. The easiest way to fix it, would be to move your user page to Template:Infobox Taupo bottom and update the links.
Help:Template gives an overview of ways to create templates, Wikipedia:Infobox templates lists a few infobox that may be good samples for New Zealand.
Please check if the infobox provides information specific to the articles it's being used in. For lakes, there is a specific infobox: Template:Infobox Lake. You may want to use that one on Lake Taupo and Lake Rotoaira rather one that seems to be made for articles about towns and cities (without any parameters, yours is for Taupo only though). If an infobox is used only in one article, it's not necessary to place it in template namespace. -- User:Docu
New Zealand Collaboration of the Fortnight
Shouldn't you be declaring a new Collaboration topic today? I'm happy to enforce the minimum votes per fortnight criteria if you declare the new topic each fortnight.-gadfium 09:47, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

I made some edits to the khatri article twice but they were reverted both times by Moderator3000. One was correcting a link to surname called Seth. The other was about Walias (which I linked) also being also called Ahluwalias.
Both these modifications are valid but they are being reverted both the times. I don't know if Moderator3000 is an official moderator of Wikipedia or is just doing what he seems fit.

Helen Clark
I have removed the POV-check tag and instead put a section expand tag on the achievements section. --Midnighttonight 07:40, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Blog...
Hi Brian. I've just found your 'New Zealand Monarchy' blog. Very interesting. I love debating this issue and look forward to doing so with someone who doesn't resort to name-calling. --Lholden 03:27, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've had a read too. You should edit your template coding a bit better though. At the moment when use the Google autoreadfinder for a website, yours comes up with Mr Holden's blog. I suppose that's what happens when you steal his template! Anyway, you need to edit it, the info on feeds should be somewhere in the meta data. Your blog feed is http://nzmonarchist.blogspot.com/atom.xml if you need to know. Also, I would link to it on your sidebar as well. It's a good blog to read, although I disagree with it! --Midnighttonight 02:51, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
VandalProof 1.2 Now Available
After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:10, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
where is voting taking place for the tie? Will another section be added onto the page or will it be done on the talk page? --Midnighttonight 08:13, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've set it up at Wikipedia:New Zealand Collaboration of the Fortnight#Tie breaker vote --Midnighttonight 08:29, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Treaty of Waitangi Greivance Industry article
The primary author of this article has responded by reverting the edits I made, and adding more POV. I will dispute the neutrality of the article. --Lholden 22:48, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Current Events Oz & NZ
Hi Brian New Zealand
I see that you have made a recent addition to Current Events Australia and New Zealand (now Current events in Oceania). Thanks for that. Also, I thought that you might be interested in this as someone who is working on WikiNews.
In my work, I help to produce the Austral Peace and Security Network report (APSNet), a bi-weekly roundup of security news for Australia and the surrounding area. You might find it a useful source for the occasional post to Current Events in Australia and New Zealand.
There is an archive of 2006 APSNet issues, and a page for free e-mail subscription, if you think that it would be useful.
My apologies in advance if you feel that this is inappropriate in any way. -- Jonathan O'Donnell 01:16, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Oaths
Thanks Brian. I will add something about the Oaths (Modernisation) Bill when I get the time. --Lholden 02:11, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've added a section on the modernisation of Oaths to the Republicanism in New Zealand article. Don't worry, I've given equal weight to both ML and RM press on the issue :-) I've also added a see also to your Oath of Allegiance (New Zealand) article --Lholden 00:54, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- One question, I think it has already been before the Government Administration Committee report here. It's first reading was 18/5/05, Select Committee Report: 24/3/06
- according to parliament.govt.nz Progress of Legislation pdf It is waiting for its second reading. Brian | (Talk) 01:09, 1 June 2006 (UTC).
- Ah, that would explain why I couldn't find it as part of the Justice and Electoral Committee! I'll amend it to suit. --Lholden 01:19, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

As per Talk:New Zealand Parliament, I have split them off, what do you think of them at the moment? Any ideas, suggestions, comments? BTW: Happy <strikeout>Republican day</strikeout> Queen's Birthday. --Midnighttonight 04:50, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Repetition
Brian, as I suspected, your Queen of New Zealand is highly repetitive, and like its Canadian counterpart overplays the relevance of the monarchy in New Zealand. --Lholden 05:35, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
The Queen of New Zealand article seems to be free of POV, although "With the position of the Treaty of Waitangi under a republic remaining a concern to many Māori" - this implies that Maori are more likely to support monarchism. That is at odds with Nigel Cox & Raymond Miller's 2003 chapter "Monarchy"( in Raymond Miller (ed.) New Zealand Government and Politics textbook) which has Maori support for the monarchy at 41.1%. With the statement that "Contary to perception of Maori as being strong monarchists, considerably fewer Maori than New Zealand European support the monarchy." --Midnighttonight 08:12, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- p.s. archive your talk page. if you don't know how, I will do it for you if you want. --Midnighttonight 08:13, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
