Slowking bios
Happy new year, Bri! Is there an umbrella discussion of [deleting the persistent slowking bios]? Other options tried [a deleted list, or drafting]? It feels wasteful... I'm sure there's been discussion outside the individual AfDs, feel free to point me to it. – SJ + 04:01, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- Happy New Year back to you.
- Maybe the short answer to your question is that I'm not aware of any drastic "nuke from orbit" plan if that's what you're asking. Just G5s as we go. I only got involved relatively recently, so I don't really know the whole history.
- There have been discussions about what to do about them. I'll assume you haven't seen these and just infodump.
- Here is one, at the top of the page.
- Other context can be found at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Slowking4.
- I will say that the community's reaction does not appear internally consistent, especially considering the fact the LTA is allowed to be active on Meta and on other Wikimedia things (including conferences and DC meetups, apparently, and maybe Hawaii as well). ☆ Bri (talk) 05:53, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Miss Universe Philippines 2024
Hello @Bri. I find some paragraphs at the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 irrelevant to the article and the tone of some paragraphs are "unencyclopedic", especially one that talks about this edition being a "clash of veterans" (every year of Miss Universe Philippines has been dubbed a "clash of veterans"). The article is starting to have a tone similar to a newspaper article. Could you check if the article is still encyclopedic or not? "Removed paragraph adds greater context to the article" as a comment is not sufficient as to why it brings greater context to the article. Thank you! Allyriana000 (talk) 21:15, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I
Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:
- Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
- Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
- Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
- Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
- Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
- Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
- Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
- Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
- Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
- Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
- Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
- Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
- Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
- Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
- Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
- Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
- Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.
To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Iran or Persia for Miss Universe 2024?
Hello @Bri! I have made a discussion about the use of "Persia" or "Iran" in the aforementioned article. Iran will debut at Miss Universe, but the candidate will use the name "Persia" in the competition as the Iranian government disallowed the Miss Persia Organization to use "Iran" for their candidate at Miss Universe due to religious beliefs. The problem now arises as the users switch Persia to Iran and vice-versa. Would you give your take on this at the talk page? It would be greatly appreciated if you do so. Thank you! Orphan
I disagree with your removals of orphan tags, but I am not going to war over it.
But looking at WP:ORPHAN it states thare: More colloquially, editors also sometimes use "orphan" to refer to pages that do not have as many incoming links as they ought to, even if they do not meet the technical definition for orphan status.
Based on that, I contest your removals. The Banner talk 10:00, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- It's a little confusing what you're telling me here. Do we need to have a discussion on whether it's acceptable to remove the orphan tag on articles with 1 or 2 inlinks? If so, maybe in a more watched area. Unfortunately WT:Orphan seems to be pretty quiet; only a single edit there in 2024. Maybe @JoeNMLC: can give some advice. ☆ Bri (talk) 15:05, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- That is exactly what I mean. An article with zero incoming links is indeed always an orphan. But in my opinion, incoming links from a list are not really helpful. A more content based approach is better. In my opinion, a list of things fails that content-approach. And it is not incorrect to say an article is an orphan with just a few incoming links. But a wider discussion is welcome. The Banner talk 16:17, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins
Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
- Proposals 2 and 9b (phase II discussion): Add a reminder of civility norms at RfA and Require links for claims of specific policy violations
- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Women in Green GA Editathon June 2024 - Going Back in Time
Hello Bri:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in June 2024!
Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

Recent comments about section of H-1B
I saw you added an "original research" annotation to a section I edited relating to travel. I have since clarified how the FAM addresses most of the paragraph by adding specific sections of the FAM that different parts of the paragraph pertain to. Additionally, I have added two new non-FAM sources to support other parts not explicitly supported by the FAM. Accordingly, I removed the original research marker/annotation. As to the question of WP: HOWTO, I respectfully personally disagree that the section, as is, is "borderline WP:HOWTO", because none of the content provides instructions that are actually actionable (unlike a baking recipe let's say) for anyone likely to read the article. In other words, a visa applicant does not have control over the actions by a consular officer, so cannot actively use the information supported by the FAM and other sources cited to to take any concrete steps as they have no direct say over whether a petition is sent back to USCIS or regarding any action taken by a consular officer. - Still delayed in reviewing, but thanks for updating the section. I was concerned before that the section read like "in order to return to the U.S. you need to do X Y and Z...". When I get to reviewing it, I may do some copyediting if that concern remains. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:53, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Benzinga (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.A suggestion for News section on signpost
I remember asking one of the signpost regulars on discord about it, but it didn't actually get added. But meta:Wikimedia_Foundation_Bulletin/2024 was started last month and might be good for a small section on the News section. Best I can understand, it's WMF's ways of keeping the community updated on all departments and they recently published the one for 06-02, so we might see 07-01 before next signpost even. Fellow Wikipedians, I'm about to take a hiatus on most editing, starting with lightening up on monitoring of beauty pageant articles. It's a mess of unattributed unreferenced content, nonstandard markup including inappropriate use of flags, and ... let's say passionate editors. I hope that others like @Sciencefish: can keep the momentum moving in the right direction. This is after all an encyclopedia, not a fansite. I've listed some pages to watch at the top of this note, which I'll soon be taking off of my own watchlist. Note that many of these pages are protected due to persistent disruptive editing (including sockfarms) and all are under WP:GS/PAGEANTS. ☆ Bri (talk) 16:54, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Miss Teen USA (& Miss USA) articles
Hi Bri. While I was taking a break from WP I noticed you redirected many of the Miss Teen USA and Miss USA articles. Most have significant media coverage as evidenced by a quick search in Newspapers.com, but at the moment the Wikipedia Library connection is broken so that while I can search and view the articles, I can't clip them to reference in the article. Just wondering what the best way forward would be? Wait until they (hopefully) fix the Newspapers.com connection? Or just reference the newspaper details without a clipping link? I was able to fix some of the Miss USA articles from existing clips but the job would be a lot easier starting the research from scratch. Cheers CJinoz (talk) 11:17, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure exactly which page you intend to work on, but I think the ones I redirected had at most one or two sources. I guess the best way is to wait until your sources are accessible, then restore the page from the last revision prior to the redirect, and add the sources? Still, adding just one source to a one-source article probably won't be good enough for general notability, so I hope you plan to bring them up to snuff for WP:NEVENT. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:22, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- I just re-read your note and maybe you're worried about referencing an article that you can read without a URL to paste? This is OK, if you look at Wikipedia:Citing sources#Newspaper articles, you don't have to have an URL for a valid newspaper citation in Wikipedia. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:23, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Reference for Miss Cosmo
Most of the sources about the delegates are announced on instagram, not on anywhere else but some editors did not allow to add these sources into the article. That's why i could not add these references. What can i do ? i thought that as long as these references from instagram will not take up more than 60% ? i had tried to add other sources as much as i can but some sources can only be announced and found on instagram Rain0099 (talk) 04:37, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Rain0099:Sounds like you are asking what to do if sources are less than exemplary. I'd say there are following options.
- Leave the article as a draft (or move to draft) until better sources appear
- Publish with poor sources and take your chances that it will be challenged by another editor and possibly deleted, stubbed, redirected, or draftified.
- Personally I don't have a big problem with Instagram sourcing for announcements of regional contestants, but I don't think it's good to have the entire article based on Instagram alone. Lack of any independent coverage, especially after the finals, is a pretty good signal that the event was not notable. Good luck. ☆ Bri (talk) 13:50, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Why u deleting Miss Grand China on Contestants List
excuse me please better source for Miss Grand China winner. This page of MGI 2024 is prevent vandalism. 77.77.218.29 (talk) 07:15, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- I assume you are referring to this?
- Sorry, I feel the burden is on the person adding a blank row. Not on me to fill in the row for them. It is supposed to be a table of selected people, not a table of names of countries followed by a bunch of blank columns.
- In other words, tables of people "who have been selected" should not be set up for contests where someone has not been selected. It is self contradictory and just looks bad for a factual encyclopedia. ☆ Bri (talk) 13:34, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
Women in Green's October 2024 edit-a-thon
Hello Bri:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!
Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

Hello @Bri How are you. I saw the news that Host country will be Philippines replaced United States 77.77.219.127 (talk) 12:47, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- If there is a citation for that, it can be added to Draft:Miss Charm 2024 and maybe the draft can be submitted. ☆ Bri (talk) 13:30, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Miss America 2003 redirected
Didn't we just do this? You said you wanted one reliable source, and I'm going to hold you to that. This article has that source. --GRuban (talk) 12:54, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- Back in July I said
I refrained from making any more edits to the articles actively being rescued, in recognition of your good faith effort to improve them. But also in good faith you have to recognize that eventually all content, especially that regarding BLPs as these do, must be referenced under several policies including WP:V. Right? In other words, preservation of unreferenced content is finite in duration.
- I think we're still in the same situation. Preservation of bad article state can not be indefinite. Hugely under-referenced articles, such as where there is only one source indicating the year's winner and what song they sang for the talent contest, or not even that much, is not tenable.
- In all cases (unless I made a mistake), the Miss America articles were tagged for at least a couple of weeks before any more changes were made. Maybe you should propose a new way forward that allows for article improvement. In truth I don't know what's the problem with redirecting as it preserves all prior edits for any editor to restore – when appropriate based on referencing – even without admin privileges. ☆ Bri (talk) 15:05, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- The problem is that it's not visible to the users, which is whom we're writing for, right? Not the editors? Anyway, baby steps. Miss America 2003, the one I'm talking about, has maybe half the content cited, you agree? Do you agree you are not going to turn it into a redirect a third time? Then we'll discuss the others. --GRuban (talk) 16:27, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'll follow up on the specific article issue at Talk:Miss America 2003. ☆ Bri (talk) 16:42, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello Bri
Earlier today, you removed ‘a blank row’ that was for Miss Universe Turkey. This was incorrect and should not have been done, as it clearly states in the Returns, that Turkey is participating.
I have corrected this error as the winner HAS been announced for Miss Universe Türkiye 2024.
Please bear this in mind during any future edits.
Kindest regards
Edit - I cannot seem to reply to you directly so have added my newer reply to you here.
As my above comment states, you removed the row for Turkey, when the pageant was clearly taking place tonight. Go back and look at the previous edit history. At 15.22pm this afternoon, you made that edit.
Sophies mommy1988 (talk) 22:30, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- Can you show a diff? I last edited Miss Universe 2025 in July, amd before that once last year. Neither had anything to do with turkey. ☆ Bri (talk) 22:38, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- please add new comments below this one, it is very confusing to reply to a changed request that I already replied to once.
- to cut to the chase, we are talking about two edits: 1) I removed a line that had only the word "Turkeys". and 2) you added a row with Turkey and a contestant's name but no references . only #1 is consistent with editing standards. pkease do not add unreferenced rows to tables, regardless of when in the future the contest will be held. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:15, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Excuse me, but it IS permissible to add the winner of a pageant, along with the [citation needed] tag, as often we view the pageant online via streaming etc, and get the name of the winner, then after searching for a suitable reference, we can then cite that reference. Also, when I’ve seen a pageant is coming up, especially within the next 24 hours, other editors will add the flag deco and country name etc, in order that they or another editor will find it easier to input that winner etc. I’ve seen this happen this way for years, before I started editing on here.
I need your help

Miss Universe 2024
Hello again
The source that the previous editor to yourself on the page, did actually source the official Miss Universe voting app, which is run by Choicely. Would that not be suitable as a source, even in the interim?
Kindest regards
Sophies mommy1988 (talk) 22:51, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- Are you saying the choicely.com should be considered WP:ABOUTSELF? That seems like a stretch, since choicely seems to be an app builder technology and is not directly connected to any pageant. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:33, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

- I am also curious about why the salting is set to lapse after 2 years. TrangaBellam (talk) 19:01, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Also, is there a way to run 87329 on all the wiki-DBs (without manually setting the database)? You seem to have known Quarry for a while! TrangaBellam (talk) 19:08, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Perhaps not on Quarry. There are some SQL hacks but the server seems to be set up to disallow the USE statement and probably would not allow the hacks as well. ☆ Bri (talk) 19:17, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed not on Quarry. I have a script setup on PAWS to run a query on all wikis. Running that now. The reason "USE" doesn't work is that different wikis' databases are stored on different servers, not that it's disallowed. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:29, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- I think what I was trying to say was that even a fancy
Union
workaround to access two tables would require the use ofUSE
, but that won't work because USE has been blocked on Quarry. But maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Your explanation that it's not just separate tables but separate databases is more accurate, probably. ☆ Bri (talk) 21:17, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

- Has this been covered by The Signpost? It seems an unprecedentedly detailed intervention (not attributing any negative motives) by WMF into content, going to the extent of suggesting how the community ought to write articles, deal with COI requests, etc. TrangaBellam (talk) 19:52, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
