Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Bmurphy380! Your additions to Eastern Airlines Flight 494 have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 16:03, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Hi, Bmurphy. I appreciate your interest in documenting marine biology, but please do not use Facebook as a source – let alone the only source – to cite a statement. At present, there do not seem to be any reliable sources discussing this video, and as such, a mention should not currently be included in the article. Copyright
[edit]Also, please heed what Diannaa told you about copyright. You uploaded File:Memoirsqueensla51haml 0132.jpg to Commons, which is patently not your own work, yet you claimed otherwise when uploading. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 04:27, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Notability
[edit]Hi, Bmurphy. I've added the {{notability}} maintenance template to the Draft:Northwest Airlines flight 969 article and the Eastern Airlines Flight 494 article. While both are interesting incidents to read about, I don't think that they meet Wikipedia's notability policy on what should or should not be included in Wikipedia. If you are able to identify additional sources that show widespread independent coverage of these incidents, you should try adding them to the articles as soon as possible, because the draft article is unlikely to be accepted without that, and the non-draft article is likely to be deleted. The FAA reports don't help establish notability, it would have to be independent sources, like newspapers, books, journals, and so forth. Another resource that may help is WP:AIRCRASH which is an essay that helps gives some direction to article creators about whether or not an incident is likely to be considered notable. Hope that helps. RecycledPixels (talk) 17:53, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you tons for the insight! I'll take look at WP:AIRCRASH. People like you make newbies like me a much more helpful aspect, so I really appreciate your help.
- The article for Eastern 494 looks like it was approved for public viewing. Although, I still 100% agree that it needs more valuable sources to add value to the article to really showcase it as a notable event. It might take additional time to find these additional sources, but I plan on taking on the task.
- Again, thank you for your help with this! Bmurphy380 (talk) 07:38, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
- Circling back on the Eastern Airlines Flight 494 article. For now, I've merged the content with Eastern Air Lines#Non-fatal_accidents_and_incidents so the incident can remain accessible to readers and I have redirected the article. If you eventually find information that establishes notability, the article history has not been deleted, so feel free to restore and expand the original article. RecycledPixels (talk) 17:59, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for taking the time with this! Very much appreciated! Bmurphy380 (talk) 04:04, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Copyright again
[edit]The picture file:DC8 Crash.png that you uploaded to Wikipedia Commons and said that it was your own work is clearly not your own work. It is an image published by the NTSB and therefore is in the public domain, but the picture File:Superior-1984.jpg that you also claimed was your own work was taken from the ALPA magazine website at [1] and is a copyright violation. You have been previously cautioned about your misattribution of images and this is an issue that is taken very seriously at Wikipedia. RecycledPixels (talk) 18:29, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- You've uploaded a few other images to Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons, all of those you said were your own images. Are there any of those that weren't actually yours, and if so, can you update the source information on those images? If you don't know how to do that, ask for help.
