The Clash

Really appreciate the herculean effort in the copy-edit of this article. It obviously needed a fresh pair of eye and I must say you most certainly went above and beyond. Many thanks! Karst (talk) 13:52, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

No problem, @Karst:, it's an interesting article and I enjoyed copy-editing it. I added a few {{cn}} templates to an uncited paragraph in the final section, otherwise there weren't any major problems. I've certainly dealt with articles in worse condition, just a shame I couldn't bag it for the January c/e drive! Good luck with the article and cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:10, 2 February 2024 (UTC).

GA

I am looking to do GA and looking for advice on Dia. The film included unknown actors prior to the film's release that's why there is a Background section. The article is relatively short though. DareshMohan (talk) 05:11, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi @DareshMohan:, after a quick glance I can only say the sections "Plot" and "Critical reception" should be split into two paragraphs. The lede could also be expanded to better summarize the article. I'd also suggest either changing the {{quotebox}} to a {{Blockquote}} or working the quoted speech into regular text; per WP:MOS, pull-quotes aren't supposed to be used in articles. I'm not even sure how relevant the director's opinions are to that section. I'm tired right now but I may work on it sometime. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:54, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Narwhal

I know you don't accept requests but narwhal has been listed at Copyeditors Guild for a month and could now use a copyedit since it is at FAC. LittleJerry (talk) 23:44, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi @LittleJerry:, thanks for your message. i know you're not the requester here but it's advisable to wait for the c/e to occur before nominating for FAC, which i see is swinging towards oppose. I doubt a c/e would save its bacon at the moment; copy-edit isn't content work. Also, I see no reason to prioritise a request made in March over those that have been waiting since January. However, i might take it for the April Blitz if it's still there. Good luck with the article. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:18, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
Okay them. I didn't nominate the article but asked since both opposes were based on prose. LittleJerry (talk) 01:44, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your work on the article. Prior to your work the article followed WP:FALSETITLE so could you please keep this in mind moving forward (i.e. "the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift" vs "American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift", "the producer Nathan Chapman" vs "producer Nathan Chapman")? Ippantekina (talk) 04:07, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

HI @Ippantekina:, thanks for your message, I'll bear it in mind. Cheers,Baffle☿gab 20:26, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

Autopatrolled?

You deserve the autopatrolled flag; let me know if you want it. All the best, Miniapolis 16:49, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi Miniapolis, thanks for the offer but I'm not a prolific creator of mainspace articles (my WP-career total is nine so far!) so I don't really think I need it. I'll keep it in mind though. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Readability script

This is in continuation of our conversation on the talk page of User:InformationToKnowledge. You said there "I've no idea what your readability script does; I don't need help to detect difficult-to-parse texts". Just in case you are curious about that script, you can see it explained and discussed here. Or direct link: Readability tool: To install this script, go to your common.js and add the following line: importScript('User:Phlsph7/Readability.js'); // Backlink: User:Phlsph7/Readability.js.

I know you said you don't need such a script. That's great but for a lot of people it will be very useful, even to just get a very quick overview of what's going on on an article. This is also how I detected that you had not yet copy edited that particular section in the climate crisis article, without even having to read it. After your edits it was no longer bright red... I will ask a couple of follow-up questions on the talk page of climate crisis but noting that it should not chew up too much of your time. EMsmile (talk) 07:37, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi again @EMsmile:, thanks for your reply here to my comments there (permalink for context). I'm glad lots of other people find your readability script useful but I don't. I edit here in a browser with JavaScript disabled so such a script is not useful to me, as well as for the reason you quote above. I've replied to your comments at the article's talk page here (permalink for context). Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:35, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Quick GOCE rule question

Hi! I know that you don't accept requests outside of the GOCE process, and I won't be doing that. Instead, I have a more procedural question.

Essentially, if I have submitted a certain request a while ago, but then I decided another article needs copy-editing more than the original one does - would I be allowed to change the article link under that request while it is still unclaimed, or do I have to delete that request entirely and "restart the countdown" for the new article request? Since we are limited to 2 active requests at a time (and I certainly understand why) it's a very relevant question, and I do not think it is explicitly addressed in the rules.

Again, thanks for answering my request for the Climate crisis article! InformationToKnowledge (talk) 01:52, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi @InformationToKnowledge:, yes, you are allowed to replace one unaccepted request with another, and you don't need to re-date the replaced request; just note the replacement in your edit summary. I'm glad the c/e was useful, though I wasn't expecting as much fallout (see above) from what was a fairly straightforward c/e! Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:44, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

CC license abbreviations

Hi Baffle gab1978! Hope you are doing well. I wanted to let you know that according to the CC style guide,

  • Individual clauses (e.g., BY, NC, etc.) should be strung together with a hyphen.
    For example: CC BY-NC-ND
  • Modifiers (e.g. CC) should not be followed by a hyphen.
    For example: CC BY

Therefore, CC-BY-SA is actually a typo and should be corrected to CC BY-SA.

(And I am still grateful for the work you did at Jonathan Baldwin Turner :D)

Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 00:31, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi @HouseBlaster:, thanks for your message; I will take notice but I think as long as the person / bot / thing reading the message understands it (and I normally do wiki-link the term), the CC licence is fulfilled and there's not a problem. I'm glad the work at the Turner article is useful. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:56, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh it is certainly not an attribution issue, just a very pedantic typo (it is the typo I have "adopted" via {{User Adopt-a-typo}}). Best, HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 00:59, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
No worries; and perhaps you could let Creative Commons know page 15 of its style guide (2019) talks about something called "semi-olons"... :D Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:15, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Gutur copy editing feedback

@Baffle gab1978, Thanks for your copy editing of Guntur. I found it reads much better and learned use of semicolon from your copy editing. I made one minor change, which I hope is fine. Arjunaraoc (talk) 05:46, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

No problem, @Arjunaraoc:, I'm glad the c/e was useful. Good luck with the article and cheers, Baffle☿gab 22:52, 12 June 2024 (UTC).

Mamie Van Doren

I may not be able to add more content to the Mamie Van Doren Wikipedia page, as I am away for four weeks in a non-wifi area. During that time, can you please improve the wikipedia page, getting rid of gossip and other issues that I believe are detriments to the article. Wcamp9 (talk) 02:36, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Wcamp9:, I probably won't do any more work on that article as I'm busier IRL right now and I've moved on to other articles. I have slightly restructured it though. There's no hurry anyway; I hope you have an enjoyable break. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:01, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Upcoming expiry of your ipblock-exempt right

Hi, this is an automated reminder as part of Global reminder bot to let you know that your WP:IPBE right which gave you the ability to bypass IP address blocks will expire on 17:40, 3 October 2024 (UTC). If your IP is still blocked (which you can test by trying to edit when logged-out), please renew by following the instructions at the IPBE page; otherwise, you do not need to do anything. To opt out of user right expiry notifications, add yourself to m:Global reminder bot/Exclusion. Leaderbot (talk) 05:22, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

GA?

Can you check if Vaanam is eligible for GA? DareshMohan (talk) 22:16, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi @DareshMohan:, no I can't. I'm a tired copy-editor and I don't do GA reviews. You should know the drill by now; check the article against the criteria then nominate for GA, and someone will review it eventually. Baffle☿gab 23:37, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, Baffle. My bad, yes I meant that I wanted it to be eligible, not that you should review it. Still, I must thank you for Iyarkai. DareshMohan (talk) 04:53, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
No problem; I was tired and I didn't quite read your message properly. I think all articles, except stubs and lists, are eligible for GA status but not all are suitable or of sufficient quality. So yes the article is eligible for GA status but it's quality is a different matter. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 18:17, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

your message on Text Editing

Dear Baffle gab1978,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have drafted a text for revising the article in English Wikipedia on 'Aristophanes'. I have asked the help of an expert editor, and improved my draft (the biography of Aristophanes: a part of the article). After some revision, he advised me to ask the help of WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. Probably, I filed a request for review of my text in the wrong way. Could you please help and guide me to address it properly to the Guild of Copy Editors? I need a revision on my text before publishing on Wikipedia article. What is the correct procedure?. Thank you. HeracleonGelensis HeracleonGelensis (talk) 20:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello @HeracleonGelensis:, thanks for your message; I know Wikipedia can be confusing for new editors and I hope you won't let that stop you from editing here. Your edit earlier today incorrectly added article-like content to the GOCE Requests page; this should instead be added to the article Aristophanes, or you could work on it in your Sandbox. To request a GOCE copy-edit at the Requests page, find and click the blue button marked "Submit a request"; this will create a new subsection for you. Follow the text instructions that appear. Replace ===[[Articlename]]=== with ===[[Aristophanes]]=== but don't change the formatting at all. Then, replace the instructions with something like: "I have just expanded this article and I'd like someone to review and copy-edit my changes. Thanks, ~~~~". Please note, you may be waiting a few months for the copy-edit to be completed, but it will get done eventually. I hope that's useful; let me know if you need any more help. Good luck and cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:48, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Issue

I know I already have 2 guild editor requests. What do I do with this article Jagadeesh Kanna. It is expanded by one user who undoes my edits [1]. Now the article has references with spaces in between them and a unneeded filmography section (this is about an aeronautical engineer). DareshMohan (talk) 03:34, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi @DareshMohan:, thanks for your message. Are the playwright / actor and the aeronautical engineer the same person, or two men with the same name? If the latter, the article should be split so the two men each have their own article. If they are the same person, the filmography section seems appropriate but may be redundant.
I agree that article does need a lot of cleanup. It has excessive references, very excessive details and the refs are poorly formatted. I made a brief attempt but I self-reverted after breaking some references. If you are being reverted, you should discuss your concerns with the other editor on the article's talk page; explain your concerns and point them to the appropriate policy and guideline pages, like the Manual of Style and the BLP policy. If they are edit-warring, report them at the edit-warring board. They are fairly new here and may need some guidance in our wiki-ways, so do assume good faith in your dealings with them. Though if the problems continue, you can escalate through the dispute resolution process.
As for bringing it to the Guild of Copy Editors, we would likely decline a c/e request because that article needs a lot more than a copy-edit to improve it, and we'd be wasting our time if our work was subsequently undone. It could be tagged with {{copy edit}} but a c/e wouldn't fix the core problems with the article. I hope that's useful. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 10:19, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I have no interest in this article but I am just sad how they removed the template at the top and not responding on their talk page. DareshMohan (talk) 06:39, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
I note your lack of interest and I understand your sadness; communication is required. Perhaps a chat with an admin would cheer you up. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:08, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Re:Ambivalence (Neon Genesis Evangelion episode)

Hi! Thanks for your CE. I'm very grateful for that. Unfortunately, I'm not a native English speaker; that's why I ask for help to the Guild mainly. Do you have examples of poorly written sentences in the article and any suggestions on how I can improve my English? Anyway, every NGE episode has two titles, one in Japanese and one in English: The DO review simply has the Japanese title. Thank you! TeenAngels1234 (talk) 19:25, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi @TeenAngels1234:, thanks for your message; I'm glad the copy-edit is useful. Thanks also for clarifying the dual titles; I wasn't aware of this, despite having copy-edited some of these articles before. I note you've added this in a footnote, which I was going to suggest. Thank you for asking about the sentences I copy-edited; I hope you don't find my comments unkind or discouraging. I don't have the time to go through all of my changes, but as an example, this diff, where the first sentence was:

Gainax decided the basic plot for the eighteenth episode in the 1993 Proposal, with Shinji fighting an Angel-controlled Eva-03 piloted by his friend and making a choice.

This can be re-written as:

In the 1993 Proposal, Gainax decided the basic plot for the eighteenth episode would have Shinji making a choice and fighting an Angel-controlled Eva-03 piloted by his friend.

Merging together the two clauses helps the text flow more smoothly.
There are several ways to improve your English, depending on your skill level and what you want to achieve. The BBC has a Learning English website, and the Australian ABC has a similar website. Perhaps you can find some short courses local to you, on an online course may be more suitable. exposing yourself to as much written and spoken English as possible may be useful too. I hope that's useful; good luck and cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:40, 8 December 2024 (UTC).
No, don't worry. I'm trying my best to improve it and your comments are useful. Thank you again! TeenAngels1234 (talk) 08:45, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Eternal Blue copyedit

Hi Baffle gab, thank you for stepping up to help with my article. There is one thing I'd like to ask which caught me with some surprise - maybe I don't know something. I would like to know why the wikilinks were removed from quoted material, such as Billie Eilish and nu metal; I thought them obvious enough to save. Also, that Sam Carter sadly isn't notable. I fixed that dab.

I do not mean for this to sound defensive; I seek to understand, not to criticize. I solicited this, after all, and you've worked several of my postings before. 😊 Much appreciated, mftp dan oops 14:26, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi @MFTP Dan:, thanks for your message; it's fine and I'm glad to hear the c/e is useful. Thank you for fixing my dab error; I usually do check links go to the correct article but I obviously didn't this time. But I'd have fixed that in my next editing session anyway (thanks to the bot!). :)
Per the Manual of Style, I usually remove wikilinks inside quotations. According to MOS:LINKQUOTE:

Be conservative when linking within quotations; link only to targets that correspond to the meaning clearly intended by the quote's author. Where possible, link from text outside of the quotation instead – either before it or soon after. (If quoting hypertext, add an editorial note, [link in original] or [link added], as appropriate, to avoid ambiguity as to whether the link was made by the original author.)

I appreciate the examples you give are unambiguous, "nu metal" at least can be (and is) linked outside the quotation and I think most readers would have heard of Billie Eillish. It's fine by me if you wish to re-link some of those terms. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:01, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks!

... for setting up the voting, and for your diplomacy and tact. All the best, Miniapolis 16:04, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
