Wikipedia's guideline on conflict of interest

[edit]

I have posted the information below as a warning of potential future problems, to help you avoid them. To avoid any risk of misunderstanding, this does not imply any criticism of you. JBW (talk) 11:46, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation @JBW. BLN Vimal (talk) 15:08, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, BLN Vimal. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. JBW (talk) 11:40, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information @JBW. I have reverted the edits has it might fall under COI. I will start using propose changes (edit request wizard) moving forward. BLN Vimal (talk) 15:05, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Username Change

[edit]

@JBW I see that you are one of the global renamer. I have raised a request to change my user name in renamer but now I am thinking of not disclosing complete name. Can you help me on that please? BLN Vimal (talk) 17:55, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you (JBW) please help me choose a new username? I do see your response on the Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple page BLN Vimal (talk) 20:40, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually writing and editing the message in the following paragraph when you posted your latest message above. I have now added another paragraph relating to what that latest message says.
Problems due to using one's real name are rare, and don't usually occur for people like yourself, wishing to provide information about your business. However, they do sometimes occur, and can at times be very unpleasant, so avoiding using your real name may be a good idea. Is there another username you would like to choose? Or would you prefer to just stick with the one you already have? If you do wish to suggest another username then check first that it isn't already in use. You may already know how to do that, but in case you don't, follow this link: Special:CentralAuth, type the username into the box, and click the button. If the username us already taken you will see some information about the account; if it isn't, you will see a message saying There is no global account for "whatever name you typed in". Let me know if you do want a username change, and what to change it to. Once the change has taken place, you should be able to log in with the new username, and the same password as before.
As for helping you choose a new username, I'm not sure what to suggest, because I don't know what kind of thing you would like. It can be quite helpful to have a username which indicates a connection to your business, for transparency about the so-called "conflict of interest", but Wikipedia policy doesn't allow the username to actually be the name of the business (don't ask me why). Therefore some people choose names like "A Jones at Blue Widget Company", or "ABJ at BW Company". JBW (talk) 20:59, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @JBW.
Your explanation really helps. I would like to have this account specific to the company. Can you please help me change the username to "VAP at Blackline Safety".
Please let me know if this works and doesn't violate the policy. I do checked it and no global account exists. Thanks much.

Thanks much @JBW

Requesting edits

[edit]

I have added the names of founders that you asked for at Talk:Blackline Safety. However, here are a couple of pieces of information relating to your message to me on the talk page that are worth knowing for future use.

  1. You made a mistake in my username, and then corrected it. If you link to an editor's username, for example as [[User:JBW|JBW]], and in the same edit also sign your message with ~~~~, then that editor will automatically be notified of your message. However, that automatic notification does not take place if linking to the username and signing with ~~~~ are done in two different edits. On this occasion I came back to check this page, so I saw your message, but I might not have done so. If I make that kind of mistake I usually remove my message and then do the corrected version in another edit, but some people do it by adding another edit, with just the username link and signature. Either way works.
  2. I was happy to make those edits for you, but it may be better to make a more general request for anyone to make an edit, rather than specifically targeting me, by posting {{Edit COI}} with your request. The working of that is described in detail at Template:Edit COI, but basically you just post that to the talk page in question, and accompany it with the necessary information about the editing you are requesting. Thank JBW. You are so kind and helpful. Thanks much for the guidance and information. Moving forward will follow the recommended procedure. BLN Vimal (talk) 20:33, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
