Mentorship

[edit]

Hi Arive060. If you're wondering why I am here, it is because I was automatically assigned as a mentor to you. I see that you are a student editor and thus should have access to resources other than me, but if you're ever confused, feel free to reach out and I'll do my best to help. Good luck with your studies, Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know how to make a sandbox page and everything, I've kind of been struggling with just creating one for this wikipedia project in class Arive060 (talk) 01:03, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well a sandbox is just an area you can use for improving or drafting Wikipedia content. This page might be helpful. But I might be able to provide more specific advice if you tell me what you're supposed to do in your class. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:06, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have these modules/excersises where I have to Evaluate an article, chose an article from a list, and build a bibliography. I am not tech savy at all, so I am stuck in the mud here tbh Arive060 (talk) 01:10, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Any help is appreciated Arive060 (talk) 01:11, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so try to take it one step at a time. Do you know which article you would like to work on yet? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:20, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes this one, Ring (company) Arive060 (talk) 01:36, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so normally what I do when trying to improve an article is to Google it. It's a bit more difficult when you're searching for something with various meanings, so I would suggest searching for "Ring home security". There's usually a news tab that will show possible sources that are reliable. Seems like most of that article is pretty fleshed out so maybe you could try expanding the facial recognition section? Let me know if I've confused you. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:42, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wait so I google it on regular google search and then I go from there? Or do I search it up in the wikipedia search engine. And then what are the steps from there? Like I just want to have a page for my teacher to look at and it seems like I have to do a hop, skip, and a jump to even get a page. Arive060 (talk) 01:48, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well you're trying to search for sources, right? You can't cite Wikipedia itself, so you need to find a secondary, reliable source to cite. This page can help you with actually citing it. But I'm not your teacher so it's hard to guess what they really want you to do. It might be for the best for you to ask them (whether in person or an email) that you're confused about your assignment? I just improve articles for fun, not because I'm a student assigned to do that. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:56, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I get it, and how do I go about editing/adding my article to my sandbox? Arive060 (talk) 02:00, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And where do I put my evaluations of an article? Arive060 (talk) 02:03, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can just copy and paste all of an article into your sandbox, but for attribution reasons you should say "Copied content from Ring (company), see that page's history for attribution" in your edit summary. It looks like you already have User:Arive060/sandbox so you can just replace the content you have in there with that and then work from there. I don't know where you could put your "evaluations" or what you're supposed to do for that, so that's something you'd have to ask your instructor.
