Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of countries by style of national flags, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Hoe and Maasai. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Historic sites in Waterton

Hello, Arctic.gnome! Since you renamed the Jasper/Banff list of historic sites for the Alberta Rockies, I‘ve been thinking the locations in Waterton Park ought to go there as well. Now I notice you’ve moved those to the Southern Alberta list, where of course they fit equally—but so do Calgary and Banff … Anyway, many of the Waterton sites will have a lot in common with those in Jasper and Banff: rustic & railway styles, ski lodges, warden cabins, and so on. What do you think?—Odysseus1479 02:37, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Never mind, my mistake; from the map on the ‘parent’ page I gather that the region names are pre-defined, not just descriptive terms, with the Rockies district clearly restricted to the Jasper–Banff area. As you were …—Odysseus1479 23:39, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Our lists of historic sites should match our articles about Alberta regions. But I can't find a reference for the regions. I'm not sure where those groupings originally came from. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 23:48, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
I’m not familiar with that scheme either, which is why I didn’t recognize it as the basis for your reorganization until I saw the map. The user who created it hasn’t been active for a couple of years, so I don’t suppose there’s any point in asking him or her whence it was sourced; “GIS data” doesn‘t tell us much.—Odysseus1479 00:18, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
P.S. Now I see what you mean about references. (I’ve seen similar problems WRT definitions of unofficial Edmonton neighbourhoods.) FWIW in current government websites I found the land use regions, apparently based on the drainage basins; tourism regions, where the maps don’t show boundaries, but associated locations that include businesses outside each region (but I expect the actual visitor attractions would be indicative); transportation regions; and economic regions—none of which matches up very well. But it might reflect how one of these departments broke the province down ten years ago.—Odysseus1479 01:51, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Arctic.gnome. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Arctic.gnome.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Election template broken

Hi. I've come across a few cases that break {{Canadian election result/top}}. If you look at the as yet uncreated Category:Election, 1986 results by riding (and the equivalents for 77,78, 90, 94 and 98) you'll see that it's struggling to assign a year category properly for municipal/school elections. I don't know whether you want to exclude them or develop the template to generate proper year cats, and I certainly wouldn't fiddle with a complex, well-used template like that - but I thought I'd let you know it's breaching WP:NOTRED.<g> Cheers. OpenStreetMap (OSM)

Hi Arctic.gnome. Has there been a discussion in the community about including OSM links in articles, whether in list tables and elsewhere? While it is interesting to get a quick view of a municipality's boundary if one is interested, these are external links, which you know don't belong in the bodies of articles. The column of linked numbers looks awkward and the numbers and column heading are ambiguous. This column of links is adding clutter to crisp tables at List of specialized municipalities in Alberta and List of municipal districts in Alberta, in my opinion. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 01:32, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

@Hwy43: That's fair. But I think it would be useful to have the links somewhere on Wikipedia. We currently only link to maps via the GeoHack system, which only links to points, so it isn't very useful for large areas. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:23, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Web colours of the parties of Alberta

Hello! I am creating articles about lieutenant-governors/commissioners, premiers and legislative speakers of Canadian provinces and territories on Norwegian-language Wikipedia. I use web colours represententing various parties. It seems that the old system of, let's say   Alberta Liberal Party, in which #E51A38 indicates the web colour of the party in question, has been replaced by another one. However, this doesn't work on Norwegian-language Wikipedia. Is it possible for you to give me the web colours of the governing parties of Alberta 1905-2020? Thank you very much! Best wishes! --Mbakkel2 (talk) 11:26, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

@Mbakkel2: The full list of Canadian party colours is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Political parties and politicians in Canada/list of parties. These are all sourced from {{Canadian party colour}}. I see that Alberta Liberals should still be using #E51A38. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:10, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Some years ago, in this edit, you made some changes to the table which added the following labels:

Min. Minority government
LS Party won the election, but premier lost own seat

However, I can't find a "Min." or "LS" footnote anywhere in the table, and apparently in the last nine years nobody ever added them. Am I missing something -- are they actually there and I'm not seeing them? --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:45, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

An article you recently created, Order of precedence in Northwest Territories, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hello, Arctic.gnome. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Order of precedence in Northwest Territories".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Query

Hello, Arctic.gnome,

I watch the Move log and have noticed all of the retitling you have been doing lately. But I have a question: I just saw a move you did with multiple pages all at the same time. Is there a tool that allows you to do this? Because I move a page one at a time. I don't foresee any big article moves in my future, I was just wondering if there was a script that allowed you to do this or if you just had very quick fingers on a keyboard. Oh, in case it matters, I am an administrator on the project (I'm not sure if we have crossed paths before). Thanks for any information you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 18:58, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

I have all the pages I want to change in separate tabs, and paste the new title in each tab one by one, then click "move" on each tab one by one. It's a little easier that way. If I was moving any more than I did, I'd look into AutoWikiBrowser's move feature, which I think is only for admins. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 15:17, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
