Banned / blocked person editing article re: Michel Thomas

"Rivenburg" has made edits to the Michel Thomas article, from which he was banned & blocked several years ago. He was an LA Times reporter who was sued by Thomas for defamation a couple of years before Thomas died at age 90, in 2005, and for several years after Thomas died Rivenburg made extensive edits exclusively to Thomas's article to defend his point of view about the subject. Rail icons

Hi Alison, regarding your User:AlisonW/Rail Icons tables; there are places for icons like File:BSicon uÜABZ3rg.svg which end on a 45° angle, and which can be continued in a straight line also at 45°. However, I don't see positions for icons like File:BSicon kABZql.svg which end on a curve; these allow nice smooth curved junctions to be constructed. See examples at right. Border-to-Border Trail

Hi. I am trying to help a new editor Ericlboyd (talk · contribs) with an article Border-to-Border Trail (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and struggling a little. I came across this user helping the feedback patrollers in this post. The article needs a cycling/walking track diagram and we wish to ensure that

• we use the correct icon colours
• we do not "redesign the wheel"
• we use templates/subpages correctly
• we do not bother people like yourself too much

There is a draft route in the article plus a sandbox at User:Ericlboyd/Sandox/Border-to-Border Trail route. We need to add to the draft with codes such as unfinished sections, bridges, road crossings, tunnels, river walks, hills. I have already been told off for accidentally coding a legend page at Border-to-Border Trail/legend (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) by Timneu22 (talk · contribs) in this post. We have been reading Route diagram template and associated pages such as Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms. Happy LLGC Memories

Hi Alison - I'm simply thrilled to see the two LLGC Events Listings you've included on the LLGC Wiki entry, and I noticed too that they have your moniker at the bottom near the date. They brought a tear to the eye - how I miss the LLGC !!! You never appreciate things till they're gone... :(

I started volunteering in the Print shop at LLGC in late 1986, and I remember printing subsequent listings myself. I remember that the first listing I printed advertised 'Frank Chickens' appearing in the basement. Also, I was taught offset-litho by 'Salad Average'. Do you remember her, by any chance? I'm sure you can't have forgotten her - puce from head to foot! The first listing I ever printed was done in puce ink too.

I'm wallowing in nostalgia here - I just wondered if you could remember when Salad started work in the Print shop and maybe when Frank Chickens graced the Centre?

I even had a couple of 'We're One (My Friend's One too)' T-shirts from the Centre. Did YOU design and print those too! Took me ages to work out what they meant (I wasn't there for the 1st birthday celebrations) - but I loved 'em!

Hope you have some further memories to share...

Corrupt Page?

Hi AlisonW, I keep a page with a catalogue of the map templates I've edited here to check back up on them in the future. I recently broke the page down into several different pages because it was taking too long to load. However, when I created the 3rd page it came up with the warning 'Wikimedia Error', so I went back to the main page to copy the list and have another go. However, I had already changed the page and had to go into the page history. However, every time I opened the correct revision it came up with the same message: 'Wikimedia Error' and then went on to say that if you reported this to an administrator you should include the following details: Request: GET http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:WVRMad/Maps&oldid=354755736, from 88.97.46.101 via amssq39.esams.wikimedia.org (squid/2.7.STABLE7) to 91.198.174.33 (91.198.174.33) Error: ERR_READ_TIMEOUT, errno [No Error] at Fri, 15 Oct 2010 16:08:46 GMT. This is one I copied from a couple of days ago when the problem started. I at first presumed the servers were too busy, but it hasn't improved for a couple of days. I was wondering if you knew what was going on, as you seem to be quite an expert on route diagrams and have several large pages with icons on - have you had a similar problem before?

The Reuters] report I've seen uses the present tense to talk about her and says nothing of her death. Of course hospital staff are bound to tell immediate family first, so I wouldn't expect announcement of her death (if she has died) so soon. Rkitko ^(talk) 19:03, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

The sole content of that page was "Ph.D. advisor of William Thurston." with no further information nor links. As such it was marked for deletion by another editor and I concurred. Stapleford railway station

Hi, re this edit - how would the trains do that? It would have required a north-to-east curve at Hertford, something that I can't find on old maps (either O.S., or of a railway nature). --Redrose64 (talk) 21:09, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

I replaced it on the grounds that it is stated as having been there on the related article(s). I hadn't (yet - will now!) confirmed the other entry was correct in itself, though it appears to be. Before getting to my own map sets I looked online and found this which has some useful stuff and mentions a triangular junction or two, though I'm not sure if the right one. The 1914 and 1935 maps would appear to be the relevant ones and possibly point in the wrong direction. Clearly more research is needed to get the three articles into a state of agreeing with each other! --AlisonW (talk) 00:47, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

The triangular junction mentioned was to have been on the GNR main line (apparently at Digswell, which is the location of the present-day Welwyn North), some 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the west of Hertford. Disused-stations also states that the junction was never built. It also states that the link between Hertford Cowbridge and Hertford East "was never used by passenger trains".

One possible source of confusion is that there have been two stations named Hertford North - the present Hertford North station is on the north-south line through Stapleford, whereas the previous Hertford North station, which was known earlier in its life as Hertford Cowbridge was the eastern terminus of the branch from Welwyn Garden City. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:17, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't know how I did it, but I've managed to create my very first .svg rail icon (ok, I cheated a bit by copying from an existing one). Basically, it's with junctions at NW, NE and SE corners. It's ready to upload, but I don't know what to call it. Mjroots (talk) 15:11, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

On the 25th of June 2011 following a leaked internal document from CCP Games a large majority of players in EVE Online began mass protests around New Eden in revelation of the micro-transaction model that CCP Games is considering to adopt.^[1] Protests erupted in major trade hubs around New Eden including Jita and Dodixie and other systems including Amarr and Rens, CCP Games later released a public apology concerning the protests in an attempt to calm matters down.^[2] The player population in Jita climbed to over 2000 with many of the pilots expressing their anger by attacking the Jita War Memorial and littering the area around the space station with cargo containers.^[3][4] Since the apology CCP Games has not released any other official documents or forum posts concerning the issue, but have had CONCORD intervene in matters that have gotten violent.

Thank you for this and especially the links. Whilst the links which are solely to player-written content are not usable as citable references (anyone being able to post to the EVE boards just about whatever they feel) those from CCP staff clearly are and can be confirmed as such. When I was last in game a few days ago there didn't seem to be so many complaints but some of what you have linked to suggests that a paragraph on the response of some players to the new content would be appropriate. MSU Interview

Dear AlisonW,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. East India (and other DLR stations)

Hi, I noticed that in 2008 you added that a planned name for East India before the station got built was Brunswick Wharf. I was wondering if you had the full citation for that and any other DLR station. If so, could you add the names directly to List of Docklands Light Railway stations#List? (talk page stalker) You could use {{BS-colspan}}, which is used in a somewhat curious manner - it doesn't take parameters, instead you put it on a row of its own, with the text afterwards. This text may be spread over multiple lines, but such line breaks are ignored and the text will be run together onto one line, unless you use explicit <br /> tags to force line breaks. Hi Alison I added the final sentence to the Friends Life article mentioning the Channel 4 documentary the other day, but have become more aware of the complexity of the 'war' you mention. I am still learning about Wikepedia and was glad that you had suspended editing for the reasons you have, but would actually like to remove the sentence that I added. Help in stopping a serial spammer

On the talk page of the transport related page - ER200 - an anonymous person (or persons) keeps putting in entries that are complete garbled rubbish other than occasional links to external sites that I assume are intended to sell something. For obvious reasons I have not clicked on the links. While I know you don't normally delete entries on talk pages, I thought it wise to delete these entries given they may link to inappropriate sites. However, the anonymous person (or persons) keeps putting in new entries (see history for the talk page). Is there anything that can be done to stop this behaviour. It seems that the anonymous person (or persons) keeps using different ISPs and doesn't go to any other Wikipedia page.

Help with rail icons, mixed colours?

Hi Alison,

Working on this article- Dry Creek – Port Adelaide railway

Three turnouts/points are incorrect, but I can't find appropriate replacements.

• 1st is below Russel St, where I want faded blue on the vertical, and solid red on the curve
• 2nd is below Ethelton, where I want faded blue on the vertical, and solid red on the curve
• 3rd is above Penrice Soda, where I want solid blue on the straight, and solid red on the curve

Deletion of “MaxTV – Telling It Like It Is” article.

Dear AllisonW, could you please intervene in the deletion of an article MaxTV – Telling It Like It Is by ATinySliver (talk · contribs) . This deletion resulted in 1500 Facebook likes in protest of the deletion by the Polish community in Poland. MaxTV on YT has a combined number of 700 000 subscribers and per wiki rules par excellence deserves a separate article. The deleted article was well referenced - the deletion process was not proper. When public outcry ensued, a Facebook fan site of Max Kolonko– founder of MaxTV ( 460 000 likes ) operated by a user in Poland, protested the deletion in a FB post. ATinySliver (talk · contribs) (which deleted the article) In her talk page called Max Kolonko– a “pseudo-journalist”, blames him for the FB post about her own actions and her rants on talk page insult a public figure whose biography and accomplishments she now edits. ATinySliver (talk · contribs) has also revealed on her talk page personal information about users who opposed the deletion for which she was reprimanded by an administrator and warned about being banned from Wikipedia. User’s bias is obvious. The user obviously doesn’t know Polish language in which many of the sources to the article were provided therefore she deletes instead of edits. It is my belief that the user should be banned from wiki community and/or definitely banned from further editing of articles related to Max Kolonko– since she’s now not impartial to the subject she edits. Please help to restore the article so that wiki users could provide their contributions to the subject. My reading of comments in Polish on FB indicate that people’s attempts to create a new MaxTV article are promptly blocked or deleted from Wikipedia. Please help. Women's Equality Party

Hi Alison. Thanks for creating the Women's Equality Party article. You might have seen that I'd added some references to the party on the Sandi Toksvig page. I was thinking about setting up an article on the party, but wasn't sure what the relevant notability guidelines were for political party articles. Anyway, they seem to be getting quite a bit of media coverage, so hopefully that establishes notability. I'll try to help out with the development of the article if I can. One issue that springs to mind is whether the article should be moved to Women's Equality Party (UK), as there appears to be a US party with the same name. I tend to the view that as there isn't an existing article of a particular name then it is wrong to 'sub-define' it, plus the press and media coverage has been substantial for the UK Party so that is the clear 'leader' in such stakes (for the moment, at least).
