Block

Hi, on Oct. 6, 2020, I was blocked for one week by @Elcobbola: for one week. One week later, I'm still blocked for some reason. (On Wikimedia Commons). Could you possibly unblock me, or try to contact that user? Thank you. Tym2412 (talk) 21:10, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Tym2412, I don't see any evidence that you are currently or have ever been blocked. For one thing, you're able to edit my talk page, which a blocked user wouldn't be able to. Were you told you couldn't edit a specific page? If so, maybe you're trying to edit a page that's extended confirmed protected? Or were you unable to edit any page from a specific place, in which case you might have been hitting an IP address block? I'm happy to look into this further for you, but I'm not an admin and can't unblock you directly. Alex Cohn (let's chat!) 22:14, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Tym2412, I didn't check Commons - you're writing on my English Wikipedia page and I missed your mention of Commons, so I assumed you were talking about something here. Your Commons block appears to have expired now, so you should be able to edit there again.

I'd strongly caution you to be especially careful about licensing status for images you upload in the future. Even if well-intentioned, uploading copyrighted images that are not available under free licenses creates a lot of work for other editors, and can open Commons to legal threats. Please make sure you're only uploading content from free sources. Everyone makes mistakes, but administrators are much more likely to be tolerant if you show you're learning from them: I'd strongly recommend you go through each of the files you uploaded that were deleted and figure out why (there's a list on your Commons talk page). I'm happy to review anything you'd like before you upload it, if you'd like a yes/no with an explanation why. Hope that helps. Alex Cohn (let's chat!) 03:16, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Alex Cohn, Thank you so much. I do have a question about C-SPAN? Wouldn't anything from C-SPAN be public domain? It is very hard to find free photos of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to be honest.

CSPAN is...complicated. It's not a US Government entity, but rather a private nonprofit organization that was created by cable companies, so the standard USGov copyright tags don't apply. A small fraction of their content is public domain - primarily video of debates in the chambers of the House and Senate, but if I remember correctly not debates in committee meetings. Most of it is not, even though it's covering US Government events. See their copyright policy for more info; they don't allow commercial use for content they own, which makes it incompatible with Commons. For video or stills from the House or Senate floor, you can use the Commons license template {{PD-CSPAN}}.

Again, I implore you to be more careful with uploads in the future: if you're told that something you uploaded was a copyright violation, please seek to understand why; feel free to ask the flagging user if you're not sure. Users who repeatedly upload content that violates others' copyrights after being warned are often blocked indefinitely, and I want you to have a successful and productive time on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. That image was already on Commons at File:2019 Inauguration of Governor Tom Wolf and Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman (32880102438).jpg - you probably didn't get a warning when uploading it because you grabbed the "X-Large" version from Flickr, not the "Original". Commons prefers originals, especially of jpeg images, because of generation loss. Alex Cohn (let's chat!) 22:13, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I am wondering how to make a category on commons of people by year. Like, for categories. There are photos of AOC that are from 2020 that have no place to go.
