New 10,000 Challenge for Canada
Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Cheers. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:55, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Provinces
Thanks for adding provinces to Canadian cities on hundreds of articles! Keep up the good work! Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 14:28, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

- As shown by previous decisions by 3rd-party editors, I think you are wrong. The use of AWB is governed by discussions and non-controversial edits. That is all I am trying to do. Sorry you think otherwise. Alaney2k (talk) 05:25, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- Well, hold on here... the text I'm seeing for the last bunch is based on a portion of the MOS that says the previous way was correct, i.e. it is unnecessary to link to Toronto, Ontario, Canada when just Toronto, Canada or even Toronto alone will do. My 5¢. - Floydian

- I did not write that section of the wp:mos. I'm not sure what point you are making, are you saying that you think it is wrong to use the province? We do use the provinces as part of the locations in Canada, same as locations in the US use the state. Alaney2k (talk) 13:45, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- On the front page of WP:AWB it says that there should be "demonstrable consensus" for making mass changes – demonstrable meaning "clearly apparent". The discussions I've read about this change being made didn't seem to have that high level of consensus I would have thought would be required here. The conversations were on forums related to Canada related articles, not Wikipedia as a whole, am I correct? Air.light (talk) 07:47, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Your opinion
I noticed that you are a frequent editor of the various Godzilla pages. I was wondering if you wanted to give your "2 cents" on an issue. There is this one editor who's listing every US poster of the various Godzilla film pages for deletion here Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2017 January 27. There are 18! film posters listed from Ghidorah to Space Amoeba (sections 72 through 88). So since you are an editor on these pages like myself and the person in question, I was wondering if you wanted to chime in. Keep, delete, or no opinion.Giantdevilfish (talk) 14:47, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Changes/expand on the MUTO article?
I've noticed you've contributed to the MUTO article in the past. Given that the MonsterVerse is officially a thing now and the MUTO's from Godzilla 2014 aren't the only MUTO's in that universe, should we expand the MUTO article by adding MUTO's from Kong: Skull Island? You know, should we make the article reference all the MUTO's in the MonsterVerse so far rather than just have it be a character page exclusively for the 2014 MUTO's? What are your thoughts? Armegon (talk) 20:37, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Armegon: I don't know. I think at some point, a "list of" article should be done. The MUTO article looks pretty good right now. The new monsters might be only minor characters. We could start a section in the MonsterVerse article and see if we have content to expand into another article or work on a merge. I've made a navbox for MonsterVerse and start linking these things together. Alaney2k (talk) 15:02, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- You're probably right. Right now there's not enough information to expand the MUTO article. Although, I think a "list of MUTO's" for the MonsterVerse article might be beneficial.Armegon (talk) 05:23, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Wayne Thomas, Hockey Player/Coach/Manager
New account user on Wikipedia. Could you let me know what you think about adding the following in some form to Wayne Thomas, hockey player/coach/manager? Looking for guidance. Thank you.
Robert Wayne Thomas born October 9, 1947, in Ottawa, Ontario, is a former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers. After 45 consecutive years in professional hockey as a player, coach, and team executive, Thomas retired from the NHL in July, 2015.
Playing Career: Prior to his professional career, he played his last amateur hockey for the University of Wisconsin under the late Bob Johnson. There he played two years of varsity hockey, culminating in the team's first appearance in the Frozen Four in Lake Placid, NY in 1970. He left Wisconsin to play professionally after his Junior year of college. Thomas played parts of 3 years in the Montreal Canadiens' minor league system, winning the American Hockey League championship trophy, The Calder Cup, in 1972 with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. The following year he played 6 games for the Voyageurs before playing his first NHL game with the Canadiens when he recorded a shutout against the Vancouver Canucks. He recorded an 8-1 regular season record, but did not play during the playoffs as the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. After 3 seasons in Montreal he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in June of 1975 for a first round draft pick. During his two years in Toronto he was selected to play in the 1976 All Star game and recorded the win. Following his 2 years in Toronto he concluded his playing career with the New York Rangers in 1981.
Coaching and Executive Career: After retiring as a player, he was hired by New York Rangers GM Craig Patrick and Head Coach Herb Brooks as one of the first goaltending coaches in professional hockey. Brooks changed his role to assistant coach with emphasis on goaltending in the beginning of the 1982 season. He remained in that position with the Rangers until the end of the 84-85 season. Thomas then became the head coach of the Interntional League Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1985 where he spent two seasons. In his second year in Salt Lake City, the Golden Eagles won the IHL Turner Cup Championship and Thomas was awarded the Commissioner's Trophy as the IHL Coach of the Year. In 1986 he returned to the NHL as assistant coach of the Chicago Blackhawks for one season. The following season he was hired by the St. Louis Blues as their minor league head coach of the IHL Peoria Rivermen. In 1991, the Blues brought him to St. Louis as an assistant coach to Head Coach Brian Sutter. His area of concentration was goaltending. In 1993, Thomas left the Blues to become Assistant to the General Manager and Assistant Coach with the San Jose Sharks. He remained in that role until being named Assistant General Manager during the 1995-1996 season. He was named Vice President of the Sharks in 2001. He remained Vice President and Assistant General Manager until his retirement in 2015.
Personal Life: Thomas has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin. Wayne and his wife, Barb, have 2 daughters, Gretchen Thomas Kane(Tim) and Abra Thomas Larson (Hans) and 3 grandchildren, Erik Larson, Elsje Larson, and Harrison Kane. MonsterVerse template
Navigation template should only include full articles because they exist to be bidirectional. Therefore they should not include redirects and no links to sections becuse they can't fill out the link in the template. The template should be placed in the article and therefore black out the link, which gives the reader context when looking at it. There also shouldn't be two links to the same article, the article you link to is a redirect to an article which is already in the template, therefore utterly useless and unneeded in the template.★Trekker (talk) 14:48, 15 March 2017 (UTC) See here

Request for help
I see that in the past you have helped with the Ellis Paul article. I am trying to resolve a dispute regarding the article and am hoping you will lend support on the Talk:Ellis Paul page by offering a Third Party Opinion. In a nutshell, another editor removed a sound sample box that has been part of the article for 10 years. I would like to have a consensus to be able to add the sound sample back. I would appreciate your support. Thank you for your time and consideration. Kmzundel (talk) 11:56, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Amalgamated Transit Union, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Halifax. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

IP left a message on your main userpage
Hi, just a random Wikipedian passing through. It looks like an unregistered editor mistakenly left a message intended for your talk page on your main userpage. It seems the system does not ping us when our main pages are edited as I've had a few third-party edits made to mine and never knew about them till just now (I checked my userpage's edit history after I noticed yours), and I'm especially curious because this person dropped by way back in November - in fact this edit is the most recent one made to your page. Old game summaries
Hey Alaney2k! I was just fixing an oversight over at the List of Stanley Cup champions, and was hoping for some assistance. I know you've worked with these old newspaper articles in the past. How does one read that scoring summary exactly? The order is fine but the times make no sense. Any ideas? Also, I don't know if you have time for such a project, but using these newspaper summaries it would be great to modernize those old Stanley Cup articles, especially when it comes to scoring, etc. I may do a few to test it out later. Jmj713 (talk) 21:41, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Jmj713: The times are intervals. If the first goal was 11 minutes in and the second at 13 minutes in, they used to mark that as 11 minutes, then 2 minutes. It probably is time to go over the old articles again. I've worked on a lot of articles since then. There is a group at Yahoo known as the "summary project" that has been putting old summaries into electronic form. I've not looked into in a while. Their intention was to get every last NHL summary entered. They are probably done by now. You have to be a Yahoo user and a member of the group. I think there was some interest in bringing their work under the SIHR umbrella, but I've not followed up. Alaney2k (talk) 04:17, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, that makes sense. Weird. If you could get the information from the project (and hopefully it's pre-NHL games too), that would be great. I would be happy to assist. I was just going to go via the newspaper archives, old-school. But if the data is already readily available, great! Jmj713 (talk) 19:30, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Editing News #1—2017
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.
Recent changes
A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.
A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]
The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references />
block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]
Other changes:
- You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
- The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
- The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
- You can now create
<chem>
tags (sometimes used as<ce>
) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7] - Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
- The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
- A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
- There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations:
Control
+Shift
+K
on a PC, orCommand
+Shift
+K
on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which isControl
+K
on a PC orCommand
+K
on a Mac. [11]
Future changes
- The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of
<ref>
tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12] - The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding
&ooui=1
to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [13] - The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

Marie-Claude Asselin
Hi,
This edit by an IP claiming to be the Marie-Claude Asselin of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada indicates that she is not the same person as the skier. I checked for any bios that would indicate the to are the same person, and am unable to find any bios in reliable sources that identify the Asselin of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada as the skier. The only ones that make that claim are wikipedia mirrors. Did you have any information that led you to adding this info in the article on Marie-Claude Asselin? -- Whpq (talk) 21:41, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- Wow, I'm not sure. I'm certain that I found a source, but it must have been in error or I was confused. Then used the SDRCC ref, because I thought that was the right one to use. Right now, I can't find anything. Well, it's best left out of the article, definitely. Alaney2k (talk) 22:05, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- The source you used in the article was dead when I tried but the wayback machine has it archived. The brief bio there doesn't make any mention of being a skier. At this point, it's best to leave it. I'll also post a note on the talk page. Thanks for responding so quickly. -- Whpq (talk) 22:36, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Watanabe in King of the Monsters?
I'm glad you've brought this up 'cause I've been considering bringing this up on the MonsterVerse talk page. The first mention of Watanabe being attached to King of The Monsters was on this article where it says that Watanabe is likely to return but after that, all sources now claim that Watanabe is part of the cast, even though there has been no outright confirmation stating Watanabe has signed on. I don't doubt that he'll come back but we do need a source that undisputedly 100% confirms that he has indeed signed on for the sequel, otherwise it would fall under WP:BALL. Any reply from Dougherty regarding Watanabe? Armegon (talk) 04:18, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

NFCC violations
Please stop restoring NFCC violations. Describing an image as "historic", or saying that an image illustrates a historic event, is nowhere near a sufficient justification for using a nonfree image. Nonfree content policy requires that use of an image "would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding". In addition, newspaper front pages and headlines are primarily textual, and in most cases their import can be adequately expressed in text alone. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. (talk) 00:01, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Hullaballoo Wolfowitz: These pictures have been on Wikipedia for years. I'm willing to listen to a 3rd opinion. How about you? Alaney2k (talk) 04:10, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- There's no grandfather clause for NFCC violations, snd you're not making any argument based in policyt or guideline. There's no dispute that these are nonfree images and you're providing no argument that they meet policy requirements. These are obvious violations that must be removed on sight. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. (talk) 10:55, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Hullaballoo Wolfowitz: Then why are you unwilling to have a 3rd opinion? You are the one who has started this edit war. I am going to go ahead and request a 3rd opinion. I would ask that you respect the process and allow the images to stay in place until it is done. Alaney2k (talk) 13:01, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Hullaballoo Wolfowitz: I have restored the images and made a 3rd party request at Wikipedia:Third opinion. I am able to hand-draw a facsimile of one of the maps you have deleted. I did one and will do the other. Alaney2k (talk) 13:13, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Hullaballoo Wolfowitz: I have also provide topics on the talk pages of the articles in question. Please contribute. I sincerely think these pass. Alaney2k (talk) 13:34, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
- What you "think" is not important. You have made no attempt whatever to justify inclusion of the images under the nonfree use policy and guidelines, and you have not denied that the use rationales are invalid. Nonfree content policy provides that it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale. It is certainly not appropriate to restore images with patently invalid rationales in the hope that a third party might provide one. Stop now. Your actions are disruptive. There's no dispute that these are nonfree images and you're providing no argument that they meet policy requirements. These are obvious violations that must be removed on sight. Regarding your question, as Masem said, if something depicted within a photo is the subject of the Wikipedia article (such as the actual newspaper article), then the photo would be appropriate. I'm not clear how your examples fit this. isaacl (talk) 04:19, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Julie Roy
Sorry, which reference verifies your addition that Julie Roy was born in 1985, or that she is from Bathhurst? Because IMDb -- while not always reliable -- has her as born in Montreal in 1973 and I'm inclined to go with that, unless you have a source that says otherwise. AWB - cities and super-city items
I'm concerned with this edit for two reasons: One is WP:NOTBROKEN and the other is WP:SEAOFBLUE. Maybe you should cease such edits since they do not immediately appear to be in accord with current MOS guidelines. --Izno (talk) 13:02, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Izno: What part of MoS? I have had opposing opinions on this. That's why I've been doing them. I was creating Toronto, Ontario wlinks and I was told to use the "two" wlinks instead. I think I probably just had a brain cramp on the article in particular anyway. Alaney2k (talk) 14:39, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Citation question
How do I get the book to highlight when I click on the authors name? I just put up some citations from Ryfle's and Ed.G's new Ishiro Honda book on the King Kong vs Godzilla page but when you click on the citations (#12 and #14) it won't highlight the book in the Bibliography section. I remember you organized the citations on that page that way awhile back so that's why I'm asking.Giantdevilfish (talk) 13:52, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

Toronto (/təˈrɒntoʊ/ , locally /təˈrɒnoʊ/ ) is the capital city of the Canadian province of Ontario. It is located within the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. With 2,731,571 residents in 2016, it is the largest city in Canada and fourth-largest city in North America by population. Also in 2016, the Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA), the majority of which is within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), had a population of 5,928,040, making it Canada’s most populous CMA. A global city, Toronto is a centre of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.
Toronto Demographics
Hey, how's it going? Thanks for your updates to the demographics section on the Toronto main page. I noticed you removed the table, which would probably be better off in Demographics of Toronto, however I'm conflicted with the info as in the Demographics page it's all over the place whether we're stating Toronto proper or the Greater Toronto Area CMA. At the moment the page should almost be called Demographics of the Greater Toronto Area. I think having some stats on the GTA would be helpful, but it shouldn't replace stats for Toronto proper - perhaps each have sections. Do you think you'll be shifting work to that page soon? I'll gladly help once we know what info should be present. Regards, Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 18:45, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Vaselineeeeeeee: I have not looked that deeply on the Demographics page yet. I was more or less trying to limit the main page section to a summary. Maybe a discussion on the talk page should be started first. Alaney2k (talk) 18:55, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, I left a message there a couple days ago about GTA vs Toronto with no response. Maybe I'll try again. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 19:02, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Wannabe
Hi. I saw your edit to [{Wannabe]] where you added Ontario after Toronto and cited WP:CANPLACE. However, that MoS guideline states that it only applies to Canadian-related articles. "Wannabe" isn't a Canadian topic. I don't really believe any reader outside of Canada (or even within Canada) would be particularly confused about which Toronto we're referring to, so I suppose it's fine to change Canadian topics to this but it doesn't appear to be a requirement or recommendation outside of that scope. Rob Ford
It seems you have an axe to grind against Rob Ford. Why do you feel that 99% of the article needs to be about his addictions? The length of the content you are trying to add is problematic. You don't need to copy and paste 3 paragraphs, for each incident, detailing every intricate detail. You can add other incidences not already covered in the article, but leave out the weasel words and keep it brief. Editors can always click on the link if they want to read the entire article.2607:F2C0:95F1:E900:3DB6:5B84:5DC5:634A (talk) 04:47, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

- Just discuss at the ford talk page what is wrong. I have responded there. Ford's incidents were and are shocking for a public official. We should not 'smooth them over'. I am completely open to suggestion. Alaney2k (talk) 05:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Canadian place names
I notice you are doing a lot of Canadian place name edits. Can you direct me to that manual of style?
I'm concerned that a few of the edits are linking to redirects as opposed to articles. For example:
- Montreal, Quebec vs Montreal, Quebec
Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 19:07, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Flibirigit: WP:CANPLACE. There was a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Canadian_Wikipedians'_notice_board/Archive_23#Switching_Canada_links_to_Canadians_links, and another one about using provinces more. I think it was in that archive also. I was putting links like Toronto, Ontario and I got a complaint about that, but I've not got a complaint about using the redirects, though I would prefer what I was doing before. Alaney2k (talk) 19:29, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
- I think the issue might be that some cities have an article name such as Montreal, whereas other cities have a name like Victoria, British Columbia. Automated programs can't seem to tell that both are correct. Flibirigit (talk) 20:09, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
- Flibirigit asked me to comment here, although I'm not using automated programs so can't comment on that aspect. Either Toronto, Ontario or Toronto, Ontario is AFAIK acceptable under the Manual of Style. However, Toronto, Ontario is problematic per MOS:LINK because it presents two links in such a way that they appear to be a single link, which is potentially confusing. Nikkimaria (talk) 21:33, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

- Interesting point of view regarding two links appearing to be one. Flibirigit (talk) 01:32, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
I came here regarding the same issue. WP:CANPLACE explicitly states, "unless the article text or title has already established that the subject is Canadian, e.g., it is not necessary to identify the "Parliament of Canada" as being located in "Ottawa, Ontario, Canada"." In many of these articles, it's already established the subject is Canadian. The changes you are making to some of them are not in compliance with the policy you're citing. Mkdw talk 04:38, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
- I leave out Canada in those cases. Alaney2k (talk) 04:43, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Ottawa Lansdowne Park Mixed Use Area Proposal.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Ottawa Lansdowne Park Mixed Use Area Proposal.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text

below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. LABcrabs (talk) 09:25, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Searching for hockey references
A long time ago, you edited Cosby Cup, using this book as a reference:
-
Is there any chance you still have access to that book? Flibirigit (talk) 13:17, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
@Flibirigit: No, I don't have a copy. I can get it out of the library today, though. I am passing that way. Alaney2k (talk) 13:41, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- If you could, please do. I'm looking for more information on the older trophies, such as the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the George Richardson Memorial Trophy. Some of the present information on Wikipedia is not adding up. Flibirigit (talk) 14:00, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Flibirigit: I have the book. I see that there are -three- Robertson Cup trophies, but only one article on Wikipedia. We should probably decide what to do, or put it to wp:hockey. Alaney2k (talk) 16:20, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- I'm happy to know I wasn't crazy. There should be three; one for Senior, the second for Intermediate hockey, and the third for Junior hockey. The two lesser known trophies, are mentioned in their respective league articles. Do you have starting or foundation dates for the three trophies? Flibirigit (talk) 19:07, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Re: your edits of "publisher=" vs "work="
You recently changed a cite web reference from "publisher=" to "work=" with this edit with the edit summary of (publisher = > work (see citation doc), replaced: publisher=The Hollywood Reporter → work=The Hollywood Reporter (2) using AWB). I agree that the terms publisher and work - though often confused together - are not synonymous. For my own curiosity and to learn the why/wherefore, if you could post here the direct link to the doc you mention that would be helpful (mostly because "work=" as a parameter is not used by the 'cite web' template though I did find a related reference to the term in 'cite news' & I'm just curious). I suppose that technically the publisher of The Hollywood Reporter is Eldridge Industries?... Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:15, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Shearonink: I have been following the Template:Citation doc, which is what cite web, etc. redirect to. Publisher is the company, while work=, or website=, or journal apply to the work in question. Work is sort of a grab-all. I see it being used, but perhaps The Hollywood Reporter could be journal= too. Alaney2k (talk) 01:38, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with your edits, and I sometimes fix this issue, too. However, my watchlist apparently has a lot of articles with this problem. I'd personally suggest that this is a mostly-cosmetic issue not really worth fixing with automated tools. But if you disagree, that's alright... just might want to focus on an error that's actually breaking citation templates, like an invalid date format – those cause a big red error message to pop up. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 00:16, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
- @NinjaRobotPirate: I started out just fixing the title of the work, but then I saw the use of publisher was widespread... I would be happy to jump on those errors. Anyway is there a way to find invalid dates using AWB? I know there is regex capability, but I've not really jumped into trying that. There are several regex formats, and most are complicated. Do invalid dates cause a category to be set on an article? Alaney2k (talk) 15:52, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- This won't help you in an automated fashion but if you add
importScript('User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources.js'); // User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources.js
to your custom javascript page it will give you a link on your left hand toolbar that fixes many types of reference errors. But as mentioned it doesn't search out the errors for you, its really just for the pages you are on. I personally try to think to do it each time I am on a page, and once in a blue moon I just hit random pages and fix what I find. -DJSasso (talk) 16:46, 22 January 2018 (UTC)- I'm not sure, but I think most citation errors get dumped into Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting. I've never used AWB, so this isn't something that I've explored in depth. It does make me wonder if maybe someone converted Ohconfucius's above script into something you could run in AWB. I'm not sure who you'd ask about that. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 21:58, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

I noticed you have changed a lot of occurrences of Canadian to Canadian which goes against the guidelines in WP:NOTBROKEN and MOS:NOPIPE Spike 'em (talk) 09:16, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes. Although I would say the link is sort of broken. I have been changing things like Canadian to [Canadian, Canadian company to Canadian. There is a discussion of the first in this discussion and the second is a simple correction. If I get the Canadian wlinks to Canadians, then we can keep the above errors out of Wikipedia, because we can spot wlinks to Canadian as errors. The Canadian page should probably be a disambiguation page. Alaney2k (talk) 13:44, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- I think the change on the page I saw (Blue (university sport)) was the wrong way, and should have been to Canadian. I've changed that one and am still not convinced that the overall migration from Canadian to Canadians|Canadian is really called for until the disambiguation issue has been sorted. Spike 'em (talk) 17:16, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- I don't mind stopping the change of Canadian to Canadian if you think that's against the rules and should be discussed. You are the first to mention it on these terms. (Long story but not related). But we discussed changing Canadians to Canadian for people in the talk space for wp:canada and there was consensus this was better. There are times when I don't do that. E.g. Canadian troops is not best pointed to Canadians. BTW, you were right about Blue. That should be Canadian. I was wrong. Tired maybe I guess. Hi Alaney2k, I noticed you've edited the Dundas Real McCoys, Brantford Blast, Whitby Dunlops and Hamilton Steelhawks pages in the Allan Cup Hockey League, are you familiar with the other 2 teams that are missing? Stoney Creek Generals and Thorold Athletics - would you be able to contribute to their pages? Thanks a lot!

website -> work replacements
Hello, I saw your edits on pages such those from The Matrix series, where you did no more than replace "website" to "work". Would you bother explaining what your point in those edits is? "website" is the primary parameter, of which "work" is merely a synonym, why change a name ot its synonym? Lordtobi (✉) 18:11, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- To be consistent with the citing of the source in other articles. The Hollywood Reporter is a print magazine and website. Alaney2k (talk) 18:23, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- "Consistency" is not really a good reason when talking about random articles that are not interconnected, as the result is the exact same, except for three less characters in code; actually, quite the other way around, as you create inconsistency between the usage of "work" and "website" within an article. Furthermore you cite the website of The Hollywood Reported, so it is the website "The Hollywood Reported", why should that be wrong? And in the end, it just says "The Hollywood Reporter" anyways. Lordtobi (✉) 18:30, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- I`m not sure what your issue is. It seems like a "I don't like it". Alaney2k (talk) 18:44, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- Correct, I really do not like pointless edits done in a semi-automated manor that essentially do not change the article to the reader and only bump one's edit count. There is also WP:AWBRULES #4, "Do not make insignificant or inconsequential edits.", and the WP:MEATBOT guideline.
You haven't come up with any good arguments for why you are doing them either, and could only reply with "what is your issue?", which I actually already stated above (pointlessly changing a tag to the same tag with a different name).Lordtobi (✉) 19:00, 29 January 2018 (UTC)- Hmm. Thanks for pointing those out. I really didn't understand your objecting to my edits. I did not think either was wrong. You get caught up in something sometimes. I started out correcting cites of THR from "Hollywood Reporter" to "The Hollywood Reporter" (which is the publication title) and then got into making the cites consistent so that I could pick off similar errors more quickly in the future. I was thinking it might be useful in doing data searches in the future if this is significant. But it's true, the rendered output of a switch from website= to work= is not different. I'll certainly drop that. Again, thanks. Alaney2k (talk) 19:19, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- Well, considering you wanted to future-proof your editing, I can see where your side of the argument is coming from too. However, keep in mind that there are always subtle differences such as spaces inbetween code segments (
|website=
,| website=
,| website =
, etc.), and you cannot or just want to search and "fix" all of those (that would be exhausting). I also striked the last part of my previous response as it sound rather harsh, apologies for that. - On a side-note, if you are going to mass-fix THR (and similar) titles, are you using Regexes to make your life easier? E.g.
[(?<!The) Hollywood Reporter
→[The Hollywood Reporter
and ticking the box in the Regex column should, if I am not mistaken, fix missing The's inside links, and similar could be done for italics and whatnot. Lordtobi (✉) 19:40, 29 January 2018 (UTC)- You were right to point out my lack of justification. Sometimes I don't clue in right away. I can be overly literal. Sorry to have ticked you off. I have used regexes but they all seem to be subtly different so I sometimes just go for brute force. I have several rules in my AWB file. Alaney2k (talk) 20:24, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

- A number of your changes were incorrect of recent regarding publishers. [15] should not have changed IMDB to a website, as the work is already present (it's BOM). The Indiewire ref change in [16] was also incorrect. Please be more careful not to introduce these errors in the future. --Izno (talk) 16:03, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Michael Dunahee
Hi, Why did you add a link claiming that Michael Dunahee is alive, when he hasn't been seen since 1991? It would be nice if he was alive, but there is NO proof at all of that. Davidgoodheart (talk) 08:28, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Davidgoodheart: I think you have the wrong person. If someone did that, maybe there are some rules. I don't know. Alaney2k (talk) 16:50, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
Forked from where? Please see WP:Copying within Wikipedia; this needs to be given appropriate attribution. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 15:20, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
- I noted this on the second edit. From IIHF World Ranking. The article was over 100K in size. Alaney2k (talk) 16:00, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'm less interested in the reason, which I am sure was valid, than in the history (attribution). Thanks, Drmies (talk) 18:16, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Bones Allan ?
Hi,
You created the article Bones Allan and in 2008, you corrected Special:Diff/226247546 « allan, not allen » but apparently all the available references says Allen with an « e ».
Shouldn't we move this article to Bones Allen? (and maybe "Bones" Allen or Angus "Bones" Allen but here I'm not sure, Wikipedia:Article titles mention "Weird Al" Yankovic but it seems to be an exception).
Cdlt, VIGNERON * discut. 10:22, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- I went ahead and did the move to Bones Allen. Thanks for working on the article. Alaney2k (talk) 17:16, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Trophy links
I might hold off on changing all those links for trophies as you are probably editing against a common name. They are often referred to without the memorial in them in news articles. I think that would probably be the kind of thing you would need to discuss because its changing a lot of links on a lot of articles. It is not a huge deal but things that can be controversial like that shouldn't be done with AWB. -DJSasso (talk) 16:42, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- There are plenty of cases where I have piped it in the text. The succession boxes used Hart sometimes and Hart Memorial sometimes. (After it was renamed) Not many, and that should not be an issue. Mostly updated the wlinks, and only a fraction of the wlinks. Alaney2k (talk) 16:48, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah like I said, not a huge deal. Just saw a lot of them being changed in the middle of prose so thought I might mention it before someone got upset about it because common name would apply and WP:NOTBROKEN. -DJSasso (talk) 16:49, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- However, I would say that the article name for the Hart is supposed to be the common name. So using Hart Memorial Trophy is that. Alaney2k (talk) 17:00, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah I had been wondering if one or the other was clearly more common enough to switch the article name. Figured they were probably pretty close to tied but that is gut feel, I haven't checked. Either way its all good just saw enough changes to flood my watch list so thought I might mention it. Cool to see you editing hockey stuff a bit more again lately. :) -DJSasso (talk) 18:31, 22 February 2018 (UTC)

I disputed the removal of the russians in the statistical leaders because in the past the IIHF has not done this. However I know that you have a lot of experience in hockey editing so I opened a discussion about it because I realize that there may be other details that I am not aware of. The only time I can see that this has happened was the punch up in piestany when it was specifically included in the punishment. The curious thing about the 2014 tournament is that the IIHF has updated records and rankings, and left the russians as 6th.18abruce (talk) 16:29, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
- @18abruce: I don't know, I'd go on what we know until the IIHF clearly expresses otherwise. The 2014 is only a bit unprecedented. The whole team was disqualified, so although only six players were given bans, the whole team was nullified. So we could be a bit ahead of the official documentation, but we can update as more info is released. If they had won a medal, they would have had to return it, and give it to the next team. There are similar instances in the Olympic files. We have a reference that they were disqualified, that should be enough. The Hockey Hall of Fame web site has numerous errors, and we rely on other sources. I think you have to be accurate rather than rely on one website. Alaney2k (talk) 18:44, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
- I am not disputing that the 2014 team is DQ'd, it is just very odd what the IIHF has chosen to do. As for the player statistics I checked three different disqualified teams in the last ten years, each time the players stats remained, but how the game scores and other statistics were handled was inconsistent. I think it is too early to say what the full consequences really are.18abruce (talk) 03:19, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

- Additionally my compliments on how you modified the IIHF World Rankings documentation. I was wondering since the 2014 result should have been a DQ, and the rankings are still not modified by the IIHF, if you have an idea how to best express that.18abruce (talk) 16:36, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I think we should strike the graph, and put asterisks around the Russia ranking/points in the women's past rankings table. If the IIHF is not facing an appeal, then we should be able to do so based on what we do know. Alaney2k (talk) 18:44, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
- Finally, that article needs to put the long tables into a separate article. It is not formatted per Wiki standard. There should not be long stretches of tables, then prose, then tables, etc. The format should be prose, with some small tables and graphics, fine. But the long tables should be in another article or at the very end. Alaney2k (talk) 18:44, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
