"The Austin Daily"

[edit]

You must have gone to Decatur High. ;-) I went to Austin, and we always said just the opposite — that the Daily was biased towards Decatur High. That said, I'm not sure it's really appropriate to mention that in the Daily's article. I do admit it's possible that this has become a common view and saying since I graduated (in 1998); though as a lifelong reader of the Daily, I haven't noticed any change, and still see the opposite bias. I guess we see what we want to see. :-p —LonelyPilgrim 02:20, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, actually I still go to Decatur, but, hmm, I've never heard of the Decatur Daily being biased towards Decatur High. I guess it just seems that the paper is bias towards Austin cause it gave one paragraph to our marching band, and 6 to Austin's. (AlabamaGuy2007 09:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]
Well, that's because we're better. ;-p Are you a band person, too? Band bias was always something I was sensitive to, also. It seems like in athletics, the Daily favors whatever school is doing better in that particular year (which was almost always Decatur when I was in school), but band is so much more subjective. I remember one time being upset that the Decatur band got a full-page spread for its state contest superiors, without even any mention of ours. I was reading your Decatur High page today, and got a little indignant at first at the claim about the band having the state record for superiors. We were always told we had the state record. Then I read it more carefully, and checked my facts, and you're right. Decatur has the record for cumulative state superiors (54 total, I think), but Austin has the record for consecutive superiors (40 last year). And you're correct that Decatur has the record for consecutive district superiors. I was in band at Austin with Robbie Stout, BTW. And I actually worked at the Daily for a year, and can say with confidence that most of the apparent bias has more to do with who calls the reporters to be interviewed than with any prejudice on their part. They don't know things unless people tell them, and they don't go out of their way to interview people unless it's something really big. Most publicity has to be drummed up, and I guess the Austin band must just have a good publicist right now. BTW, I really appreciate all of the hard work you've put into articles about the North Alabama area. Keep up the good work. —LonelyPilgrim 05:58, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, yea I'm a band person, Stout's our band director, he's........interesting, to say the least. Yea, I shoulda put in the detail about the cumulative superior ratings, didn't think of that. Well, thank you for the compliment. AlabamaGuy2007 07:01, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Im a band member in Brewer High School's Band. I havent seen Decatur's band, but I have seen Austin, and they're really good (and huge!). They go to the Morgan County Night of Bands every year at Brewer.

Hi. Pontchartrain Rail-Road is also clearly west of the Appalachians, so I modified the claim. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 21:29, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Austin High School (Decatur, Alabama)

[edit]

Hello, I noticed that you have helped with the Decatur High School (Alabama) article, would you mind helping me with the Austin High School (Decatur, Alabama) article as well? I'm trying to expand it to the best of my abilities, but you apparently have a homefield advantage.  ;-) It has been nominated for deletion but I am confident that it will be kept since it is an International Baccalaureate school. Thanks, Silensor 19:24, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your earlier comments, would you happen to have reliable source that shows this school has a high ranking band program? I would like to incorporate that into the article as well. Silensor 20:05, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for the link to this page, I'm hoping to find an additional secondary source as well, if one can be dredged up. Silensor 08:16, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birmingham

[edit]

Do you not think you might have discussed your recent move of Birmingham to Birmingham, England before going ahead? Most people in the world think of Birmingham in the UK when "Birmingham" is mentioned, not "Birmingham, Alabama". There is therefore no need to disambiguate it in the way you have. Texas in the South

[edit]

Hi, I was just wondering what your opinion on Texas being part of the South is. There has been some debate about this; 86% of Texans consider themselves Southerners, and Texas was part of the Confederacy, but many non-Texans group Texas with the Southwest. If we can get the opinions of people from the Deep South about Texas, it would help. Thanks! --Stallions2010 19:41, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand why you ask that. I believe you are asking because of the talk page on the Decatur page. I said that people in Alabama do not consider most (land area) of Texas as Southern. I mean by that, pretty much everything west of Austin, and Abilene. And everything north of Abilene. If there is anything else that I might have said that needs more clarification, please just say so. :~) I'd be happy to help. The opinions I have just expressed are pretty much what everyone else in the Decatur area thinks, so, that's what goes on the web pages.
Or, if that's not what you were talken about here's a an explanation. I don't know much about population distibution of Texas but, I'd say that what's west and north of those cities (Austin, and Abilene) is pretty much the remaining 12%. I do consider parts of Texas southern, I have family in FW. I consider San Antonio kinda western, but also kinda southern, it's hard to say. AlaGuy 04:46, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't referring to the talk on the Decatur page, but thanks for your help. Fort Worth is a great town...I'd say one of the most Southern in the state. Houston is very Southern indeed. As for Dallas...it's a bit Southern, but more of a modern city. You're right, most of the Texan population is concentrated in the areas Alabamians consider to be Southern. Thanks again for your opinion! --Stallions2010 22:55, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SEC National Championships

[edit]

Hi, I understand that Alabama and Arkansas shared the National Championship in 1964, but since Arkansas was not in the SEC at that time, shouldn't they be removed from this list? It's a list of championships won by the SEC and this is a championship won by the SWC.76.18.100.128 02:53, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing vandalism

[edit]

FYI, you should probably use Undo when you revert vandalism. When you manually reverted here, you lost three entire sections that had been wiped out with this vandalism. They were gone until I happened to do a large diff four days later and noticed the missing sections. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 12:11, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New NRHP Collaboration Division

[edit]

Hey, saw you were a participant in the National Register of Historic Places WikiProject. I thought I would let you know that there is a new Collaboration Division up for the project. The goal of the division is to select an article or articles for improvement to Good article standard or higher. There is a simple nomination process, which you can check out on the division subpage, to make sure each candidate for collaboration has enough interested editors. This is a good way to get a lot of articles to a quality status quickly. Please consider participating. More details can be seen at the division subpage. IvoShandor 10:59, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gulf Coast article

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you went to some trouble to update the county populations along the Gulf in the Gulf Coast of the United States article, and removed the update template. But 1) you didn't provide any citation or reference; 2) you didn't update the metropolitan area populations, and they still need updating; and 3) someone removed the entire section on the counties in an edit on 27 April 2007. The article appears to be targeted for a lot of vandalism, and I can't determine if the removal of the section on counties was vandalism, because the person who removed it neither cited a reason in his edit summary nor made a note on the Talk page. Perhaps you would care to restore the data you had contributed? Thanks. Laura1822 02:23, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 02:31, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted in Troy, Alabama

[edit]

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian in Alabama. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Troy University, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

I know Alabama is a big state, but if you happen to live near Troy and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from Troy who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:29, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
