DYK for Silaum silaus
On 4 November 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Silaum silaus, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that despite having the common name pepper saxifrage, Silaum silaus (pictured) is neither a saxifrage nor tastes of pepper? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Silaum silaus. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. WHY did you mark my contribution for deletion?
You marked my article for deletion without any real need for doing so. It is so unwelcoming to find watch dogs are waiting to strike me down at the first contact. If you can provide your personal reasons for your actions then I can correct the article to meet wikipedia guidelines or decide not to contribute at all on this free service.
Herman Benjamin - Bollywood Choreographer and Dance Director This is a lesser known but creator of very popular Bollywood song numbers in the 1960's. The article has information on him and his work.
If you have clear reasons to strike down legitimate wikipedia entries, then provide clear reasons and how to correct them.

- Hi Sammybenjamin and first of all let me wish you a genuine and warm welcome to Wikipedia - I hope you like the place and decided to stay :) I like you am a volunteer, and I'm sorry if you felt upset or annoyed when I nominated your article for deletion. I nominated it for deletion as when you initially created it, the article failed the speedy deletion criteria, specifically criterion A7 where an article is created which doesn't assert the notability of it's subjects. I'm very pleased to see this has been addressed, and hope you will continue on with Wikipedia. If you have any questions please just ask here. Template:Did you know nominations/Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
For Template:Did you know nominations/Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, the reference reads, "This plant is known as the Christmas Kalanchoe because of their showy blooms in winter". I did not see flamboyant and colourful. Maybe adding this and this reference plus what is now in the article might be sufficient for the hook. -- Jreferee (talk) 18:05, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for spotting that - I've fixed it by citing another reference for that fact. I think I originally used the word 'flamboyant' as it is a good synonym of 'showy', which seemed to flow a bit better. The new ref I've cited seems to clear this up - though thanks again for pointing it out! :) Acather96 (click here to contact me) 21:20, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

- Well done, that's a nice new article - fascinating how much we still have to write about on the 'pedia. As for Christmas DYK's: I've got Luzula nivais and Kalanchoe blossfeldiana approvated, and if I get time before Christmas would quite like to write Luzula wahlenbergii (Reindeer wood-rush). I mainly edit and write species articles, so my first thought would be to look for Christmassy organisms. How about this list of species with the word Christmas in the name? Microtia elva a butterfly with the common name 'Elf'. There are over 25 different species of lichen called (in some form) Reindeer Lichen - no really, it's true. If species aren't your thing then Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 98#Christmas DYK Task Force Assemble! has a good list of suggestions. Enjoy :) Acather96 (click here to contact me) 22:06, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter • 19 December 2013
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some toolbar improvements, fixing bugs, and improving support for Indic languages as well as other languages with complex characters. The current focus is on improving the reference dialog and expanding the new character inserter tool.
There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:
- Rich copying and pasting is now available. If you copy text from another website, then character formatting and some other HTML attributes are preserved. This means, for example, that if you copy a pre-formatted suggested citation from a source like this, then VisualEditor will preserve the formatting of the title in the citation. Keep in mind that copying the formatting may include formatting that you don't want (like section headings). If you want to paste plain, unformatted text onto a page, then use Control+⇧ Shift+V or ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+V (Mac).
- Auto-numbered external links like [2] can now be edited just like any other link. However, they cannot be created in VisualEditor easily.
- Several changes to the toolbar and dialogs have been made, and more are on the way. The toolbar has been simplified with a new drop-down text styles menu and an "insert" menu. Your feedback on the toolbar is wanted here. The transclusion/template dialog has been simplified. If you have enabled mathematical formula editing, then the menu item is now called the formula editor instead of LaTeX.
- There is a new character inserter, which you can find in the new "insert" menu, with a capital Omega ("Ω"). It's a very basic set of characters. Your feedback on the character inserter is wanted here.
- Saving the page should seem faster by several seconds now.
- It is now possible to access VisualEditor by manually editing the URL, even if you are not logged in or have not opted in to VisualEditor normally. To do so, append
?veaction=edit
to the end of the page name. For example, changehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
tohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit
to open a random page in VisualEditor. This is intended to support bug testing across multiple browsers, without requiring editors to login repeatedly.
Looking ahead: The transclusion dialog will see further changes in the coming weeks, with a simple mode for single templates and an advanced mode for more complex transclusions. The new character formatting menu on the toolbar will get an arrow to show that it is a drop-down menu. The reference dialog will be improved, and the Reference item will become a button in the main toolbar, rather than an item in the Insert menu.
If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:39, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Notification of mention in a discussion
Greetings Acather96 I just wanted to let you know that I referenced your RFA in a discussion posting I just started at A perfect example of the RFA problem. I just wanted to let you know that although I opposed your RFA and I used you as an example I have absolutely no grudge with you and I think you appear to be a good editor. I wanted to let you know it wasn't anything personal towards you, just the situation that seems to apply. If it makes you feel any better a lot of folks will likely support your RFA on the sole basis I opposed it. Good luck on the RFA all the same. Happy Christmas and holidays. Kumioko (talk) 22:56, 25 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know Kumioko, I appreciate that. Whilst I disagree with some of the assertions you make about me, as there not actually on the RFA page, I'll wait till my RFA closes before responding - I think any discussion of my suitability for adminship should be kept to the RFA page, I don't want discussions to spiral out onto other pages. I do support a reform of RFA and I understand this in an area you have been working in/advocating for for a while now, so I see why you feel the neeed to 'call out' perceived unfairness. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you too! :) Acather96 (click here to contact me) 09:00, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
- No problem it looks like your RFA is going to be a landslide pass anyway. I'm planning on leaving the project after this month so its not going to affect me one way or the other. I have found a lot of projects who want and need help over at Wikia so I am going to edit there where my help is wanted frankly. Besides, I don't really think anyone seriously wants to reform RFA besides me anyway. They say they do but then they scuttle any attempts to do so. Since I am a non admin no one takes my desire for reform seriously, they just view it like I am just upset about not getting access to the tools myself so there is little point in continuing. Anyway good luck. Kumioko (talk) 16:36, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Yahya Bahro and "edit warring"
Yahya Bahro's actions are not really edit warring when multiple editors remove the material and few bother to warn on the editor's talk page. Editing against consensus is a problem. Thanks for leaving the editor a note though. This will hopefully give the editor cause for starting to discuss and cooperate. Walter Görlitz (talk) 23:54, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

About images of 3D art
Hello again! So I'm not that well acquainted with policy regarding copyrights. If you could please help clarify this for me... all images of 3D art cannot be considered free, even public art? I want to add a gallery to the Life Underground article, illustrating more of the installations. I noticed one of the existing images was uploaded as non-free, so I'm guessing adding more images would not acceptable per WP:NFCCP 3A? Note these are permanent installations commissioned by the MTA to be on display for the public. It's unclear why this would be considered copyrighted at all, as opposed to say, a temporary installation at the Guggenheim (paid entry). Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 18:10, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- @MusikAnimal: Unfortunately, the US does not have freedom of panorama that would allow for the non-infirngmenet of copyright when one is photographing a permanently present piece of public art (unless the sculpture was installed before 1923 or is a building). Is this silly and irritating? Yes. Do we still have to comply with it? Unfortunately, yes. I think the current number of images is sufficient for the article! Sorry I couldn't give you a nicer answer! :( Acather96 (click here to contact me) 22:19, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for the explanation. It is indeed irritating, but laws are laws! So alright, but what about two-dimensional art? Specifically, graffiti. Surely copyright laws cannot apply? I suppose it is inherently public art, but is generally illegal by nature. It's also usually applied to the sides of buildings, which as you say are an exception to the law, at least for 3D art. Which brings up the real doozy, what about 3D art that is still considered graffiti? Thanks again for all of your help! — MusikAnimal talk 05:36, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!
Hello Acather96, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Question
Hi, you recently blocked an editor (indef), and following that, another editor then created a user page for the blocked editor, solely for the purpose of adding the {{blocked user)} template, along with the somewhat smug edit summary "good bye". The template's guidelines state that that should be done by the blocking admin. I'm wondering if you have an opinion on this. Thanks - theWOLFchild 13:16, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- @Thewolfchild: Thanks for bringing this to my attention - yes, this is unnecessary and a little annoying to be honest. I see another user has already left a message on the editors talkpage, I'll leave another note in reinforcement on that. It's probably just an honest misunderstanding, but still worth nipping in the bud. Thanks, Acather96 (click here to contact me) 15:52, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Paid articles added by user BiH
Hi Doug,
I can see that BIH has created several spam and paid editing of following links. I have messaged you for same in the past and i believe that there is no fairness on wikipedia for this user. Why are you allowing him to create spammy pages offcourse for which he is paid thousands of dollars.

You closed numerous discussions as delete, but File:Dublincity crest.gif (and possibly other files) were never deleted. Could you take a look at this? Also, if the decision is to delete, but you don't wish to give any further rationale, then note that all you need to do is to delete the file; a bot will automatically close the discussion afterwards. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:38, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Acather! Thanks for pointing out the confusion with the hook. It was getting rather wordy (at 199 characters) and I was basically combining two facts (their location and their different breeding times) into one, making the hook borderline WP:OR. Accordingly, I've changed the hook based on your suggestion. Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 19:46, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
