Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 474th Air Expeditionary Group, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Army Air Corps. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Roadrunner patches

[edit]

Hey, I see last year you uploaded File:474th TFW Roadrunner Unofficial Patch.jpg and File:474th Tactical Fighter Wing F-111A Roadrunners Unofficial Patch.jpg under a claim that you're the copyright holder. Did you design the patch personally? If not, it's unlikely that you are the copyright holder, so the free-use license may be invalid. ♠PMC(talk) 02:39, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The unofficial logo of the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing has been in existence since the F-111A was introduced as the primary aircraft of the 474th in 1968. The original designer of the patch is unknown. I came into the 474th in September 1971. I have been working with Rick Sine, historian of the 474th, on the acquisition and development of all relevant documents related to the 474th and the F-111 in general. I also meet monthly with some of the survivors of the early wing, most of whom are in their mid to late 80s. We lose a member to natural causes approximately once a year, and the group is getting smaller. As part of the effort to correct the original version of this article and supplement it with detailed accurate information, we have sent links to the article to all known survivors of the the unit for their review, comments, and suggested changes. To date we have had nothing but positive responses and numerous suggestions for additions and corrections, but have been unable to find anyone who recall the original designer of the patch. That effort continues. My claim to copyright was not to the image but to the photograph of the image. I did not design the patch but did photograph one I own. This patch is widely available from multiple sources online and in manufacturers, none of whom maintain the copyright. I have several which I have bought from 4 different sources and two which were given to me when I became a member of the 474th. It would be unfortunate if this image was lost to the article, as it is an important part of its history. Please provide input to me as to how to address this problem short of deletion. Deletion would be an insult to the survivors of the valiant organization and those who were lost as part of the unit. Thank you. Aardvarkrocket (talk) 02:45, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:474th Tactical Fighter Wing F-111A Roadrunners Unofficial Patch.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unofficial patch, so it's not the work of the US gov't and thus not default PD. No indication uploader is the designer (I asked on their user page about a week ago and never got a response) and therefore the copyright holder. CC/GFDL release appears invalid on that basis.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 22:18, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, the age actually makes a huge difference - if it's from 1968 or before, it's likely it's already made it into the public domain. In the US, if it was published between 1926–1977 without any copyright notice, the copyright will have lapsed. So it just needs to be re-tagged as public domain/expired. I'll go ahead and do that. Thanks! ♠PMC(talk) 02:49, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for my ignorance on the topic of copyright and thank you for your help. I am still working with former members of the 474th and have 2 meetings in September - one in Vegas and one in Denver. We have a new list of 235 former F-111A crew/staff and I will send out new inquiries because I would like to give credit if I can get any reliable information on its precise origin.Aardvarkrocket (talk) 05:28, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, no need to apologize. Copyright is horribly intricate - I never know anything copyright-related for sure unless I double and triple-check a cheat sheet :) I'm likely to export them to Commons since they are public domain, but don't worry - you can edit and update them all the same and the filenames will remain the same. It's just that Commons is our image repository, and free images ought to go there so anyone can categorize, search for, and use them, on any wiki. ♠PMC(talk) 06:31, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea - thanks for your help. Sorry for the late response - I was camping and hiking off grid with my grandson.Aardvarkrocket (talk) 02:08, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem, sounds like a fun time. Glad we could get this sorted. Cheers! ♠PMC(talk) 02:12, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Plaque dedicated to 474th TFW F-111A Combat Operations At USAF Academy.jpg.

This file is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the file description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. — Ирука13 13:25, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
