Slowpoke Good Article Review

[edit]

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to review Slowpoke (Pokémon), both of us nominators appreciate it. However, are a bit confused about the lack of overall comments on the article. While we're glad our prose is apparently up to par, in my case I find it a bit odd that there were apparently no comments to be made about anything in the body bar the citations checked for the spotcheck, as well as an additional lack of comments about how we passed things such as the manual of style and overall. Additionally, your source check seems to only be checking about verifying the lead, whereas most reviews focus on verifying not only the lead, but also the rest of the body of the article. If it's not too much effort, would you be willing to leave additional comments or overall summaries of these areas in order to explain your rationale? While it may or may not affect your overall review, we do just want to ensure the review was conducted while complying with the usual Good Article review standards. We hope it isn't too much trouble. Alright, thank you :) Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 23:21, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:CaseOh, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 03:21, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TheTechie, it is literally a draft. Why is this tag being added? 48JCL 📲 22:15, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At the time of tagging, all it said was "CaseOh's grocery store". But, as an admin has declined it, I'll leave it alone. thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 20:22, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously? It’s a DRAFT 48JCL 19:42, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CaseOh (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)) Are you aware this is a draft of something the community looked into recently (especially as to sourcing) and decided to delete? The article was deleted, plus the moved draft got deleted, and a user sandbox got deleted as well as content forks. You've offered no BLP-worthy sources and only a copyvio image. Yes, this matters even in a draft. It's not an alternative space to edit with free rein. Cheers. JFHJr () 01:04, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Drive by fail of Mark Zuckerberg

[edit]

I was surprised to see here your statement about the minimum % of contributions and position in the contributions list. Can you tell me where you got those numbers? I didn't think the GAN instructions gave any definite numbers for determining if an article was a drive by. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:38, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mike Christie: Pretty sure here, at first I thought it was either 10% or above 6th in authorship but I was proven wrong by BlueMoonset at World War I which then led me to QF the GA (Nom complained so I was very hesitant and g7’d the review). I got the stats here. To be fair, they didn’t really add much prose, and in fact removed more than add, which really screws up the rankings. In fact, most of the text added them. Looking in the history, their main contributions were actually just trimming stuff down and archiving sources. Cheers, 48JCL 12:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks -- I'd forgotten about that footnote. I think there are cases where it wouldn't apply so I'll probably start a conversation at WT:GAN about it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:40, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems unfair and overly hasty to fail solely based on who nominated this for GAN. For whatever it might be worth, the nominator did consult me (a frequent contributor) beforehand. You didn't even comment on the prose, referencing, breadth of coverage, neutrality, stability, or media usage. If there are glaring issues with any of those aspects, then it definitely would've helped to elaborate on that within the review. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 13:32, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You might be a frequent contributor but are not a major contributor. 48JCL 13:35, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS, you are 1.8% contributor. I am assuming MSinccc deleted much of your text. 48JCL 13:37, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is quite possible that user did so. Either way, your review should've assessed the article quality based on the criteria I mentioned above, which at least would give people an idea of what needs to be improved. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 13:40, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
48JCL, looking again at that footnote, it says "if there's no post on the article talk page" you can uncontroversially fail it. In fact Msinccc did post a note saying they'd nominated it for GAN and hoped nobody would object. Nobody did object. I think that means you should not have quickfailed it. Did you not see that note? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:47, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mike Christie, could you remove this from my reviews? I have g7d it and put the nom back up. Sorry for all the inconvenience.
Ping 48JCL 21:09, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That should happen automatically when someone else picks it up for review -- it'll mark your review as superseded at that point and subtract it from the count. Thanks -- I think this was probably the right move on your part; if you missed the note on the page it was an easy mistake to make, but since the nominator did ask on the talk page I think a quick fail wasn't the right choice. Request on 01:41:45, 4 July 2024 for assistance on AfC submission by Defaultmode42

[edit]

I am requesting help to better understand which type of sources would be best suited when creating a new article. Dear 48JCL, thank you so much for reviewing this one – and I am admittedly new here. I am a researcher in the DBS field and can say with confidence that Dr. Lozano is among the top five most famous people in this field, most cited neurosurgeon world-wide, etc. In your assessment, please also see Wikipedia:Notability (academics) – in which he would check many of the boxes. To name one example, the Olivecrona award is the highest honor given to neurosurgeons, world-wide. I also did include many references that cover his work prominently (e.g. the article in the independent). But as an academic, the weight on news-stories is not as high as e.g. awards, achievements, contributions to the field, etc. To help me better understand things: Would you be able to give some examples of sources that would convince you more that Dr. Lozano is a highly notable neuroscientist? Would news-stories about him be better or citation records? Would scientific articles help? For his case, everything is available (he even inspired a Dr. House episode). Since I'm new, I just don't know what you would find most convincing. Thank you so much for further help on this!

Defaultmode42 (talk) 01:41, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Defaultmode42, he may be notable, but the article does not show so. It has a lot of WP:PEACOCK words in a promotional tone. Do you have a conflict of interest? Are you being paid to edit? Also, try not to use so many primary sources. You source stuff he wrote, which is not appropriate and should be in a seperate "Works" section. 48JCL 01:44, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, this is very helpful! I will try my best to revise as requested. I can confirm I am neither paid to edit (I am an associate professor with little time myself...) nor do I have a conflict of interest. Andres is an esteemed colleague and I was surprised to see he doesnt have a wikipedia page. Again, he is ~#1 of the entire DBS field. He was first to do in human DBS for depression and first to do DBS for Alzheimer's Disease. I very much believe this alone should qualify him to be of public interest. So I thought to take up the task and learn how I can contribute. Thanks again for your help, will try my best! Andy Defaultmode42 (talk) 14:08, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @48JCL – I have now resubmitted the article and tried my best to find the remaining sections you referred to w/ WP:PEACOCK wording. I hope I could catch them all. I also made sure that I dont cite "stuff he wrote" (only in the section about his most recent papers). I do refer to his google scholar and research.com pages, which are typical ways we assess scientific impact in the field. I hope that is okay, but of course happy to remove. I added a CNN link about his work in depression and an NPR story covering his work in Alzheimer's. Hopefully that helps? Thank you so much for your thought on this. Andy Defaultmode42 (talk) 14:27, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Defaultmode42 by calling him a colleague, it is clear you do have a conflict of interest. These sources seem to help, however the tone of the article is just a bit un-encyclopedic. I'm sure he could be accepted, you just need to take another person's biography as an example. 48JCL 14:41, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @48JCL! You raise an interesting point. I would call any scientist in my field a colleague. To be clear: we are not at the same university or so (I am in Boston, he is in Toronto). If working in a similar field already gives me a conflict, who would you argue should write the articles about scientists (if not people from their field)? I.e., who would have the expertise to be able to judge their work?
Again, super new here, but as a scientist, I find it pretty surprising that the impact / notability of academics seems to be measured by e.g. news articles about them. It is opposed to what the WP: Notability (Academics) says and it is opposed to how scientific impact is typically measured in the field (which would rather be based on publications or other metrics such as h-index/citations etc – these have been criticized, too, but news coverage is typically not better).
I will further work on making the article more encyclopedia like – but would say that articles seem to differ a lot. For instance, the article about Michael Fox is very brief, while the one about Ali Rezai bursts of details. I tried to make the present one a bit middle-ground between the two of them. Would you happen to be able to point me to an article you like (optimally about a scientist)? That would be of tremendous help. Thank you! Defaultmode42 (talk) 15:51, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Defaultmode42, Alright, seems like you don't have a conflict of interest. By the way, make sure to read WP:BIO so you understand the sourcing requirements. Cheers -- 48JCL 17:07, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@48JCL, thanks a lot! Yes, I did and as I understood it differs a bit for academics – that's why there is a different notability page (see above). Quote: "Academics
Main page: Wikipedia:Notability (academics)
Many scientists, researchers, philosophers and other scholars (collectively referred to as "academics" for convenience) are notably influential in the world of ideas without their biographies being the subject of secondary sources."
If you'd have a good example bio that you like I'd be happy to try and adjust the draft to that one? Or shall I resubmit once more as is? Thank you! Defaultmode42 (talk) 17:42, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts about the Botswana article

[edit]

I saw your nomination for the Botswana article, and I figured I'd share my thoughts on it. Right now, I'm hoping to get all of its most important sub-articles to GA. Right now we're at:

My plan is to get each of these to GA one at a time, and then to rework each section of the main country's article based on what I find working on these sub-articles. I've already finished the Politics article, and I rewrote most of the politics section in Botswana's article to reflect it a while back. I'm pretty much good to go on the history article. Once it's in a state I'm happy with, I want to rewrite the main article's history section using those same sources, because right now it's really unbalanced and needs some work. Since you're also interested in this article, I wondered if you had any thoughts on this. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 04:08, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to get work done on Flag of Botswana in my sandbox currently, I may work on these later. I'm editing the lower tier pages because I don't have access to the Wikipedia Library. Once I get it, I'll try to work on these higher tier articles. 48JCL 14:06, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're also editing the highest tier one of them all, Botswana itself. I was just wondering if you wanted to keep working on that as it is, or if you wanted to get the Wikipedia Library, work on some of the higher tier articles, and then tackle the main country article using our work on those higher tier articles and make it GA or even FA quality. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 01:55, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also going to ping 750h+ for any thoughts on this or if there are any sections of the article that stand out while reading the article. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 21:42, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The prehistory section firstly. I've only started reading and I've noticed significant underlinking, and the books need page numbers. 750h+ 02:43, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thebiguglyalien, I might as well work on Economy of Botswana. — 48JCL 13:15, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Further, the edit history shows and proves that my article Draft:Hailey Welch, was created first, before the draft that you accepted. I don't know. I've come to the conclusion that what happened was permissible, and that I was wrong. The draft you accepted was written an hour after mine, and contained significant overlap, but I guess no wrong was done. I thought two competing drafts weren't allowed, and perhaps I was wrong. Request on 07:28:48, 9 July 2024 for assistance on AfC submission by Battybri

[edit]

Hello, thanks for your help on the Dereck Joubert Wiki page. I have removed quite a bit of content that was originally taken from their website https://www.wildlifefilms.co/ and could not be cited as per the Wikipedia guidelines. I have then added citations to good-quality external sources for the other elements, with every sentence cited properly.

I have saved the update as a draft, but not resubmitted - as I thought it best to message you first and check it's up to scratch. Warm regards.

Battybri (talk) 07:28, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Battybri After a quick readthrough -- I checked the sources, and he has enough news sources and WP:RS sources therefore establishing his notability, however, the problem is that there are some bits of unsourced text. I would also recommend removing IMDb, as it is not reliable per WP:IMDB. He is notable, when you are done with this I will gladly copyedit it and accept. 48JCL 11:25, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, thank you once again. I have just stripped out the IMDB citations and replaced. I also added a citation to a National Geographic page where most of the unsourced information was from. Please let me know if you need any additional edits. Battybri (talk) 13:16, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 15:06:22, 25 July 2024 for assistance on AfC submission by Eazuri

[edit]

Hello,

Thank you very much for reviewing my draft page! I am requesting assistance because my submission has been declined multiple times before and each time I do my best to correct/implement the points raised in reviews, it seems that I am failing. I could just stop editing, but I am a beginner at this and I put enough effort into this to not leave it unfinished. I know people who know him and we have the same profession, but I do not have a conflict of interest, as far as I can tell.

I am rather new to Wikipedia editing, so I thought I would start with an article about a personality that (to the best of my knowledge and according to my personal experiences) is quite well-known in Hungary and that I know a lot about. He has a page on the Hungarian Wikipedia, I translated most of that text to English then added practically all of the trustworthy information I could find on him online (with sources from his universities, organizations that he has taken part in, written media, media programmes that he appears in, interviews with him about himself, etc.).

1. I am usually receiving the feedback that the sources seem unreliable (even though I am using official and well-known, non-partisan sources when I could find them). I used the same ones as the Hungarian Wiki page (I speak Hungarian and have checked each of them), and many more.

2. The other point is relevance. Among my acquaintances in Hungary, most say they know of him. He works a lot with businesses and politicians and (based on what I know of him) he plays quite an active part in shaping policies and public opinion through his consultancy and media appearances. He is active in the Brussels bubble and I thought that writing about him could not only be a good first try for me, but also useful for non-Hungarians who encounter him there. It seems that in trying to prove his relevance, I somehow ended up using promotional language. I have read the guidelines on that and tried to find "peacock terms" and such, but could not point out where I misstepped. The only thing I can think of is "He has gained more and more recognition since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022." - sourced, because that is what the referenced article says about him.

If you could help me with any of these points, point out specific mistakes and such, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance, I hope it is not too big of a trouble, I just thought you might be the best person to ask for help.

Eazuri (talk) 15:06, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Eazuri, I would recommend getting assistance from the Guild of Copy Editors. The article needs a significant copyedit, and avoid using words in the short description like "Expert". I think a good template to place would be {{Tone}}, which is currently my only issue with this article. Once you are done resubmit and another AFC reviewer shall read it. — 48JCL 17:23, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the guidance, I will see what I find there! Eazuri (talk) 13:21, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Three Dikgosi Monument

[edit]

On 7 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Three Dikgosi Monument, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that some minority ethnic groups in Botswana view the Three Dikgosi Monument as a proclamation of Motswana dominance? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Three Dikgosi Monument (2nd nomination). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Three Dikgosi Monument), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DCWC closing update

[edit]

The 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest has come to a close! After a thrilling finish to the event with a slew of submissions on the final day, we have our winners. With 608 points, Bronze Belt Buckle – 3rd place Thebiguglyalien (submissions) comes in third with his series of Kiribati and Botswanan submissions; Silver Belt Buckle – 2nd place Tuvalu BeanieFan11 (submissions) flies into second place at the last second with 771 points after a string of good articles about sportspersons; and after leading for much of contest's three months, Gold Belt Buckle – 1st place Generalissima (submissions) finishes with a whopping 798 points to take home the Gold Belt Buckle. Congratulations to our winners!

In addition to his spot in the top three, Tuvalu BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins the special awards for submitting under the most countries (44 countries) and for writing the most articles about women (15 Did you know? nominations)! India Magentic Manifestations (submissions), after making 16 submissions under the Indian flag—15 of them good articles—receives the awards for most submissions for a single country and most featured or good articles promoted. For their submission of one FAC review, five FLC reviews, and 20 GAN reviews, Simongraham (submissions) wins for most article reviews.

The results of the contest have far exceeded any expectations the coordinators had for it at the beginning: among the submissions to the event were 3 FAs, 10 FLs, 88 GAs, dozens of article reviews of every kind, and more Did you know? submissions than we can count! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...

We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Ixtal (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs).
