Euston Quah (Chinese: 柯仲佑) is Albert Winsemius Chair Professor in Economics and Director of Economic Growth Centre, at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU). He is a member of the Social Science Research Council of Singapore and a Board Member of the Competition and Consumer Commission Singapore. He also holds a joint appointment with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at NTU.

Prof Quah is renowned regionally and currently holds positions in the following universities, since

2009 - current President of the Economic Society of Singapore and Editor of Singapore Economic Review.

2015 - Fellow Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Art.

Early years and Family

Quah was born in Penang, in the Federation of Malaya which later became Malaysia, and attended the Penang Free School before leaving for university studies in Canada. He is married with two children, Josh Quah and Jo-Ann Quah. He is very knowledgeable in wines and health supplements.

Career

Quah obtained his Bachelor of Arts Hons from Simon Fraser University in 1982, MA from University of Victoria, British Columbia Canada in 1984 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from National University of Singapore. Prior to joining NTU, Euston was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Deputy Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies, Deputy Director of Public Program(now called the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy) and Head of the Department of Economics at the National University of Singapore.

His academic career in NTU has included several administrative positions over the years, including Chair of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Vice-Chair of the Sustainable Earth Office, Chair of the Senate Committee on University Policies and Member of the University Teaching Council.

In his continuing career as an economic advisor, Euston has been advisor to many government ministries and statutory boards in Singapore as well as to overseas organizations including Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. He is a member of the Panel for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, for the Overseas Development Institute of London and has served as a Board of Trustees member of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, the Energy Market Authority, and the Energy Studies Institute at National University Singapore.

Research contributions

Euston's area of expertise are Environmental Economics, Resource Allocation and Cost Benefit Analysis, Law and Economics and Household Economics. Professor Quah was also recognised as an internationally respected environmental economist when in 2005, he was invited by UNESCAP as one of twelve eminent speakers in the Asia-Pacific in the Eminent Environmental Economists Symposium held in Seoul, Korea.

Publications

Co-Author of the bestselling "Principles of Economics" textbook with Gregory Mankiw an Asian edition, now into its third edition in 2020.

Author of internationally acclaimed book "Cost Benefit Analysis" with E. J. Mishan 6th edition. His work on Cost-Benefit Analysis (with E.J. Mishan 5th edition, and 6th edition due in 2020) was recommended for reference by the US White House, Office of Management and Budget for use by government agencies applying for project grants.

Editor of Singapore 2065: Leading Insights on Economy and Environment from 50 Singapore Icons and Beyond published by World Scientific in 2015

Author of Economics and Home Production: Theory and Measurement,Avebury; First Edition edition (November 1, 1993) published by Ashgate, UK, was selected for inclusion by the International Library of Critical Writings in Economics in 2004, and much of his work on household production valuation had received favorable reviews in reputable journals such as the Journal of Economic Literature, the Economic Journal and the Journal of Labour Economics.

A prolific writer, Professor Quah has published over 100 papers in major internationally refereed journals and opinion pieces. Selected works include an international publication on cost-benefit analysis for Oxford University Press, 2013; a lead journal article in World Economy in 2015; a Commentary in the Asian Economic Policy Review in 2016; an invited paper in the Macroeconomic Review in 2017; and forthcoming papers in the Asian Development Bank Institute monograph (2019).
