The Ghost and Molly McGee is an American animated supernatural comedy television series created by Bill Motz and Bob Roth[13][14] for Disney Channel. A sneak peek of the show's theme song was first shown on May 1, 2021, during the network's "Halfway to Halloween" event,[15] followed by the show's premiere on October 1, 2021.[16][17] On August 31, 2021, more than a month before it premiered, the series was renewed for a second season,[18] which is set to premiere on April 1, 2023.[19][20]

Plot

[edit]

In the Human Realm, 13-year-old[21][22] optimist Molly McGee arrives in her new hometown of Brighton, only to discover a grumpy ghost named Scratch haunting her new house. Scratch curses Molly in an attempt to scare her away; however, this backfires, forever binding him to her. After a rocky introduction to Molly's family, Scratch and Molly form a tentative friendship. Shortly thereafter, in the Ghost Realm, the level of misery in Brighton decreases slightly; the Ghost Council's Chairman notices this.[23]

While initially antagonistic toward her, Scratch opens up to Molly with time, and their friendship strengthens.

Characters

[edit]

Main

[edit]
  • Molly McGee (voiced by Ashly Burch), an optimistic tween girl who lives to make the world a better place. She keeps Scratch a secret from anyone who isn't her family, and later Libby.
  • Scratch (voiced by Dana Snyder), a grumpy ghost cursed to be alongside Molly.[24] While he isn't seen by any humans except the McGee family and Libby, his favorite member of the McGee family is Grandma Nin, because she sends him Thai snacks. His main hobby is making people miserable. His job is to scare people as assigned by the Ghost Council, but he seems to like spending his time being with Molly.[24] Scratch glows a fluorescent cyan while visible, but is able to render himself invisible at will. He has a slimy appearance, though he is able to shift his appearance at will, as well as being able to distort his surroundings, typically to scare humans. He also has the ability to teleport between the Human Realm and the Ghost Realm at will. In "Out of House and Home/Home is Where the Haunt Is", after the McGees are forced to leave the house, they are no longer cursed together, but Scratch still stays with the McGees after they move back in. In the Season 1 finale, he is punished for befriending a human, until Molly (as a wraith) rescues him, overpowers the Flow of Failed Phantoms and disintegrates the Chairman.
  • Pete McGee (voiced by Jordan Klepper), Molly's father. Pete married Sharon with an unofficial wedding.[18] He tends to act dim-witted at times, but means well.
  • Sharon McGee (voiced by Sumalee Montano), Molly's mother. Sharon married Pete with an unofficial wedding.[18] She originally had a tense relationship with her mother, Grandma Nin, but they began to get along better, starting with "The Best of Nin-tensions". Her income comes from doing gigs from an app named Gig-Pig.
    • Montano also voices Grandma Nin, Molly and Darryl's grandmother, Sharon’s mother and Pete's mother-in-law.[18]
  • Darryl McGee (voiced by Michaela Dietz), Molly's mischievous younger brother.[18] Darryl has a pet tarantula named Heidi Hairylegs.

Recurring

[edit]

Brighton[23] citizens

  • Libby Stein-Torres[25][26] (voiced by Lara Jill Miller), Molly's best human friend. Libby has a love for turtles. She suffers from frequent slapstick comedy as she is shown to be rather unlucky. Libby hides her head in her turtleneck collar when she is nervous. She knows about historical people as they are people that passed away a long time ago. Libby was unaware of Scratch's presence until the episode "Scratch the Surface", when she learned about Scratch's existence, and later on, she became friends with him after they worked together to save Molly when she got trapped in a compost machine.[27]
  • Andrea Davenport (/ˈɑːndriə/ AHN-dree-uh; voiced by Jules Medcraft), Molly's arch-nemesis and occasional frenemy. She is very sensitive about how her first name is pronounced and she is the most popular girl at school. Despite her success, she seems unhappy at times, desperately craving the attention of her busy parents.[28] In "Home is Where the Haunt Is", Andrea is shown to care about Molly, having started a fund to save the latter's family's house. It is also revealed in said episode that she sees Molly as her best friend.
  • Sheela (voiced by Aparna Nancherla), Molly's geeky friend.[29]
  • Kat (voiced by Eden Riegel), Molly's sweet pink-haired friend.[29]
  • Miss Lightfoot (voiced by Julia Jones), Molly's constantly nervous teacher.[28]
  • Mrs. Roop (voiced by Jane Lynch),[30] a teacher at Brighton Middle School. She has a wife, Pam, mentioned in "No Good Deed".
  • Patty (voiced by Jenifer Lewis),[31] an elder resident who quickly befriends Molly.
  • Mayor Brunson (voiced by Patton Oswalt), Brighton's mayor.[32]
  • Leah[33] Stein-Torres (voiced by Pamela Adlon),[34] Libby's mother and friend. She is the "#1 fan" of her own daughter. Ms. Stein-Torres owns a bookstore called Book Marks the Spot.
  • Principal O'Connor (voiced by Eugene Byrd), Brighton Middle School's principal.
  • Irving the Illusionist (voiced by Trevor Devall),[35] a street magician who gets a thrill out of bewildering any passerby who sees him with his sleight of hand which, so far, mainly involves cards, coins and confetti.
  • Weird Larry (voiced by Trevor Devall), a pawn shop owner whose eccentric ways tend to freak out anybody on account that he tends to ask for help with the uncomfortable favors such as the time he needed help finding and catching his beloved runaway pet skunk Vera.
  • Maxwell Davenport[36] (voiced by Thomas Lennon), the owner of a local department store and Andrea’s father.[37]
  • Mrs. Davenport (voiced by Jessica Keenan Wynn), Maxwell's wife and Andrea's mother.
  • Joanie Pataky (voiced by Grey Griffin), Brighton's news reporter.

They are able to hook into the Internet and play video games that are extraordinarily violent, that cause the blood pressure to rise and the adrenaline level to go up, games that cause people to be killed and the players to die themselves. It is a very intense experience. They are able to get into Internet chat rooms and, if there are no nuts or people of the same mentality in their hometown, hook up with people around the country. They are able to rent from the video store—not just go down and see Natural Born Killers or The Basketball Diaries—but they are able to bring it home and watch it repeatedly. In this case, even maybe make their own violent film. Many have said this murder was very much akin to The Basketball Diaries, in which a student goes in and shoots others in the classroom. I have seen a video of that, and many others may have.

Opposition from Dr. Seuss

[edit]
The cartoon in question, depicting Holmes as allied with supposedly traitorous Japanese Americans

There was an outcry after a cartoon by Theodor Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) mocking Holmes was published in the New York newspaper PM on January 13, 1942. Geisel responded January 21, 1942 (ellipses in original):

In response to the letters defending John Haynes Holmes ... sure, I believe in love, brotherhood and a cooing white pigeon on every man's roof. I even think it's nice to have pacifists and strawberry festivals ... in between wars.

But right now, when the Japs are planting their hatchets in our skulls, it seem like a hell of a time for us to smile and warble: 'Brothers!' It is a rather flabby battlecry.

If we want to win, we've got to kill Japs, whether it depresses John Haynes Holmes or not. We can get palsy-walsy afterward with those that are left.[52]

Holmes' stand as a pacifist in both world wars was neither popular nor easy. He faced expulsion from his denomination during World War I if he did not disavow his pacifist views; he resigned his membership in the American Unitarian Association as a result, and the split was not healed for decades. Geisel's criticism is an example of the scorn and ridicule Holmes faced as a result of his strong views, which he vigorously defended.[citation needed]

Holmes had announced his pacifism before America entered World War I. On April 3, 1917 he preached on A Statement to my People on the Eve of War, declaring: "Therefore would I make it plain that, so long as I am your minister, this Church will answer no military summons.... But so long as I am priest, this altar shall be consecrated to human brotherhood, and before it shall be offered worship only to that one God and Father of us all, ‘Who hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell together on the face of the earth."[53]

Etymology

[edit]
Bossa nova rhythm[54]

In Brazil, the word "bossa" is old-fashioned slang for something done with particular charm, natural flair or innate ability. As early as 1932, Noel Rosa used the word in a samba:

"O samba, a prontidão e outras bossas são nossas coisas, são coisas nossas." ("Samba, readiness and other bossas are our things, are things from us.")

The phrase bossa nova means literally "new trend" or "new wave" in Portuguese.[55] The exact origin of the term "bossa nova" remained unclear for many decades, according to some authors. Within the artistic beach culture of the late 1950s in Rio de Janeiro, the term "bossa" was used to refer to any new "trend" or "fashionable wave". In his book Bossa Nova, Brazilian author Ruy Castro asserts that "bossa" was already in use in the 1950s by musicians as a word to characterize someone's knack for playing or singing idiosyncratically.[56] Castro claims that the term "bossa nova" might have first been used in public for a concert given in 1957 by the Grupo Universitário Hebraico do Brasil (Hebrew University Group of Brazil). The authorship of the term "bossa nova" is attributed to the then-young journalist Moyses Fuks, who was promoting the event.[57] That group consisted of Sylvia Telles, Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Luiz Eça, Roberto Menescal, and others. Mr. Fuks's description, fully supported by most of the bossa nova members, simply read "HOJE. SYLVIA TELLES E UM GRUPO BOSSA NOVA" ("Today. Sylvia Telles and a 'Bossa Nova' group"), since Sylvia Telles was the most famous musician in the group at that time. In 1959, Nara Leão also participated in more than one embryonic display of bossa nova. These include the 1st Festival de Samba Session, conducted by the student union of Pontifícia Universidade Católica. This session was chaired by Carlos Diegues (later a prominent Cinema Novo film director), a law student whom Leão ultimately married.[58]

In philosophy

[edit]
"Imagine a multidimensional spider's web in the early morning covered with dew drops. And every dew drop contains the reflection of all the other dew drops. And, in each reflected dew drop, the reflections of all the other dew drops in that reflection. And so ad infinitum. That is the Buddhist conception of the universe in an image."

The story of Attack on Titan centers on a civilization inside three circular walls. According to the knowledge propagated locally, it is the last surviving vestige of human civilization. Its inhabitants, known as Eldians, have been led to believe that over one hundred years ago, humanity was driven to the brink of extinction after the emergence of humanoid giants called Titans, who attack and eat humans on sight. The last remnants of humanity retreated behind three concentric walls and enjoyed roughly a century of peace. Within the walls, the thought of venturing outside is strongly frowned upon and discouraged. To combat Titans, the country's military employs Vertical Maneuvering Equipment (VME), also called Omni-Directional Maneuvering Gear (ODM Gear): a set of waist-mounted grappling hooks and gas-powered propulsion enabling immense mobility in three dimensions. Swords made of ultrahard steel are used in conjunction with the gear, and eventually rocket launcher-like weapons called Thunder Spears are also developed.

There exist different types of Titans. Pure Titans are the weakest and most generic Titans, whose behavior is easy to predict, making them easy to kill. Abnormal Titans are Pure Titans whose behavior is more difficult to predict, making them far more dangerous. The Nine Titans, also known as Titan Shifters (Attack, Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart, War Hammer, and Founding), are the strongest Titans; each is able to shift back and forth between human and Titan form to access their Titan's abilities. Many Titan Shifters also posses the ability to harden certain parts of their bodies at will, typically in order to make them virtually impenetrable, or to strengthen their blows during combat.

Pure Titans are created by injecting Eldians with Pure Titan spinal fluid. If a Pure Titan eats the human body of a person who possesses one of the Nine Titans, said Eldian will revert to human form and gain that Shifter's powers, whereupon they are cursed to live only 13 more years. If their powers are not inherited by another Eldian before their death, their powers will be inherited by an Eldian baby born shortly thereafter, regardless of distance or blood-relations.

As the story progresses, the true nature of the Titans and the existence of civilization outside the walls is revealed to the characters and the audience.

Plot

[edit]

Eren Yeager is a boy who lives in the town of Shiganshina, located on the outermost of three circular walls protecting their inhabitants from Titans. In the year 845, the first wall (Wall Maria) is breached by two new types of Titans, the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan. During the incident, Eren's mother is eaten by a Smiling Titan while Eren escapes. He swears revenge on all Titans and enlists in the military along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his best friend Armin Arlert. Five years after Shiganshina's fall, the Colossal Titan attacks the city of Trost, located on the second wall (Wall Rose). Eren helps to successfully defend the city after he discovers a mysterious ability to turn himself into a sentient Attack Titan. Additionally, he regains memories of his father giving him this ability shortly after the fall of Wall Maria, and telling him that the truth about their world can be found in their basement in Shiganshina. These events draw the attention of the Survey Corps and their commander, Erwin Smith, who intend to use his power to reclaim Wall Maria and reach the Yeagers' basement. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are transferred to the Special Operations Squad, under the care of Captain Levi Ackerman and Hange Zoë.

During an expedition into the forest between the walls, Eren and his companions encounter a sentient Female Titan, whom they later expose as their fellow military comrade Annie Leonhart. With help from his friends, Eren fights and defeats Annie, who encases herself in crystal and is put in custody. After the fight, it is discovered that there are Titans lying dormant within the walls (known as Wall Titans). Shortly thereafter, Pure Titans mysteriously appear within Wall Rose with no evidence of how they got in, accompanied by the sentient Beast Titan. Ymir, one of the new Survey Corps graduates, reveals that she can also transform into the sentient Jaw Titan, while Ymir's close friend Krista Lenz reveals herself as Historia Reiss, a member of the royal family. Two other members of the Survey Corps, Reiner Braun and Bertholt Hoover, reveal themselves as the Armored and Colossal Titan respectively. They attempt to kidnap Eren and Ymir, but fail. In the ensuing battle, Eren discovers another power within himself called "the Coordinate", that allows him to control other Titans, which he uses to kill the Smiling Titan and send a horde of Pure Titans to attack Reiner and Bertholt. This forces the two to escape, whereupon Ymir willingly flees with them, offering herself as sacrifice to prevent Historia from being targeted by the enemy. In the aftermath of these events, it is determined that the Pure Titans who suddenly appeared within Wall Rose were the inhabitants of various villages within Wall Rose, who had in some way been transformed into Titans. This leads the characters to the conclusion that all Pure Titans are, in fact, transformed human beings.
