CC BY-SA 4.0
[edit]The issue with CC BY-SA 4.0 for Wikipedia is not with the copyright parts. 4.0 adds sui generis database rights, something which Europeans have but Americans don't, to the license. This would affect reusing facts from Wikipedia in some ways. (Facts themselves are not covered by copyright in the US). WMF proposed switching to 4.0 with a waiver of database rights, but Creative Commons said that was not possible. CC BY 4.0 is fine even with database rights because it doesn't have the share-alike clause for downstream use. CC BY-SA 4.0 is fine for images. The WMF would like to do this but will involve a significant amount of complicated work on the database. This is original research on my part. As far as I know there isn't a WMF explanation available to serve as a reference for this.

- Comment by Jimmy Wales: They would like to do the work to make the move possible.
- My interpretation about the amount of work mentioned to adopt CC BY-SA 4.0: Since a waiver is not allowed we would have to be able to track facts back to the editor who added them.

Graphs
[edit]One of the graph modules has software problems that may not be fixed. See mw:Extension:Graph/Plans and its discussion page. As of 9/15/23 the plan is to migrate to Vega 5.
"The Graph extension uses the older Vega 1 & Vega 2 libraries, which had a number of security vulnerabilities. In the interest of the security of the people who use Wikipedia, the Graph extension was disabled on all Wikimedia wikis in April 2023."
This affects
- Template:Graph:Chart - 6,550 uses as of 9/16/23
- Template:Graph:Lines - 1,494 uses as of 9/16/23
- Template:Graph:PageViews - 5,312 as of 9/16/23

- Template:Graph:Weather monthly history - 115 as of 9/16/23

articles should not be declined at AfC solely on the grounds of using parenthetical citations.

- Template talk:Cite doi#RfC: Should cite doi template be deprecated? (2015) - similar issues with Cite Q
- Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2017 September 15#Template:Cite Q - I supported keeping, with issues
- WikiText layout of reference templates: some prefer horizontal, some vertical though it makes paragraphs very hard to read in the text editor
- Visual Editor by default seems to remove all spaces and newlines between parameters in the reference templates
- The template data for {{cite journal}} specifies one space before each pipe using
"format": "{{_ |_=_}}"
