Percy the Small Engine is an anthropomorphised fictional saddle tank engine who originated from The Railway Series, debuting in 1950. He is best known for appearing as a primary character in the television adaptation Thomas & Friends as the best friend of Thomas the Tank Engine, later serving the same role in the preschool reboot Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go.

Prototype and background

[edit]

Percy first appeared in the 1950 book Troublesome Engines, in the third story "Trouble in the Shed", and would serve as the protagonist of the following story "Percy Runs Away". Percy the Small Engine, the final Railway Series book illustrated by C. Reginald Dalby,[1] would be dedicated to the character.

Percy is based on a GWR No. 1340 Trojan with a 0-4-0 wheel configurement.
