The Great Uryankhay War was a conflict fought between the Jianzhou Jurchens, a confederation of tribes in northeastern Asia, and the Northern Yuan dynasty, a Mongolic state and the successor to the Yuan Dynasty that controlled much of modern-day Mongolia. Despite its name, the war was primarily driven by small clashes between the nobles of either side of the frontier in Northeastern China.[1]

Background

[edit]

In 1538, a rebellion of the Uriankhai people occurred but it was put down by the Northern Yuan forces and its territory was absorbed into the Khalkha tumen. Eventually, the Northern Yuan kept growing until it reached its territorial zenith. The Jianzhou Jurchens produced multiple natural resources which were seen as lucrative by the leaders of the Northern Yuan.[2] In this event, the resurgent Yuans, including Dayan Khan[3] wished to incorporate large territories within their Empire. The sons of Dayan Khan started military confrontations with the Jianzhou Jurchens and hostile relations began to emerge.

It was also claimed that the territory of the Jianzhou Jurchens was to be absorbed into the Chakhar tumen. However this claim is refuted by Tumultogoo[4] who explains that a separate tumen was to be given to one of his sons.
