This article is about the German military rank Soldat. Members of armed forces are explained under the article Soldier.
Soldat is a generic term for new recruited soldiers in the German Armed Forces(de: Bundeswehr) and the lowest level of enlisted personnel in the Army(de: Heer) and in the Air-Force(de: Luftwaffe). Soldiers of the Navy Forces are called Matrose(en: seaman). It is also a military rank in the Swiss Army and in the former DDR Army Force - Nationale Volksarmee.
History
[edit]The rank Soldat was known in the former Third- Reich- Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe and has described the lowest level in the Forces. The senior- grade after Soldat has been Gefreiter.
