Cecelia Espenoza is an American politician, attorney, and judge who was elected as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives in the 2024 election for the 4th district.[1][2]
A member of the Democratic Party, Espenoza is considered a moderate[3] and has described herself as a "pragmatic progressive."[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Espenoza graduated from the University of Utah's honors program, becoming the first Latina to do so. She was the second Latina to be admitted to the Utah State Bar.[5]
Political career
[edit]Following the resignation of Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez from the Colorado House of Representatives, Espenoza announced her candidacy for the vacancy selection that was scheduled to be held in order to replace Gonzales-Gutierrez. She ran against schoolteacher and community organizer Tim Hernández and former state representative Rochelle Galindo.[5][6] Hernández ended up winning the selection, receiving 39 votes compared to Espenoza's 27 votes; Galindo received only 2 votes.[6]
