Jay-Z developed the album at his RocFest music festival in Malibu, California, and previewed some of the songs. It was recorded from early 2019 to October 2024, in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Nigeria, after finishing the On the Run II Tour with Beyoncé in 2018. Production was handled by Jay-Z, Labrinth, Fauntleroy, Williams, The-Dream, Eminem, Beyoncé, West, and James Blake themselves, alongside No I.D., Dom Maker, Cool & Dre, Boi-1da, Mike Will Made It, Hit-Boy, Timbaland, J-Roc, Mike Dean, Swizz Beatz, Jeff Bhasker, Al Shux, and others. To promote the album, he promoted the album while he was at his home for a sleepless night with his fans on July 15, 2024, as well he performed at the New York Times Square on the album's release. The cover pays tribute to Sly and the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On (1971) and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly (2015).
The album and experimental nature received critical acclaim and praised its production and maximalist work, compared to that by Kanye West and many experimental rappers. It debuted at number one at the Billboard 200, marking him Jay-Z's fifteenth number one album on the chart, selling 480,000 album-equivalent units behind The Blueprint 3 (2009). The album released 6 singles along with its music videos: "Family Business", "Endless", "D.C.", "Slim 'n' Me", "It's Too Much" and "Nothing". It was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for its million of copies purchases. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 68th Grammy Awards, but lost to GNX by Kendrick Lamar, as well as for Album of the Year, but lost to Katy Perry's 143.
Background
[edit]On June 30, 2017, Jay-Z released 4:44, his thirteenth studio album, which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year on its 60th edition, with its song "The Story of O.J." being nominated for Record of the Year. After the album's release, he embarked on the short-lived 4:44 Tour, supported by Vic Mensa.
On June 16, 2018, he and his wife Beyoncé released an album titled Everything Is Love, which was premiered on their On the Run II Tour. It won at the 61st Grammy Awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
After the tour, on December 3, 2018, some fans revealed that Jay-Z will still drop new music. Tidal released an album promotion signed "#Jay-Z15ComingSoon", which is expected to be released sometime in 2019, with Beyoncé as its confirmed guest appearance, but was left out and changed it for its first recording session. A leftover track from the Everything Is Love album and an unreleased Magna Carta Holy Grail track were expected from the album's tracklist. Jay-Z will later go on to record the album in early 2019.
Recording
[edit]Jay-Z started recording the album at his Bel Air home in February 2019, and invited Migos to record a "hard-hitting" song, which will later go on to be named "D.C.", named after Washington, D.C., the United States' capital. While recording at North Hollywood in April, he met actor and rapper Donald Glover, who raps under the name Childish Gambino, as well as rapper Kendrick Lamar, who previously worked with Jay-Z on a "Don't Kill My Vibe" remix, British musician Labrinth and African giant Burna Boy from Nigeria. Jay-Z and Glover would later go on to work together on the track "Mood 4 Eva" alongside Beyoncé on The Lion King: The Gift. Jay-Z said at Glover to do a verse on "D.C."; Glover said: "OK, let's make this s*** up". To promote his new marijuana brand Caliva, Jay-Z confirmed a track featuring additional vocals from Yo Gotti, titled "The Calivian".
In mid-2020, Jay-Z contacted Lil Uzi Vert and Big Sean to work on the album and signing them on his label Roc Nation. Lil Uzi Vert contributed to "D.C." and Big Sean contributed to "One Two Freestyle", which samples "Lollipop" by the Chordettes. He also said that his label Roc-A-Fella was shelved in 2013, and found a label's diss track recorded and leftovered during the Magna Carta Holy Grail era, which would be titled "The Killing of Roc-A-Fella". In late 2020, he found Frank Ocean's body at a McDonald's in L.A., thoughting that he was dead from suicide. He was scared and decided to work with him on a collaborative album, titled He's the Singer, I'm the Rapper, with the title and cover being a nod to DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's 1988 album He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper. Only one track recorded from these sessions was "Quiet Places", featuring Rick Ross and ad-libs from WWE wrestler Randy Orton, through his heavy metal pseudonym Randymetal, another artist signed to Roc Nation.
In 2021, Jay-Z reunited with Mariah Carey, the pair previously worked together on "Heartbreaker" (1999). While recording the soundtrack to the film The Harder They Fall, he recorded the track "New Money", with Kid Cudi on featured vocals and hums, as well as working on a song with Kanye West during West's Donda sessions. In November, it was announced that "D.C." was completed and started making its music video, directed by Jake Nava and Ricky Saiz.
In 2022, Jay-Z worked with Eminem on a new track, featuring Eminem's "chopping" flow and a strong rock music influence.
In 2023, Jay-Z revealed Larrabee-based mixers Jaycen Joshua and Manny Marroquin started mixing the album. He also revealed that he changed his home to Malibu.
In 2024, Jay-Z finally recorded the last track of the album, titled "Enterprise Counts", and previewed and premiered the album at a sleepless night at his home and at his RocFest music festival in July, revealing that he was completed through his Instagram, posting "HOV IS BACK: @newmoneynenterprisecounts is gonna be my last album", along with a video, revealing that he will retire from music. In June, during the 2024 Tony Awards, Jay-Z performed with Alicia Keys their song "Empire State of Mind", as well as he previewed on his social media that he will work with her on the album.
