[edit]The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It is the third-largest country by land and total area, comprising 50 states, one federal district, five populated territories, nine Minor Outlying Islands, and 326 Indian reservations. It is the world's third-most populous country, with a population of over 330 million, and the most populous in the Americas. The United States shares land borders with Canada to the north and with Mexico to the south, and shares maritime borders with nations such as Russia. Its capital is Washington, D.C. while its largest city and main financial center is New York City. Other major cities include Los Angeles and Chicago.
The United States is a federal republic and a representative democracy with three separate branches of government. The executive branch is led by the president, who is the head of state and of government. The legislative branch is composed of the lower House of Representatives, which is based on population, and the upper Senate, which is based on state representation. The judicial branch interprets laws based on the country's constitution.
