The Bangladesh national basketball team is the national basketball team representing Bangladesh. It is administered by the Bangladesh Basketball Federation, nicknamed the Tigers. The team's top achievements are winning the 2013 SABA Championship, alongside obtaining the bronze medal at the 2010 South Asian Games. They have never qualified for Basketball at the Summer Olympics or the FIBA World Championship.

History

[edit]

The team was established in 2001 and became a member of FIBA in December 2001. It played its first match in Assam, India, against India in the inaugural SABA Championship, suffering a heavy 100-26 defeat against a stronger Indian side.

The team remained dormant until they participated in the 2010 South Asian Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They had suffered defeats against Afghanistan and India in the openers, but had defeated Nepal twice, which led to a bronze medal, being the team's first achievement.

The team was victorious in the 2013 SABA Championship in Dhaka, as they defeated Maldives, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Nepal, which led to qualifying for their first major tournament at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship in the Philippines. However, they faced heavy defeats against Bahrain, Thailand, and Kazakhstan, alongside Malaysia in the classification round, finishing 15th in the standings.

Between 2014 and 2018, the Bangladesh team repeatedly finished second in the four consecutive SABA Championships, followed by participating in the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal. They lost all of their games, falling short to Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal, leaving them in 4th place.

The team had last played at the 2021 SABA Championship in Dhaka, in which they had finished second, losing to India.

Las Vegas Vipers guard Mazarul Alek expressed interest in playing for the national team, and stated he would "revamp the team completely in 2025". He declared his allegiance to Bangladesh on 1 December 2024, and he will debut for the team in two organised friendlies against Pakistan and India in February 2025, which is during the same week of the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend.
