Debuted in October 1984 as an additional model of the Corolla. It is the fifth generation in the entire Corolla series, and in markets where hatchback demand is high, such as Europe and Oceania, this model was sold as the main model of the 5th generation Corolla.
The body type is a 3-door or 5-door hatchback. The platform and strut suspension are common to the Corolla sedan. The rear seats can be reclined and folded to increase the luggage space.
Initially 1. 6L DOHC EFI 4A-GELU engine (GT), 1. 5L SOHC 3A-LU, 1. 6L SOHC EFI 4A-ELU type was installed. With minor changes to each series of Corolla in May 1985, 1C-L type (1. 8L diesel) and 2E-LU (1. 3L SOHC 12-valve gasoline) were added.
The top-grade GT is the first two-box model to be equipped with a DOHC engine in Japan. The exterior was equipped with a rear spoiler, enhanced suspension damping, and performance rods were added to improve rigidity. The interior was also equipped with genuine leather tilt steering and sports bucket seats, and digital meter was also available as an option.
"GT" participated in the 1980s 's mid-to-late All Japan Touring Car Championship (1985-1993)|All Japan Touring Car Championship with Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno, and fought with its rival Honda Civic. In 1986, FX-GT won the overall victory in a race held at Sendai Highland Raceway.

In May 1987, the 6th generation Corolla/Sprinter was announced and a full model change was made. In addition, since the Corolla Levin was front-wheel drive like the FX, which meant the FX no longer participated in the All Japan Touring Car Championship.
The engines installed are a 1.3L 2E-LU type (73PS/6,000rpm), a newly developed 1.5L EFI Toyota A-type engine 5A-FE (94PS/6,000rpm), 5A-F 1.5L (85PS/6,000rpm) high mechanical twin cam carburetor, and 4A-GE 1.6L (120PS/6,600rpm). With the advent of the 5A series engine, all models except the 1.3L 2E-LU became DOHC 16 valves.
Minor change in May 1989. The interior and exterior designs and grade names were changed, and the GT 4A-GE engine became compatible with high-octane gasoline and powered up to 140PS/7,200rpm. All cars became the DOHC 16 valve EFI engine. In addition, GTV, which has simplified GT equipment, has been added. 1600GT equipped with electronically controlled suspension TEMS and Cruise control was set as an option. In addition, 4-wheel ESC was set as an option for the late model GT, GTV, ZS, and VS.
It was produced in South Africa under the name of TAZZ until 2007 (the model was discontinued at the same time as the release of the Toyota Auris in South Africa).
