Henry Cary, Archdeacon of Killala 1717-1769

The only surviving son of Mordecai Cary, Bishop of Killala & Achonry, by his wife, Catherine Courthope, Henry was baptised on June 2nd 1717 at St Andrew Undershaft of the city of London while his father was rector of St Katherine Coleman, three streets away.

Henry graduated from Trinity College, Dublin where he was a student from 1733 to 1737. He later became Archdeacon of St Patrick's Cathedral, Killala, in 1742, under his father. He owned a house in Portarlington, County Laois and a nearby farm at Westmeath which he settled on his son, Henry in 1767.

The Dublin Gazette of Tuesday 15th Feb, 1742/3 reads: "Rev. Henry Cary, son of the Bishop of Killala was on last Saturday married to Miss Mary DEERING, a young lady of great beauty, merit and a fortune of ₤5000 sterling." Mary was the daughter of Henry Deering, by Mary King, daughter of Sir Robert King, of Rockingham. Henry Deering was the son of Charles Dering, Auditor of the Exchequer in Ireland, by his wife Margaret Moore. Charles Dering was a son of Sir Edward Dering, 2nd Baronet, of Surenden-Dering, Kent.

Henry and Mary were married in St Mary's Church, Dublin on Feb 12th 1742/3 by prerogative lycence (sic) i.e without having to wait the 3 weeks of banns. They had three sons:

   *1- Henry b.1743 Killala, of Westmeath married Anne GORE 3rd da. of Annesley Gore, Esq., of Beleek, Co, Mayo, and had 9 children.

   *2- Capt. William b.1746/7 IRE d.19/7/1834 (Gentleman’s Magazine 1835) Bevere, Worcs.   
        He married 1stly to Henrietta BROCAS, dau of Rev Theophilus and had 3 children: Rev Henry Francis Cary, translator of Dante; Colonel William Robert; and Georgina Henrietta.  
        William married 2ndly (in 1782) to Martha Muchleston (of John Muchleston of Merrington) on 27/6/1782 at St.Mary's, Lichfield and had 3 daughters.  
        He married 3rdly (in 1804) to Mary BUNBURY and had another daughter.

   *3- Capt. Robert d.5/11/1800, bur. French Church of St Paul, Portarlington, Capt in 62nd/3rd Foot.  He joined the army in 1765, serving in Ireland and Gibraltar.  
       After he retired    he was a J.P. in 1796, living in Portarlington.  He married Henrietta BURRELL and had 6 children.

Mary Dering died in Killala, and the four grandchildren buried near her father-in-law, Bishop Mordecai Cary, were probably those of Henry and Mary. In 1756, Henry remarried, to Deborah HAMON (daughter of the Huguenot Colonel Isaac HAMON of Portarlington), who survived him and by whom he produced more children:

   *4- Charles, merchant in Dublin d.17/9/1786 aged 25 (bc.1761), bur French Church, Portarlington who married Susanna RAINSFORD and had a daughter.
   *5- Lt. Isaac married 1788 to Catherine ORMSBY  (He served with 60th Foot)
   *6- Charlotte (d.1810 buried French Church, Portarlington) a regular visitor with Lady Caroline Dawson. 
   *7- Capt. Arthur ?b.1762 d.1812  bur. Portarlington aged 50 yrs married 13/1/1787 at St Marie’s Church to Letitia DAVY (widowed daughter of Rev George ORMSBY) and had 5 children.
   *8- Frederick married Sarah HUNT
   *9- Mary Anne?

In Henry's will he states that he had purchased a Lieutenancy of Foot for his son, William; an Ensigncy for Robert, with money paid out for a Lieutenancy of Foot for him also; and £300 to set his son Charles up as a Merchant in Dublin. Also in the will, witnessed by Peter Hamon, William Burrell and Edward Geoghegan, he bestowed an annuity of ₤30 to Hector Hamon (probably brother of Deborah's father, Isaac, and father of Peter, the witness to the will). Henry’s seal on his will was a swan rising, which is the same as the Carys of Devon.

Henry is buried in the right angle of two low stone walls behind French Church, Portarlington, under a stone reading "Sacred to the memory of Rev Archdeacon Henry Cary who departed this life the 27th of October 1769 in the 52nd year of his Age. This stone was laid by his afflicted widow Deborah Cary."
