Thegooduser - You didn't link this .js file to any other of your main .js files that the system uses when loading pages. The way you have it now just makes it an unused script that's just sitting there... It won't work unless you link it. I modified your common.js file for you to fix the problem - you can see what I did here. I hope that makes sense, and I hope this fixes your problem. Hi Rehanxidrisix! I believe that your message is in relation to the notices I left on your user talk page regarding the addition of content without citing reliable sources. Please make sure that you search and locate reliable sources to verify the content you're adding is true and correct, and then cite those sources in-line with the content you're adding. The links I provided for you here will provide you with more information and examples of how to do these things easily. Please let me know if you run into any questions after reviewing the guidelines I provided to you and I'll be happy to answer them. Happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:27, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Amaury! Welcome back :-)! Sorry for the delay responding to your message here - I was away taking care of a few real-life things ;-). I've added pending changes protection to the article for one year. If this doesn't slow down the amount of unverified content being added to the article and if the problem still continues and at a high editing rate, let me know and I'll be happy to take another look. Keep me posted and let me know how this does. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:30, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

You were wrong.

This edit is in no way a violation of the edit restriction. The restriction is about linking to external behavior of other editors. A blog website is not an "editor", and the blog in question does not mention any off-wiki behavior by an editor. It cites a couple of forum comments, but they were not written by Wikipedians! If you imply they were, you're the one violating the WP:OUTING policy. I'm writing this because he was indeffed for an actual violation of the edit restriction. If you agree that you were wrong, the block can be perhaps reduced to time served (as the first actual violation of the editing restriction). wumbolo ^^^ 19:37, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)We can't take any off-Wiki sources. Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 20:04, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Wumbolo, and thank you for leaving a message here with your concerns and input. Without going into much detail, it was pointed out and agreed by someone in ArbCom that this was a violation of the user's editing restrictions. I can't state much more than that, since most the conversation took place with an expectation of confidence. If you believe that the user's action did not violate the editing restriction set by ArbCom, and if you believe that the sanctions applied in response to the behavior observed were improper, you're welcome to discuss this with ArbCom directly by contacting the committee. That's completely within your right and your prerogative to do and I absolutely won't hold it against you should you decide to do so. Either way or either result that comes from doing so won't bother me, and I'll be happy to do what's right (that, overall, is what's important... I want to do the right thing). I won't, however, be the correct person to contact in regards to this user's indefinite block as someone else has performed this action, and I took no part in the discussion or decision to do so (that I remember at least). I appreciate you for taking the time to leave me this message and express your thoughts and opinion; my user talk page is open to all - even those who disagree with me. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to discuss them with you. Thank you for expressing your honest thoughts and doing so in a civil manner. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:42, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

deletion of user talk page

Hi User talk:Mascha2013 was deleted few days ago. I though I left a welcome message in her page (she is also a friend of mine) but I don't remember. BTW i think I will put a welcome message there but since you deleted it, I am informing you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:31, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Alexmar983! Please accept my apologies! I just realized that I missed your message here and accidentally skipped over it without responding. I'm so sorry! The deletion on Mascha2013's user talk page had nothing to do with you, and it didn't delete anything you added there. An LTA user was going around and mass-messaging random users to be... disruptive. My deletion on this page simply removed the disruption that was added. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. I apologize again for missing your message here. That was extremely unacceptable on my part; please forgive me. Best regards and happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:18, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
User:Oshwah no problem. I though I left a message there but I didn't and I wasn't sure at all. It was unusual that someone actually entered that talk right in that moment so I wanted to be sure. Is this allowed on Wikipedia???

Just wondering but, User:TheUltamateBoss3900 has "Hello this is my new Wikipedia account please do not go to my other account User:TheBigBoss3900 because I have officially retired from that exact account again I am terribly sorry." on his main user page. Just wondering if this counts as a Sock puppet seeing as BigBoss's last edit was 9 August 2018 and UltamateBoss first edit was 21 August 2018. I also found it odd as BigBoss has several warnings on their talk before "Retiring" and creating a new name. 2601:805:8205:7E0A:3C91:80FD:98F1:EF02 (talk) 05:41, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Investigating... Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 21:01, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I took a look at the user's accounts, and it seemed like none of them were blocked. But I tagged one the new userpage as a U5. Seems Strange.... But they are not blocked on both accounts. I leave this for Oshwah or another admin/user to take a look. Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 21:05, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi there! Sorry for the delay responding to your question here. I personally would not consider this situation an abuse of multiple accounts, as the user clearly associates his/her latest user account with the older account he/she used to edit Wikipedia under. There may be a perfectly legitimate reason that the user decided to "retire" under the old account and begin using another one (i.e. to stop harassment, under a clean start, etc). So long as the user only uses their latest account (which appears to be TheUltamateBoss3900) and never uses the accounts in order to avoid scrutiny, evade blocks, or in a manner that attempts to imply or state that they're participating as two different people - then it's fine. I don't see a block log present on either user account, but if one account did become blocked (as an example) - depending on the reason and circumstances behind the block, it would be up to the blocking admin if they feel that its necessary that both accounts become blocked. I personally will usually extend indefinite blocks placed upon a user to all of the user's alternate accounts as well (depending on circumstance, of course). Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:40, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Editing of Lee Rowley page

Hi again Oshwah,

Have hit another issue with a page. You kindly helped with the Robert Buckland page last month and that is fine after another editor blocked the guy when he registered a new account and attempted to delete material again.

Having updated over 100 MPs pages, of different political parties, I have only had issues with two of them (Robert Buckland and Lee Rowley). I had moved onto editing MPs from another political party this week, but had a quick check over old edits. It turns out that since I last edited the 'Lee Rowley' page earlier in the year a number of unregistered user(s) have been deleting all the stuff I put in for balance. In one case, an entire section relating to a case reported by the BBC had been deleted. None of the edits ever come with an explanation on the talk page. Despite my best efforts to get them to debate content on the talk page, they refuse to. The style and approach suggests they may just be one person (possibly the subject of the page itself) and as they are unregistered users, they don't edit anything else and are difficult to 'talk with'. The most recent unregistered user has seemingly only made 1 other edit, which was last month and involved vandalising another page (for which the user 'tucoxn' sent them a warning). On the Lee Rowley page, they keep just deleting everything - twice now in 24 hours. They claim they are acting in line with the edits of 'others', which in real terms is unregistered user(s) from 4 different IP addresses, which may just be the same person (them!) Given that they are unregistered and are potentially using multiple computers, I guess they can't be blocked, but is there something else that can be done to the page?

Incidentally some of my editing has been flawed, but I have responded to advice from other wiki editors and changed the way I do things as a result. As such, i'm more than happy for other experienced editors to jump in and critique what I have written on this page (and any others).

Thanks, Impsfan (talk) 20:35, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Perhaps if Impsfan didn’t delete from talk pages and the users own talk page attempts by other editors to discuss contributions Impsfan would be able to reach consensus. Instead you ignore debate. Your edits are delete anything positive about an MP and add spurious material often with minimal connection to the actual subject. You breach NPOV guidance frequently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.132.186.144 (talk) 22:41, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
I just looked through Impsfan's contributions and I don't see any edits where Impsfan removed any content from a talk page at all (except for his own user talk page). User's are allowed to remove warnings and messages from their own user talk page (see this guideline section), but the removal also implies that they've read and acknowledged those messages. It looks like the accusation of "ignoring discussions" and "adding or removing content that shouldn't be" go back-and-fourth. If you're going to accuse another editor of breaching Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy (as you said above), you must also provide evidence alongside those accusations (such as diff links) to back them up. It's a violation of Wikipedia's civility policy to accuse another editor of repeatedly violating Wikipedia policy (an accusation that's very serious) without any proof or evidence. Regardless, it looks like this article has been the subject of recent content disputes and edit wars, so I've added extended confirmed protection to it in order to direct all users involved in the dispute to take the discussion to the article's talk page here. That's the fair and right thing to do that will ultimately resolve the issues and concerns being expressed here. Please continue (or... start) your discussions there, respond and provide input in a civil and peaceful manner, and please don't update or modify the article any further until the discussion comes to a consensus. I wish everyone well, and I hope that the discussion comes to a peaceful and successful closure. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:12, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Oshwah. The problem is that the other unregistered user(s) refuse to debate points on the talk page. I started the process on the talk page earlier in the year and they just ignored it and carried on vandalising the main page. I'll try and start again on the talk page and we will see if they engage this time. Unfortunately you put the protection on the main page just after they had vandalised it again i.e. they deleted all the fully sourced links provided (again). I'll request it is reverted back in due course and the protection is then left on semi-permanently to prevent further vandalism. Thanks for taking the time to look into this. Best regards, Impsfan (talk) 20:13, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
You're welcome; always happy to help. Good luck :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:10, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hashemites

Hello Oshwah I changed Hashemites to Hashmi because that is the correct word to describe the members of the tribe as it is general knowledge in that part of the world. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiman1x (talkcontribs) 04:10, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Wikiman1x, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation of the edit you made to Hashemites. The reason I reverted the change was because the word that you modified differed away from being the same as the article's title, and I grew concerned. I would advise leaving a note on the article's talk page here explaining your edit and why you changed it (as you did here) so that other editors can provide input - especially when I see that you've made a few edits to this article and other editors have also reverted them. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for taking the time to message me here and explain your edit. Hi Mohit1212, and thank you for leaving me a message here. There are a few things that you need to work out before creating an article or adding any content about this team, else you'll wind up spending hours if not a full day of time writing content here just for all of it to be removed or deleted and your time completely wasted. Is this sports team notable? I also note that your account is very new. Because of how new you are to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial and before you do anything else here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you (including article creation and content expansion). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them, and led to them being saved hours (or in your case, days) of time and frustration. This is obviously your choice, but I would not skip going through this tutorial. It's for your benefit, and it will help you. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks again for the message and I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:52, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

I think he likes us reverting him so he can replace it. It puts him up a rung? Thanks again. I'll send you more hail. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 10:52, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jim1138! You appear correct - the edits between the indeff'd account and the IP user are nearly identical. I've blocked the IP user for block evasion. Let me know if you see any more and I'll be happy to take care of it ;-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:54, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
36 v. Materialscientist's 168... As Arny said: ! Any other ideas about this? Taking the articles off my watchlist might be the best solution. Thanks and cheers Jim1138 (talk) 11:20, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Jim1138 - LOL..... ohhhh, Arnie.... ;-). That's up to you; if the articles are flooding your watchlist and causing annoyance, definitely remove them for a bit. I'd have to look into how often this is going on before I could determine if protection is appropriate here, but if this is an ongoing thing that happens at a higher than an occasional rate, then that would be a potentially good option. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:23, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Jim1138 - Yup, protection it is... lol. I've added semi-protection to the three articles you listed here and for three months. Are there other articles I should look at, too? Let me know. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:26, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
That's the three the anon's been "correcting". I wish he would talk, maybe he is correct... I don't know if the anon knows he can access via another IP or not. Thanks again. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 12:09, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Jim1138 - No problem :-). You could try reaching out, but I give it a low probability that the user will see it. Worth a try though, maybe... but I'll leave that up to you. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:13, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Message re. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (HG) (3.3.3)

In reply to this message, of February 2018: Hello, I'm Oshwah. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page.

I cannot recall the exact text that I added to that entry, but I my source was personal: my best friend, somebody that I have known for 38 years, was Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's high school science teacher at CRLS. She told me what he was like as a student in her class. So what you deleted, will remain deleted, which is very sad. I wonder why you did not ask me first, before deleting it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.231.177.34 (talk) 11:40, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation and your questions. Unfortunately, we cannot accept content where a reliable source is needed or the content is challenged or based on information where a source is expected, and none is provided or doesn't meet the criteria for being considered reliable. The source that you explained here is not acceptable, as this constitutes original research. Things such as "I saw it", or "I live here", or "I personally know the person" - do not qualify as reliable sources within Wikipedia articles. In a brief explanation: You cannot cite yourself or your friends as a reference like this. Would you consider content that's written based off the personal recollection or experience of a complete stranger as reliable if you were reading an article, document, or information? Of course not. How silly, right? How would other people go about verifying the information you added to the article if the only "source" is someone's recollection or experience and nothing else? What if, 100 years later, someone reads this article? How would they know that the information is valid and true? They of course wouldn't be able to know for sure... These questions are hypothetical, but will hopefully help explain the reasoning behind the existence of this policy. All content on Wikipedia must be either attributable or directly attributed (cited) by a reliable source. This is why your edit was removed. Please let me know if you have any questions about Wikipedia's policy on no original research being allowed or how to identify a reliable source, and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, I hope that my response has helped you to understand, and I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:08, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

North Africa page

Hello Oshawa. How are you?, It has been long time no talk, I hope you are doing well. There is a suspected sock who was disruptively editing the page of North Africa, he was refusing to engage on the talk page and after many warnings, he finally did and once I refuted his claims, he refused to continue the discussion on the talk page and came to attack me personally and threaten me on my page which is also an additional evidence of his sock puppetry as Middayexpress/Soupfrone had the same exact habit!!!! Look at the discussion here on the talk page!!! [1].

He again reverted my edits and disruptively edited the page ( and attacked me in his edit summary ) after refusing to engage on the talk page and then requested protecting the page and his request was accepted without reverting his disruptive edits, I have also requested page protection when this suspected sock disruptively edited page. However, the admins declined my request for this reason!! [2]. I would be grateful if you revert his disruptive edits (which wasn't supported by consensus) while keeping the page protected.

Moreover, I am VERY VERY sure that this guy is the banned user Middayexpress, I have been battling this banned user for quite a long time and I know him VERY VERY well, this guy has been vandalizing Wikipedia for many years as well as he is the most persistent sock puppeteer in Wikipedia, he should hold a Guinness record in sock puppeting!!. The only thing which I did and was unprofessional while fighting this suspected sock this time might be dealing with him in a harsh way, but I am a human, not a robot and any human with blood running through his veins and a bit of scientific honesty will get angry If he watches vandals and unchallenged sock puppeteers destroying one of main the sources of knowledge in our world. Unfortunately the persistence appearance of people really like Middayexpress/Soupfrone on Wikipedia very much discourages the good users from editing and are why Wikipedia occasionally gets a bad name.

I have already filed a sock puppetry report against this suspected sock here [3], I would be grateful if help me in taking an action against this user, you can check my report and evaluate the behavioral evidence and leave your thoughts which will be highly appreciated. Thank you. Ryanoo (talk) 13:08, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi again, Ryanoo! Thanks for the message and your request for help here. Whew, that's a lot of information... but from what I'm seeing based off your SPI report, you suspect that Itaren is a sock user of Middayexpress. Are there any other accounts or users involved in this dispute on North Africa or it's talk page? Or is it just this Itaren account? On the SPI report you filed: did you make sure to add as much detail as possible and include as many diffs between the accounts comparing their similar habits as you could find? You also included the diffs where the user used similar uncivil comments toward you, correct? I can definitely take a look at the SPI and the evidence you provided there. If there's diffs you listed here but not in the SPI, add them to your evidence explanation in the SPI. Information that's here but not there won't be helpful, obviously ;-). Make sure all of that is provided so that an admin or clerk can easily go through and look at the evidence and we'll make sure that your report is looked into as soon as possible. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns while this SPI is awaiting review, action (if applicable), and close - and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks again for the message; I assure you that myself (or another admin if they beat me to it) will begin looking into your case as soon as we can :-). Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:41, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah! Can you please delete these two pages? I afraid users may see the G7 template when editing my user talk page. Thank you. Abelmoschus Esculentus 13:44, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Abelmoschus Esculentus -  Done. Let me know if I can do anything else for you and I'll be happy to do so. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:02, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

hi I'm trying to write an article about a young successful man , but I don't know how to published it . need your help thank you ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by James concely (talkcontribs) 14:31, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi James concely! Welcome to Wikipedia! Because you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial and before you do anything else here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you (including article creation and content expansion - what you're asking me about here). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them, and led to them being saved hours of time and frustration. This is obviously your choice, but I would not skip going through this tutorial. It's for your benefit, and it will help you. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks for the message, I welcome you to Wikipedia once again, and I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:34, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

I fixed things, And ways to contact me if you need an editor or something.

I edited and removed some things, but if you would like to undo the edits on your Flag of Chile page, You can. I also apologise for my 'vandalism', I was just trying to be funny but your bot resolved it. I'm also going to try to be as helpful as possible, so if you need anything edited but you don't have any time, i'm much obliged to do it for you unless you deem it unneccessary. Thanks in advance. Also, if you attempt to reach me but fail, my Steam Account name is 'fat' And my profile picture is a fat man with Joker Face Paint. if you cannot reach me on both this platform and Steam, I won't be abe to respond at the time because i spend mostly all of my time playing games or marketing on steam, so steam is your best bet. another way to reach me i will send via SteamChat, My discord name and number. I won't post it here because of all the people that can see this message publicly and can S P A M me with friend requests, voice calls, and everything in between. the steam thing is easy to deal with as i can block randoms, but to know i don't block you on accident, reply listing a steam user *If you have one* so i know who's you. I don't spam on steam and i'll very rarely try to message you when you don't want me to, and i'm going to update my status with a Service, Respect, And Trust Pledge on Thursday, November 8. 184.63.86.15 (talk) 16:36, 6 November 2018 (UTC)A Helping Hand, Across All Platforms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.63.86.15 (talk) 16:18, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a message here! So long as your edits are constructive and are making good faith attempts to improve the project, they're welcome to stay. No Wikipedia article or page belongs to me; they're not "mine". In fact, per Wikipedia's policy on ownership - nobody "owns" any articles, pages, or content here (unless the content is copyrighted, then in that case it violates policy being added here must be removed). You're free to be bold and fix and improve anything you see that needs to be improved.
That being said, please know that malicious or intentional disruptive editing such as vandalism, adding hoaxes or false/incorrect information is not allowed and will result in being blocked if it continues. We're an open community that encourages everyone to jump in and help us expand and grow the encyclopedia, but please do so constructively :-). It's common for new users to "test the waters" and maybe add one or two stupid edits (heck, even I did it when I was very very new here). But just know that it doesn't help us, and we need users and people who can contribute here and are willing to help us.
All that aside: If you're interested in being part of the community and working with us to help grow and expand the project, you should consider creating an account and use it when you edit or contribute here. There are many benefits to using an account that you'll like, and you'll be able to use it to go through our new user tutorial, learn more about our policies and guidelines, and help us to build the project or enforce them. If you have any questions or need help with anything, let me know or feel free to ask at the Wikipedia Helpdesk. Myself or another editor will be more than happy to help you. Thanks again for the message and the honesty regarding some of your edits. I hope you have a great rest of your day, and I wish you happy editing. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:03, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

I made an account under a name that sounds like the Mysterious Stranger's Dollar Store name

Hey Oshwah, Just messaging to say that I made an account, and I'm the same person that was talking about my steam and wanting to edit for ye. I honestly am doing it for the niceness, but it seems that a bot is leaping to the vandals before I can reload the page! If you need any Help at all, even if it's correcting vandal work or fixing page errors, i can do it. :)| Another thing, if you know anybody that can Port and run a script from a document and make it function, please tell me, i'm hard at work rooting out a myth on ROBLOX that got involved with Albert AKA Flamingo: RUST_010. I got his cloning script from one of his myth games, but some of the files i couldn't decrypt, and the following files are locked tight in the script: "LocalStorage", "SavedPlayers", and "LocalPlayers". Leaving you with that and a kind Thank You for understanding my goofy edits not realizing it was vandalism because i have no idea how to give you a barnstar, Until I Repost a message here again, A Helping Hand, Across All Platforms. (talk) 20:23, 6 November 2018 (UTC)A Helping Hand, Across All Platforms.

Hi A Helping Hand, Across All Platforms.! Cool! I'm glad you decided to create a user account! The question you should be asking isn't what I think you should be doing, but instead what you would like to do on Wikipedia? If patrolling recent changes, reverting vandalism, and warning users is what you'd like to do, awesome! If it isn't and you'd rather be doing something else (or if you see yourself enjoying something else), then don't feel like you have to contribute or participate in areas that you don't want to. You're volunteering your time - you should be having fun while doing so and enjoying it. Else, what's the point? Just let me know what you'd like to do here, what interests you regarding Wikipedia and where you'd like to be, what your favorite subjects or topic areas are, and I can definitely point you to a place where you'd fit right in. If you haven't already done so, go through and complete Wikipeda's new user tutorial! It'll help you to learn the basics, show you how to navigate around the website, find important places, teach you important principles and rules, and get you off your feet so that you can walk around the site and be somewhat acquainted. I'm here to help; just let me know how I can do so or what questions you have, and I'll be happy to guide you. Welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you find the place you want to be on here, and that you become a long-term member of our community. We need more good users and editors! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:44, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

I figured it out. This is for you understanding my accidental vandalism, and lightened the mood with your early wikipedia days of making goofy edits too. A Helping Hand, Across All Platforms. (talk) 20:31, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad to see that you're seeing the happy and lighter side of things on Wikipedia (lol). We're not strict, ruthless, or mean people here. We're normal volunteers and editors just like you. So relax, enjoy your stay, and let me know if I can answer any questions or help you with anything. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:46, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Rvalette! Thanks for leaving me a message here. Unfortunately, I'm not fluent in French. However, Google Translate helped me to understand. If the image does not belong to the correct user, then by all means - please feel free to remove it. Please add a talk page discussion and explain the removal there so that other editors can provide input, agree, and locate a replacement image. Thanks again for the message and explanation. Hi Abelmoschus Esculentus! So far, it's doing a great job of dragging the attacks down by their feet. Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet right now to resolving this completely where the abuse is 100% stopped and all other anonymous users are able to edit those ref desk pages as usual. For now, we just have to keep eyes out and remove the abuse when they pop up. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:43, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Concerns on FFD/CSD and image handling ( in followup to the IRC chat earlier)....

(Summarised from the IRC chat)...

Given the disputes I had recently with Iridescent and Ritche333 and the feedback I got there (the feedback I got re my conduct is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Iridescent#Splitting_off) I was wanting a second view as tothe closure (and subsequent CSD) of an FFD i'd started and then withdrawn.

One of the concerns, in the feedback I got (at the page noted above) was essentialy "Why aren't you doing basic fixes, searches before you CSD/FFD?", and based on that I felt it might be reasonable that FFD closers, who generally have considerable experience, might be reasonably considered to be applying some fixes/ when closing an FFD (even if the nominal decision reached was to Delete) in order to protect against an incomplete disscussion.

I was thus a little perplexed by what happened with Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2018_October_30#File:DD442.jpg the closer accepted my withdraw, (as following some other information, I figured out the title was registry identifier, and was thus able to add the context I hadn't had previously.), However the closer then nominated the file for F4, despite the fact that it had a source (albiet a very generic one) which had been added in good faith. If there was genuine concern the source added was to generic, wouldn't the appropriate place to have raised this been in the FFD, opposing the 'withdrawl' made? The file had a USGov style PD license tag on lot, and thus based on the available information, in context it was most likely a US Gov photo (although not necessarily definitively).

In another example , way back I'd added an (on review incomplete) information block to File:Mark_Parkinson_(Missouri_politician).jpg and on the information had put "Official Photo" as the source. This was also recently nominated for F4, which I considered inappropriate.

A third concern, occured with File:Richmond_Train_Station_2018.jpg. The upload concerned had been mis-charcterised as being by someone other than uploader. As I'd encountered the contributors uploads elsewhere, I felt it in context considering it as a possible F11, might have been hasty, and let the user that had tagged it, know it was most likely own work by the uploader.

A fourth concern, File:CytherapublishedJudgement.pdf, Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2018_October_30#File:CytherapublishedJudgement.pdf, was deleted, apparently solely on the basis of my rationale, without any other responses being present. The issue was that it was tagged PD-USGov, which was incorrect as the media concerned was an account of a ruling in an Australian court. Had there been a more measured response, it may have been possible to consider if it had in fact been Crown Copyright, and thus the date needed to be considered (as it may have expired 50 years ago rather than more recently, or if it was an official work that could be re-licensed, given that the Australian govt had in recent years been publishing considerably more material under Wikimedia compatible licenses.) My recollection was also that the file itself had some kid of license response at the back of it. If someone was willing to reconsider this, it's the sort of file on which a request for undeletion may be appropriate.

I may be over-reacting (and in asking about these concerns, I appreciate given my own "reckless" approaches in the past, I'm not in the best position), but a second look at how these and some other FFD/CSD handling issues have been dealt with by some contributors would be desirable. The seeming bias towards deletion at FFD (amongst some closers) is also a more generalised concern.

Apologies for a long post, but I wanted to be sure I'd said what I wanted. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:17, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi ShakespeareFan00! Sure - basically, everything mentioned on IRC has been brought here and with no details missing (just stating this for the record). I asked you to bring this here and as a discussion on-wiki, and you have done so :-). I'm going to ping Majora as somebody I know who is much better in this area of Wikipedia than I am. I'm hoping that he'll be able to provide some good input here and be able to recommend the right course of action to take. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:35, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. The edit you made here doesn't belong on the article itself. If you have concerns like this, you need to add this as a discussion to the article's talk page. This is where you can express concerns and start discussions, and other editors can contribute and add input and resolve the matter. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:40, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Oh, it was nothing! To tell the truth I wasn't really bothered by that at all, so don't feel bad! I just wanted to make sure that you hadn't simply reverted my edit without actually looking at it in detail and/or merely based on the silly-looking appearance of the edit summary I provided (which, I admit, looks kind of stupid at first glance). Nope, it was simply a case of (literally) elbowing the keyboard while I was turning to grab something. I'm glad things are well for you, and I hope you have a great rest of your day. Thank you for being understanding and civil over this matter. It's sadly becoming a more rare thing to see around here. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:09, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Confessing an important thing

Well, you said that i should ask other editors. So here is that for you. If u know a soccer fan who has been watching football for atleast the past 15 yrs, then ask him what kind of persona Petr Cech has. I added a simple and straight forward content quoting him as "one of the greatest of all time" which was said by two of the most biggest names in football history Jens lehmann and Sir Arsene Wenger. But he said that it is a subjective content. So why is that subjective content on other people's page who are far less respectable than him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:204:A60D:77D1:26F:64FF:FECD:6FED (talk) 04:56, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

I think that this is something that you should discuss directly with the editor who reverted your change. Unfortunately, you were uncivil toward him and made personal attacks instead of simply being respectful and inquiring about the removal. You also indicated in your previous message that you have three accounts and that they are currently indefinitely blocked from editing Wikipedia. This means that your edits here are in violation of policy because you're evading your previous blocks. You need to log into your original account, request an unblock of that account, and take things from there. Otherwise, you'll just be blocked on-sight every time you try to edit or talk to someone here (for block evasion). I wish you well and I hope that you do the right things so that you can contribute here legitimately and positively. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:01, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Boing! said Zebedee! Thanks for the message and for letting me know. A minor note on a reverted edit in Gnome sort

Hi, Oshwah :)
When you look at the IP-editor contribution at Special:Contributions/140.78.224.1, then their most recent edit you've reverted here Special:Diff/867563987 does no longer seem such 'good faith' as it did at the first glance. --CiaPan (talk) 08:43, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

P.S.
Many, many thanks for all your work for Wikipedia! --CiaPan (talk)

Hi CiaPan! Thanks for the message with your thoughts here, and for the very kind words. I agree that the edits by this user add up to show that this user is up to no good. If any more disruption comes from this IP, let me know and I'll take care of it ;-). If you need anything else, let me know and I'll be more than happy to do what's needed. It's good to talk to you again, and I hope we speak again soon. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:41, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

A lot of experimental editing

What do you make of this? That's either a lot of experimental editing, or something else I can't quite work out... thoughts? -- Longhair\talk 09:41, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Longhair! When I run into new user accounts who make repeated edits back-and-fourth within their own user space (on their user page or their sandbox), they're usually trying to get their edit count above 500 so that they can keep it as a sleeper and it'll become extended confirmed once 30 days pass. This is usually pretty obvious though - they usually just add and remove one letter or number from a page, or something similarly small and simple... this one's quite a bit different than what I normally see when socks, LTAs, or troublemakers try and do this, so I can't say for sure if this is the case. I'm going to take a look at the user's sandbox and history, put some content through Google translate to get an idea of what they're doing, and I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the message and for bringing this user to my attention. I'm also quite curious as to what they're doing and what they may be up to. Feel free to follow-up if you find anything, and (as you already know) you're always welcome to message me here if you need anything and I'll be happy to help. Will follow-up with what I find; give me a bit to check it out. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:49, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I had a good look. There's the odd edit here and there, but nothing substantial. The sheer number of edits to the sandbox suggest Wikipedia is being used for a purpose it wasn't perhaps designed for. Let me know what you learn... I tried :D -- Longhair\talk 09:51, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
I asked. Here's their reply. Seems legit. -- Longhair\talk 13:39, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Longhair - Cool deal; thanks for asking them about it. Seems okay to me as well. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:43, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Reason for edits to eddy current separator

Sorry I did forgot to put in the justification for the changes.

The present page claiming that eddy current separators were invented in 1984 by Juillett is not incorrect. Eddy current separators were manufactured well before that and I believe the first patent for such a device was in 1969.

Psubpser (talk) 15:04, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Psubpser! Thanks for leaving me a message here and for explaining your edit and what was going on. No worries; it's not a big deal and we've all done it. You just want to make sure that you leave an edit summary with each edit or change that you make on Wikipedia - just summarize what you did and why, so that other editors will understand and know what you're doing when they review these changes later. Do that, and you'll be just fine. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message and I hope you have a great day. Happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:07, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

My edit to Dafuskie Island was reverted with a warning.

You reverted my change to Dafuskie Island, but my edit was legitimate. Dafuskie Island does not exist in Georgia or anywhere else. The originator of that wiki is likely, based on his description, mistaking it with Daufuskie Island, which does exist. Please put my edit back in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rh20301 (talkcontribs) 5:13, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Rh20301, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. How do you know for sure that this island doesn't exist? What if you're wrong and the editors who crated and expanded the content in this article are correct? I highly recommend that you express your concerns by visiting the article's talk page and starting a new discussion there so that other editors can review it, respond, and look into the matter. This is the best solution here, as it will result in your concerns being looked into by a number of other editors, and the information verified as it should be. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. I wish you a great day, and I hope the discussion ends in a positive and beneficial resolution and close. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:42, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Edits to "Boycott" page

Hello Oshwah,

I was hoping that you could respond to my comments about the changes I made to what I saw as the bias of the entry for Boycott. I explained that:

I made the edits because I was concerned that the original text on BDS was not neutral. I changed it to include additional context that I think readers would find helpful in appreciating the nuance of this issue. For example, Nazism was a movement that spread "across Europe and North Africa," but to describe it that way in a wikipedia article would be a disingenuous distraction from important historical context. For that reason, I think it's too simplistic to call BDS a "worldwide" movement. Also, I'm not sure what the evidence is for the "civil society" element and why that descriptor is supposedly the most "neutral." Finally, I think it's important to mention that many people consider the movement to be antisemitic, i.e., a movement to deny Jews the right of self-determination in their historic homeland. BDS is not mainstream and it is not without controversy. Ignoring that nuance in the name of whitewashed neutrality serves neither the readers nor true neutrality.

Thank you for your response. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.107.16.121 (talk) 15:30, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation of what you're trying to edit and resolve. Your edit here (the one I reverted), however, adds commentary and opinionated content that's not appropriate for an encyclopedia. Your edit modified a statement to say that a campaign was "built on false historical narrative, that aims to destroy the State of Israel", and that "BDS denies Jews the right of national self-determination". This is content that is not worded to reflect a neutral point of view, and is not in compliance with policy and will be removed. Please review Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, make sure that you understand everything stated on the policy page, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be more than happy to answer them and help if you need it. Thanks again for the message, I hope that my response here helps you to understand why your edit was removed, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:38, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. What if the entry were changed to state: "Many scholars have opined that BDS denies..." with a link to articles to support that claim. Also, I think it would be appropriate to have some support for these supposedly neutral claims about "civil society." And, as I said, I don't think the "worldwide" comment provides the proper context. Are there edits we could make to the entry that more accurately reflect the controversy surrounding this movement? Why wouldn't that help advance the cause of neutrality? As it stands now (as I have argued), the wording is not very neutral because it ignores important historical context and significant controversy over the true aims of the movement. If it's neutral to say that the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses was "antisemitic," then I think it's also neutral to explain that many do consider BDS to be antisemitic because it aims to deny the right of Jews to national self-determination. 199.107.16.121 (talk) 21:00, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
That change is much better. It's always much more neutral and proper to word things and state exactly who has this opinion (and provide references in support). Instead of writing (for example), "rock climbing is a dangerous activity" - where it sounds like you're saying this and can be translated as being biased, instead write who is saying this exactly (and provide references, of course). So the sentence should state, "the coalition for banning rock climbing has stated that rock climbing is a dangerous activity" (I've of course made the organization up, but you know what I'm getting at). Do be careful with the words you use when you state "who believes what", and make sure to avoid "weasel words" in your statements. Phrases such as "many people say...", "some believe...", or "experts agree..." are often empty attributions and are only dressed with authority from the statements made such as these, so be mindful of how you state things. It sounds like you're going in the right direction and you're beginning to understand and improve your content writing based off of our discussion and what you've read from Wikipedia's guidelines - that's really awesome and I hope you continue to improve from here. If you run into any more questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them :-). Best regards and happy editing - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:33, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Modification of "Advanced Function Presentation"

Hi Oshwah, I believe you have edited a modification of me in error. To my knowledge a link to a free tool that helps to understand the format described is not against the rules. I have seen this with other format such as:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF

At this page it provides just the same information.

Thank you.

Hi Maxkleiber! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns and your input regarding the revert I made to your edit here. Please accept my apologies; I saw the domain and I felt that it was an attempt to advertise or spam out links to one's own website or domain. Do you own, maintain, or have control of this website or domain? I just want to ask to be sure before I make any further changes to the article from here... Thanks :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:55, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah,
No I do not own the Domain, but I use this free tool ever so often, so I thought it would be useful for others as well.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxkleiber (talkcontribs) 16:09, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Maxkleiber - Thanks for responding and letting me know. Okay, sounds fair and reasonable enough; I'll restore your edit back to the article momentarily. As you can probably imagine, I revert and remove many spam links and users' attempts to advertise or dish out links to their own websites or domains to get visitors and clicks - probably at least 50 a day. I apologize for interpreting this as one of those such cases, and I hope that my removal didn't cause any frustration upon you. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else, and I'll be more than happy to do so. Thanks again for the messages, and I wish you happy editing! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:18, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah,
Thank you for the feedback and reverting my change.
I am actually glad someone is looking through the edits, since otherwise Wikipedia would be not as good as it is.
Markus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxkleiber (talkcontribs) 16:32, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Maxkleiber - No problem; always happy to help in any way I can :-). If you run into any questions or get confused with anything, please don't hesitate to let me know or ask me for help. I'll be more than happy to lend you a hand ;-). If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you (including article creation and content expansion). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them, and led to them being saved hours (or in your case, days) of time and frustration. It's obviously up to you, but I would not skip going through and completing it - it will save you a lot of time and frustration. Good luck to you, and I hope you have great day! Happy editing! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:41, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

HA! Thank you, Kpgjhpjm, for the barnstar and for giving me a good chuckle here. I (as well as many others) tend to frequently bump into edit conflicts on here. I'm at the point where I have to archive old talk page discussions after they're maybe 1.5 days old. Otherwise, this page would get huge and would become hard to manage and quickly... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:25, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

CAPS

Why did you use all caps in your first edit summaries? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 16:44, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Thegooduser - Because I was brand new to this project, I was much younger than I was today, and things were much different back then compared to as they are today as far as recent changes patrolling goes. Back then, it consisted of going through the recent changes page and picking out edits to see if they were vandalism. When I'd find one, I'd have to undo the edit and then leave each warning manually. I thought that leaving each edit summary in all caps would make it easier for others to notice it when reviewing the users. Yeah... times were very different than today... and I obviously had my lack of experience to add to it all as well... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:50, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Chesterfield County, Va. high school vandalism spree: It continues!

Howdy! The same kids who were attacking Matoaca High School and Manchester High School (Virginia) appear to be at it again today on other schools in their district: Monacan High School and Thomas Dale High School, at a minimum. Could you please take a further look into this? Hi Julietdeltalima! Sure, no problem - always happy to help :-). I took a look at all three pages, and I quickly found that 2600:1003:B450::/44 was a range involved with editing each article. I had to individually block the remaining two IPv6 addresses, as they were both from unrelated ranges and the collateral damage network reservation ranges were much too wide to be able to block. Editing Timon of Athens

Hi Oshwah. Thank you for your message. In fact, I did not remove the edit I have just moved it to the Adaptations content section and correct two inaccurate information. Robert. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robert L. Crawford (talkcontribs) 00:04, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Robert L. Crawford! Thanks for leaving me a message and explaining what you were trying to do here. That's completely understandable and I'm sorry that we got a bit tangled up into some confusion. In the future, you'll want to perform these content moves in the same edit instead of removing the content and then adding it back in two different edits. It saves you time and potential headache (these moves can get quite complex as you can imagine), and it's much easier for other editors to see and understand. You also want to add an edit summary with each edit that you make on Wikipedia and briefly describe what you're changing any why. It's accepted normal practice to do on Wikipedia for all editors, and it also helps other editors see and understand what you're doing and why. Do these things consistently, and you'll be fine and won't run into any issues. Thanks again for the message and for the explanation. If you have questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to help. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:24, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hausa people.

What I added on Hausa people is completely verifiable with references. Nothing controversialI. For instance, if you could take the time to google Paul E. Love joy book “Salt of the desert Sun ...” 1986. This extract is from that book “Hausa tanners made leather aprons and loincloths, cushions, bags, sandals, saddles and other horse ... So- called Moroccan leather was in fact often leather imported from the central Sudan or other parts of West Africa“. Actually am new to Wikipedia so I have not digested all the rules. I will take the time to compile all references and re-edit. Right? Ppdallo (talk) 00:20, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ppdallo - I appreciate your message here. I was concerned with your edit here, as it changes a population data from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 which is usually not common to see in legitimate edits unless they're following or undoing disruption by somebody else. Did you verify that there's a reliable source to support the current data as it stands right now? It's very important that we have sources here (especially with such specific information like data, dates, numbers, etc) so that verifiability is consistently kept and we know that the information is both accurate and true. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message and I hope you have a great day :-). Hi Tumaca70, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your thoughts and concerns. Since you claim to be the person that the article covers, you need to contact the Volunteer Response Team in order to have your particular issues and concerns handled. They have the tools and training available to verify your identity and that you are who you say you are, as well as to handle your level of concerns regarding the article's content. Hi

Hi Oshwah,

I just noticed you marked my page for deletion. I was wondering why you did that. I created my page as I'm looking to enter local politics soon and I need to have a wikipedia page so people can know more about me and my past. Please let me know if you have a specific concern with the page and I will go make the necessary changes.

Best Regards, Akshay — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akshay Ravipati (talkcontribs) 10:52, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Akshay Ravipati! Please see Wikipedia's policy on user pages and what generally is allowed on your user page vs what isn't allowed on your user page. Generally, when users create a bunch of content about themselves on their user page, make no other edits outside of it, and then go stale after they've done this - this can be interpreted and translated that the user was here just to create a page about themselves in order to host it, or user it for networking or social interactions, which is not the purpose of user pages nor is it what Wikipedia is to be used for. This is what led to your user page to be tagged and deleted. Please review the policy and let me know if you have any questions about it, and I'll be happy to answer them. I appreciate the message and I hope you have a great rest of your day. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:15, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Your edit filter

Your filter shows something weird about the editor who last edited this page . Is it a false positive ? Kpgjhpjm 10:54, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kpgjhpjm! A condition in the edit filter is that it flags edits by new users if they mention certain Wikipedia editors by username. In most cases, it flags LTA and sock puppet trolls with their edits that do so. However, in this case - yes, it's a false hit and can be ignored. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:05, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Kpgjhpjm- HA! Oh man, what a trip through memory lane! Well, I was a new editor to the project, much younger and less mature (this was during my adolescent youth... lol), and I obviously wasn't a model editor at the time. :-P ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:08, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
Lucky for you that you weren't blocked by a rouge admin. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 12:59, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
JamesBWatson - HA! Indeed... with the disruptive edits I made at the very beginning of my contributions and over 11 years ago (pretty much right before I started getting into recent changes patrolling), those edits certainly could have gotten me blocked and I most certainly could have been as a result... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:45, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
I did wonder about blocking you for it now; I would first edit Wikipedia:Blocking policy to take out the bits that say things such as that blocking may not be justified "if the actions have since ceased or the conduct issues have been resolved", and then quickly block you before anyone reverts it. However, I suppose I would have to be seriously rouge to block you so long after the event, so I'll let you get away with it for now. However, be warned that I'll be on the look out for any more of the same kind of trouble-making, and Stop icon you may be blocked from editing without further warning as soon as I manage to catch you at it. It's in the past and I'm a changed person, I swear it! I won't make stupid edits (okay, I can promise that)... umm, I won't add vandalism or make disruptive edits like what I did with my very first edits here! I promise! Undoing G5 speedy deletion

Hi Oshwah! You recently speedily deleted Sanjay Kumar Tiwari pursuant to Praxidicae's nomination of the article for speedy deletion. Whilst she was right in her tagging, I would like to think that Tiwari—if I am recalling that article correctly—qualifies WP:NPOL as having been a member of a state legislature (vidhan sabha of a state). Hence, I would think that a restoration of the article may be in order here. Regards, SshibumXZ (talk · contribs). 13:34, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah, Thanks for your message. I see that you removed an external link that I added on Diane Abbott's wikipedia page just now. The external link contains several hours of debate and talk footage from Diane Abbott and I thought it would be a legitimate and useful resource. It would be good if you could let me know what you think. Many thanks, EJM EJM808 (talk) 13:53, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi EJM808, and thanks for leaving me a message with your input and concerns. I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. The reason I removed your external link from Diane Abbott was because I was concerned that the media you were linking to might be copyrighted to the network that was broadcasting the footage. Adding content to articles by copying them directly from copyrighted websites or works, or even providing external links to copyrighted content, represents a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policies. Flash floods in caves

Flash floods do periodically trap and or kill cave explorers, just as they do hikers in slot canyons. Underground stream passages in geologically young active wet caves are a very dangerous place to be in the event of rain storms. The danger is very real - example links that cite this very real danger:

Look up the NSS cave accident reports for documented cases and statistics. Falling and drowning produce about equal numbers of caving accident fatalities. In one case, six boy scouts drowned.

Hi there! Thanks for the message! I'm not denying that flash floods can cause danger to human life in many different aspects and ways. I removed your edit because I felt that it may have been worded in a manner that isn't compliant with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. However, I also see that other sections in the article have used this word as well. You're welcome to restore the text if you feel that my assessment is incorrect, and please accept my apologies if this is so. I hope you have a great day, and I thank you again for the message with your concerns. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:33, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm here to accept your offer, thank you

Dear Oshwa,

I ran across you somewhere along the way a few months ago, and you came across as someone who is really friendly and truly enjoys helping people. So, now that I ran into problems, I went searching for you.

I am a current math teacher, and former US History teacher. I am also older than you (age 47), which is my weak excuse for having piss-poor computer skills.

I began editing Wikipedia the way I imagine most people do: I'd be reading an article and see something obviously factually incorrect, or heavily biased, or find a typo, or whatever, and was too irritated to just let it pass. At times I got into trouble because my weak tech skills got in the way, e.g. not initially being able to figure out how to enter a source.

Now I've run into a larger problem.

I have always been one to to speak truth to power, which has gotten me into trouble all my life. (Growing up the youngest in a large family was probably the catalyst.) I have now actually been banned three different ways, which simply represents the elite trying to crush the simple truth-tellers. Duterte of the Phillipines seems to be the role model of certain WP administrators. 1. I was edit-banned for 31 hours. 2. I was banned from editing anything relating to the Israeli-Arab situation for 30 days. 3. I was banned from editing bioraphies of living or recently deceased people for 30 days.

This specific Wikipedian Duterte disciple, Doug Weller, has refused to respond to my inquiries: When the 31 hour overall ban showed up, I responded to him by email, asking, in essence, why? No response. When the 30 day Israeli-Arab editing ban showed up, which he had explained was due to my having edited such matters before I reached 500 edits, I sent him an email explaining that it was a misunderstanding: I thought I was to avoid articles related to the Israeli-Arab matter. My edit was on the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez page, which I had not realized was included in the 500-edit rule. Weller again ignored me, and continued with ban #3, the biography-of-living-or-recently-dead ban, which is pretty much an across-the-board ban in my book.

When the 31 hour ban hit, I responded to him by email: The Orwellian nature of the ban is such that I could not respond on his talk page, because I was banned, natch.

Now that 31 hours has passed, I am able to add to a talk page, but I would rather go to you. I am fairly convinced that it is just a matter of time before a new ban hits me, perhaps permanently. I am now a target.

I know there is some way that I am supposed to be able to appeal Weller's ban, but I can't figure it out, because when you combine my lousy computer skills with the fact that I am typing on a Galaxy S6, it makes it pretty rough.

A little background on me: I am an anti-Trump conservative. In certain parts of the internet, I get viciously criticized by die-hard Trumpians for being honest about Trump's character issues, but at least they can't shut me up. On WP, I get into trouble when addressing naked liberal propaganda that sneaks its way into a WP article, which is when apparatchiks like Weller can ban me for telling the truth.

(Important note: When I taught US History, I was so careful to teach it down the middle that my students were actually pretty convinced that I was a card-carrying liberal. Just because I am a conservative does not mean that I am not open to both sides of an issue. Some WP administrators seem to only see their own side, though.)

If you look into the specifics of where I got into trouble, which is with the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez article, and - to a lesser extent - the Jeff Flake article, you will see that my edits supplied the appropriate sources which clearly supported what I changed. Perhaps more importantly, WIKIPEDIA'S OWN ARTICLES(!) supported what I wrote. And yet I was not only reverted, I was banned!

The Ocasio page has a section regarding her political views on Israel, which is misleading to the point of being nearly false. I corrected the record, leaning heavily on the fully edit-protected WP article 2018 Gaza border protests, as well as by adding multiple sources. Nonetheless, some outraged editor accused me of "severe BLP violations", as well as "defaming" Ocasio. When I asked him for any examples of such, he ignored me, and instead sent me out for banning, which Weller then complied with. Neither individual has yet cited a single word that I added which does not belong, not one.

In the Jeff Flake article, there is a badly misleading phrase that claims that Flake voted to "change Senate tradition" (perhaps not verbatim, but close). I removed that claim because it is not terribly accurate, as I explained in the accompanying box with edit, and as shown by my links, and as also shown in the WP article Nuclear Option. No one seems to care about that, either.

Again, it is bad enough to see these articles propagating nonsense. But it is flat-out disheartening to learn that some administrators see WP as a propaganda machine, banning all who disagree with them.

I am asking (begging?) you to please get involved. Right now, I am really down on Wikipedia. It looks like a bunch of propaganda. Administrators are supposed to police malice, not ban views which differ from their own. Again, to be clear, the result of my edits was not that the article represented my POV, but instead reflected more balanced articles, which is what WP should contain - or so I thought.

I hope you can help.

Thank you, Vcuttolo (talk) 06:44, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) First, comparing administrators (or other editors, for that matter) to autocrats is not likely to result in a successful editing career here.
Second, your edits to Ocasio-Cortez's biography were rejected because they were wildly inappropriate and POV, having problems with original research, synthesis and poor, partisan sourcing (the Free Beacon is a right-wing propaganda site). You use an article about apparently-violent protests in October to support a claim about a statement that Ocasio-Cortez made in May — that's obviously not how it works. You need to step back, read and understand policies like WP:BLP, WP:RS, WP:NPOV and WP:V before you dive headfirst into controversial political articles, particularly those of politicians you obviously personally oppose. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 08:50, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Vcuttolo, welcome to Wikipedia. I'm Kevin, and I'm another administrator around here. I can tell you care a lot about this topic and about making Wikipedia better. We do have a habit on Wikipedia (because we have so many bad edits, as we see it, submitted to Wikipedia compared with a tiny number of people reviewing those edits) of referring someone to a large number of links containing summaries of our policies and practices, and then blaming the user for not understanding our standards and practices. I know that can be abrasive, and I can tell that may be part of what is frustrating you.
That being said, I've reviewed the edit NorthBySouthBaranof refers to above and it was completely improper. We have a giant mass of policies, guidelines, and interpretive essays for a reason, and while I completely understand that you may not know the whole corpus of them, the community expects that (1) when a link is directly mentioned in a message to you, you read it and try to understand why the editor linked it for you; and (2) when you have the idea that someone disagrees or might disagree with something you're going to do, you ask (quite simple) before you do it. If you have not thoroughly read the links in the messages that have been left for you, I would advise you to do so before your next message to ask for help. I've had a look at your talk page, and I see a number of occasions where editors have left messages for you (containing many links to relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines) that haven't been responded to.
It's getting rather late here (Pacific Time), and I haven't covered a lot of the things I was hoping to in this message, so I might follow up (or Oshwah might cover it himself too). One last, very important, note about your topic ban. Topic bans are "broadly construed", extend to all namespaces (including talk pages!), and remain in effect until successfully appealed. For example, a topic ban from "climate" would prohibit editing the "Weather" article, of course, but it would also prohibit editing the "Climate" section of the "California" article, editing about climate-related people, or discussing climate/related things anywhere on Wikipedia. In your case, I suggest that an appeal is overwhelmingly unlikely to be successful and you'd be better off taking this month off to review our policies and practices. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 09:27, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Vcuttolo, and welcome to Wikipedia! As L235 has stated above, we have a lot of different policies and guidelines that govern how content should be written, worded, referenced, cited, and verified. The best thing that you can do in order to start learning these different policies and guidelines is to go through our new user tutorial and complete it fully. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:44, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Editor making changes without a consensus

Hi Oshwah,

It's Prisonermonkeys here, posting from an IP. I was hoping that you could help me out with something. Normally I'd go to ANI with this, but the page is currently protected from editing.

Could you please take a look at some of the recent edits made by DeFacto, particularly at 2018 Formula One World Championship, 2019 Formula One World Chsmpionship and 2020 Formula One World Championship? In the past week or so, he has been extensively editing the markup in the articles to enforce a variety of Wikipedia policies. Normally I would have no problem with this, but he is making wholesale changes to complex markup without consulting other editors and with no regard for the implications his edits are making. That markup is complex and parts are possibly redundant, but it was carefully crafted to add features (such as sortability) to tables without compromising the accessibility for tablet and mobile readers. Any changes really should be made in consultation with other editors, but DeFacto has pointedly refused to do so. To further complicate things, I have reason to believe that he does not understand the policies he is enforcing.

I have tried to remind him to discuss things with other editors and have pointed out the significance of the markup, but he has largely ignored me. I'm hoping that since you're an admin, a reminder about the need to work collaboratively will carry a bit more weight. 1.129.109.172 (talk) 11:04, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Prisonermonkeys, I'm not sure why you're trying to make a big deal over this, all I've done is make minor MOS recommended changes to the markup, with each edit explained and referenced to a MOS page in the summary. None of the changes I made alter the appearance to the reader at all, and each is recommended specifically for accessibility. Now talking about being collaborative this edit was also made by IP 1.129.109.172, so your goodself I presume, adding a whole column to a table without any prior discussion. -- DeFacto (talk). 12:57, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Prisonermonkeys - Assuming that you're really who you say that you are - why are you editing from an IP address and not from your user account? It looks like you haven't edited from your account in some time... what's going on? I obviously can't simply take your word for it; impersonation attempts happen frequently from anonymous users, so I hope you understand if I'm not inclined to believe this information from the get-go. DeFacto - I understand that you believe that your edits aren't major changes to these articles, but if other editors have issues with your changes or disagrees with them, you do need to listen to them and work with them on the articles' talk pages in order to resolve the dispute. Resorting to edit warring or other non-collaborative means is disruptive. The anonymous IP range that posted this message is now blocked from editing due to edit warring; I don't want to see this happen to you as well. Remember to follow Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol and best practices, and make sure any disputes are peacefully discussed. This way, the article content is reflected using the highest quality content possible. If anyone has any questions or further concerns, please let me know and I'll be happy to help. I wish everyone good luck and happy editing. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:57, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Keep me posted and let me know if I can help you or provide any more input to point you in the right direction, and I'll be more than happy to do so. Disruptive Twinkle usage

I wanted to ask for your opinion on disruptive twinkle usage. Has happened at least twice I am aware of. First incident happened here. Second incident happened here. The user is using Twinkle to revert every edit on articles that he doesnt agree with. Rather than discuss, time and time again, he has simply deleted articles rather than open a merge proposal. Also, he has been involved in at least three edit wars since September as well. FigfiresSend me a message! 01:29, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Figfires, and thanks for leaving a message here with your concerns. While Twinkle can be used to make undoing changes much easier, it would be an abuse of the tool only if standard rollback was used to undo good-faith edits (since it leaves only a generic edit summary). In the diffs you linked me to, they were not using rollback. On top of this, rollback can be used like any other revert method if the user provides an edit summary explaining the reason for reverting the edit (see this section of the rollback policy). While I can't go after anyone for the individual reverts you pointed me to here, if they're engaging in edit warring and disruption in place of proper dispute resolution protocol, that's obviously another story. You should do your best to discuss disagreements and disputes on the articles' talk pages as soon as you notice such a dispute that you're involved in. However, if edit warring is occurring and despite attempts to discuss the dispute and despite the involved user(s) being warned on their user talk pages to stop, report them to AN3 so that an admin can handle it. While Twinkle is a great tool to use and those who use it accept responsibility for their actions should they use it improperly, it's not considered abuse of the tool simply because they're using it to undo a good-faith edit but how they're using it to do so. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks again for the message and I hope you have a great day! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:17, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, we have tried to talk it out with him. He has at least 3 standing edit war warnings in the past few months. The articles he removed with Twinkle wouldn't rise to the level of edit warring imo since he only made one reversion. I know external chats and such have no bearing here, but it seems like he removes things based on how he personally feels rather than by wikipolicy. Would that be considered vandalism? Additionally, myself and a few other people have tried to talk to him without any success. He doesn't seem to even acknowledge what has been posted on his talk page. I get that Twinkle is a tool used to make undoing changes easier. It seems that this user is using a feature in Twinkle that is similar to rollback without actually using (or even possessing) rollback permissions. Actually, there is another instance in which he blanked a page without any discussion. The article may have been created a little too soon (maybe a day or so), but that still doesn't warrant removal when the storm is rapidly approaching land and watches have been issued. I hate to report him, but would that be the best course of action in this situation? FigfiresSend me a message! 22:08, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
Figfires - No, that wouldn't be considered vandalism in this case. Remember that Vandalism is where someone maliciously and purposefully makes edits and changes to Wikipedia with the intention to troll, add inaccurate facts, trash or mess up content or pages, obstruct or defeat the project's purpose or disrupt other users from being able to do so. It seems like the user is making what he/she thinks are good changes but is being unresponsive when disagreements and disputes arise from them. Since this is a pattern of behavior, I'd open an ANI discussion next time the user engages in edit warring and disruptive behavior and I'd discuss the user's long-term and repeated issues. This way, the community can investigate the repeated issues and someone can take action since the disruption is continuing at that time. Don't wait until an episode of behavior turns stale or until after you discover the same behavior later to report it there - admins won't be able to do much if it's not currently in progress and the behavior isn't recent. Continue attempting to communicate to the user and point them to discussions on the articles' talk pages that you've started. If anything, it builds documentation to help with action being taken at ANI, since it will show that you've tried your best in good faith to work things out and make it easy for the user to participate, you've tried multiple times, but despite your attempts the user has failed to respond or participate and the behaviors kept continuing. Let me know how things go and if I can help you with anything else, and I'll be happy to do so if you do. Good luck with everything, and I hope that things come to a successful and peaceful conclusion either way. :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:33, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Anon removing content

There is a anon who is quite bound and determined to remove content from at least a dozen or more articles. The anon often makes a single edit via mobile then the IP changes. So, blocking is probably not useful. I have been going through numerous edits and made a list here: User:Jim1138/Single use IP. It contains fourteen articles that seem to have a common thread. The IPs seem to all be in Taipei and the edits are all regarding Chinese history WWII and shortly thereafter.

The anon often makes references to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/User-4488 as in "sock of 4488" Also the anon often avoids reverting autoconfirmed users. Seems to prefer reverting older IP edits which have the same effect as reverting the immediate changes. I suspect to avoid notifications to A/Cs. Often calls editors who revert their edits a "sock of 4488"

I just went through that list and undid the anon's edits and got a rather rapid reaction from 49.215.129.109 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) I left an EW notice to no effect.

Any suggestions? Cheers Jim1138 talk 11:50, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ronz - I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. It looks like the IP has stopped editing since November 12, so it's obviously much too stale to do anything now. If the edits and the same behavior of adding unreliable sources to articles continue from this IP address, let me know and I'll be happy to take another look and handle it. Missing edit toolbar

Hi Oshwah or watchers, my edit toolbar has been missing for several days. Any idea where I can go to track down a solution? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 18:58, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @BilCat: Do you mean the "Edit" bar next to the "View History bar"? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 21:51, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
No, the edit bar above the editing screen. I found the answer at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2018 November 7#Missing edit toolbar. - BilCat (talk) 00:50, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - This is the editing toolbar within the editing window that adds functions like Bold, Italics, etc, correct? I believe you turn this on and off in your preferences... are you still experiencing this issue? Did you modify anything in your preferences? Maybe install a new add-on in your browser that might block Javascript or anything else from running? Let me know. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:34, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, that's the one. The one that is missing is the 2006 version. It was phased out. See the link above for more information. - BilCat (talk) 21:42, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - Ahhh, thanks. I missed that link somehow... Yeah, they've been updating and phasing out a lot of old things this year. Older tools are typically phased out and replaced when they rely on older methods or functions to do what they're supposed to do and those methods are about to be replaced or changed to where the toolbar would no longer function. As an engineer myself, I'm sure that they figured that they should update the edit toolbar while they're at it and while "back-end stuff" is being changed. As crummy and as frustrating as it is to be forced into change and into using something different than what you're used to, it's necessary to do if our goal is to implement new useful features and make editing and contributing easy for everyone (especially new and novice editors). Either way, I'm glad that you managed to figure out what was going on. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns and I'll be happy to help. My talk page is always open to you (as you know); stop by any time you'd like. Cheers :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:19, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
I understand the need to update, especially back-end stuff, but I HATE the newer toolbars. Why is having a clearly-identifiable button for each function considered "old-fashioned"? The Wiki engineers need to remember that older folks, even ones like myself who've always been computer savvy, take longer to adust to new things, especially as our eyes get older. I've heard some people are working on an add-on feature for the old-style toolbar, and I hope they get it working pretty soon. - BilCat (talk) 22:30, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - Make sure that you leave feedback and express these thoughts in the relevant feedback discussion so that those who are implementing such changes can see and review them. It's important that everyone has a say and that they leave feedback regarding changes like this. Regardless if the feedback is "good or bad", it's important that it's heard and taken into consideration nonetheless. Otherwise, if you don't say anything - there's probably a good chance that someone else feels the exact same way that you do but is also not leaving feedback (most likely due to thinking that "someone else will"). This is where the "bystander effect" would totally apply... if you haven't heard of it, read the summary paragraph and you'll agree... don't let the bystander effect apply! Say something! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:39, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

BilCat - I'm glad the code works and that you're all set. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:13, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
If you've read the section I've linked to, you'll see the developers aren't very interested in feedback that disagrees with them. I've also seen this attitude over a number of issues, especially the move of the Short description functions from Wikidata to Wikipedia. In my experience, the WMF developers don't care what we users think about their changes. So, beyond some occasional complaints, I'm not going to waste my time leaving feedback in which my specific complaints are likely to be ignored, but is also likely to bring in a bunch of developers who will proceed to tell me they don't care what I think, they're going to do whatever the heck the want to because they can, and I must like it. - BilCat (talk) 22:50, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - I'm sorry that you've been left with a feeling that developers don't listen and don't care. As a Software Engineer myself, that kind of feeling is absolutely something I would not want to see if it were me that's in charge of a project... :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:14, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Rami Cassis - resending

Hello

I see my draft on Rami Cassis has been deleted.

Although I'm a former business journalist and an experienced editor, this is my first time writing entries on Wikipedia.

Can you please advise what I need to do to make the draft more acceptable.

Many thanks

PTooher (talk) 08:58, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi PTooher, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. Your user page was deleted because it appeared to only talk about yourself, and you had made no edits outside of it. I went ahead and restored the page for you and moved it to your sandbox so that you can continue to work on it. Though I have done this for you as a courtesy, I highly recommend that you don't write an article about yourself. It's highly discouraged by the community because this represents a conflict of interest (since, after all, you're writing about yourself). Most articles and content that's written by editors who have a conflict of interest like this eventually wind up being removed, deleted, or reverted and I'd really hate to see your time ultimately wasted like that. Thanks again for the message and I really hope that you take my input and recommendations here. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:54, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Orders of Magnitude

A number of the articles in this template had deletion discussions, with most of them resulting in redirect. {{Orders of magnitude}} {{Orders of magnitude AFD}} What needs to be done to these articles that got redirected or deleted in order to be articles? —Eli355 (talkcontribs) 21:35, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Eli355, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions. If the articles, given a deletion discussion, were found to be better suited as a redirect than being an article on its own, it's best to leave them as redirects unless significant events unfold or the notability associated with the individual articles change. Article content is typically turned into a redirect when it's found by consensus to not be notable enough as an article on its own. The content from the page to be converted to a redirect will sometimes be merged or moved to the parent article if it's found that the content is useful as part of a parent article subject. Take a look at this section of Microsoft Windows as a good example of where content is great for being a part of a parent article, but is also notable for having its own article as well. The Windows XP section consists of a well-written summary of an important section of the parent article, Microsoft Windows, but it also contains a link to the full article on Windows XP if the reader wishes to read more about it. In your case, the editors decided in the AFD discussion that the articles were best suited as a section of the parent article instead of being a separate article by itself. If notability changes and its an article subject that should also have its own article, you can write a full article where the redirect is, then link it from the parent article and leave the content moved there originally as a summary (just like the example I linked you to with Windows XP). Just look at the individual AFD discussions and read through the reasons given as to why the article was made into a redirect. They will give you a good idea as to whether or not it's worth it to consider writing an expanded article and link it to the parent from a section. Make sure that you also have strong knowledge and experience on notability before you consider doing so as well, as failing to make an accurate determination of notability for that separate article first will usually result in hours (if not days) of your time ultimately being wasted. If you have any more questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. I wish you well and I wish you happy editing. Good luck :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:11, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
In particular, Orders of magnitude (density), Orders of magnitude (momentum), Orders of magnitude (volume) are notable enough to be their own articles, while the others should be in a section of the article that they are redirected to. I think that the problem with the three articles listed above is that they do not have enough references, and if they have more references, they can exist as their own article. —Eli355 (talkcontribs) 00:44, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Eli355 - As far as I know and remember, notability is the main thought that governs the the decision to keep an article as its own or merge/redirect the article into a parent article. The availability and length of content is also important, too - but notability is the most important factor. When you say that you "think that the problem with the three articles listed above is that they do not have enough references" - are you talking about the number of references available to locate and use, or are you referring to the number of references currently cited in each article? Those statements mean two entirely different things, as well as the relevance of their existence in this situation and the implications that follow: One refers just to whether or not there's enough references cited in the article's content (which has nothing to do with the notability of the article subject)... the other refers to the actual availability of secondary reliable references that are independent from the subject (such as what you can find on search engines and in text), which is absolutely a factor determined in establishing notability. Any notable article subject can be expanded into its own article... just write enough content that's supported by reliable sources into its own article, and keep a summary in the parent article that points to the main article on the actual subject. So long as it's different enough from the previous article's content and contains additional content than what it had last time, G4 cannot be applied and (worst case scenario) it'll be discussed again in another AFD. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. I hope my response helps and I'll be happy to help if you need any. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:36, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
I was referring to the references currently in the article. —Eli355 (talkcontribs) 00:44, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for the message with your thoughts, input, and concerns. Do you have any reliable sources to support your statement here about the population of different cities in Florida? Your edit here didn't cite any in-line. I also see that another editor, Acroterion, has also talked to you on your user talk page here regarding the sources that already exist on the article, as well as the need to cite reliable sources with your changes - especially with dates, data, numbers, or other such information. Thegooduser (Alerts) (Notices)..... Contributions Log out--Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 02:57, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Ah okay, so you're talking about the notification and alert icons and the row of links that are always on the very top-right corner of every page you visit on Wikipedia. If I remember correctly, there were no notifications at all before the notification and alert icons were first introduced - just the large notification you receive when you have a new message on your user talk page. Other than that, I don't believe that the other links (such as preferences, watchlist, contributions, etc) have changed at all. So basically, you want to remove the notification and alert icons and use the old large template we used to use when you receive a new message. I believe we discussed this before, and someone (I believe MusikAnimal) even chimed in with necessary links to point you in the right direction in order to use the original new message notification. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:54, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Hmm I don't remember, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen =p Maybe you're talking about User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/oldschoolOrangeBar.js? That's really old though -- the removal of the giant orange "You have new messages" banner happened 5 years ago, well before Thegooduser joined us. Or maybe you're talking about phab:T58845, where the preference to hide the smaller "You have new messages" bar was removed. There are some possible solutions in the comments of that task. Anyway, I will again point y'all to WP:VPT. These people sit around all day hitting refresh, waiting for questions like this, assisted by an army of tech-savvy kittens. The truth is, every time you ask Oshwah or me a tech question directly, one of these kittens will die. Save the kittens and direct your tech inquiries to VPT! It's not just about the kittens though -- asking at VPT has the side effect of helping other people who have the same question. If that's the only diff you have as an example to say that you're biting newcomers, then you're much better than many editors that I've had to talk to about this. Why not follow up with this user, leave him/her a message on their user talk page, and see if they still need help? If they're brand new to Wikipedia, you can point the user to the new user tutorial and recommend that they go through and complete it. It's a good tutorial for new users like this person and it'll provide a lot of good information and learning. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:48, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Rami Cassis entry

Hi Oshwah, and thank you for your reply.

There's been a slight misunderstanding - I'm not writing an entry for or about myself (my full name is Patrick Tooher) but about Rami Cassis, who (in the interests of full disclosure) is a PR client of mine.

Apologies if that was not made clear - as I mentioned, I'm new to Wikipedia!

PTooher (talk) 14:32, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi PTooher! Thanks for responding and for clarifying. I've restored the page and moved it to your sandbox - you can access it by clicking here or by clicking the "Sandbox" link located next to the notification and alert icons (top-right corner of every Wikipage you visit). If you need anything else or have questions, let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks again for the messages, I'm glad we were able to get everything sorted out, and I wish you a great day and happy editing! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
PTooher - Oh, and if I didn't mention this earlier: Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through Wikipedia's new user tutorial and complete it fully. It's for your benefit, and it will definitely help you. Good luck and happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:36, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

I was threatened with this person and I can’t make an official complaint? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdh m (talkcontribs) 17:20, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Vdh m - You're of course allowed to file an official complaint with the Wikimedia Foundation if you feel that this is necessary, but you're not allowed to threaten legal action on Wikipedia like what you did here on Lukespen's user talk page. You need to remove that threat from Lukepen's user talk page; it will result in you being indefinitely blocked until you retract this statement if you don't. I just left Lukespen warning for his message on your user talk page and told him that any further harassment toward you (or others) would result in being indefinitely blocked. I'd say that after you remove the threat, report any issues to AN3 or ANI if things continue... stooping to his level and responding to angry messages with even more angry messages will do nothing but make things harder on you... trust me :-). Let me know if you have further questions or concerns and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for the message and I hope you understand. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:27, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
I mailed to the wikimedia adress for help.
Thanks fir helping me — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdh m (talkcontribs) 17:22, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Vdh m - You're welcome. Please remove that threat for me, okay? Lets not have something like this be the reason for you being blocked... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:27, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
I think i deleted it. Will you check it for me? I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed. Please accept my apology. It ‘s a Constant battle with this person who has multiple accounts and i was tired of it. Sorry :) Thank you for the help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdh m (talkcontribs) 17:31, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Vdh m - You're welcome; always happy to help :-). You're close! You just need to go here and remove your threat from his user talk page as well, then you'll be good to go. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
I think i’ve done it right this time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdh m (talkcontribs) 17:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Vdh m - Yep, you did just fine! Your removal from your user talk page was also needed; I didn't realize that you followed up with a threat there as well - I thought that the entire thing was Lukespen. I've protected both articles due to repeated addition of unreferenced content and for two weeks. If issues continue from this user, please don't hesitate to report the issue to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents so that the matter can be handled. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks again for listening and for following my input and advice. Happy editing and best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:41, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
You are very welcome.
As a police officer I am used to do everything officially so I didn’t know I was doing something wrong here. I just wanted to defend myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vdh m (talkcontribs) 17:38, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Vdh m - I understand that completely, but we have policies and rules here that have to be followed... which is why I left you a notice when I saw the threats being made. Just keep in mind what I said earlier: stooping to the level of other editors and responding to angry messages with even more angry messages will do nothing but make things worse. It will never make them better. It's always better to report issues to the appropriate noticeboards for help instead of resorting to making threats. There are many different noticeboards that handle different matters that are available to help. The noticeboard for incidents (here) is where you'd report matters such as this (harassment, threats, and BLP issues). If you need anything else, let me know and I'll be happy to help. Good luck, and I wish you happy editing and a great rest of your day. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:44, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

PM on IRC

Hi, thanks for the help just now. Just so I know for next time, how do I PM an individual on IRC? I haven't used one before except for asking for revdel, so haven't had to do it. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:27, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Girth Summit! I'm glad I was able to help and take care of things with you on IRC :-)! It depends on the client you use, but you can usually PM individuals by right-clicking on their username and clicking on "PM", "Send private message", "Open dialog window", or similar option. If all else fails, you can also send a PM by entering the command '/msg [username] [message to send]' (so for example: '/msg Oshwah Hey I need your help!'). This method usually just sends a message and doesn't open a separate window, however... I usually tell new users to IRC to start a PM conversation by right-clicking. We typically hang out in the #wikipedia-en channel, and you're always welcome to join, say hi, and chat with us! There are many good editors who frequent this channel (I'm on IRC usually 24/7) and they'll be happy to help you with IRC questions, tips, and other cool stuff - you should come join and say hello! Just click here to use your browser to do so! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! I tend to use Microsoft Edge; not sure if I tried right-clicking on names, TBH I didn't want to experiment on the admins' channel! I'm going to try the #wikipedia-en one out now... GirthSummit (blether) 18:38, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
No problem! Hope to see you on there! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:45, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah, can you please remove the ECP from this article? The article has nothing really to do with the conflict. thanks. Sir Joseph (talk) 21:08, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Sir Joseph! Sure - let me give the article a read-through and verify for certain that it doesn't apply. If it indeed doesn't, I'll have no problem removing the protection. Stand by... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:11, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Sir Joseph - Sorry, but this article definitely falls within WP:ARBPIA as well as WP:ARBPIA3. It contains content and information regarding the Law of Return, this section (including the picture) alone show that this article falls within this conflict, and content including, "After capturing the Old City of Jerusalem in 1967, Israel found itself in control of Mount Moriah, which was the site of both Jewish temples and Islam's third holiest site, after those in Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia: The Haram al Sharif (Temple Mount) from which Muslims believe that Mohammad ascended to Heaven" - show a history of conflict within this area. For these reasons (and many more that I could list), I cannot remove the extended confirmed protection from the article. However, if you disagree and still feel that it doesn't, you're welcome to file an appeal at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement to have it reviewed. Don't worry, I won't hold a grudge if you do (lol); what's most important is that the article is properly and accurately handled to reflect Wikipedia policy and actions that are authorized by the Arbitration Committee; it doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong ;-). Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to respond, discuss it, and help you further. Thanks for the message, I hope that you're doing well and I hope you have a great rest of your day. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:30, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, I disagree but I appreciate your response. Sir Joseph (talk) 22:14, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Sir Joseph - Of course; you're very welcome. My talk page is always open to you, and you're welcome here any time you need me for anything. Either way things go from here regarding this article and its inclusion in the conflict or not (again, what's important is that the right answer is found and not whether or not I'm correct) - I appreciate the message, your kind response, and I hope you're doing well. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:19, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi, hope you're about to enjoy your holiday, I found some time away from work and I just wanted to let you know I did file an AE "action" for lack of better terminology at WP:AE about the matter to get more input as you suggested. Sir Joseph (talk) 21:10, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Sir Joseph! Sorry about the delay responding to your follow-up here. I just got back into town from a trip and I'm just now getting caught up with my Wikipedia messages here. Cool deal; like I said, no grudges :-). The right decision made and action(s) taken are absolutely more important to me than whose right or wrong. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:47, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Protection level of Religion in Israel

Please see User_talk:B_dash#Religion_in_Israel, where I and another editor expressed our opinion that the Religion in Israel should not be under WP:ARBPIA and the edit restriction that comes with it. Debresser (talk) 23:09, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Debresser! Thanks for the message and for the link. Okay, I can definitely take a look. I just need to finish up with a few urgent tasks on my plate first and I'll be happy to do so. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:21, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Sure. I'll be waiting here to hear from you. Debresser (talk) 23:27, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Debresser - Okay, I'm at a point where I can put my current tasks down for a bit and take a look at your link... stand by... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:33, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
In my part of the world it is about time to call it a night. So I'll be happy to read your reply tomorrow. Debresser (talk) 23:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Debresser - Ah, okay. I remember this discussion... It was you and Sir Joseph who messaged this user about Religion in Israel and it being extended confirmed protected, and (after figuring out that it was I who applied the protection and not him) you two voiced disagreements with the protection as well as it being under WP:ARBPIA. I'm sure your message here is no coincidence; I just discussed this very same article and thought with Sir Joseph above. Just so I stay consistent, I'm going to refer to my response to him here. I have absolutely no grudges, qualms, or any desire to give you guys a hard time at all - I respect both of your opinions and I think they're important. The fact that I disagree with them is completely irrelevant. However, just as I said to Sir Joseph above, you need to file a request at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement if you disagree so that a proper discussion and analysis with uninvolved users and the community can be facilitated. I'd hold absolutely no grudges or qualms against you if you decide to do so; filing a request there doesn't imply or mean that we're in a heated argument, uncivil discussion, or that anybody's fighting... it simply means that we need the community to take a look and help decide if the article is under WP:ARBPIA and/or WP:ARBPIA3 or if they're not :-). If it comes to the consensus that I'm wrong and that the article doesn't fall under WP:ARBPIA, what's most important is that the correct answer is found and that the right actions are imposed upon the article in reflection to that answer... being right or wrong doesn't mean anything to me :-). If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know and I'll be more than happy to help you further. I appreciate the message, your input, and the link you provided - thank you for taking the time to talk to me. I hope you have a great evening and I wish you goodnight; I'm sure we'll speak again the next day when you're back online. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:51, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Understood. Thank you for your reply. I'll consider what to do next, if anything, at a later time. Have a good one. Debresser (talk) 14:36, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Debresser - You're very welcome. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any more questions or concerns and I'll more than happy to help you. I appreciate you for taking the time to message me with your thoughts and I hope that my response was helpful (even though we disagreed on the matter... haha). I hope you have a great day, I wish you happy editing, and I hope we get to speak again and say hello to one another soon! Until then... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:15, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Rami Cassis

Hi Oshwah

I've made a slight amend in my sandbox to the my entry on Rami Cassis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:PTooher/sandbox and published the draft but nothing has appeared. Is there normally such a long time-lag? Or am I still missing something?

Many thanks, Patrick PTooher (talk) 09:20, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi PTooher! It's good to talk to you again! Looking at the edit history of that page, I see that you made this edit to it where you change a word to become a wiki link that you can click on. Looking at the page and as it is right now, your edit worked and I can click on it just fine. Is that what you were trying to do? If not, what are you trying to change or edit that you believe isn't working? Let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:37, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

JesusFriedChrist

Hi Oshwah and GeneralizationsAreBad. I just wanted to mention, with the greatest respect to both of you, that I think that this and this are a mistake; that is, that the username JesusFriedChrist (pinging in case they want to look in here) contains enough potential for offence that it would be have been better changed. I am not myself religious but I am well aware that we often try to avoid names that might offend ... whilst I find it only slightly grating, it wouldn't really worry me personally whereas my concern is that someone who was a Christian might find it problematical to try to have a collegial discussion about yoghurt or semicolons or privet hedges with someone whose username they saw as a blasphemy/joke/whatever based on a name that is of great importance to them.

I did read the policy and also watched the cute little video with people saying their usernames and it struck me that many of them are just a straightforward label rather than something (a) you might say immediately after a hammer>thumb interaction and (b) something that might at least potentially offend a minority. I absolutely hate it when bleating Christians go "oh you wouldn't tolerate an attack on Muslims like that" but this one does make me wonder, a touch ... I had better shut up now before I paint myself into a corner here!

Anyway, all that said, I am not about to open an RFC or take Jimbo to the European Court of Human Rights, an ting, over this. I just wanted to record my mild disappointment on this occasion, but place it in the context of my great admiration for the rest of your work, both of you!

With all good wishes DBaK (talk) 09:31, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered! Thank you for taking the time to leave me this message and for providing your honest input and thoughts here. You (and anybody else) are always welcome on my user talk page, and your honesty and your input are not only welcome - but they're encouraged... even if they're ill-favorable or in opposition or disagreement with my actions, thoughts, or opinions here. I take no offense, I hold no grudges, and I commend those who do this so that I can respond and work things out. If you know me as well as I'm sure you do, you know that I'm definitely not perfect. Hell, I've made more than my fair share of mistakes over the years that I've been an editor here ;-). However, I've learned that most of the actions I take that are disagreed upon are usually due to me missing something or over a simple misunderstanding, and these messages help resolve them right-quick... so thank you :-)
I didn't see the username as offensive myself, but I may have perhaps translated it incorrectly or missed something. "Jesus Fried Christ" seemed like an insertion of a middle name, and the thought that came to me was "fried chicken", or maybe "fried in hell"? It just seemed very ambiguous to me and didn't explicitly make a statement in my opinion. Usually when I spot a username that's blatantly or obviously offensive and against Wikipedia's username policy, I can see exactly what the username is referring to or trying to convey no question. In this case, I really couldn't... and the response I saw from GeneralizationsAreBad helped assure (in my mind at least) that I wasn't missing something. I'm not passing the buck onto GeneralizationsAreBad at all; I obviously take responsibility for all of my actions and as my own, but it did factor into my thoughts. If you don't mind, can you explain exactly how this username is offensive and what it means? Sometimes I just have to be told in order to go, "Aha!" and understand. I think of myself as pretty "up-to-date" when it comes to things, but I'm not perfect and I will miss things (just like anybody else). Thanks :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:34, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the nice reply. Unfortunately, Real Life is interfering with my Wikipedia time right now so I have only a minute to acknowledge this and to say that I will try to respond properly as soon as I can. I have edited my original remark above to clarify that I am not seeking to overturn your decision; I'm happy to discuss it and I am very grateful for your comments but I am not on some sort of – er – crusade here! :) More ASAP, but please do not hold your breath! :) cheers DBaK (talk) 13:34, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered - No worries; I understand that you're simply discussing the matter, and there's absolutely no rush with follow-up here. Take care of your real-life tasks and obligations, be safe and be well, and we'll be here when you return. Real life matters are much more important than anything on Wikipedia, and I'm glad that you're taking care of yourself. I'll hear from you when I hear from you ;-). Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:45, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Gosh darn it, Oshwah, why do you have to handle everything so competently? GABgab 15:42, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
GeneralizationsAreBad - Cause I got dem skillllz, yo. I be civil and communicatin' to people like nobody's bidness! Boom! I'm too hot for y'all!!! (That was an obviously poor attempt at trying to sound like an idiot... lol) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:00, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
No, you succeeded in sounding like an idiot. Btw, would you also approve "User:MohamFriedMed"? I may change my name to that. - BilCat (talk) 17:53, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - Good, mission accomplished :-P. I... still don't get it... "Moham Fried Med"? Not seeing the connection here... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:09, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Remove the Fried, and spell it as one word. Facepalm Facepalm - BilCat (talk) 18:11, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Or I could spell it MuhamFriedMad, if you think that's better. :) - BilCat (talk) 18:14, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - Okay. "JesusChrist", "MohamMad".... that's it? I'm still not seeing how these are username violations..... just having the words "Jesus Christ" and "Mohammad" definitely don't make them violations... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:16, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Just a test. You passed. :) - BilCat (talk) 18:21, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
To be clear, as a Christian, I do find "JesusFriedChrist" highly offensive, but I understand some may not. One way to determine anti-Christian bias is to change the Christian references to Islamic ones, or some other religion, and watch what happens. The results can be quite fun. :) - BilCat (talk) 18:26, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
BilCat - I grew up religious, too (Christian).... I'm just failing to understand. What does "Jesus Fried Christ" mean? What is it trying to convey offensively? Is "Fried" an attempt to "change the Christian references to Islamic ones" as you stated above? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:30, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Well, one possibility is that is a substitute – returning to my thumb/hammer thing – for the cry "Jesus Fucking Christ!" which I think some would find blasphemous – invoking the great man as a symbol of my anger etc ... seems dodgy, perhaps offensive to Christians? In any case I have to add that I'm not sure that either "Jesus Christ" or "Muhammad", whether fried or raw, would be that great as usernames. The user would presumably not be claiming to BE that person (and if they were we'd have bigger issues to consider right now!) and again some would, I assume, find them offensive because basically they are claiming them for the purpose of levity ... I think in general I'd tend to prefer a path of lesser offence. And maybe the JFC one is a sort of joke in parallel with KFC, and if so is quite funny, but I still think it is perhaps unsuitable for a username here for the reasons I gave before - if it is offensive then it is potentially disruptive because it is going to put the noses out of joint of Christian users who might otherwise want to work collegially with them on a nice article about rivets or bananas. I am not usually massively into censorship but I just think things might work more easily with deliberate good manners. Would I get away with DonaldFriedTrump? I think not ... TheresaFriedMay ... perhaps. It's tricky. But thanks for the chat – it has been very interesting. Cheers DBaK (talk) 18:40, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
No, that's not what meant. "Fried" may well be meant as a substitute for another well-known word that starts with F, but I don't know if that's what the user meant or not. I do think perhaps they are just trolling to overreactions, and are probably best ignored. - BilCat (talk) 18:42, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Probably true, but their one edit so far seemed quite serious and well-intended, which made me think they weren't trolling ... but yes, we will probably never know, and are quite possibly not really benefiting civilization by further discussing it here! Cheers DBaK (talk) 18:57, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
It's possible to have a username that's "trolling" and still make productive edits - they aren't mutually exclusive. - BilCat (talk) 19:05, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Indeed - I hadn't really thought that one through but if course you're right! Less likely perhaps but certainly not impossible. Thanks. DBaK (talk) 09:09, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
That could be what the user is trying to do (insert a word instead of fucking in their username), but remember that we assume good faith here. I still think that the username is too ambiguous to block the account - even given the arguments here... I think we should talk to the user as a first step here. If you two both believe the username to be offensive, I think that the solution is for you two to kindly and civilly talk to the user by messaging them on their user talk page and ask what the username is supposed to mean and (if they respond) tell the user how you feel about it. Maybe ask them to change their username. A block outright though? Too far in this situation... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:53, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah, thanks for page protecting the Prisoner (TV series) article. As I'm sure you saw, the IP editor was very combative and repeatedly rebuffed requests to discuss the article content, instead preferring to revert any changes I made and leave taunting messages in the edit summaries. I stopped attempting to revert his disruptive editing, and came to the page for protecting articles, but in the meantime he continued his assault on the article. He even left a reference at one point that looked good on its face, but when I found a copy of the book online, of course the page numbers he cited did not at all contain the info he was trying to add to the article.

None of that seriously bothers me, but right before you protected the page, the IP added dozens of "citation needed" tags to the article, and this sarcastic message he left on my talk page explains his rationale. I hope you can take a few seconds to at least revert those last 3 disruptive edits, as they were made by the IP purely to be disruptive.

I have no problem with anonymous IP editors, as for a long time, I made my minor fixes and added references here and there without registering an account. Having registered one now, though, I have to admit that I don't see the benefit so far of having one. It seems that the IP editor can revert over and over, and leave threats and taunts on my talk page, and my attempts to be civil resulted in - nothing. The page is now a bloody mess, because I stopped reverting his changes, and he can merrily move on to a new IP address and not be connected to this incident, while I've been tarred with being party to an edit war that I tried very hard to avoid. It seems as though the system actually favors the disruptive IP editor, at least in this case.Ewen Douglas (talk) 18:52, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ewen Douglas, and thank you for leaving me a message here with a summary of what's been going on, as well as your thoughts and concerns. When initially looking at the issue, I was looking through the eyes of someone responding to a protection request. The edits appear to be over content-related matters, and this is why I applied the protection level its set at and responded to the request telling both of you to discuss the matter and come to an agreement. Has this user attempted to work things out with you? Is there an open discussion between you two right now over this article? Apart from the reverts, edit warring, and comments (I haven't yet looked into them to determine if they violate Wikipedia's civility policies but will soon) - I'm just trying to get a sense of how the discussions between you two (if any) are going. It looks like another editor has just reverted the edit adding numerous {{citation needed}} tags here, so you should be at least partially set to go regarding your request. If the user has been uncivil to you, can you provide me a list of diffs that show this? I noted your diff regarding the user's sarcasm here, but if you could provide me with more direct evidence of incivility, it would be extremely helpful in my investigation over the matter. Let me know when you can - thank you :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:23, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah, yes, thanks, another editor took care of the most glaring disruption. The rest is minor: I can brush off incivility, and going through all the diffs and edit summaries to list all of his "you lost the edit war!" comments seems like a waste of time, given that it's not a registered account anyway. I suppose I will try to correct the unsourced info when the protection expires, and if the IP returns, can I drop you a note then? Ewen Douglas (talk) 16:14, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Oh - I just noticed this on the Prisoner tlak page. Obviously the same user, from a different IP, and now apparently threatening to stalk my edits. Might be worth taking a look at. Ewen Douglas (talk) 16:17, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Ewen Douglas - Sorry for the delay responding to your follow-up messages here. Okay, I'll take a look given the new information you provided. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:56, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Ewen Douglas - It doesn't look like any further disruption has occurred on the article since the protection expired. If this changes, let me know and I'll be happy to take a look and take what actions are necessary to stop it. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:58, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, it looks like all's good at this point. Thanks for following up. Ewen Douglas (talk) 17:00, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
No problem; just wanted to make sure that everything was resolved. I didn't want to inadvertently give you the feeling that I forgot about you. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:18, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

So, I hate to bug you about this again, but it looks like that IP is back (at a different address). I could discuss in detail the problems with those additions (the sources cited don't actually say anything about the text added; it appears to be mostly original research, etc) but as that was fruitless last time, I simply reverted the changes and left a note on the IP's talk page. Just wanted to let you know that he's resurfaced. Cheers. Ewen Douglas (talk) 00:18, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Never mind, it's been taken care of. Thanks! Ewen Douglas (talk) 08:24, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Editing of Lee Rowley page

Hi Oswah,

One of the many issues you have helped try and resolve is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Oshwah/TalkPageArchives/2018-11#Editing_of_Lee_Rowley_page

Following your intervention, I followed your recommendation and started trying to debate the content with all the unregistered users (or one user using different computers) here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Lee_Rowley

Unfortunately, as happened a few months ago when I tried to debate them, they have not responded on the talk page. Please can you put a protection on the page again as they will just continue vandalising it again.

Many thanks, Impsfan (talk) 22:55, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Impsfan! I apologize for the delay responding to your message. I was away for the holidays and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails :-). Since the edits made by BigBong2001 on November 17, I'm not seeing any further disruption or edit warring on the article - so I'm going to hold off on protecting the article for now. If the disruption picks back up, let me know and I'll be happy to take another look and take actions necessary in order to stop it. Thanks again! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:02, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Liberty2020! The text you pasted appears to be in German. If you're trying to write and publish an article on the German Wikipedia, please know that I'm not an administrator nor am I an active editor there. You'll need to talk to an editor on the German Wikipedia who can assist you with this matter. If I'm incorrect and you're trying to publish an article here on the English Wikipedia, let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Food Libel Laws Article

Hello Oshwash,

I see that you replaced the "McLibel" Section that I recently deleted from the Food Libel Laws article. Although the article isn't officially region-restricted, I'd argue that everything else about the article points to it referring specifically to food libel laws which have been passed in the US. Indeed, the article's lead section mentions that food libel laws exist in thirteen states. In any respect, libel laws are quite different in the US and the UK, so it would be misleading to have examples of how food libel laws operate in the US and UK intermingled together in one "Notable Examples" section. Perhaps we could compromise and move the McLibel section to the article entitled "English Defamation Laws."

Thank you for engaging with me, Sincerely, Afgmcdonald (talk) 23:05, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Afgmcdonald! I apologize for the delay responding to your message here - I was away for the holidays and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails :-). Sounds fine to me; I was just removing and fixing what I felt was best. Let me know if you have questions or need anything else and I'll be happy to help. Hi GDanthonyYT! I apologize for the delay responding to your message. I was away for the holidays and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails :-). There were a few issues with the article you created. The most prominent one is that, given your username and the name of the article subject you created a page about, it appears that you're this article subject and attempting to create an article about yourself and your YouTube channel. If I'm correct about this, your creation is both a conflict of interest issue as well as an attempt to advertise or promote yourself (which would make the article you created eligible for speedy deletion under the G11 criterion). This is most likely why the article was deleted. Please review and take the time to understand the two Wikipedia policies and behavioral guidelines I linked you to and let me know if you have any questions about them. I'll be happy to answer them and assist you if you do. If I'm mistaken about anything I've said in this response, please don't hesitate to let me know and feel free to elaborate further, and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for the message, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday, and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:25, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

AutoWikiBrowser

How do I use AutoWikiBrowser? —Eli355 (talkcontribs) 23:07, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Eli355: Hi, While I am not that good with AWB, I think This article may help. --Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:43, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Eli355 - As I probably said in my response to you above (in our discussion about notability), I apologize for the delay responding to your message. I was away for the Thanksgiving holiday and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails... I have a lot of them... lol :-). To be able to use AutoWikiBrowser, you need to have the permissions first. It looks like you've requested and were approved for the permissions to use it since you're on the list of approved users. You just need to download and install the program. I believe that it requires a Windows Operating System (Windows Vista or later) to use. Once you've done this and you can launch it and sign in without any errors or trouble, you're all set to begin using it. The user manual that you should refer to and read through entirely is here - you should definitely read it and make sure any specific questions you have are answered before you begin using AWB to make changes on Wikipedia. Remember that you're completely responsible for your edits - even edits made from automated tools like this one. I was approved to use AWB a long time ago and before I was an admin on Wikipedia, but I didn't use it much beyond requesting access, installing the program, launching it, and making maybe one or two changes. I just didn't find the tool right for me. If you have any more questions or need other help, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them or at least find you the person who can :-). As I said above in our other discussion above: I hope you had a great holiday and I wish you happy editing! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:49, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Sheldybett! I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. I was away for the holiday visiting family and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia messages and emails here :-). If this is a request for suppression about anything, please email me by clicking here so that the details of your request remain private. If this is just a concern regarding some page moves that ended up being made by mistake, don't worry about that at all. I've done that plenty of times by mistake... it happens and it's not a big deal at all :-). Mistaken page moves wouldn't be something that's eligible for suppression, nor would it be something that would even be eligible for revision deletion. In a nutshell: we cannot and we do not hide or redact mistakes simply because they were such; mistakes have to stay visible. Like I said though, I have plenty of ridiculous and outright stupid mistakes that are visible and that you could find and see... they happen... If I'm incorrect and your request involves more than hiding simple mistakes from public view, please let me know via email so that I can help you. You'll need to describe exactly what needs to be hidden and why, and provide exact diffs to the revisions or logs that need such - it just makes it easier for me to find. If you have any questions or concerns that you can ask without disclosing anything specific that shouldn't be talked about here, let me know via email. Otherwise, let me know here. Either way, I'll be more than happy to answer them and help you. I hope you had a great holiday and I hope to hear back from you soon. Hi there! I've fixed the article subject's height with my edit here and added a link to the IMDb biography you listed above. I understand if you weren't sure how to cite a source in-line with the changes you're making in an article, but I'm failing to understand why you changed the height from an incorrect value to be another incorrect value compared to the source you provided to me with your edit here... that doesn't make sense to me, and this is why I reverted the edit you made due to not citing a reliable source (as well as why other editors do this, too). If you have questions or need anything, let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for the message and for the reference nonetheless; despite my question about your edit, the fact that the article subject's information is correct is what's most important. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:14, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Just started using Huggle

Hi, I've just started using Huggle. Could you please tell me what "Meta information - ORES Goodfaith: 364 Bot score: 48 ORES Score: -272" means? Thank you. JACKINTHEBOXTALK 05:24, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi JackintheBox! Please accept my apologies for the delay responding to your message here. I was away for the holidays and I'm just now getting caught up with all of my Wikipedia emails, messages, requests, etc... As you can imagine, there's a lot of messages for me to go through :-).
So, the information you pasted here (in general) is an evaluation as to whether or not the particular edit you're looking at is bad faith vandalism or disruption. To be more specific: It is a list of results from Wikipedia's different scoring systems that are given to each edit. They use different methods and processes to determine the likelihood that the edit you're currently reviewing is bad-faith vandalism, harassment, or disruption. With ORES and most other tools and bots (such as ClueBot NG, generally the higher score that an edit is given means a higher probability that the edit is malicious or bad-faith disruption. In the readout that you pasted above: ORES scored the edit a -272, the bot score came out as a 48 (very low), and the ORES Goodfaith score (something I personally haven't looked into much at all) came out as a 364. This readout tells me that edit you were currently looking at on Huggle at the time you copied this information for me to read had a fairly high likelihood of being legitimate and not made in bad faith. You can read more information about these different scoring systems by navigating to the ORES wiki page and ClueBot NG's user page (both I've provided links to above, of course). More information may also be available by looking at Huggle's Manual. Please let me know if you have any more questions about Huggle or how things work, or if you need my help or input with anything else... I'll be more than happy to help you out. I hope you had a great holiday and I wish you happy editing and good hunting with cleaning up vandalism! Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:38, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi,

How do I make my wiki page live if I am adding to a wiki page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexSmith289 (talkcontribs) 20:24, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hi there! If you created a draft in your sandbox, simply click the "Move" button and state a reason why you are preforming the move. I saw that you may have by accident moved your userpage to the mainspace. Before doing so, I strongly suggest you to read This Page. Thanks.--Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:20, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi AlexSmith289! What's the location of the page that you're currently working on? It looks like your sandbox is empty and I don't see where you've created another page before... If you're looking to create a new article, you should refer to this page and follow the wizard and have it help you with this. Since this is your first time creating a new article, there's a lot that you need to check and verify before you start writing, and the wizard will help you with that process. If you haven't already gone through Wikipedia's new user tutorial, I highly recommend that you do so and before you do anything else on Wikipedia. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be significantly helpful to you (including article creation and content expansion - what you're asking about here). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was very helpful to them and saved them hours if not over a day of of wasted time and being left feeling frustrated and feeling like you can't succeed here - that's absolutely not true. This is obviously your choice, but I would not skip going through this tutorial... It's for your benefit, and it will help you a lot. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks again for the message, I hope you had a good Thanksgiving holiday, and I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:48, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Protection Level Change - Alpine Armoring Inc

Hi Oshwah,

I writing to you in reference to the Wikipedia page for Alpine Armoring Inc. I noticed that you had changed the protection level for this particular page on 14th September 2017. I wanted to make a few changes to the same and was wondering how to get access. I would really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

Hi Mahathi.Vantedhu! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. The page is currently under template protection, meaning that it can only be edited by users who have template editor user rights. It basically makes sure that only trusted users who are vetted and have demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with editing and carefully implementing template code can make changes to those kinds of pages. It prevents someone from messing up a template that's widely used by thousands of articles or visible on a page that receives a high number of views (such as this one) and making a huge mess... lol. No worries though - If you have changes that you think will improve the page, you can still have those changes saved there. All you need to do is create an edit request on the page's talk page and include why it should be updated and what your changes will improve, as well as exactly what on the page needs to be changed or replaced in order to implement your changes and improvements fully. You'll just follow the instructions at the link I provided, save the edit request, and a template editor will review and apply the changes shortly afterwards (assuming they don't find any issues or problems). Do you have your changes saved to a sandbox within your user space or at another location? If so, be sure to include a link to that page in your request as well so that they can view it. It makes life much easier on them by doing so :-). Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any issues or problems with filling out that edit request or filing it on the page's talk page - I'll be more than happy to help you if you get stuck anywhere. I hope my response was helpful to you, and I wish you a great rest of your day and happy editing! Cheers :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:17, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

"Removed [Ali Shahroudi] because I have fixed the issue;"

I just got a message from you. I guess I am new to this. This page was removed after many years. It is about the American Artist, Ali Shahroudi. The editor who removed it said he could not find any references. I provided the references by coping the entire page from Everybodywiki.com. He also claimed he could not find the artist on the net! I searched and found many references to him, but it has to have the connection to his style: expromanticism. Please restore the page. That is what I was trying to do.

(====) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glenrhine (talkcontribs) 16:45, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Glenrhine! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation and your concerns. The article you're referring to (Ali Shahroudi) was recently deleted due to the outcome of an articles for deletion discussion. It ruled by consensus that the article should be deleted and hence this is what happened. The deletion discussion has since closed; you cannot add any input or discussion to it now, but you can view the discussion here if you'd like. I understand that you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and should be restored, but disrupting a Wikipedia shortcut page and replacing it with your modified content is not the proper way to go about resolving this. It's disruptive and can result in being blocked if you were to repeatedly do this (especially despite being asked to stop) - so don't do that ;-).
If you wish to create a new article on this person and with the content and references you found, you can do this by following the instructions available on this page. It will allow you to create a draft article and give you all the time you need to expand and fix everything and have it ready for review, approval, and publishing. Just follow the directions on the page and it will help you to get started. If you have any questions about this process or need any more assistance, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you. I hope you have a great rest of your day, I wish you good luck with getting this article published from your draft, and I wish you happy editing :-). Hello Oshwah. Can you please change my user name to in all language version of Wikipedia? Reason: I think I am violating the privacy rights of the person I use his name. Thanks :) Berk zorlutuna (talk) 18:57, 27 November 2018 (UTC)Berk zorlutuna

Berk zorlutuna -  Done. You have now officially been renamed to Gororotomir712. Let me know if you need anything else and I'll be happy to help. Cheers! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:05, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Being called names

Where should I report this editor, Beyond My Ken, for swearing/name calling? Most of the time I try to report abuse against myself, most administrators, don't do jack. Spshu (talk) 20:32, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Spshu - Let me talk to him directly for you and defuse the situation. In general, it is seen as insulting when an experienced editor is left a template like that on their user talk page. It makes them feel belittled, treated like a newbie or an inexperienced user, and it leads to frustration and sometimes uncivil responses in return. Next time, just message him with a quick message and ask him about a certain edit if you have questions. :-)
Usually when I handle cases and situations like this with an informal message and a simple discussion with the user, it takes care of it and things get resolved quickly and peacefully. That's the goal here; we obviously don't want to run at Beyond My Ken guns blazing, wagging my finger, and scolding at him... because, well, obviously that's not going to help... right? :-) In the meantime, just move on, don't provoke anything further, and I'll see what's going and and make sure all is okay. If you have further questions or concerns, let me know and I'll be happy to help you out. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:43, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
@Oshwah, as a brief bit of background you might want to check the history of Jingle Bells, which this user has been repeatedly disrupting and which caused BMK to snap. Yes, Bad Words Are Bad, but this isn't a case of Spshu coming to you with clean hands. ‑ Iridescent 20:46, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Iridescent - 10-4; thank you for the information. I'll handle this peacefully with both BMK and Spshu and I won't point fingers at anybody. I'm good at defusing situations and I'll make sure both users are taken care of. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:50, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
An BMK trying to set up a 3RR by not giving a edit summary (which most editors would revert out of hand), Iridescent? Then not recognizing this error, he start up with ANB threats in edit summaries and swears in an edit summary because he was caught not using an edit summary to set me up? Excuse me for trying to focus on content. Spshu (talk) 21:10, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Pinging Iridescent for Spshu; I don't think he watchlists my user talk page. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:19, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Spshu, I'm sure you know perfectly well that while edit summaries are a courtesy, they're not and never have been compulsory. Frankly, if you repeatedly vandalised an article I'd been working on and then spammed a template intended for brand-new accounts on my talkpage, I'd probably have been considerably ruder. ‑ Iridescent 21:25, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
{ping|Iridescent}}, Leaving a blank revert is a claim of vandalism, which there isn't as I have indicated a policy-guidlines in my edit summary. ("If you are undoing an edit that is not vandalism, explain the reason in the edit summary. Do not use the default message only.") He in my eyes vandalized the article then claim I was the vandal. He then jump to protection under BRD "Consider reverting only when necessary. BRD does not encourage reverting, but recognizes that reversions happen. When reverting, be specific about your reasons in the edit summary and use links if needed." He was unspecific in both revert edit summary. He wants to be treated as an experienced editor - act like one. I use templates as to get the point across that it is not just my opinion that xyz (in this case having an edit summary) is an issue. Spshu (talk) 22:43, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Pinging Iridescent for Spshu. The template he added above is malformed. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:47, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Sorry Oshwah, I had no intention on making a cmt at BMK's talk until I saw the issue and then I didn't think of stepping on your toes :P - FlightTime (open channel) 21:22, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
FlightTime - No toes were stepped on. ;-) It's not out of line to message another user (especially an experienced long-term editor who knows better) and point out their incivility or other violation of policy and ask them about it. In general, experienced and long-term contributors know and understand that they'll receive push-back when policies are violated, and holding others accountable is the right thing to do for anyone who needs to be. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:28, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Writ Keeper! Yeah... someone came to me on IRC saying that the website was malicious and a script on there was flagging their antivirus. I redacted that revision text pending a look mainly because it was the diff that was given to me; I was looking for the first revision that added it while I took a peek at the site. I checked it out, didn't see anything harmful, and I undid the change and let them know. That was what you saw. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:07, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

I know it's old, but...

...please be careful when using automated tools to revert stuff. In this diff, you reverted with an edit summary of "unexplained content removal". This is not a valid reason given that the IP that removed the content included an edit summary of "Deleted an off-topic (likely self-promotional) section about a specific drift boat manufacturer that had been placed between sections about the two predominant general types of drift boat." I suspect it may have been an accident, but it's good to be sure when you click those Huggle links. I personally know WobblyEsq. I'm not sure why he's suspected of being a sockpuppet, but he's not. That's his only account. Chris Hathcock 18:19, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Chrisauhatch - The user has been blocked due to long-term sock puppetry and abuse of the project. If this is their only account and the block made an error, the user can appeal the block by following the instructions here. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:29, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Chrisauhatch - No problem. WobblyEsq will need to do this themselves and on their own user talk page; other editors cannot do it for them. Make sure that this is communicated so that any appeal goes smoothly and without unnecessary delay in the process. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. Chris Hathcock - Correct. It's essentially the same process as if they were to appeal it on their user talk page... he'll just follow the instructions and send the appeal to the UTRS team for evaluation. He'll generally hear back from someone within a day or so; they're usually pretty good about getting back to people and staying on top of things. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:29, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

You don't need to copy the source like that. This script is a gadget, so you just need to go to Special:Preferences, and in the Editing section of the Gadgets tab, check the box next to the "Enable the legacy (2006) editing toolbar" entry (as well as the refToolbar and extra buttons right below it if you want those) and then hit "Save" at the bottom. Also make sure that the "Enable the editing toolbar" option in the Editing tab is unchecked, since that one will override the legacy toolbar if you select it.

FWIW, it's generally not a good idea to copy the source code of a script like that regardless. Instead, if there's a user script you want to install, you add an entry for it in your common.js page, like so: mw.loader.load("/w/index.php?title=<script location>&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"); So if the script you want to install is located at User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/legacyToolbar.js, then you'd install it by adding the line mw.loader.load("/w/index.php?title=User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/legacyToolbar.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"); to your common.js page, instead of actually copying and pasting the code. Again, you don't need to do that here, since this script is now a Gadget, but just in general. Writ Keeper  04:38, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Oshwah,

I'm a new editor but I don't understand why you removed my personal website and twitter handle from my user page. You cited "Removing per WP:NOTSOCIAL", but the NOTSOCIAL policy contains nothing about whether or not having a personal website or twitter handle is ok or not ok. On the other hand, the guide on user pages states:

"You are also welcome to include a simple link to your personal home page."

This is what I had, alongside my twitter handle. There was no excessive self-promotion and this was not the only thing I had on there (at the moment my user page is short because I'm still building it).

Can you please quote the specific part of the NOTSOCIAL policy which disallows having a personal website and twitter handle listed on the user page?

WaspWatcher (talk) 01:37, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi WaspWatcher, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your thoughts and your questions about my edit to your user page, and I'll be more than happy to explain and discuss it with you. I typically remove these kinds of external links from user pages if the user is very new to Wikipedia, and due to them using their user page like a social networking profile, their personal web page, or an attempt to advertise or promote themselves in conflict of Wikipedia's policies (such as this page for a list of things that we don't allow on user pages). By the spirit of policy, if a brand new user creates a user page with that kind of content and their lack of other contributions show that they've made no significant edits outside of their user page, we'll either remove the external links from the page or delete the page entirely per U5 or G11 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria. In my experience with patrolling new user account and edit logs for this kind of content, I'd say that per every 100 users that create an account, add this kind of content to their user page - that 95 of them stop editing after this and we don't see them make any more edits again. It appears that I messed up in your case; I believed that you were one of those users and I removed those links based on my concern that you might have one of those users. Please accept my apologies and feel free to restore the content I removed. I hope my response helped you to understand why I do this in most situations. You'd be surprised with how much spam, advertising and promotion, or blatantly problematic user pages I have to remove each day. :-) Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns about this, and I'll be happy to discuss it further with you and answer any questions and help you. Again, please accept my apologies for the misjudgment in your particular case. I hope you have a great rest of your day, and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:03, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and explaining your rationale. I can definitely understand how difficult it must be to stay on top of spam so no worries. I'll roll it back and keep editing :-)WaspWatcher (talk) 02:09, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
WaspWatcher - Cool deal; thanks for being understanding. :-) If you're just getting started here, I can't recommend strongly enough that you go through Wikipedia's new user tutorial and complete it. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be significantly helpful to you. Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was very helpful to them and saved them hours if not days of of wasted time and being left feeling frustrated and feeling like you can't succeed here. Most users will make the mistake of jumping right into article creation, spend hours of time building and expanding it, and without taking the time to understand the important policies and guidelines regarding article creation and content inclusion first... don't make that mistake! :-) If you have any questions about Wikipedia or if you need my help or input about anything, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks again for the response and for your understanding. I hope you enjoy your stay here, and that you become a long-term and experienced editor here. We need good editors and contributors, and I hope you decide to stick around ;-). When I started editing here, I didn't think I'd be around for very long..... that was 11 years ago and I obviously never left... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:18, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

FlightTime - Hey, sorry for taking so long to respond to your request for help here. The user might not necessarily have to discuss the change they made unless there's previous consensus on the talk page stating otherwise... However, after you reverted the user's edit asking them to do so, at that point the user needs to do respect those wishes and start a discussion. If they haven't done so, I'd start one and include your concerns regarding the edit, then message the user with a link to the discussion. By doing this, you establish a "paper trail"; subsequent reverts to the article are in spite of your request and would be actionable if not stopped. Let me know how it goes, and do tell me if I need to step in and assist if things go out of control. Good luck ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:00, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
