Ken "Kenny" Lorenzo (7 August 1971-18 October 2017) was a Marshallese photographer that, despite having taken hundreds of photos, never published a single one. He became affiliated with Mathias Voorhees on the 28 December of 1998, and during his career, traveled to most of the countries of the world with him, even going back to Keams Canyon to retire with him. In August of 2017 Lorenzo found through a routine medical check out that he had a colorectal cancer that went untreated for months and died two months later.
Biography
[edit]Early Life
[edit]Lorenzo was born in Ebeye, in the Marshall Islands on the 7th of August 1971 to Utrik Peter, a Marshallese native, and Vincent Lorenzo (1926-1994), a New Zealand tourist who came to live on the island in 1953. His family was relatively poor and so he grew up in a house on the side of the island, and formed relationships with a local street gang, until his father and him moved to Cut Off, Louisiana, although his mother being a native of the island, refused to leave it and likely died on the island. Lorenzo kept most of his childhood secret so it is relatively unknown what happened during his young years, however, it is known that his father died of an unknown illness in 1994.
Beginning as a Photographer
[edit]In 1991 Lorenzo's father offered him a camera for his birthday, which he used to take pictures of ants, so when he died Lorenzo started getting in contact with a local photographer, Andre Wooten, which he ended up having a homosexual relationship with for five years until they broke up in 1997, who taught him most of what he knew about photography. On the 28th of December 1998 he met Mathias Voorhees at the Royal Daiquiris bar near Cut Off and the two talked about their tragic pasts, eventually exchanging their info to keep contact, on the way out of the bar Voorhees called one of his contacts Ivan Kulagin, or "Voronov" (Kulagin had his name legally changed to Voronov, likely a reference to Nikolay Voronov, after he moved to the states, when asked about it he claimed it sounded "cooler") and he drove the two men back, allegedly almost hitting a stop sign on the way back to to Voorhees' house, due to Voorhees hitting the steering wheel.
Friendship with Mathias Voorhees
[edit]During the end of the 1990s Lorenzo and Voorhees became closely affiliated, and Voorhees, having recently earned a significant amount of money in the lottery, suggested they travel the world together, and so they first traveled to Tokyo, Japan where Lorenzo broke his camera, although later Voorhees decided to buy Lorenzo a second camera. They traveled to various places in the world including, but not limited to Kingston, Jamaica, as Lorenzo and Voorhees both had a fond love for islands, the Yukon province of Canada, where Voorhees met his then-lover Vera Koronov, Birgunj, Nepal, during Voorhees' post-marriage trip, Nauru, as Lorenzo had a cousin there, Keams Canyon, Arizona, where Voorhees and Koronov got married, Ushuaia, Argentina then later Stanley, Falkland Islands and lastly Angola. After many years Lorenzo, Voorhees, Koronov had grown sick of traveling and wanted to settle down, so Voorhees convinced Lorenzo to settle down in Keams Canyon, a small Arizona town that they had previously visited, and by May of 2013 they both settled down in Keams Canyon.
Later Life
[edit]During Lorenzo's retirement almost nothing of significant interest happened, apart from the death of his former lover Wooten in 2015, which would lead to him attempting to take his life with pills he had been prescribed, however his suicide attempt failed and he only ended hospitalized for a while. He worked for a small time as a helper to a local farmer, John Noughly, but due to a very-low income, decided to quit in January of 2016, however, during his time working for Noughly Lorenzo was attacked by Noughly's dog, who had gone rabid, before Noughly could kill the animal with a shotgun, leaving a very visible scar on his arm.
Death
[edit]In August of 2017 Lorenzo discovered through a routine medical check at a local clinic/hospital, Keams Canyon Indian Hospital, that he had a colorectal cancer that went untreated for months, according to Voorhees he sough treatment as soon as he learned but couldn't find it in time. On the 18th of October 2017 Lorenzo collapsed at the Keams Canyon Shopping Center and was rushed to the nearest hospital where he died, although it is unknown if he died exclusively of the cancer or if some other illness caused his death. There was no funeral in the United States as Lorenzo had signed a paper citing that his body was to be sent back to his country of origin, the Marshall Islands where his body was put onto a boat and pushed into the ocean.
