Alan B. Alfornon
Alan Baltazar Alfornon (commonly known as PapaLan, PaLan, Bai Alan) was born December 2, a Filipino innovator and entrepreneur who became the first Trisikad owner and operator in City of Naga, Cebu, Philippines. Inspired by his wife, Violeta Oficiar Alfornon, Alan introduced the Trisikad (pedal-powered cab) as a practical and eco-friendly mode of transportation, pioneering a new industry in the town.
Early Life Alan Baltazar Alfornon was born December 02, 1958 and raised in City of Naga, Cebu, (Naga, Cebu) where he developed a strong sense of community and resourcefulness. He later married Violeta Oficiar, whose family had previously lived in Barrio Guadalupe, San Carlos, Negros Occidental. Their partnership would prove instrumental in Alan’s contributions to local transportation.
Introduction of the Trisikad The idea for the Trisikad emerged during a conversation between Alan and Violeta in the late 1980s. Violeta remarked, "Why can’t we make similar transportation like the Pedicab we had in San Carlos, Negros Occidental?"* Inspired by this idea, Alan visualized a modified bicycle with a sidecar that could serve as an affordable and sustainable alternative to motorized vehicles.
Using his ingenuity and limited resources, Alan constructed the first Trisikad in Naga. His design prioritized durability and comfort, enabling the vehicle to meet the needs of passengers and small-scale cargo transport.
When Alan launched the Trisikad on the streets of Naga, it was warmly received by the community this was on 1993. Its affordability, convenience, and accessibility quickly made it a preferred choice for short-distance travel. Alan’s initiative laid the foundation for what would become a staple of daily life in the city.
Legacy Alan’s introduction of the Trisikad sparked widespread adoption of the mode of transport in Naga and beyond. His innovation not only provided a livelihood for many operators but also encouraged environmentally friendly practices by reducing reliance on motorized vehicles.
Today, the Trisikad remains an enduring symbol of Naga’s transportation heritage. Alan’s vision and hard work continue to inspire his community, earning him a lasting legacy as a pioneer and innovator.
Personal Life Alan was a devoted husband to Violeta Oficiar Alfornon and a loving father to their 3 children. His life was characterized by humility, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the lives of those around him.
