Guest Family History, Paternal Trace, Volume I, 24th September, 2024
Volume I, shows using an unbroken chain of genealogical continuity records the Crown relies [4] [5], his descent from his 11th great grandparents, Gyles Guest (-1557) and Alice Guest (-1581), nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England [6]. Alice is the daughter of Cheltenham Baliff, Richard Styles [7] [8].
John Guest's pioneers ancestors who setted in Australia found in Volume I & II
No fewer than sixteen of Guest’s lineal ancestors (paternal and maternal) arrived in Australia as free settlers from 1840. The first to arrive was James Logan (1809-1858) who settled in the Colony of South Australia. More arrived soon after to him, and some preferred to settle in the Port Philip District of the Colony of NSW. The district separated from the Colony of NSW in 1851 to become the Colony of Victoria [9] and then, on the 1st January 1901, the Colony of Victoria became the State of Victoria as part of the Commonwealth of Australia [10] .
Guest's earliest lineal ancestor settlers of Australia are:
James Logan (1809-1858) (Paternal 2nd great grandfather), arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, 17th September 1839 aboard the ship Glenswilly from Scotland [11] [12] , died and buried at Hindmarsh Cemetery Adelaide, South Australia [13] .
James Baldock (1816-1891) (Paternal 2nd great grandfather), arrived Port Adelaide, South Australia, 9th March, 1840 from Frant, Tonbridge Wells, Sussex, England, aboard the ship Orissa [14] [15], and travelling with his widow mother, Sarah Baldock, nee Wallker. Jane arrived in Melbourne, Port Phillip District (Colony of NSW) 4th October 1849, from Calverley, West Yorkshire, England, with her father and siblings, aboard the ship Mohamed Schah [23].
Captain Ambrose William Hallifax (1821-1874) (Maternal 3rd great grandfather), arrived in Port Adelaide, aged 23 years, from Oxford, England on 5th January 1845 aboard the ship William Wise [24] [25]. He was Captain of the above ground mine at Great Kapunda Copper Mine, Burra Burra, Colony of South Australia from 1847-1854 [26]. Ambrose married in Adelaide, Harriet Richards (1828-1863) [27] [28] daughter of captain John Richards of the Great Kapunda's underground Copper Mine Burra, Burra [29]. He arrived in Port Adelaide, Colony of South Australia aboard the ship Barque Medway on the 27th July, 1846 [34]. He travelled to South Australia leaving first Ireland, where he was engaged for some years in service as Mine Captain of the Luganure Mines, Ireland [35]. He and his daughter Harriet, and her siblings, also arrived in Port Adelaide with their father. The Australian settler family Richards, were all born and raised in Tywardreath, Cornwall, England. John worked side by side as joint Captains of the mine from 1848-1849, and after John's demise, Ambrose married his daughter. John and wife Amy Richards, nee Eddy are buried at Kapunda Cemetery. John is remembered by the people of Barosa Council, South Australia where Kapunda is located and he is dedicated with a stone memorial at the Kapunda Wesleyan Church [36].
Amy Richards (1798-1883), nee Eddy (Maternal 4th great grandmother), wife of John Richards (1796-1848) cited above, and mother of Harriet Halifax (1828-1863), nee Richards, cited below, and her siblings, also arrived in Port Adelaide, Colony of South Australia aboard the ship Barque Medway on the 27th July, 1846 [37].

John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) (Paternal great grandfather), arrived in Melbourne, Colony of Victoria in March 1857 aboard the ship James Baines , traveling first from County Tipperary, Ireland through England, visiting Row Heath, Kings Norton, Worcestershire - ancient Guest family seat) and on to Melbourne embarking at Liverpool . John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) was a successful Draper (Clothier) and Grocer (small chain of stores) in Melbourne and followed in the business footsteps of his father, John Guest, Esquire (1789-1864) of Templemore, County Tipperary Ireland. This John Guest, Esq, 1786-1864, was also a successful draper, grocer, juror of the Crown's court in County Tipperary Ireland and Templemore Town Commissioner .
Matilda Guest (1835-1884) nee Connolly (Paternal great grandmother), wife of John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) born Dublin, Ireland, is the daughter of Thomas Connolly (c1810-) of Maynooth, Ireland, near Dublin. despite an age listing discrepancy, Matilda appears to have arrived in Melbourne on 24 July 1857, disembarking from the ship Eagle Speed . Matilda and John married in Melbourne in1858. When John died in 1871, aged only 39 years, Matilda remained in the Guest family home at 34 Leveson Street North Melbourne and operated a successful clothier business from the home.
Guest Family History, Maternal Trace Volume II, 24th December, 2024
Volume II includes more ancient bloodlines enjoyed by John Lindsay Robert Guest (1960-) and his cousins by degree, Dennis Keith Lillee (1949-) AM, MBE [63] [64] [65] [66] [67] and Darren John Halifax (1965-), BA [68] [69] [70]. on the 22nd January 2024, the College of Arms were able to verify their direct descent from their lineal ancestors Hallifax/Waterhouse marked below (Transcript of Coll. Arm Ms 7D14/45):
The verascity of the Hallifax pedigree Ms &D14/45
Consultations withthe College of Arms confirmed that the witness to Guest, Lillee and Halifax's family pedigree Ms &D14/45, shown above, was Ralph Bigland. He was found to be the certain, "Sir Ralph Bigland (1757-1838)" [71]; and he should not to be confused with his maternal uncle of the same name, who also held herald appointment at the College of Arms [72]. In 1831, Bigland rose to the most senior office at the College of Arms, Garter Principal, King of Arms [73].
The two family members declaring the accuracy of the Hallifax family pedigree Ms 7D14/45 wih their declarations witnessed by Sir Ralph Bigland, namely John Hallifax of Springthorpe (1694-), was a clockmaker of Barnsley. He married wife Anna, daughter of Thomas Archdale of Pilay in the County of York [74]; and it is they who are the parents of Sir Thomas Hallifax (1722-1789) MP and former Lord Mayor of London [75] [76].
John's cousin, Robert Hallifax (1735-1810), M.D. of London, was the younger brother of Bishop Samuel Hallifax (1733-), and he Robert, was the other signatory certifying the trustworthiness of family pedigree submitted to the College of Arms which spanned tow centuries of family history, 1586-1788. This signatory, Robert Hallifax (1735-1810) M.D., like his brother Bishop Hallifax were, 1st cousins of Robert Hallifax (1761-1838) M.A. of Magdalen College's Oxford. The other signatory, John Hallifax (1694-) was their elder 1st cousin once removed. Robert Hallifax (1735-1810), M.D. of London, was then, physician to His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, and also to the Royal Household [77] [78] [79].
The trustworthiness of this record Ms 7D14/45 was further some 230 years after Guest, Lillee and Halifax's ancestors submitted in on the 16th December 1788, when recently retired Garter Principal, King of Arms, Sir Thomas Woodcock (1951-) [80], confirmed that the College of Arms Transcript Ms 7D14/45, which passed down to John Guest by his maternal grandfather, Augustus Hallifax Hay (1910-1985), was in fact authentic.
Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared 5th great grandfather, Reverend Robert Hallifax (1761-1838) marked clearly near the bottom of the chart submitted below, was formerly a Demi of Magdalen College, Oxford, and for fifty-three years the Vicar of Standish with Hardwicke, Gloucestershire. He moved to Standish from Berkshire, by invitation by his older 1st cousin (citations needed) [81], Bishop Samuel Hallifax (1733-1793) [82]. Robert was married to Guest, Lillee and Halifax's 5th great grandmother, Sarah Sentence, on the 30th April 1782 [83].
The records restoration project then continued from the very first of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's lineal ancestors entered on the Hallifax pedigree chart, Ms 7D14/45. His name is also clearly identified, Robert Waterhouse (1586-1634), Rector of Springthorpe in the County of Lincoln. Robert was the first in the family to take the name Hallifax. He is John Guest, Dennis Lillee and Darren Hallifax's confirmed 10th great grandfather. The same record, Ms 7D14/45 shows Robert married Margaret Benson, the daughter of Thomas Benson, Guest, Lillee and Halifax's 11th great grandmother.
Unravalled by Guest (2022, 2023 and 2024) was the identity of Robert's parents, namely Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP (citations needed) and his wife, Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607), nee Waterton (citations needed). They held the manor of Shibden Hall, Halifax, West Yorkshire (citations needed).
Robert's father, Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP, and Lord of the Manor, Shibden Hall, is confirmed to be descended from Sir Gilbert Waterhouse, or "Ab Aquae, Domo, Knt" and his wife Isabella Waterhouse, daughter of Sir Richard de Longvale, the co-heir, of her brother, Sir John de Longvale, Knt [84] [85] [86]. It is Gilbert and Isabella who now recognised are the earliest patrilineal ancestors enjoyed by Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP of Shibden Hall [87] supported by authentic genealogical records the Crown relies [4] [5].
The longest of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's verifiable bloodlines presented in Volume II
Waterhouse
Amongst the deepest amongst all of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared ancient bloodlines flowing into the Hallifax pedigree chart Ms 7D14/45 verified by the College of Arms and flowing first to their 10th great grandfather, Robert Waterhouse (1586-1634), Rector of Springthorpe, first to take the name Hallifax, is the Waterton bloodline. Robert inherited it from his mother Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607) daughter of Thomas Waterton (1525-1575) and Beatrice (Beatrix) Restwold.
Waterton
Jane Waterhouse's (c1550-aft 1607), patrilineal, "Waterton" bloodline, is well settled in history and confirmed by multiple credible sources (Burke 1838; Walker 1931), and recently further verified by the College of Arms on the 22nd January 2024 [88].
Jane is a direct descendent of Norman d'Areci, who accompanied William the Conqueror. His son acquired land in Normandy, England and he, Norman d'Areci took the name Normand de Normandy. His son, Reiner de Normandy, brother of Ralph de Normandy was the first to take the name Waterton. They are all stepped out by Burke (1838) and J.W. Walker (1931) to be Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607) patrilineal ancestors and included also in their evidence based research ar Jane's other patrilineal lineal ancestors standing between her and Reiner de Waterton.
One of them, Sir Thomas Waterton, married Muriel Leke (Leek) daughter of John Leek and XXXX. From Murile Waterton, nee Leek flows the blodd of Edward I and Eleanor Castille, making through Jane, Guest, Lillee and Halifax direct desendents of Edward I and Eleanor Castille.
The union of Catherine de Burgh and Thomas Waterton is a further ancestral gateway unlocking genealogical continuity enjoyed by Guest, Lillee and Halifax to other monarchs of England, Scotland, Ireland and France [89]. All stepped out comprehensively, and with cicumspect by Guest, and subseuentlly along with all other bloodlines Guest shares with Lillee and Halifax, verified by examiners assisting the Crown on the matter of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared bloodline, on 22nd January 2024.
Petition for Succession, Hallifax Family History, Earldom of Oxford, 1st Creation, December 1066, 15th February, 2023
In 2023, a "Petition for Succession, Hallifax Family History, Earldom of Oxford, 1st Creation, December 1066, 15th February, 2023". was presnted to King Charles III. The Petition takes the form of a book, and resulted in the petitioners having their dynastic bloodlines verified by the Crown, by the examiner, who was the advisor to His Majesty, King Charles III [90].
Verification was received by the petitioners twelve months after they made thier submission. The time period attests to the verasity of the Crown's review of peerage law and the bloodlines inherited by Guest, Lillee and Halifax which formed much of the content in the 2023 Petition. The College of Arms considered the work to be "remarkable research" [91].
Sufficiently so, Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared dynastic bloodlines, researched and authored by Guest, were left uncontested by the examiner advising the Crown [92].
All bloodlines, and their companion genealogical evidence records for lineal family along each line are shown in Volume II.
Volume II differs from the 2023 Petition, only in the sense that Guest's matrilineal ancestors flowing from his mother, through her paternal line Hay/Simmie are included only in Volume II. Guest's mother is the grand daughter of Violet Ethel Hay (1882-1955), nee Hallifax.
Also included in Volume II and not listed in the 2023 Petition, are John Guest's, mother's maternal lines, McArdle, Orsino and Mirabella.
Appreciated by the Crown's examiners, was Guest's consistency in ensuring every lineal member claimed across the Guest family history restoration project, including in particular, the 2023 Petition, was his application of sage advice he received from Sir Thomas Woodcock and Mr Grant Bavister, College of Arms, and followed, to gather the right type of genealogical evidence for each family member claimed. He gathered the type of evidence peerage law experts the Crown considers necessary for proving one's bloodline for a peerage claim experts Palmer (1907) and Gadd (1985) step out instructionally.
The Crown's, examiner and advisor who considered the bloodlines within the 2023 Petition to constitute "remarkable research", had long suspected suspected some of Britain's oldest bloodlines with dynastic roots, flowed to the Hallifax family members listed in MS 7D 14/45.
The examiner verified Guest, Lilllee and Halifax's line of descent beyond Ms 7D14/45 from Queen Margaret (1045-1093) and King Malcolm III (1031-1093) of Scotland, as well as other dynastics on the 22nd January 2024 from the comprehensive set of mixed male and female lines Guest was able to evidence.
Standing invitation by the Crown for Guest and his Co-petitioners, Lillee and Halifax, to make a "Supplemental Petition"
Received by "J. L.R Guest, Esq.", "D.J. Halifax, Esq.", and "D.K.Lillee, Esq.", on the 1st February, 2024, was a letter sent by email from the Crown's examiner and advisor on all matters considered with the 2023 Petition, inviting "Mr Guest" to submit a "Supplemental Petition". This subsequent matter was not canvassed in the first letter sent to Guest, Lillee and Halifax on the 22nd January 2024, in which verification of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's descent from Queen Margaret (1045-1093) and King Malcolm III (1031-1093) of Scotland, was confirmed, amongst discussion of other matters contained within:
Succession to the Earldom of Oxford
"Looking into the future (rather than back nearly 1000 years), these are my preliminary thoughts:
If it were to be thought that you have been able to uncover sufficient further corroborative evidence in support of the actual creation of the Earldom in December 1066, then in such a case, where you [J. L. R Guest, Esq.; D.J. Halifax, Esq.; and/or D.K.Lillee, Esq.] were not at that time pursuing a “succession claim” to prove succession, I think that would amount to you seeking simply, in effect, a declaration from the Crown that it acknowledges the creation of the Earldom in 1066; such is not, in my opinion a “claim” and my feeling is that it could proceed through the necessary channels by Petition, without it being necessary to incorporate all the genealogical evidence in support of the claim into a Statutory Declaration, as would be the case if you were actually formally pursuing a succession claim. Therefore, if you decide to take this discrete issue further, I am, at present of the opinion that such additional statements as you may wish to make or evidence you wish to introduce should be in the form of a Supplemental Petition – basically the same format as your original Petition of last year but incorporating a statement that it is supplemental to that one ... (page 1/2).
... I hope this is helpful. I shall place a copy of this letter on the Crown Office file ... (page 2/2)
Supplemental Petition for Declaring Edgar the Atheling was Created Earl by William I, 24th September 2024
During the period from the 1st February 2024 to 11th September 2024, Guest uncovered sufficient further corroborative evidence in support of the actual creation of the Earldom in December 1066.
Prudence dictated John Guest should consult notable scholars, academics and historians, to whom Guest (2004) consulted the following experts:
- Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Tom’s publications include: 2011, Hermits and Recluses in English society, 950-1200; 2014, Herman the Archdeacon and Goscelin of Saint-Bertin: Miracles of St Edmund, ed; 2014, Bury St Edmonds and the Norman Conquest, edited; 2015, What the Victorians Threw Away, Oxbow book). Professor Tom Licence recently in 2020 published “Edward the Confessor: Last of the Royal Blood”. He further gave his expert opinion on the veracity of the evidence submitted within this supplemental petition, and concluded Edgar the Ætheling was created an Earl by William I.
- Dr Rosamond McKitterick, PhD, renowned English medieval historian (pre-conquest/Europe). Dr McKitterick took the time to connect the Guest to Professor David Bates. She further advised of journal articles, and obscure PhD publications that the Petitioner found valuable in explaining Edgar the Ætheling’s (1052-1120) nobility and administrative position in William I’s royal administration, during the years 1066-1068.
- Dr Mathew Champion (PhD) Senior Lecturer, Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. Dr Champion stepped in as a local facilitator, in Australia, to assist Guest in making contact with the England based experts above.
- Dr Kathleen Neal (PhD), Senior Lecturer, School of Philosophical Historical and International Studies at Monash University. Dr Neal facilitated further contact with Dr Mathew Firth, PhD, in Adelaide South Australia.
- Dr Matthew Firth (PhD), Lecturer in Medieval Literature and History, at Flinders University in Adelaide. Dr Firth also kindly provided a response to Guest's questions in regards to the meaning of Williams & Martin (2002, p1432; 1992, p156 & 1986, p156) Domesday definitions and some discussion about Edgar Ætheling’s position under King William I during the years 1066-1068.
- Dr David Bates (PhD) Professor at Emeritus College, University of East Anglia, School of History - A historian of Britain and France during the period from the 10th to 13th centuries. Dr Bates has written many books and articles during his career, and emailed his suggestions, via Dr Rosamond McKitterick, where, perhaps, the Petitioner may find more about Edgar the Ætheling’s position under William I for the period 1067-1068, amongst obscure PhD dissertations.
- Dr Marc Morris (PhD), independent consultant, self-employed for providing the names of other better placed authorities to assist John L.R. Guest. Marc is an author, historian, and also a television presenter of English history (Castle, Channel 4).
Letter of expert opinion
After Guest followed up on research leads provided by those listed above, Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge agreed to review the draft Supplementary Petition, and give his expert opinion on whether the petitioners' had made their evidence-based case [93]. Given the strength of the evidence before him, Professor Licence. He found:
"In conclusion I find in favour of the petitioners statement, that on the balance of probabilities, Edgar the Atheling, was created Earl by William I ..." [94] [95] [96] [97].
This expert opinon from Professor Licence, led to petitioners, Guest, Lillee and Halifax, submitting the "Supplementary Petition" to the Head of the Crown Office, Deputy Clerk of the Crown Chancery, Registrar of the Peerage [98].
The matter of declaring the creation of the peerage title, Earldom of Oxford 1066 is presently under consideration.
