Southcott (or Southcote) is a hamlet in the civil parish of Okehampton Hamlets, in Devon, England. The hamlet name is Anglo Saxon in origin and means 'southern cottage'.
The hamlet, little more than one road of cottages, is located to the west of the town of Okehampton and north of Dartmoor National Park.
Southcott Cross
[edit]Southcott Cross is a unique Dartmoor cross. The cross is 6'3" tall and is octagonal in shape. The Stone cross is unique as it depicts two humans, one on each side. At the front is a Crucifix and the reverse is believed to be the Virgin Mary praying, as the figure's hand are depicted together. [1]
It is believed that the cross was put there in the c13th Century as a waymaker cross to the Cistercian monks of the nearby Brightley Priory, on the bank of the West Okement River. [2]

The University of Bristol Society of Change Ringers (UBSCR) is a change ringing society.[9] UBSCR is associated with the University of Bristol and is affiliated to Bristol SU. UBSCR was established in 1943[10] and has rung bells at St Michael on the Mount Without since 1944.[10] Since 1950 there have been over 700 peals rung for the society.[11] UBSCR is also affiliated to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers[12] and sends two representatives to its AGM.
History
[edit]UBSCR was founded in the Autumn Term of 1943 by Monica Richardson. Since then generations of student ringers have come and gone, contributing on the way to the development of the Society and its traditions.
The Society's first practice was held on 6 November 1943 at Long Ashton. In 1944 UBSCR moved to St Michael on the Mount, Without. The Society’s first peal (5040 of Grandsire Triples) was rung on 17 May 1947. Since then UBSCR has grown. Students and former students from the Bristol area are active members.
The society home tower was St Michael on the mount, without from 1944 until 2012 when safety concerns limited the amount of ringing at St Michaels. The home tower is now St Matthews, Kingsdown. Ringing continued, albeit sporadically, at St Michaels until October 2016 when the church suffered a major fire.[13] [14]
Activities
[edit]UBSCR holds and participates in many events throughout the course of each academic year, including the meetings of the Southern Universities Association and the Northern Universities Association, a Summer Tour, Cupid Tour (organised by the current master) and a Christmas Party, as well as a cheese and port evening and pudding party. The Annual Dinner is held on the 4th Saturday of January each year and is celebrated with the ringing of peals.
The University Centenary
[edit]In 2009 the University of Bristol celebrated the centenary of being granted its Royal Charter.[15] In celebration, Great George was rung for two minutes, and the bells of Bristol 'followed' Great George by ringing quarter peals and general change ringing. The UBSCR played a part in the celebrations[16] of this event by ringing Great George and by helping with the other ringing.[17]

The Southcott Manor House was the seat of the Southcott family for over eight centuries, it is believed that they have been owners of that estate for much longer. The Southcott Family was a great Celtic sheep farming family.[1]
Fire
[edit]In the year 1822 the house caught fire, destroying the Manor House. The Southcott family then homeless, sold the estate and the burnt out house. This ended the Southcott's long attachment to the estate.[2]
Modern Day
[edit]The farmhouse was restored not long after in 19th Century, not long after the fire, it remains as a farm. But it is primarily operated as a horse riding centre, occasionally hosting horsing events.[3]
The ancient outhouses and farm buildings still remain in operation, depicting its Medieval building technique. Not being connected to the original Manor House they were saved from the fire.
