Kisubi seminary is a Roman catholic minor seminary located in Wakiso district in the central region of Uganda. It was established in 1951 and it serves the diocese of Kampala[1].The main aim of the seminary is to nurture vocations to the priesthood. However, the majority of the boys(in the seminary) do not make it to the priesthood.They however gain abundantly from the richness of the academic,spiritual,moral and human formation at the seminary[2].The mission is to nurture and develop vocations of young people by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for them to function productively as catholic priests.The administration of the seminary is composed of 16 residential priests,headed by rector Reverend Father Francis Sengendo,Vice rector Father Wenceslaus Kkonde and the spiritual Director Reverend Father Charles Ssuna[3].
Curriculum
[edit]Kisubi seminary supports and facilitates students in discovering their potential in being independent yet dependable. It is a forming ground for spiritual,academic and social sectors. It follows the Uganda national curriculum which is designed by the National curriculum development center(NCDC).The curriculum leads to sitting for the Uganda national examinations board(UNEB) and award of Uganda certificate of education(O-Level) and Uganda advanced certificate of education(A-Level).It offers Arts and Sciences subjects.There is the ordinary level of four years and the advanced level two years.At the end of the six years the students continue with their studies in the major seminary or join other universities and colleges.On several occasions,Kisubi seminary candidates have been among the best ten students in their performances nation wide.Sports: Seminarians at Kisubi Seminary have a number of games to promote physical growth. The games are: football, volleyball, basketball, badminton and lawn tennis and Clubs such as debating, writers’, typing, Scouting Club, Wildlife Club, Red Cross Club, ICT club and Youth Alive Club, French, drama and Music. Religious movements are: Young Christian Society (Y.C.S), Legion of Mary, Apostleship of prayer, Miraculous Medal and Uganda Martyrs.
Apart from providing a high quality of education,the seminary is committed to enriching the lives of young people by giving them an opportunity to learn things of value aimed at improving their living conditions and quality of live[4].The seminary is known to produce men that are changing the world as priests and all around students in terms of academics, co and extra activities.Various students have been admitted into international universities on scholarships for medicine,engineering,law and many others.It also known for participating in music competitions at inter diocesan level and it has emerged champions on several occasions.
Location
[edit]The seminary is located in Wakiso district,Busiro county 1 mile off Entebbe-Kampala highway(15 miles from Kampala) by road south of Kampala Uganda's capital and largest city[5] along Nabinonya road.The school is situated in Kisubi on Kibale hill,surrounded by a beautiful greenery of a natural forest,and to the eastern side its boundary touches the shore line of Lake Victoria[6]. The coordinates of the seminary are 0.1120° N, 32.5433° E[7] (Latitude 0°6'48.41"N;Longitude 32°32'40.92"E)
History
[edit]Kisubi seminary was found by the Religious order of the missionaries of Africa[8] and was named after its patroness Saint Charles Lwanga who was part of the Uganda martyrs and Christ the King.Today it is under the catholic Archdiocese of Kampala.It started in 1952 where a number of missionaries of Africa taught.The minor seminary which had been started at Lubaga in 1895,was later transferred to Kisubi where it remained up to December 1903 when it was transferred to Bukalasa(Masaka)[9].The construction of the new seminary started in 1949 during the episcopate of Mgr.Joseph Cabana.(Missionary of Africa)[10].Now the Archbishop of Kampala is the supreme head of the seminary and he is the one responsible for its staffing and general welfare and drawing the regulations that govern it.
Alumni
[edit]The Old Boys of this seminary have always played an important role in the welfare and general growth of Kisubi seminary with generous donations and words of counsel, along with the school administration, the Kisubi seminary old boys Association(KISOBA) have been involved in the running of the school in one way or another right from its foundation in the past several years.The Old Boys help in the implementing and supporting activities and projects related to educational,sports and extra co-curricular development activities of the seminary.
