Shobha Lal (born 8 September 1951) is an Indian social worker and founder of ASMII, a non-governmental organization focused on women's empowerment in rural India. Her initiatives in education, vocational training, and health awareness have impacted over 100,000 women across more than 400 villages in Haryana.

Early life and education

Shobha Lal was born in Gwalior, India. She completed multiple degrees, including:

  • Master's degree in Sociology (1994)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Adult and Extension Education (1990)
  • Bachelor of Science in Library Science (1989)
  • Master's degree in Hindi (1972)

She was the first woman in her extended family to obtain a postgraduate education.

Career

Early work

In 1974, Lal joined the All India Women's Conference in Kanpur, where she worked on adult education programs.

ASMII foundation

In 2005, Lal established ASMII, a non-profit organization focusing on women's empowerment through vocational training and self-help groups. The organization operates primarily in rural Haryana.

Programs and initiatives

Vocational training

ASMII has provided vocational training to over 9,000 women since 2005. Training programs include:

  • Beauty and wellness
  • Bag stitching
  • Entrepreneurship development

These initiatives have reportedly increased participating families' annual income by up to ₹50,000. Lal also organized the SARAS Mela in Gurugram, which featured 300 artisans from 18 states.

Educational initiatives

Lal's educational programs include:

  • Vocational training centers
  • Gender sensitization programs
  • Teacher capacity-building programs

In collaboration with government agencies, these programs have:

  • Facilitated the return of over 2,000 girls to school in Mewat
  • Provided education and empowerment training to 3,800 girls through government school teacher training programs

Under Lal's leadership, ASMII has organized:

  • 180 health camps serving 13,500 women
  • Breast cancer awareness programs
  • Bone density screening camps
  • Free medical support services

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ASMII:

  • Distributed 10,000 masks produced by program participants
  • Provided ration kits to 500 families

Lal has received several awards for her social work:

In 2017, she was invited to participate in the CSW60 session on Women's Empowerment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In 2022, her work was featured in the Outlook magazine[1].
