Returning to Canada, she re-joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Canada, where she wrote policy, attended international and UN-IMF-World Bank conferences[6] and managed international development projects all around the world for the major part of her government career. She began to publish children’s books in 1982. Over the decades in government, there followed some 91 books, including translations into French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Swedish, and Turkish. Her saga Sentinel of the Damned (finalist for the Book Excellence Awards) and her novel I Bow to Thee My Country were her longest works, as discussed in a radio interview with CKCU [7] in the Capital of Canada. Her book Letters to Kathy – A Series of Notes and Love Letters by James Traill Lyon, was runner-up for the Fred Kerner Prize 2016 of the Canadian Authors Association [8]. Lyon-Villiger’s special talent is the way she makes the landscape part of the stories, according to Edie B, CKCU host of the show “Literary Landscape” in an interview on Thursday January 24th, 2019. Life [edit source] Katharina Cäcilia Lyon-Villiger, who was called "Käti" for short, was born on Friday, November 22, 1946, in her ancestral hamlet of Egg, Alikon b. Sins in the Freiamt region of the Canton of Aargau in Nothern Switzerland, some forty kilometers from the original castle of the Habsburg Dynasty [9] and Horben Castle [10], which is featured in her major works. She grew up very happily in her ancestral home on Mount Lindenberg, built in the 17th century. She lived there, with her six siblings, until she moved to Canada soon after graduation from College, at the age of nineteen, to begin a banking career and to pursue her academic studies. She is well known in the Outaouais-Quebec region for having taken fourteen years to re-build a dilapidated old folly of a replica of Neuschwanstein in Perkins, Quebec, and turning it into the ill-fated Horben Castle Canada [11] . Lyon-Villiger attended Alikon [12] Primary School and High School at Bezirksschule Sins [13], followed by a finishing year at a Girls’ School, Le pensionnat St-Louis in Orange, Department of Vaucluse, in the South of France. After graduating from College back in Switzerland, she left for Canada, at the behest of a Canadian girlfriend, to further her professional qualifications and academic studies, including a short stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She met her first husband, James Traill Lyon, QC, shortly thereafter while riding and training for a concours hippique in Montreal, and they were married in Switzerland in 1971. She married her second husband, barrister and author Peter Sorokan, QC, in 1986. They live in a uniquely traditional home in the Capital of Canada, Ottawa, and she enjoys writing there and in their Victorian lakeside cottage on Chauncey Lake, Quebec.

Career as an author [edit source] Lyon-Villiger began writing when her grandmother gave her a gold-cut, leather-bound diary at Christmas 1958, when she was twelve. She wrote into it almost daily for many years into adulthood. She composed her first poem in Switzerland as a schoolchild and wrote her first series of poems in High School, notably a lament upon having to leave her home, her riding horse, Fanny, her barsoi, Cyrus, and her walks and rides in the woods of her beloved Freiamt County. She submitted her first short story, "Le grand ballet," for publication in Montreal when she was not yet twenty years old. Lyon-Villiger contributed articles to all her school newspapers on a regular basis. She published her first series of fairytales for children, Wonderland Stories, in 1982, and her first novel, Sentinel of the Damned, in 2000, which she co-translated into German, French, and Spanish. Recognition [edit source] The Canadian Authors Association (National Capital Region chapter) recognized Kati Lyon-Villiger in 2024: The Rahel Poems is a diverse assortment and mixture of poems, ranging from the horrors of wars to the glory of love, and from the whimsical to the poignant [14] Femmes remarquables Ottawa Distinguished Women installed Lyon-Villiger as one of its « Women of Inspiration » [15].
