Joan Sevier is a nom de plume of Catherine McKinney, a young woman with a wide range of interests. Chief among these interests are religion, theology, and philosophy, but her thoughts extend far beyond these things.
Joan was born right before they stopped making nineties babies, and is incredibly annoying about this fact. She was born in a log cabin in the Appalachian Mountains, except instead of a cabin, it was a hospital, and instead of being made out of logs, it was made out of a wide variety of materials, including metal. The doctor assigned her male at birth, a decision which many[who?] have come to regard as a total misplay. The medical establishment did, however, redeem itself when three years later a doctor correctly diagnosed her with Asperger Syndrome, now called Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Education and Career
[edit]
Joan received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from the College of William & Mary, a school better known for such alumni as Thomas Jefferson, Todd Howard, and Will Toledo. At a loss for what one could possibly do with a liberal arts degree in Religion, she went on to receive her Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. With this education, she has embarked on a tense career of answering "so you're going to become a minister? They let you people do that?" repeatedly from well-meaning family, friends, and first dates.
As a teenager, Joan became a Christian, though she grew up in a non-religious household. Shortly afterwards, she joined the Episcopal Church, and has been an Episcopalian ever since. She is frequently involved in religious education and formation for children and teenagers.
Joan is a transgender woman. She has described her sexuality variously as asexual, demisexual, lesbian, and "technically bisexual."
As a transgender woman and a Christian with an academic background, Joan does a lot of thinking about gender studies, theology, and philosophy. She is particularly interested in trans feminism, and in the development of a trans feminist Christian theology. She does much more thinking about these things than writing, however, and as a result has published very little. She is particularly influenced by the ideas of Julia Serano, Gilles Deleuze, C. S. Peirce, Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, and Nicholas of Cusa.
