Vocabulary Teaching and Learning Strategies
[edit]Vocabulary is one of the most essential competencies needed to teach and learn a new language. It is the basis for all other skills to be developed: reading understanding, listening comprehension, speaking, writing, spelling and pronunciation.Vocabulary is key to English language teaching because students cannot understand others or communicate their own ideas without adequate vocabulary. Vocabulary is a significant area of concern for teachers, because children who know several terms are more likely to be professional readers than those with fewer words. Students usually find it hard to speak English fluently. The challenges faced by many students when they encounter text at a grade level are partly due to increased word complexity.Students who want to learn a new language — may lack the vocabulary strategies required to become skilled in the target language. Most teachers do not have enough techniques while teaching vocabulary effectively. Therefore, researching on the issues arising during learning vocabulary will therefore help both students and teachers. Teachers can always gain insight into their teaching strategies by asking students how they prefer to learn vocabulary in a language. Consequently, language teachers need to recognize the importance of vocabulary teaching, regardless of the language being taught.Research into vocabulary learning and teaching has only recently been of primary interest to researchers. As the researchers concluded, the evidence available shows that school curriculum spends only a limited amount of time teaching vocabulary and little has been done to change this educational area. The creation of vocabulary is an intricate process, and have multiple meanings in the sentence and paragraphs of the texts. This research is important because it looks at the values and methods used by language learners to acquire academic vocabulary.
Learning Strategies
[edit]There should be different strategies to learn vocabulary effectively and efficiently within and outside of Class. The students will be given various learning strategies through which they can choose which strategies will help them to learn vocabulary outside the class such as Rote memorization, mnemonic memory strategy, Listen to audio recordings etc. There should be on emphasis on teaching strategies, which students wants their instructor to focus on such as Pronunciations, Spelling, Prefixes, suffixes, and roots, Good example in sentences etc. and How do they like their instructor to present vocabulary whether Visually, Aurally (spoken), Kinetically (body movement, gestures, acting out meaning, etc.), Using visual aids (videos, pictures, diagrams, real objects, etc.) , Using aural aids etc. This will help both teachers and students for vocabulary acquisition not only learning the English language but also learning second language. This will also cater to differential learning within and outside the classroom. The results of this will help the language teachers enhance their language courses and will also augment their skills and efficiency. In general, teachers and students could use many useful and efficient vocabulary learning strategies more frequently. To promote vocabulary learning it is important to give students a broader range of available learning strategies.
