From 1184 to 1191 Cyprus was ruled by Isaak Comnenus, the former Byzantine governor of Cyprus and pretender to the Byzantine throne, until he was overthrown and captured by Richard I of England while he was on his way towards the Holy Land to fight the Third Crusade.
Nomenclature
[edit]It is commonly and incorrectly stated that Isaak Comeneus declared himself the emperor of Cyprus when in reality he had declared himself the Emperor of the Orient.[1]
Comnenus Rule
[edit]Arrival of Richard I
[edit]After seven years of his rule it was said that "the island groaned beneath this scourge of fate, and he reduced the Cypriots to suck a state of dispair that all were ready to welcome anything which afforded a means of escape from such tyranny."[2]
