Costs and Research Spending on IBS

[edit]

The aggregate cost of irritable bowel syndrome in the United States has been estimated at $1.7-$10 billion in direct medical costs, with an additional $20 billion in indirect costs, for a total of $21.7-$30 billion. [1] A study by a managed care company comparing medical costs of IBS patients to non-IBS controls identified a 49% annual increase in medical costs associated with a diagnosis of IBS.[2] A 2007 study from a managed care oganization found that IBS patients incurred average annual direct costs of $5,049 and $406 in out-of-pocket expenses. [3]

The National Institutes of Health publishes a list of all external grants awarded to researchers on its Intramural Grant Award Page. For all medical research, in recent years the NIH had awarded approximately 47,000 awards totaling $20 billion. Figures 1 and 2 shows the grant awards for 2005 and 2006 containing the words IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the title. The NIH's 2005 report contains 12 such grant awards, totaling $3,165,645. The NIH's 2006 report contains 13 such grant awards totaling US $3,326,444.
