Ceremosnja Cave

Ceremosnja cave (Serbian Cyrillic: Церемошња, pronounced [tzeremoSŋɑː]) , also known as Jovanova cave is located in Homolje Mountains, in eastern Serbia. First discovered in 1952, and this was the second cave to open as a show cave to public.[1] So far 775,5 m of it have been investigated and 431 m are adapted and available for touristic visits. It has been listed in the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia since 2007. Because of the number of speleothems it is considered as one of the most beautiful caves of Serbia. [2]

Morphological Characteristics

[edit]

The natural division of the cave is into 5 areas which have their specific names according to their characteristics:

Entrance canal

[edit]

The Entrance canal is 87 m long and it stretches out from the entrance to the Arena Hall. Unlike the other areas it is quite poor in speleothem.

Arena Hall

[edit]

Arena Hall is the largest, most attractive hall in the cave, and is somewhat larger than the other areas- 105 m. It can be reached only through the entrance canal. It is of an irregular, round shape and resembles an old Roman amphitheater, hence the name Arena. The width of the Arena spans from 40 to 50 m, and the height from 20 to 24 m. The ornaments in this area are of outstanding quality. The names are very descriptive:

  • "On the eternal watch", represents soldiers on watch and is also the emblem of the cave.
  • "The waterfall", a massive calcite column which is 10m high.
  • "Beautiful Vlah woman" a fluttery white column formed from crystallized white calcite.
  • "The Groom" and "Friends"

Abyss Hall

[edit]

It can be entered through an opening in the wall from the Arena. The opening is called "Dveri" (doors) since it resembles the doors behind an altar. it is 36 m long and 18 m high.

Andesite Hall

[edit]

The Andesite Hall can be reached from the Arena through a wide hall and got its name after andesite which covers the floor of the Hall.
